3:00 PM
@enderland Oh, I understand....

My biggest concern is that if I work with the graduate college, they will try to "fix" my relationship with my adviser
and he's really, really good at saying nice/believable things and not following through at all

user41796
They are obligated to at least offer that as an option

@enderland Just be open, honest and not whiny
phrase it as questions
"I am struggling with X problem. I have tried Y and Z. What should I do?"

Maybe I will call them now...
heh

user41796
And if they insist on "fixing the relationship", then find a way to put some leverage in on your side.

3:02 PM
yeah. my concern with that is I'll do my defense, my adviser will be a PITA and ask questions I don't know, and go "SEE I told you he wasn't ready to defend"

user41796
"Adviser takes many months to respond. I need a response sooner. I don't believe he'll change his patterns. If the pattern of non-response continues, I want to know that I have other options. What could those options be?"

@GlenH7 /me Top 6 CV review queue!

user41796
@enderland Oh, that's guaranteed. The unspoken rule is that you don't defend until your adviser says you're ready to defend and your adviser is willing to strong-arm the rest of the committee with your defense.

user41796
@durron597 props! I've been slacking off again lately

Fifth will take much longer, Dan is still reviewing daily
though not to 20 most days.
(I can't count)

3:04 PM
@GlenH7 yeah, right, and in my case it's not going to happen almost assuredly
@durron597 I like this approach of asking lots of questions

questions++, emotions--
unambiguous facts, like "my advisor took three months to respond to my last email"
not "my advisor takes three months to respond to everything"

"my adviser takes an average of almost 4 months to respond to everything" :P

user41796
@enderland - The directors will easily read through all of that by you simply asking objective questions. You're not the first to have had this issue. What they need is a pliable candidate who can work with them so that it's not as hard to resolve the issue.

user41796
@enderland Have you tried calling and leaving voicemails?

@GlenH7 no, I want everything traceable and in email at this point

user41796
3:08 PM
@enderland Use your cell phone to call, pull the call logs from your phone bill

@GlenH7 no I mean, I want anything he might say to be documented

user41796
And / or use a voip app that allows you to record the calls.

@GlenH7 that's not... a bad idea

user41796
A quick search indicates that your state allows single party consent to recording of calls. Granted, that's generally only a concern with court cases, but good to know you'd be on the right side of the law.

I guess I should wait until at least tomorrow to call, I had sent my "can I do this? what are your thoughts?" email sunday night and I'd like to give at least 2 business days

user41796
3:12 PM
Giving a reasonable degree of time is a good idea. Might not hurt to generate a "contact log" where you record all contacts made, the purpose, and any outcomes.

@GlenH7 yeah. I already have a google doc tracking how long every response time has been (mine and the universities)
hey neat I'm glad I can record phone convos without breaking the law, I might be able to get even more evidence against him this way

user41796
Yep, behold the power of voip

or just android
lol
actually looks like that's nontrivial to do

user41796
really? That's a bit surprising

well I guess android only lets you easily record your side of the convo, but there are apps that let you record both sides

yeah, I guess I'll see what happens...

user41796
And even if you're only recording your side of the conversation, it's pretty easy repeat back to them what they said. "What I heard is that you think I need to ..."

@GlenH7 yeah, true

user41796
"So you just said that I'm an insufferable twit and you rue the day you ever agreed to take me on as a student. How do you think I should react to that, or what exactly do you expect me to do?"

its so annoying needing just a simple "sounds good" and then I can be done with him completely

3:53 PM
Hey @enderland!

hmmm, my university has an anoynmous office for issues like this...
@RubberDuck hey there

How the heck are ya?

@RubberDuck in general? or today :P

Both? Lol
I didn't realize you spent time in here.

today I'm dealing with all sorts of issues related to crap from my thesis proocess
in general? enjoying life a fair bit :)

user41796
3:56 PM
@enderland Which will have an even slower response time than what you're currently dealing with

Good to hear mate. The latter part at least.

@GlenH7 well I am going to talk with them this afternoon - they are a 100% advisory group, they don't take any action officially (more like an anoymous resource)

At work, we're using Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client v 3.1.x. I need to uninstall and reinstall at home to connect to work. Should I download the v3.1 version or the v4.x one? According to Cisco, 3.1.x and better work with Windows 10.

user41796
The only reason they have that office is because someone somewhere thought it would be a good idea or the law required them to do so. Or some project / initiative / blah blah blah said to do it.

