@Donald.McLean too soon to judge that

@Donald.McLean It could be going better, but I don't think there is anything saying we're dead in the water yet.

it's going better than the other two betas I've been a part of - and one of them is public now :P

3:03 PM
@Dom That was actually a joke. I have a peculiar sense of humor.

@Donald.McLean Who decides if we live or die?
This is the first beta I've taken part in.

5:54 PM
@CarlH SE staff

What's the criteria?

6:11 PM
@CarlH it's really up to judgement call/voting of the staff members that have influence for it, but meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/q/1223/78 can give a hint

@CarlH Our job is to write good questions and answers and to work together to create reasonable content criteria. If we do that, everything else will come together.

Dom
@Donald.McLean Don't forget about solidifying a scope which the site is about.

6:27 PM
I guess it depends on who decides which questions are good. Is that based on the votes, answer ratio, etc?

no
votes, accepted answers don't matter unless they're inconsistent

@CarlH Votes, votes to close, and meta questions. Those are all ways of establishing site scope (what I called "content criteria").
Vote early and often. Not just on content, but also on meta. High vote totals on meta questions help firmly establish clear guidelines.

agreed, but votes don't directly help graduation, only indirectly

To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure what this site is supposed to be about.

@CarlH That's partly what the private beta is for, so that the sites members can figure out "what this site is supposed to be about".

6:38 PM
the purpose has not not been stated clearly, but the questions are pretty indicative
I think it'll do fine
we need more discussion/voting on this question

Q: Should questions dealing with legality be allowed?

Zach SaucierThus far we have the following questions regarding the legality of music related situations: How can I easily find music recordings that are copyright-free (in the public domain)? If ticket scalping is illegal, why are sites like StubHub allowed to operate? Permission for remixes? Do you need o...

My view is that it's supposed to be a Music Q&A site, not a legal advice site.

that's not what your answer says, @Carl :P

Which one?

A: Should questions dealing with legality be allowed?

Carl HI don't think there's one blanket answer. Question 1 has the potential for dubious answers, possibly including links to external websites that may not be what they claim to be. Question 2 is too broad, and could just as easily apply to tickets of any kind, not just music ones. Questions 3 a...

6:55 PM
On the other hand, regarding question 3:- google.co.uk/search?q=do+i+need+permission+to+remix+a+song
I think one problem with the questions at the moment is that there are a lot that might as well start with "Could somebody just Google this for me and post the answer below..... ?"

eh, it's not a big deal. The same thing happens on all SE sites. So long as the question is clear and on topic it's alright

it doesn't happen on the SE sites that I tend to use. But they are techy/nerdy ones about computing things. The questions are more like "How do I do...." or "I've got this problem, what can I do?". This site is not about solving problems. I think that's the difference.

@CarlH Yes - there is a big difference between tech sites and content sites such as here, Science Fiction, and Movie & TV.

GraphicDesign has a lot of them. They may get downvoted but if they're on topic, they're on topic
they're banned from StackOverflow because if they weren't they'd have even more questions, they already have too many

7:22 PM
Stack Overflow, etc, has answers posted by people that know what they are on about, which is why it is so successful. The answers to most of the questions on there are very easily verified (or not) by the person asking the question. That is not going to be the case with a site like this - some answers are immediately challenged for proof, source, etc, while other answers are posted without any reference to anything and get plenty of upvotes.
Needs to be some clarity as to what exactly is required for a 'good' answer.

@CarlH And that's one of my problems with allowing legal questions. You don't want wrong answers on legal questions, and their veracity is much harder to establish - as in impossible for someone who isn't an actual intellectual property lawyer.

7:52 PM
And an actual lawyer wouldn't give his advice for free. :)

1 hour later…
8:57 PM
@CarlH That's insulting to lawyers to assume that "an actual lawyer wouldn't give his advice for free".

I am wondering if I should post another Meta post that would be devoted to showing that some ID questions may have slipped into our mist, because they don't favour regular ID questions. Some are posted:

Q: What was the first track to be sold through Internet?

Franck DernoncourtI wonder what was the first track to be sold through Internet (and when / under what circumstances it took place).

Q: What is considered to be the first music video?

VixenJust as the title says. Who was the artist, what is the track called? Bonus points if the video is available online! I would say that silent film has the focus on the movie enhanced by the music. Looking for where the music is the centre and the video is enhancing it. (If this distinction makes...

Q: What was the first music recording reproduced for sale in any format?

topo mortoWhat was the first music recording that people could go to the shop and buy a copy of? Was it even a gramophone record, or was it some kind of wax cylinder recording?

I really have no problem with them yet, yet I think they may be off-topic if we as a community have voted against ID.
