@XanderHenderson Fair enough. It was just so short that it's a borderline effort, but it's also a new user.
Well, maybe not that new.
@XanderHenderson @RRL @JoséCarlosSantos: Not an answer. Not math.

@user21820 I am on the fence regarding D8 (though I have voted to redelete it this time around). The question appears to be asking about the history of the proof, and Henno Brandsma's answer might be worth keeping. On the other hand, the accepted answer belies this interpretation, hence my vote to delete. I am willing to be convinced, however.
@user21820 I believe that D13 would be eligible for Rooma deletion in a month if it had a(nother) downvote.
That being said, I don't think that the question is terrible, and I am happy to see it remain on the site, but closed as a duplicate. It is a reasonable road sign to the linked question.

@XanderHenderson Some people have interpreted it to be a question about history. In that case, it should go to HSM. But the reason I think it should be deleted are: (1) the attitude of the asker, including the complete lack of any follow-up comments whatsoever; (2) the tag was not added by the asker; (3) the asker had accepted a non-history answer; (4) No effort of any sort was put in (whether or not to find a proof or find Cantor's proof). Convinced? =)

@user21820 As I said, I voted to delete it. That said, I don't find (1) or (2) to be particularly compelling, (3) is quite compelling (and was the reason I voted to delete), and I don't find (4) compelling (I've never found the "lack of effort" argument compelling; while effort can provide context, I find that, more often than not, it amounts to gobbledeegook, and is not helpful).
I also don't think that questions about history of math are a priori off-topic, though I do agree that HSM is a better venue for such questions.
Of course, I was looking for someone to convince me that the question should be kept, given that I voted to delete it. :)

Heh. Anyway I think that history questions with a significant amount of mathematics required in the answer is on-topic for Math SE, but history questions that are just about historical facts should go to HSM. But this reason is never crucial to me because I care about question quality and very much less about whether it exactly fits the site or not.

@user21820 do you know a good version of this question on the site?
