hah same
hey I should eat or something

yeah I just did that
been putting it off in the hopees of making a 2PM build - that ain't happening
maybe 3

user15026
I should eat something that isn't popcorn or diet coke

do you mean diet coke
or do you mean diet orange tango or something
screw it I cba. takeaway it is.
some of saturday's overtime can pay for it

@AshleyNunn yes, this is a good idea.
BTW do you have tabletop simulator?
(just kidding)

user15026
@Ampt I do not, should I?

user15026
8:18 PM
@PreferenceBean yeah, diet actual coke. :p

If you enjoy board games: yes

@Ampt is it like Goat Simulator?

phsyics based: yes, but it also has a ton of tools to facilitate playing games like blindfold mechanics, built in voice chat, host abilities to lock things down, shuffling cards, dice, etc. It's a really neat little package.
I'm wondering how copyright owners will crack down on it
I'm hoping not at all, but we'll see.
I'm far more likely to buy a game to play with my RL friends if I can enjoy it for free online. Getting trusted recommendations on niche stuff like that can be hard.

I am grateful to be working remotely today.

user55340
@RobertHarvey why do people keep wondering how to write nuke power plant software?

8:31 PM
@MichaelT for all those homegrown nuclear reactors, duh.

Q: How is software for critical systems regulated in European Union?

PietrossI know that in US, FDA regulates SW for medical devices etc. But how is that in EU? What about SW for aviation, power plants, hospitals, medical devices, communication etc., I assume there have to be some regulations about development of these system to assure quality of some kind but I cannot fi...

Q: Why is question about critical embedded software for nuclear reactors on hold?

Josip IvicCritical embedded software for nuclear reactors This isn't career or educational advice. I just wanted to ask a qestion that I think is very interesting, and then it went on hold. Why?

8:47 PM
@MichaelT That's a good question.

Because how else will we decide what color the bikeshed should be?

The bikeshed is going to be fuschia. End of story.
4

user55340
That practical thing. When you have a real question about designing the software ask. Chances are you are under NDA then.

@Ixrec Fuschia is not going to work. It's a horrible, offensive color.

Our client made it very clear they want fuschia. Which means I don't have to take your objection seriously.

8:51 PM

not the best color

psr
@KitZ.Fox But you get to record story points.

I feel like I should flag that, in order to be consistent with the joke.

user55340
@RobertHarvey #define fuschia chartreuse

Q: Request: Only allow the poster to approve edits.

johny whyonly the poster who's being corrected should be able to approve an edit-- their name is on it, and it affects their reputation. If it's wrong, and they reject a correction, then the points and comments will reflect that.

8:53 PM
@RobertHarvey you must be new here.

Aww. More chapped hides.

how much grace should I give employer^ in terms of time to fix my W2 before calling in the IRS..

I would say until the week before w2's are required to be filed. Then call the IRS, explain your situation, and ask for an extension
everything I've heard about the IRS's customer service is that it's really good
you may not want to wait that long though

@enderland IRS says Feb 14th.

8:55 PM
@RobertHarvey yeah...

lol... aka today.

user55340
@enderland call payroll today. If they don't have a plan to fix, call irs tomorrow.

How long have you been trying to get it fixed?

1
Q: What is a reasonable amount of time to wait for a company to correct an incorrect W-2?

enderlandMy previous employer messed up my FSA in 2015 (see this question for more context if you are curious). I have noticed in filing taxes that my W-2 unfortunately is also incorrect, showing FSA contributions matching their mistake. This means it is showing I had a dependent care FSA contribution (a...

quit trying to game the HOQ list
:P

8:56 PM
@RobertHarvey 8 days now

user55340
Then call payroll back and give them the case number at the irs.

@Ampt that question is like 2 weeks old

fixed

@MichaelT it's not payroll's fault, it's our benefits people who screwed up - and they need to confirm to payroll that my benefits were what they actually were (and not the screwed up version they told payroll)

how bad of a code smell is having two $(document).ready blocks...

8:57 PM
A contact from the IRS would certainly get their attention.

