@Simon - suggestion - put the current filter in to the Duga Playground, and the new filter applied to The Whiteboard. That way people can see things that are being excluded....

@rolfl exactly what was planned...

See, I am more than just a bit-bucket.

26 mins ago, by Simon André Forsberg
@JimmyHoffa yup, any messages not matching the filter but still containing "programmers" will be logged to Duga's Playground (as linked by @GlenH7)

OIC.

@SimonAndréForsberg I would still like to just get a text file with all historical programmers matches you've had line-per-line, then I could toss it into a regexp tester and try all kinds of various match criteria until I come up with one that matches on everything I want and excludes everything I don't
all you have to do is write them somewhere as they come in, then you can hand out the data for us to try and come up with match criteria for you
would have to be the ones you included and the ones you excluded to be a comprehensive dataset for coming up with criteria against

6:09 PM
I do like the idea of having the filtered messages come here, and the other messages go to another room. The other messages are still interesting.

@SimonAndréForsberg is your bot widget on github?

@JimmyHoffa this won't do as a list of matches? chat.stackexchange.com/…

@SimonAndréForsberg is it a list that matched or a list that was only filtered out? The way it was described sounded like the ladder
to test criteria for matches we'd need a list that had the matches and exclusions

If you pass an instance of a derived class, such as MyCustomEventArgs, to a method (say, an Event Handler that takes an EventArgs parameter), can you upcast that EventArgs method and gain access to MyCustomEventArgs? Or will that not even compile?

@JimmyHoffa it is currently the list of all comments @Duga has retrieved containing the word "programmers"

6:13 PM
oh

@RobertHarvey typecasting EventArgs to MyCustomEventArgs should compile

@RobertHarvey so long as it's the right type. This is the sort of thing people typically use as for

or (MyCustomEventArgs), depending on the language...

Alright, so if I have public void MyCustomEventHandler(object sender, EventArgs e), I can raise an event on MyCustomEventHandler having the signature of (object whatever, MyCustomEventArgs e)?
Bah. Never mind. That's not gonna work.

It's mistard

Mustard

Whis-tard.

user55340
You wish you had a mustard museum near by.

Presumably, there's some cooking purpose for that?
You can't just put whiskey in anything, and expect it to improve.
(Though I know there are some who would disagree. but taste tests at a BAC of .15 and above don't count).

user55340
I tried it. It's a caviar of mustard- the whole grain.

6:43 PM
It's the whiskey part that I'm struggling with.

user55340
You need to try it.

I need to try a lot of things. Doesn't mean I'll actually get around to them, though. Zip lining and cliff diving come to mind.

user55340
That one though is a crunch and hint of flavor on a sandwich type

user55340
Or in a potato salad... Though there are even better ones for that

Can we get a speedy closure on this one?

Q: What is the "opposite" of a scripting language?

IQAndreasIn my mind, a scripting language is one you use to crate a piece of code that runs from beginning to end synchronously, and then quits (i.e. a script). When coded "correctly", they only require and declare the functions necessary for that specific instance of the script. Languages built for these...

Sometimes duga brings some interesting comments...

@SimonAndréForsberg Hi! Yes please use the answer on the Meta question as a guide for making it more specific
You can continue to have the filtered messages make it to the Whiteboard
Lower Priority if it is not too much trouble, continue to send unfiltered Programmers messages to Duga's Playground for right now
Here... I will even write these in User Story format for you
> As a Programmers user, I need comments on StackOverflow with the word "programmers" case insensitive to go to Duga's Playground, so that I can read interesting comments mentioning programmers on Stack Overflow.
Acceptance Critera: I see any and all comments mentioning the word "programmers" in Duga's Playground.

shouldn't you write a user story before doing the implementation? ;)

> As a Programmers user, I need filtered comments with the words "try/on/at/to" followed by the word "programmers" to go to The Whiteboard, so that I can police cretins that encourage cross posting to a site they know nothing about.
Acceptance Criteria: I see far less false positives being posted to the Whiteboard by Duga
@enderland You and your book learnin'
that aint how the real world works

thanks, @maple_shaft, although I am not used to work with user stories. That's just some mumbo-jumbo to me. I understand what they mean though, at least in this case.

