Q: Letting employees choose their own IDE

Raiden616I manage a team of developers and am evaluating the company's development standards in preparation for some new employees. Previously the tools we used have been pretty industry standard (e.g. Visual Studio) but we are now moving into more development with open-source languages such as PHP. Sinc...

you guys want that?

Went rock climbing (indoor gym) with brother, niece and nephew today. Went well. Rather cheap too (belay system didn't need adults in harness... kids were "pay your age" so that was $7 together). My niece went from climbing only up about 2' to going to the top of an easy wall.

user55340
Nephew enjoyed it, but didn't quite have long enough legs to be able to do the stretches necessary to go up... or the attention span for that type of activity (give him a box of lego... thats another story).

@MichaelT you're living much closer to them now, yes? Enjoying that?

user55340
@JimmyHoffa Yep and yep. Easier to do things... even simple things like "go out to breakfast on the weekend"

Enjoying Madison is it? After your stint at walden, I should think it's a welcome change
Find any place nearby that sells a good variety of the local wineries stock yet?

user55340
I also am enjoying the "living in a larger city". While I miss the north woods ("drive 10m north and you're in national forests") the "walk 5 min and you're got half a dozen places to choose from for dinner" is quite nice.

user55340
1:48 AM

Cool. Sounds like everything's working out rather in the positive for ya then a bit

user55340
I will admit I haven't checked out the wines there yet though.

user55340
There's also Willey St. Co-op which has quite a bit local things (though they're also a bit on the... hippy-dippy side... there's an aisle that is "aroma therapy")

user55340
But there are also a number of other local food and wine places in the area.

user41796
1:51 AM
@enderland No. It'll descend into an opinion fest.

user55340
There's also (if you want to go to a larger place...) woodmans-food.com/liquor

user55340
This is wisconsin... we like our beers.

course, we have a few chains of wal-mart sized liquor stores here, but I understand most of the country doesn't have such. Makes sense Wisconsin might.

user55340
There's also a Trader Joe's in the area - which does a good selection of beer and wine.

user55340
No BevMo out here... just lots of smaller places... and Woodmans is reasonably large too.

1:55 AM
If you haven't heard of "premature optimization" then you might enjoy reading what Donald Knuth had to say on the matter. Here is a sample of his quotes: "Premature optimization is the root of all evil (or at least most of it) in programming." "Programmers waste enormous amounts of time thinking about, or worrying about, the speed of noncritical parts of their programs, and these attempts at efficiency actually have a strong negative impact when debugging and maintenance are considered." — bhspencer 41 secs ago

@whatsisname That reminds of a story by the developers of LinuxBIOS (now coreboot), where harddisks seemed to be randomly disappearing. After quite some headscratching and bughunting, they figured out … there was no bug. They were just booting faster than the microcontroller on the drive, so when the driver enumerated the devices on the bus, the disk wasn't there yet!

user55340
Also, remember this map:

user55340

user55340
The grocery stores all have sizeable beer/liqour departments.

user41796
@MichaelT TJ's does a great job for cheaper but still very tasty wines

1:58 AM
and usually the gas stations too

user55340
@whatsisname But they don't often have a good selection.

Actually if you wanna to put it this way then nodeAt(2) is O(2) .. nodeAt(3) is O(3) ..and so on. You're thinking too much. As programmers we try to avoid thinking as much as possible. — Qwertyzw 1 min ago

user55340
The challenge is that the wine that I really like (Tenbra Ridge) is a 2h drive away and only sells out of the tasting room... but thats not too far.

@MichaelT that's not terrible so long as you stock up when you go

user55340
@JimmyHoffa Nope. Cash or check only too...

user55340
2:02 AM
last time I went I got 9 bottles. I had 3, parents got 6... and I wish I got more.

user55340
The other challenge is Carlos Creek doesn't ship to Wisconsin... and that is a 5h drive from here (one way)

I have a glass of Glenn Fiddich in front of me. Happy Friday

user55340
Might not be as bad... I think I can slip into MN and get some.

user55340
Had a CiderBoys.

user55340
And some mustard earlier.

An entire shelf of spirit mustards.

now that's an entirely new concept to me, spirit mustard?\
Never even heard of such.

user55340
Gotta talk some sense into @RobertHarvey though...

You can't just put whiskey in anything, and expect it to improve.

user55340
Most of them are beer... though there are some other varieties in there.

user55340

@MichaelT disagree.

user55340
Another whiskey mustard...

user55340

user55340
2:08 AM
Nope... nevermind... same one, different lighting.

@RobertHarvey I should flag this as offensive..
@MichaelT I assume it's just used like normal mustard? Has a bit more bite from the whiskey? Sounds delicious.

user55340
> A magnificent combination of the spirit cognac and spice of the Red Pepper in this coarse brown mustard. Try on sausage or cheese.

Ingredients : Distilled Vinegar, Mustard Seed, Sugar, Black Pepper, Chili Pepper, Salt, Spices, Turmeric, Cognac

user55340

user55340
@JimmyHoffa Its a whole grain mustard... so its very texture based and thats the most noticeable part of it (which is a very nice texture!) The whiskey is there with the mustard.

user55340

2:10 AM
@MichaelT eh iduno... I'm a bit picky about crup that can get stuck in my toofers. No fan of lots of normal things like popcorn for that reason...

user55340
> A little bourbon, a little molasses, a little mustard and whole mustard seeds--a perfect glaze for a baked ham, turkey and even roasted root vegetables.

