@MattSamuel Edits should not change the meaning of a question. Editing a question to include a great deal of context which wasn't there in the first place changes the meaning of the question, and should be avoided. If an editor thinks they know what the author "actually" intended, but the author has abandoned the question, then the editor is advised to ask a new question with the updated context.

What is the point of "saving" a poor questions? Particularly, what is the point of saving a poor question with no answers and little input from the author?

Personally I do think there is a place for retroactive context from someone other than op, but it shouldn't take the form of an attempt or initial thoughts.

There were many discussions about this on meta. For example: Editing someone else's question to add context and some of the posts linked there. It was mentioned a few times in this room: chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=21106&room=2165
Some users recommend editing. Others recommend reposting. (There have been complaints that edits "put words into the OPs mouth". Again, some discussions can be found in this room.)

@AlexanderGruber This is a much better way of phrasing my "don't add context which wasn't there in the first place". Adding definitions, theorems, references to texts, etc. is fine. Inventing a motivation or attempt is not. Adding links or references does not change the meaning of the question, while adding an attempt or initial thought does, in that it changes (potentially) the level of answer one might provide.