I think that is a fast process but the benefits people laid everyone off are too busy

user55340
@enderland payroll/ accounting is the contact.

Q: Can you have multiple $(document).ready(function(){ ... }); sections?

leoraIf I have a lot of functions on startup do they all have to be under one single: $(document).ready(function() { or can I have multiple such statements?

@enderland Do you have it documented otherwise, like through pay stubs? The IRS helped me with something similar and having that information was really helpful.

@KitZ.Fox I think my paystubs are also inaccurate, they made the fix exclusively with my FSA provider I think

8:59 PM
I see.
Bummer.

the total FSA amount is right, but it's mostly in the wrong spot on payroll (and my W2)

@RobertHarvey I just consolidated them We'll see what happens.

psr
@enderland Simply call the IRS before April 1 and they will correct the mistake by furnishing you a child. If you do not wish to receive a child, simply fill out form 2222 - Request for Twins.

9:37 PM
heh.
I'm tempted to email the benefits people asking for confirmation so I don't have to call the IRS and complain about them not fixing my W 2

@psr I thought that was form N0SLP4U

10:02 PM
was about to comment on how gnat hadn't made it to this question yet, but then I realised he'd just forgotten the "recommended reading" prefix so I missed it
@Ampt I dunno ... depends really. The likelihood is that in your application you will have more than one, because each individual script is likely to have at least one. (Whether that in itself is wise is another question — in theory you can avoid it altogether in most cases by putting your code directly at the bottom of the file and allow it to be executed without any further delay, but we'll ignore that here.)
However, more than one in the same file? Unless each exists within a unit of code that could (/should??) be hived off into its own file, i.e. semantically distinct ...... meh, yeah, bit of a code smell I'd say.
But is it unusual? Doubtful.

Evening guys and gals. Any of you had a chance or are planing to watch Deadpool?

planning to, not yet

When are you going, Ixrec?

not planning to, not yet
nothing about any of the promotional material I've seen has me even the slightest bit interested, tbqh

not a clue, have other stuff to worry about atm

10:07 PM
I know lots of people gawping all over it but I think that's because they find swearing hilarious
plus, the same people thought The Force Awakens was amazing, so...

The Force Awakens was good

oh dear lord
SOMEBODY CALL AN AMBULANCE!!

hardly the best thing ever but fun

solid 3/10

I've yet to see or read anything with Deadpool but my exposure to the character thus far leads me to believe I'll enjoy his brand of humor (which I'm fairly sure is more than just swearing)

10:09 PM
I'd give it 5/10. It was good movie to chill to, but not the kind of a movie you'd want to see immediately again.

well from what I can tell it's swearing with a lot of genital-related jokes thrown in
not puerile and tedious at all
oh my god he made a joke about someone's bum! haw haw!!

if that really is all there is to it I will be disappointed

I don't want to spoil anything for Ixrec, needles to say, as a comedy movie, the movie was pretty entertaining.
But there's more to it. The story line from a time perspective is well defined. It's definitely a better movie than the new Star Wars.

Have any of the people rating it here read any of the deadpool comics?
Honest question - trying to gauge whether I'm aligned with you guys or not :)

in reality I'll probably have to watch it at some point
at the moment I'm on a Flash binge though and I have to say ... though it's no Supergirl, it's a lot more gripping because it has an overarching mystery and I really want to know X, Y, Z
I'm nine-ish episodes in and I'd already go mad over spoilers

10:12 PM
I've read like 3, Ampt. Not a huge fan of the genre itself, but I like the movies.

@Ampt I've never read any superhero comics, that's one rabbit hole I'll be putting off for quite a while

I'm actually kinda annoyed the first season is so long because it's going to take me at least another four days to get through it all to what I hope is a revelationary season finale

Flash is okay-ish.

the Arrow connection is a bit frustrating though because it looks like I should really have watched Arrow first - at least, for the first few seasons, then watched them in respective airing order simultaneously
and no way can I wait on Flash to catch up on Arrow now
plus I liked Smallville so I'm not sure I can deal with another Green Arrow just yet

user15026
@DavidPacker I saw it earlier today and thought it was great.

