Sorry if I'm in the wrong place.
This looked like a general chat for the bicycle stack exchange.
Recently there was a post that was put on hold for good reason.
I'd like to try to edit the question and get it into better shape because it concerns a very important topic to all bicyclists.
The post is here: https://bicycles.stackexchange.com/questions/61794/vehicles-and-our-safety
I was thinking about editing it to something like "Are cameras a good way to bring reckless drivers to justice?" but that felt like a legal question.
@DavidD If you want to ask some questions like that, you should probably just write whole new questions.
I think "Are cameras a good way to bring reckless drivers to justice?" is adequately on-topic and reasonably answerable by some of our users.
Thanks

After more looking I'm pretty sure the question would be flagged as a duplicate.

Q: If I report intentional dangerous driving to police, will it have any effect?

sixtyfootersdudeToday I was riding ~3 feet out from parked cars (dooring is the most common way to get killed) and this pickup truck comes up behind me and just lays on its horn for an entire block. The driver was also revving his engine and coming within a foot or two of my back wheel. The driver intentionally...

Did you mean that one?

@DavidD while certainly its an interesting question for discussion, its not a good fit for SE because there's no one good answer. Also, its massively dependent on location in the world, and the attitudes of any police you have to deal with.
So too much variability means it will be closed as "too broad"
Good fit questions tend to have definite answers.
That said - its a good question to ask here in the free-form chat
My opinion - cameras don't do shit to protect you in the moment. If its going wrong, its going to go wrong no matter how many cameras are around.
Police attitude to video footage is always variable. The camera offers one perspective and unlike an edited movie doesn't show anything else.
So at best a video is "supporting evidence" to a sworn written statement.
That said, if I'm dead or not communicating, the camera might be the only thing to show driver could be lying.
My camera is wide angle but at 80 degres there's still 280 degrees unseen. Plus the microphone doesn't work that well when its in the waterproof case
I once came across a recent accident while riding, first on the scene. In that case, I dropped my bike in a way to cover the scene with the camera, and forgot it (to the point I forgot to tell the police when they arrived) Later, the po were very interested in the view. Turned out they had security camera footage from a camera 150 metres down the road, but it was dark and IR didn't reach that far.
Police like to not show all their cards, which is generally fine. Depends if the officer/office is working for or against you.
That's it for my waffle-reply. Notice its a lot of opinion and personal experience, which could easily be opposite to someone else's experiecnes.
@DavidD thoughts ? Where do you ride?
I think I know the pickup driver from the question I linked above. Must have met that murderous bastard once when I was cycling along Shaw in Toronto.
sadly, he has a global family of pickup brothers.
22:37
Somehow they won. For me it took the joy of of cycling in Toronto.
@Criggie I agree with your opinion. After doing a little research it became clear to me that the only way to win was not to play. I gave up fighting with cars a long time ago. It's trails only for me.

yeah I see your point - sucks to ride in a combat zone. Personally I commute ~26 km each day, and there's something noteworthy every week, though not every day.
@DavidD Could you modify your route to be more back-streets? The best path for a bike is not always the same route a vehicle would take.
@Criggie I literally ride through a military firing range every now and then.
There were tanks last time I passed through.
Ehehehehe I bet that's good motivation!
@DavidD If you ever get the chance to travel, try riding a bike in the places you visit.
Certainly motivation to pick up the pace and get through ;)
hehehe I got a new jersey last week... won it in a competition
Only problem? The back looks like this
X marks the target...
23:49
Bloody great target on your back :-\ Only way it could be worse is if it was a rondel.
heh
Oh, my coach gave me a new helmet the other day. This one: giro.com/en/men/mens-bike/mens-bike-featured/aether-mips/p/…
ouch spendy.
My helmet cost $75, which is only $50 USD
Yeah. It was free for me, though...
My previous helmet was about ₪100, so around $30USD?
The Giro one doesn't really work with my GoPro attachment, though :/
I hate cameras on helmets
its like riding along with a knife at your throat waiting for something to go wrong.
The case that people cite as it being dangerous was proven to not actually have been made worse by the camera on the helmet; that was speculation on the part of a reporter, later disproved.
