I felt pushed to new limits with my intellectual capacity for math ... it was amazing ... to work with others on here ...
now, it feels like a ghost town :(

@D.Hutchinson Not sure when the "back then" you're referring to was, but I've been here for nearly seven years. And I agree with your sentiments.

I see ...
So, were you here since the very beginning, pretty much?

@D.Hutchinson I wasn't in the "beta" stage, before MSE graduated to a "full fledged stack exchange site", but very shortly after.

I see

@DavidReed Being argumentative is a reason for a timeout? Is it possible for honest thinking people to abstain from argument?

Hi @MichaelHardy :P

@amWhy ok, All expression of disagreement with you is "histrionics". I have bent over backwards to avoid acrimony in this forum and others frequented by people who participate in closing questions. They are a community who demand conformance to their ways.

...............................................................

Europeans? Asians? Americans? I wonder who "they" are, @MichaelHardy
or is this not cultural at all?

@MichaelHardy That is a nice self portrait of yourself. You are a man who demands conformance to your ways.
Now, @Michael, are you going to stop belaboring the issue of a question that was closed but is now reopen? Isn't that what you sought? Let go, then. If you continue causing problems and can't let go of an issue that was resolved, I'll put the room on a time out.

@everybody The good news that can be kept in mind is : Since most questions that are deleted are HW style problems, the vast majority of these question-askers' are students, and will still be able to turn to their professors during office hours for guidance, which is really more ideal anyways as they will get more individualized and in-person attention.

@DavidReed Indeed.

12:38 AM
@DavidReed Indeed, that would be a more appropriate forum for those questions, as (near as I can figure) MSE is not meant to be a "Help me with my homework" site.

@D.Hutchinson How long have you been around? Seems like under your current username/profile, it's been 4 months on MSE? So what do you mean when you say MSE has really declined? Over the last four months?

@user21820 @amWhy @XanderHenderson Our favorite 8th grader is at it again! I need to determine whether this answer should be downvoted or deleted because the last two paragraphs are wrong or the whole thing is wrong.

A: Question about u-substitution method.

David ReedConceptually, the reason has to do with the fact that you are inducing a change in your coordinate system. You are correct that the dx is just a dummy variable, but a u-substitution also changes the FUNCTION ITSELF from $f(x)$ to $g = (f \circ x)(u)$. You can show using the chain-rule (as indicat...

I'm thinking the whole thing is wrong with tidbits of truth in it. He has screwed up the domain of u, and this whole thing about "connected intervals" is so absurd.
actually domain of u is correct

Actually the whole thing is correct, his wording is just really off-putting. I'm going to take did's advice and stop reviewing posts while half awake. If someone could upvote the question...I did not realize my downvote was irreversible.

@amWhy <− And one more here.

@Did @amWhy @ZacharySelk @XanderHenderson: This and this are quite useless for mathematics students of today. Also note the contradiction between "absolute freedom of speech" and "hardcore Russellians" with a creed.

Please keep an eye on this (currently deleted answer) which has been closed, deleted, undeleted, deleted, undeleted, deleted .... Five users have been involved in its three deletions, including me on two of them. Four users have been involved in its undeletions, one of which is an answerer who stands to lose 82 points from it's deletion, who participated in each undeletion.
@amWhy oops, I meant "currently deleted question"!

@amWhy I am now.

@MetaEd Hello there! I think you must be a little like me, in terms of not leaving rooms... even while I work, or sleep.... My avatar can be seen usually, in multiple chats; and I rarely even bother to sign out of MSE/SE

@amWhy Yes, very often the chat window is still open even when I'm AFK overnight.

I think when I pinged you last, I was hoping I might get some advice; the chat become a bit acrinomious, and in particular, one user was still blowing off steam regarding the closure of a question, that had in fact, been reopened. I ended up using "time outs"... (I don't know how to do kick-mutes, or even if I can). The time outs in the chatroom helped, though, and was never attributed to any single user.

8:50 PM
@amWhy How can we make that question die forever? Please?

I discussed the matter with quid, and Daniel (both of them are mods), and they suggested to flag the question if it is undeleted again. It's been undeleted again, and quid said, and Daniel verified, that a moderator can solidify the next deletion, for good. Now I'm waiting and hoping. (I flagged the question, notified quid, and pinged DanielFischer in the math mod office. But another mod flag re the question, seeking to lay it to rest, for good, wouldn't hurt matters.)

PSQ by 1 repper. I have commented to inform him of site policy. I personally think its best to give them the benefit of the doubt and inform them they need to demonstrate effort and give them a chance to edit before deleting. But certainly this should be placed on hold I think

@DavidReed I'll check back in an hour and a half (and a couple minutes) to vote to close then. (I've spent all my up/down votes and all my closevotes today, to be replenished in a few minutes plus 1.5 hours.

Wow, @TheGreatDuck is back with us! :p

indeed

@TheGreatDuck How goes it? Any hassles about your profile attachment? Oops, I thought you attached it or posted a link in your profile again. Nothing wrong with it whatsoever!
@TheGreatDuck Anyway, always glad to have you around!