10:14 PM
I'm watching Breaking Bad at the moment. It's pretty good.
</understatement of the century>

that's still on my list. been putting it off for years. no idea why.

The arrow seasons where the story overlaps with Flash are pretty shitty anyway, @PreferenceBean.

it's not exactly a "fun" show, so there are legit reasons to put it off

just don't think I'll like it very much. which is what I said about The West Wing -- now my favourite show -- and Stargate SG-1 -- my favourite franchise sigh
@DavidPacker heh ok good thanks that helps
> Need an extension for Chrome or Mozzarella

The first two are good, the rest is garbage.
At least from my point of view. But I heard they might cancel it, because it's losing viewers.

10:15 PM
> Need an extension for Margherita called Pepperoni

@AshleyNunn It was not only about cussing, was it? :P

omg did they seriously rename Black Canary to White Canary
tell me there's a story reason for that
hmm so there's a Black Canary too, but the White Canary was based on Black Canary
what

And White Canary stars in the The Legends of Tomorrow, which seems do be an even bigger dissapointment than season 4 of Arrow :(.

oh dear
well it seems I have a lot of catching up to do
it's going to be a busy few weeks

I recently started watching Billions, though, starring, among others, brilliant Damian Lewis and it's an amazing series so far.

user55340
10:23 PM
@PreferenceBean the key thing to not needing those comments is getting a good question in the first place. Array with too many elements is a poor question. I don't want to have to write all that again in comments.

user55340

Q: Array data structure with too many elements

Scott ZhuHow would you design a data structure that is an array, but with so many elements such that the array almost fills up the entire RAM?

meanwhile, Agent Carter S2 is slow but steady and consistently entertaining.... and I'm finally looking forward to Cap 3
@MichaelT Ever noticed how no other site on the entire network seems to have those comments on almost every question?
And that they are still used suggests they don't really accomplish anything?
Granted, it's impossible to tell how many off-topic questions are not being posted :)

@PreferenceBean The rules seem a bit strict, but it teaches idiots like me how to ask.

The rules are strict on other SE sites too
just getting a bit fed up of the "recommended reading" on 99.99999999999% that's all
even I find it unwelcoming. Me!!!

user15026
@DavidPacker it does have a lot of crude humour and stuff in it but that doesn't bug me.

10:25 PM
because they're all first-time askers who've never seen those comments before and assume that any question about programming is on topic because that's the site name

hmm I think my laundry's done (again) - this time I will put it in the dryer rather than forgetting about it and letting it sit getting smelly for five hours....

the only way to stop first timers from posting off-topic or unanswerable stuff is to change the site name or make big changes to the Ask Question page

@Ixrec right and we're (quite rightly) back to that :P

why does even installing Java suck

I'll leave you to mull

10:26 PM
yup, you're the one who brought it up again =)

user55340
@PreferenceBean And we can't do either of those. Ask SE to change it.

this is why I never mention it in chat anymore
there is literally nothing to discuss; our current behavior already is the optimal behavior given our limited options

the "requesting install" brings you to a totally opaque java se development kit page with no explanation for which version to use when/why/how

@enderland The installer must check null before doing an operation on any object.

user55340
The best we can do is to politely explain to the user why this is a problem, what the issue with their question is, what they can do to fix it, and set the expectation that it will be closed so they aren't horrendously disappointed later.

10:27 PM
> $ java --version
No Java runtime present, requesting install.
takes me to that page. like, seriously?

Installing on Unix?

Q: How to install java 8 on Mac

user3763100I want to do some programming with the latest JavaFX, which requires Java 8. I'm using IntelliJ 13 CE and Mac OS X 9 Mavericks. A: How to install java 8 on Mac

l3xDon't rely on Oracle to install Java properly on your mac. Use HomeBrew. brew tap caskroom/cask brew install brew-cask If you get the error "already installed", follow the instructions to unlink it, then install again: brew unlink brew-cask brew install brew-cask And then finally: brew ca...

I'll blindly trust that link @MichaelT

user55340
@enderland oh, you think that link is bad? try the install for brew some time.