@maple_shaft wait you mean that everyone goes through all this work to create processes and then ignores them in reality? BUT WHAT DOES MIDDLE MANAGEMENT DO

As stackoverflow has grown it's unfortunate that overmoderation has killed what are actually helpful questions. This was not an unreasonable or overly general question, and it's one many programmers would reasonable ask and want a community answer on. Classifying this as too general may be a fun exercise of moderator power, but actions like that relegate stackoverflow to answering questions related to minutae rather than questions which are actually helpful. I note that many of the most popular (and useful) questions on SO would be closed as too general by today's overzealous moderators. — tohster 1 min ago
You might check if this is on-topic on programmers.se. It is more of a whiteboard type of question than a keyboard type of question. Leaving a comment on your post doesn't solve much. You might post on Meta Stack Overflow to ask for judgement by a wider audience. If the community there decides I voted wrong I'm happy to help re-open your question. — rene 53 secs ago
I was going to ask, in your opinion, should this be over on programmers.stackexchange.com instead? I've seen many similar questions here, which is why I placed it here. But perhaps we're all wrong. — CXJ 2 mins ago

@enderland creates the processes, I would think that's self evident from what you just said

For the record: This doesn't belong on Programmers.StackExchange either AFAIK. — Simon André Forsberg 9 secs ago

please let me know if that comment is correct ^^

@SimonAndréForsberg It is, and I added a backing comment to that effect

For a moment, I had been confused by all the "No, this doesn't go to CR!" comments until I read the head of the comment thread.

user41796
"Oh! So that's why they pounced on this so quickly.... " :-)

One question, one user refer the poor OP to CR and another one to Programmers...

Does ../ not work in Windows bat scripts? This is disappointing me to no end.

user41796
@ThomasOwens shouldn't that be `..\` ie. wrong slash orientation

If that's the problem, I'm going to just lose it in my cube,

8:58 PM
stackoverflow.com/questions/388242/… - This question would also be closed as too broad for the audience here, despite the fact that it has actually helped thousands of programmers and, wonderfully, as survived as a triumph of usefulness over rules. You are right that this is a meta topic, though. — tohster 1 min ago

I think the Code Review regulars are much faster and "more aggressive" than you folks when it comes to responding to these Stack Overflow comments.

user41796
@SimonAndréForsberg We'll work on getting better

user41796
What's the correct name of the C/C++/C#/Java(?) anti-pattern with two libraries ending up referencing each other? Is it circular reference?

@ThomasOwens / is unix, \ is dos. Send my apologies to your cube walls.

@GlenH7 That's what I've always called it.

9:03 PM
@GlenH7 yes.

user41796
Thanks.

Apologies if the point was not obvious, but the question has over 4000 votes because people were actually allowed to answer it, and not because it was closed. If moderators had closed the question as "too broad" as soon as it was posted, it would not have 4000 votes and, more importantly, thousands of bona fide programmers would have been deprived of the very helpful answers which garnered the votes and popularity. Is the community better or worse for having the question answered? — tohster 1 min ago

user41796
I think this question wants code for an answer, and the questions we have 1, 2, 3 are all about the concepts. Am I missing something with the current SO question?

@CXJ - The impression I get is that you're looking for a code backed answer for this problem. That's why I think it fits better here on SO. The relevant questions on Progs (see 1, 2, 3) are much more abstract and won't directly answer what I think is your question. — GlenH7 23 secs ago

9:30 PM
@startoftext: That's not what I meant by copy/paste code. By copy/paste code, I mean trying to cobble together a program by copy/pasting code snippets from the Internet. Real programmers actually write code that meets their needs!Robert Harvey ♦ 1 min ago

@Duga let's not get too up in arms now- we all know the industry is probably 30% copy-pasted samples at a minimum....

@Duga I bet @RobertHarvey just wrote "programmers" in that comment so that you would post it...

Be funny to keep a running total of what percentage of Duga's comments are from users in here when the comment is written

It's kind of amazing the level of detail a panoramic x-ray can provide

@enderland just do some HTTP requests and some code and count!