@GlenH7 yeah absolutely the formal process would be complicated, but ideally the informal office has seen a lot of this... crap before and knows the right policies/ways forward/etc

user41796
3:58 PM
That part could certainly be helpful

An ombudsman or public advocate is usually appointed by the government or by parliament, but with a significant degree of independence, who is charged with representing the interests of the public by investigating and addressing complaints of maladministration or a violation of rights. In some countries an Inspector General, Citizen Advocate or other official may have duties similar to those of a national ombudsman, and may also be appointed by a legislature. Below the national level an ombudsman may be appointed by a state, local or municipal government. Unofficial ombudsmen may be appointed by...
I guess my university has a very clear line of "we don't do anything but give feedback/suggestions"
@durron597 thanks for linking those Academia questions, I was doing further searching and found that term and then some google connected me :)

user41796
@durron597 Props on your gold java badge!

user55340
4:17 PM
@RubberDuck he's a regular here - chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/21/the-whiteboard (look at frequently in the room)

user55340
The number in the lower right of the user card is how many chat messages have been said here.

@GlenH7 Thanks! I got Marshal today too... about 200 helpful flags in the last 48 hours loool
There is so much flaggable crap on SO if you dedicate a few minutes to SEDE.

user41796
I'd believe that.

user41796
I need to get my life back in order so I can start answering questions again...

I challenged @gnat to a race to 20k (me on SO, him on progs), I don't think he cares or is interested but at least I want to be tied for rep ;)

user41796
4:26 PM
It would be nice to have gnat at 20k. We could use another insta-delete voter.

@MichaelT I can't decide if it's a good thing that it's that low or a bad thing that it's that high

@GlenH7 Why do you think I challenge him every third time I see him in chat? lol

> Furthermore, because of its organizational independence and strict confidentiality policy, the Ombuds Office cannot alert University personnel about your situation without your express permission.
cool.

@GlenH7 I'm working on that, I swear :)

A: Why isn't Integer.MIN_VALUE equal to stored Integer.MIN_VALUE in variable?

durron597No one here has addressed the REASON why they're different objects. Obviously: System.out.println(new Integer(10) == new Integer(10)); outputs false, for reasons that have been discussed to death in the other answers to this question and in Comparing Integer objects But, why is that happening...

Man that question really made me mad when it came up in my ; duplicate review
7 upvotes and a checkmark for a blatantly incomplete answer.

user41796

@enderland Believe nothing. Trust no one.

A: Why do people use IP bans when IP addresses often change?

enderlandIs it actually effective? Why do people use IP address bans (e.g. to block a malicious user from an internet service) when IP addresses change often? I'm not sure this question has the right assumption. It seems to assume IP bans are ineffective enough that they shouldn't be used entirely. ...

same :)
@GlenH7 yeah. I don't know I guess, I'm not super skeptical of them since the lady I talked to on the phone reiterated a bunch about that too

user41796
@enderland That's the standard spiel to help explain why they can't actually do anything for you. #somebody'scynicaltoday.

@GlenH7 heh, I think interestingly this office was designed to not be able to do anything precisely so they can have confidentiality

user41796
Despite my cynicism, I suspect they'll be able to help guide you if nothing else.

I think what I want is reassurance I'm NOT crazy for being frustrated, and that my situation is not acceptable from the university perspective
Knowing that at least someone familiar with university processes thinks I have a "case" makes it a lot easier to be more confrontational (like what @durron597 was suggesting :P)

user41796
4:58 PM
I suspect the first answer is yes and the second answer is hazy.

fortunately it's been about 4.5 months now, that's got to be nearing the "ok this is screwed up" threshold :)

5:57 PM
@galhajaj probably better asked on programmers.stackexchange.comRichard Critten 51 secs ago
@RichardCritten - Too broad for SO likely means too broad for Programmers. This question is too vague and lacking in specifics. It would not fare well on Programmers. — GlenH7 17 secs ago

Q: OCaml criticism: is it still valid?

AndreaI am a complete newbie with OCaml. I have recently stumbled into this page listing a good amount of criticism towards OCaml. Seeing that the page it quite old (2007): which of the bullets points listed there are still true today? For instance: is it still true that it is impossible to print a ge...

user55340
@WorldEngineer conflicting answers (and changing versions?)

is this meant to be another "look how hilariously terrible Javascript is?"