@MichaelT heh. brew documentation is... better than it used to be, but... it's still not that great

user55340
10:30 PM

user55340
Come on... you know you want to. Go download some code off the internet and run it through ruby.

user55340
That said, brew is great.

I totally needed another reason not to fiddle with Java

brew is so much better now than when I last really used it 5 years ago

I should run it as root

10:31 PM
everything was b0rken then

@MichaelT I know you can't. It's bizarre to me that there's obviously a problem and they won't let you make the obvious fix.
But then that's SE all over, isn't it

that would appear to be the case

no we're the problem, not the name. haven't you heard?

I see it daily ;)
you should just quit your job
only solution
wait wrong site

yeah, if it wasn't for that stupid job I wouldn't keep forgetting to spend all 24 of my close votes

10:33 PM
I already quit 1 job a month ago

IRTA moth for some reason

wow sweet now the brew install seems to have frozen my terminal

see I told you you should have run it as root
let's just take a little stroll down memory lane shall we

lolol

10:35 PM
we're moving up in the world!

what

repro on Win7
java -h works. every other typical combination I tried does not.

I love that --version kills java, instead of -version. really!? lol

apparently it's java -version

like... you are one of the most well used things and you totally implode on --version instead of -version.

10:36 PM
which oracle came up with that one

but java --version without java installed works fine and says "we need a JRE!"

that's almost as dumb as Jimmy
no offence Jimmy

user55340
@PreferenceBean That was sun, not oracle. There are many things that oracle can't do or unbreak because of sun. Like those advertisements? Yea... that was sun getting in a 10 year contract for "install yahoo task bar!" as they were trying to find money.

@MichaelT whoosh

today I learned: avoid using Java from the command line

10:38 PM
I wish I were drunk

today you also learned: using Java from command line is easier than the installer
thus, TYL: don't use java
+1 for pointing that. Insane. Can't create Java Virtual Machine because you typed a wrong command/argument. — Raf Sep 1 '14 at 16:12

A: Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine Mac OSX Mavericks

Amaresh HDif you done with java -version command, even though problem can not solved means ,u might installed many java versions like JDK 1.8 or Jdk 1.7. so uninstall all other versions other than u need. and set path variable for that means ur done.

top notch

psr
@PreferenceBean Your highest rating.

@psr Nah. Ask me about Oblivion and Gravity

speaking of hating on brew, it runs make (but not make -j7 or anything like that). :'(

10:41 PM
there was another film I adored but I've forgotten what it was now. go figure
oh, Iron Man 3 gets a conservative 8.5/10 from me

as a kid I really loved Wind in the Willows

Interstellar probably 9

Casablanca and Citizen Kane were also damn good
oh yeah I saw Interstellar just the other day, I really liked that

Spectre 7, Rogue Nation 7, Lucy 8, Genisys 6.5 ... see I can like things

though now I look extra silly for having still not seen The Martian somehow

10:42 PM
Martian gets cautious 8 .... clever but somehow I wasn't entirely satisfied
and in the category of low-key movies that you have to think about and will enjoy as long as you didn't expect to be blown away by action and development... Another Earth, Age of Adaline, both high rated too
so you see, I really didn't like TFA

which is seeming stranger by the minute

I read the book for The Martian, so I'm sure hte movie will be a letdown

what's a... "book"?

I think all I've done today is a net of upgrading a single version on my machine from 0.0.73 to 1.0.0

10:51 PM
@Ixrec lolol
@enderland to be fair that could be like 20 major versions' worth of upgrading. good job!

yeah we'll go with that

I love how the manual for the book is just a smaller book the guy also can't open
@enderland but do your unit tests still pass?

@Ixrec I don't have any tests affected by this, I'm trying to run a test which required this update :s

nice

lol. my team released today too so I had to update to that, too, lol. it took me long enough to update my other version that I was too slow on the next version :(

11:00 PM
tomorrow: figure out how to make Jenkins jobs that can do these updates for me

eh, its more initial system config
enderland is only on day 11

tomorrow: save this initial config to a VM so I can skip the first day of nonsense on my next greenfield project

@Ixrec well this is no hospital, and TJ is noooo Doctor.