Ingredients : Yellow and Black Mustard Seeds, Vinegar, Water, Pure Cane Sugar, Molasses, Bourbon, Brown Sugar, Salt, Spices.

wholegrain mustard sounds a bit prone to getting things stuck in my maw...

user55340
@JimmyHoffa its more like caviar than popcorn. Small seeds that pop with slight pressure.

user55340
Not at all... its really quite good.

@MichaelT oh that sounds ok. Except for the part about caviar, yech. Never ever. Grody.

user55340
2:12 AM
I'm not a caviar fan either... but the whole grain mustards I love.

Will have to get my hands on one to try... sounds curious, especially the part about the whiskey.

user55340
> Earthy and rough-cut, with a strong Irish whisky flavor. Delicious with sausages and smoked meats; adds interest to cheese dishes, and zest to marinades; gives extra flavor to stuffing.

Ingredients: Malt Vinegar, Mustard Seeds (33%), Water, Honey, Salt, Whisky (1%), Spices.

I already am quite a fan of the mustards that make your nose feel like it's simultaneously growing hairs and singing them off at the same time

user55340

Summer Sausage + spicy mustard is a recipe for the most pleasant tasting ulcer you'll ever experience

user55340
2:14 AM
Its a sweet mustard... kind of. But picture sweet honey mustard with the Chinese mustard that opens your sinuses 150% mixed in.

user15026
@JimmyHoffa Truth

user15026
@MichaelT mmmmmmmmmmm

user55340
> A sweet hot Russian Style nose tingling mustard. This is the perfect mustard for dipping your egg rolls. It has a powerful nasal kick. This wonderful sweet hot mustard won the silver medal at the 2002 Napa Valley Mustard Competition.

ok the chinese level is a bit much for me. I can lightly dab that stuff for like egg rolls

user55340
That one is actually from Oregon. You may be able to find it in the grocery store (I've found the brand in most)

2:16 AM
but I'm thinking more like the true eastern block mustard, solid punch in the face but doesn't try to burn your tongue at the same time

user55340
Give that one a try.

Alright, will have to when I see it

user55340
You won't find this one though...

user55340

> KEEP IN MIND
Your mother does not work here. If you spill this mustard, for crying out loud, clean it up yourself!

CAUTION:
Clinical studies on the effects of this mustard on laboratory animals are a waste of time.

Warning:
Ingredients in this mustard are closer than they appear.

Refrigerate after opening. Eat your vegetables.

Contains no moving parts.

user55340
One needs to be aware of the cycle of Wisconsin culinary focus:
Beer -> Pretzels -> Mustard -> Beer Mustard

@MichaelT haha that's hilarious

> The battling robots are back! Twelve years after BattleBots ended its run on Comedy Central, ABC has picked up a reimagined take of the killer robot combat sport, from Whalerock Industries and the creators of the original BattleBots franchise, Ed Roski and Greg Munson. Former ABC topper Lloyd Braun executive produces the project, which has received a six-episode order to air this summer.

Not the silly robot one. Battle bots again!

4:30 AM
Mmmmm battle bots!
@MichaelT Is that the bar monad?
@whatsisname Needs more CAN protocol.

5:11 AM
That's correct, they are not available in C#. Bit of history, the original classic VB6 had default instances, and they were not included in VB.Net 1.0 and 1.1 because Microsoft wanted to make VB.Net "on par" with C# in terms of correct OOP. There was such an outcry from VB programmers making the transition to .Net, though, that they were brought back in VB.Net 2.0 and they've stayed ever since. — Idle_Mind 12 secs ago

@Duga I'll admit it's a good idea.... but I'm seeing far more false positives than actual recommendations.
I.E. above
Maybe tune it to look for mentions of Programmers.SE instead of just programmers?

5:29 AM
Can you give me a hint on how to do this? Small hint- You have to write a program (Programmers all around the world recommend this) — Bhargav Rao 1 min ago

Thank You for Your answer. I think I have to rephrase my question: Why does it behave like that? What is the intention of the programmers to make it behave like that? My issue is that I made a lot of different diagrams with same-sized boxes to make the formatting consistent. Then I realized I didn't have enough space in one of them, but if I scaled all of them a bit smaller, but still comfortable to read. According to Your suggestion, I would have had to resize some hundred panels and the spaces between them, which would have been tedious and error-prone. — user3240047 1 min ago

I was just using Xcode for my test, the real example comes from Data Structures for Game Programmers by Ron Penton, so I'm assuming you can get away with it in most instances. @SebastianRedl — Congomon 1 min ago

How are electric charges dealt with in an FDTD simulation?
I know how to calculate the curl of E and B fields to model propagating waves
But what about the effect of charges at certain points in the grid on the E field

Although this was clearly done to save on keywords, the reuse of void in this fashion serves only to confuse. But all C programmers gotta stomach it, I suppose... — SevenBits 26 secs ago

@Ampt Looks like a very dangerous combination game of curling and Russian roulette.