@Ixrec of course

that example kinda reminds me of overloaded operators actually
I can't remember if the dot or the ternary is overloadable but equality definitely is, so you could probably do something equally wacky in C++ (and C#...? need to learn that language someday)

7:07 PM
@Ixrec I'm sure you can. That's why I'm a Java developer.

I hear you guys have reflection

@durron597 where does he say that?

7:23 PM
@Ampt: Adblock made a huge difference in surfing speed.

maybe it's just me but it feels like there have been fewer questions worth answering on the main site lately

7:37 PM
@RobertHarvey in my schedule for tomorrow (outta votes today). While we're at it, how about six more votes... at least votes down?
"The trouble with popularity" goes both ways. We can now all downvote these specific questions. — Jan Doggen 12 hours ago

@RobertHarvey I told you man

what do you mean?

now if only it would block the September questions ;)
@enderland adblock works by not loading ads. At all. so all that bandwidth to those full page ads? Yeah, that never even happens.

@Ampt ah, yeah. I was thinking the other way - that removing it made stuff faster... was confused

oh lol

7:43 PM
need coffee.. fortunately it's coffee day

But why would that be Cox-specific?

@RobertHarvey cox's ad servers are probably slow as piss - not waiting for them in page load makes the whole thing seem faster

Cox serves everyone's ads?

adblock plus is the best thing ever... I should donate money to them

I thought they were injecting ads into your pages - which means they probably host them

7:44 PM
Or is the proxy script just inefficient?

could be both

it frustrates me every time someone injects stuff into websites... my ISP did that when you were close to a limit of bandwidth

I sorta wonder why they think they even need to run a proxy script.

user55340
There is something out there about reselling advert space

@RobertHarvey to serve you more ads - duh.

user55340
7:47 PM
Each reselling is latency

Or have a look at your traffic. 'Course, I suppose they can do that without a proxy script.

TL;DR: Install AdBlock kids.

Doesn't help my phone much, though. I had to switch off the wifi because my phone calls kept cutting out.

does your phone use wifi for calling too?

It does. I suppose I can program it to favor the towers, but it does beg the question.
Skype is affected too.

7:49 PM
lol, are they trying to inject ads into your friggin phone calls?
what a joke...
tellin you - get a proxy
you don't even need a foreign one, just something to tunnel your traffic through so that Cox has to face decrypting your junk to intercept it

user55340
Real-time bidding (RTB) is a means by which advertising inventory is bought and sold on a per-impression basis, via programmatic instantaneous auction, similar to financial markets. With real-time bidding, advertising buyers bid on an impression and, if the bid is won, the buyer’s ad is instantly displayed on the publisher’s site. Real-time bidding lets advertisers manage and optimize ads from multiple ad-networks by granting the user access to a multitude of different networks, allowing them to create and launch advertising campaigns, prioritize networks and allocate percentages of unsold inventory...

@RobertHarvey heh my phone nearly exclusively uses wifi

user55340
The thing with this is that if you take too long, it sucks.

my work public wifi is pretty terribad right now, based on where I'm sitting I think

Double adblock, all the way man.

user55340
7:52 PM
There is also programmatic advertising which is another realm of slow in adverts.

it's almost a TRIPLE ADBLOCK
WOOOOOAH

it kind of blows my mind how much of the internet is funded purely based on advertising

I blame MadMen

user55340
8:16 PM
On general principle, I blame either @Ampt or @JimmyHoffa.

Isn't that kind of like blaming yourself though?

user55340
I blame my socks for making my feet stink.

> Find out why goals-based investing works
no way!
silly Vanguard and your email titles

@MichaelT this changes EVERYTHING!

This all sounds perfectly sensible until you need to grow something from the bottom up using little functions, and then it falls down because you can't test anything until you arrive at the top-level public call. — Robert Harvey 51 secs ago

8:23 PM
@RobertHarvey "it's a really good question" but you didn't upvote it? :P

I'm not sure that answer means an API as an endpoint, but the function contract
@RobertHarvey

> If you think the rest of the world should care about the existence of (and signature of) this method, why did you make it private?

@MichaelT I'm a principal now? Woot, you're all sent to detention!
Detention is a 2011 American satirical horror slasher comedy film film directed by Joseph Kahn, and co-written with Mark Palermo. The film premiered March 2011 in Austin, Texas at SXSW. Detention stars Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Spencer Locke, Shanley Caswell, Walter Perez, Organik and Erica Shaffer. Produced by Richard Weager and MaryAnne Tanedo. == Plot == The film centres on Riley Jones (Shanley Caswell), a suicidal social outcast at Grizzly Lake High School who harbours an unrequited love for ironically named hipster, and friend since childhood, Clapton Davis (Josh Hutcherson). Clapton is...
good luck

user55340
@JimmyHoffa you are a general principle.

user55340
Though school principals are different. They want to be your pal - and that's how you remember to spell that one.