Looking at the blown up image, I can tell the head pattern of the screws from the implant

@GlenH7 3D CT is where it's at

user41796
@JimmyHoffa really hope I don't have to go down that route again

user41796
At that point, might as well get an MRI done

@GlenH7 ? why? MRI's are way less pleasant than CT
also CT and MRI are for different purposes

user41796
MRI would provide a lot more level of detail in this case

9:48 PM
they provide different types of detail... my kid unfortunately gets plenty of both, the MRIs are great for structural stuff and ortho type things because it gives better visibility of joint tissues, but the 3D CT with contrast is a lot more precise for lots of things, especially anything arterial
though I may have just lost track of why they do one vs the other by now as they're always doing both
either way, the CT images I've seen look way cooler than the MRI ones, and so much faster.. whoever decided MRI machines should make all that noise should be brained.

user41796
I haven't had an MRI yet, so can't speak to the noise level. CTs are super quick though, that's for sure.

@SimonAndréForsberg That's just some dumbass who thought they could refute my request to attribute their copy/paste posts by trying to point out that I had not attributed one of my posts (which actually is attributed).

@GlenH7 MRI's last 20-60 minutes depending on what area they're doing it on, and you have to lay still with a machine around you that sounds like a fire truck siren mixed with a hurricane
the volume level is roughly comparable with modern office building fire alarms

user41796
@JimmyHoffa tell me they give you earplugs

10:03 PM
@GlenH7 yes, they're absolutely necessary

user41796
I don't think I could tolerate that at all without something to cover my ears. I hate when they test the alarms at work

suggest you bring some earbud headphones if you can to wear under the ear muffs they'll give you or whatever else so you can listen to something distracting

user41796
I don't have one scheduled yet, but that's a good tip. I'm surprised they would allow earbuds within an MRI

maybe not? I guess I don't know off hand
I don't remember rather
it's been a while, you're probably right. I think I just remember they gave me a nice damp warm rag to put over my eyes and ear plugs or muffs and a pillow, and basically said sit still. Actually I think they might have given me headphones they could talk to me on? I don't remember precisely, somehow they could talk to me though

user41796
MRI's are strictly metal free zones because of the magnets. I'd think a pair of magnets sitting in your ears would be a horrible no-no. Soft, squishy, block-that-horrific-noise would be godsend though

10:08 PM
you can get normal earplugs that would work well I'd think

user41796

yeah they must have given me some of those

user41796
best advice I've seen so far is to take heavy doses of tranquilizers in order to sleep through the procedure

user41796
"half bottle of xanax? Check! Here we go!" </just-kidding>

@GlenH7 this is definitely my approach to many things, but in the event of a test I tend to think it might be advisable to avoid, wouldn't want to mess with test results. Though can't imagine it would in the case of something like an MRI, depending on what they're looking at

One of my primary cares was able to play that type of a comment on me, back at the beginning of this saga.

10:24 PM
@RobertHarvey oh, like the good old "but you started it"

user41796
@SimonAndréForsberg The timestamps in that set of comments is quite telling

10:38 PM
@WarrenP this idea was a back up idea but I ended up getting into the idea of RTTI and learning how to use it. What a good way to try it and lastly, good thing its my own code base so no need to worry bout other programmers otherwise like you said, a different approach would of been discussed initially ;) — Daniel Hobson 1 min ago

Are the images in the same directory as the HTML and classes? BTW 1) <param name="image" value="0.jpg"> <param name="image" value="1.jpg"> applet parameter names have to be unique! After all, when getParam("image") is called, do you expect it to return 0.jpg or 1.jpg? 2) Why code an applet? @whatsisname wasting time? Sounds like my world.

so we have this ECG device
people have complained a lot because it takes like 10 seconds to start up and get going
so I got the application to start it up and go in about a quarter second
except there is a ton of noise right away for a good few seconds
turns out it was always like that, but they never really bothered to fix it because the application always took a long time to start up anyway
ugh

oh great!
so fixing one problem causes another problem to be more apparent...

so now the application takes almost as long to start up, though it's because I have to put in a delay timer instead of it just being slow