8:38 PM
@MichaelT aw, you're so nice, which one am I? Can I be the (D)on't (R)un (W)ith (S)cissors Principle? DRWS is pretty general

> Pointing in the right direction is usually enough. I am not a beginner in programming by any means and I would say that my requirements are pretty clear in my question. I tried doing this by using an enum cause this made sense for me. However it seems like it is not the way it should be done. This is not really a "inheritance" problem. Just categorizing a few types of Tiles I suppose.

user41796
But is skipping with scissors okay?

It's a comment on a deleted answer

@Ampt is the (S)ock (P)uppets (S)mell (F)unny principle

@enderland Because the rest of the world should not care about it.

user55340
8:43 PM
I follow the way of testvius and write the tests that I need to.

I wouldn't need unit tests for private methods if there were a REPL in C# (hint, hint).

user55340
I have no problem with making the logic internals as package level private in Java.

@MichaelT what's the name of a piece in a data pipeline? A pipe?

user55340
There are two classes or test suited for a given class. One is the public methods. The other is the internals.

user55340
@JimmyHoffa packet. Chunk.

user55340
8:50 PM
The pipe is the process.

I'm coding out some stuff that's like cat | grep type behaviour, what do you call cat there? I called it generator but it has input too so... ? Processor?

user55340
Generator. The data is the stream.

user55340
And that is cat abuse.

it's essentially an interface { public IEnumerable<Things> Foo(Thing) } - it's not a generator because it can take a Thing... Generators don't have inputs, aye?

8:52 PM
I feel obligated to link the meta post about naming questions

(if I could assuage all the bullocks of people not understanding stuff I'd just call it an effect and it would live happily in my list monad ecosystem...)

@RobertHarvey cheezeburger? We had a call named that at Employer^...

in all seriousness I would find "stage" most intuitive for part of a "pipeline", and for command line in particular I'd probably just call them "tools", "utilities" or "programs"

@Ixrec stage, I rather like that..

user41796
8:54 PM
@JimmyHoffa I'd generally call something like that a stream processor

@Ixrec no, this is code

Stages have inputs, don't they?

user55340
Unix tools are based on the idea of io steams can be connected to each other.

to me "streams" sounds more like the communication mechanism/glue code than the parts that actually transform the data

yeah, I've got processor for the moment, but sometimes it doesn't require an input which is where the confusion is occurring... but you know what, you're all correct. StreamProcessor. Yep. The initial one will take a seed stream. Done.

user41796
8:55 PM
@Ixrec Hence stream processor. :-)

A stream means something different in Java than it does in C#.

hm, to me stream processor sounds like it takes in streams then possibly outputs something else
stream transformer? stream mapper?

@MichaelT CSP, communicating sequential processes :)

@gnat winner winner chicken dinner just for knowing that in and of itself

@RobertHarvey streams that were introduces in Java 8 are supposed to mean the same as in C#. And as in Scheme / SICP. These are not IO streams, docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/api/java/util/stream/Stream.html

9:03 PM
grumble, I should just have grabbed the reactive extensions, I'm practically hacking up my own implementation of it at this point...

@RobertHarvey The thing about custom mod flags is that they can take much longer to get handled
Been sitting on two of those "This answer doesn't really add anything, and can be safely deleted or converting to comment without hurting anything" since the last time we talked about it.

9:25 PM
There seriously has to be some solution to the build problems that occur here.

9:38 PM
@RobertHarvey a good build engineer get's paid a decent wage for a reason... imagine if your job was full time working on reengineering and automating their build system, starting to see how it can be real work?

user55340
Netapp had a team of 7 (including manager) who were the build systems team. Build, deployment, packaging, source control and bug tracking was their domain.

9:57 PM
@GlenH7 that conversation went really well - I got a lot of very practical ideas for escalation and some reinforcement that I have some influence at least (though not much :P)

@enderland Great!

2 hours later…
11:40 PM
@MichaelT how awesome was it having folks living under the stairs and behind the walls making everything just work

The first two questions are more on-topic on Programmers Stack Exchange. It's largely a stylistic issue: just pick whatever expresses your particular problem the clearest. — Rufflewind 51 secs ago
