@durron597 "Seattle Pretend We Play Tennis" club. Might as well make it pretend polo, really.

Maybe I should make my own, but it would turn out to be more like a WeWork.

@psr pretend polo is awesome, I frequently pretend to be riding a horse around my office hitting things with pretend sticks and yelling in a british accent

@JimmyHoffa that doesn't help me want to stick with this current setup, let's just say, I really, really like my dual monitor setup right now

A WeWork with a top-shelf liquor cabinet.

@enderland haha yeah, going down to one monitor and having people crowded about every day would be... gah, it's like people don't realize coders are expensive, space isn't
(especially where you live - space is bloody cheap there)

8:03 PM
@JimmyHoffa the perk would be I could work from home pretty often

@JimmyHoffa: Cornerstone onDemand in Santa Monica claimed they were hiring 400 to 500 software engineers in the next year.

psr
@enderland Near Los Angeles they could have some pretty fantastic open offices - just a patch of desert sand, no walls no roof. Let the collaboration begin! Maybe call it "burning monitor".

photoshopped

@LightnessRacesinOrbit What are you doing in here? Didn't they lock you up in the Monopoly jail in The Lounge? :P

user114359
@RobertHarvey Too bad I am out of CVs for today

8:10 PM
also, wow, I've seen that before and didn't think it looked strange in any way. so that goes to show how much our UI has changed since and how used to it I am now

I can tell because of the way it looks
also rep values 1234 and 4321.

@RobertHarvey no I won the Community Chest and escaped!

why would people photoshop things when they could easily just edit the page and take a "real" screenshot

I'm here because these lovely folks have been helping me get to grips with Docker

Awesome.

user114359
8:10 PM
@LightnessRacesinOrbit clearly not talking about me, I am the antithesis of "lovely"

user114359
"whiskey-addled, lazy, good-for-nothing, scumbag" is more accurate when describing me

Here's how it works:

Anybody can ask a question
Anybody can answer
The best answers are voted up and rise to the top

psr
@Snowman But a lovely whiskey-addled, lazy, good-for-nothing, scumbag.

user114359
And I do mean "whiskey" not "scotch"

8:12 PM
I wonder if I should comment on an internal discussion post about how our IT detects "unauthorized software" with a list of ways you can get around it if you "need" to... :-)

user114359
@psr that is like saying I am the most charming bum you passed on the way in to work this morning.

@enderland "Just" make "sure" your "comment" is in "scare quotes."

user114359
@enderland such things should be disseminated via word of mouth only. I should know, I've done that a few times.

@Snowman yeah. heh. it's really easy, too, which is amusing, though I guess most people who will know that are likely to not install viruses
or other stuff

My own brash assertion (though a professor might have drilled it into me): scare quotes are put around words you wouldn't use. If you wouldn't use words, don't use them. Hence you should never use scare quotes.

8:16 PM
hah

@AaronHall You keep using "that word." I don't think it means what you think it means.

Mandy Patinkin did not do air quotes when he said that.

user114359
@AaronHall Inconceivable!

double futurama whammy:
@RonMaupin while that is technically correct (the best kind of correct) I'm sure you can appreciate that most people don't think of the word "forum" that way. So, if you're looking to communicate clearly (the best kind of communication) then you might want to sacrifice correctness for clarity. — MetaFight 1 min ago

@MohitC in some languages, nested functions are legal, so if a function is only ever used by one function, it might be better to just nest it instead. But I agree on your first statement, this probably belongs on Programmers or something. — user2085282 38 secs ago

You seem a decent fellow, I hate to kill you.

@AaronHall Welcome to the Whiteboard. We suffer from no such compulsions.

Q: Documenting who a function is called by

kjschirooIs it bad style to use a comment above a function to document who calls a function? As an example: # Called by foo def bar(something): return something+1 It strikes me as bad practice, but I would like to check myself before going around telling others not to do it.

user114359
Ah, looks like the asker self-deleted.

user114359
Too bad someone chimed in and gave bad advice (cross-posting) and the user had to go through with that. The asker is clearly not very active and probably doesn't know any better.

The more successful the site, the more "here comes everybody," the more crap - the more cleanup.

user114359
@AaronHall True, because as every web site that ever existed has proved, users will not RTFM before posting anything.

Yep.

Q: Numbers with multiple runs of ones

MichaelTTask Find the set of numbers such that the binary representation contains two or more runs of 1 separated by at least one 0. For example, the for the numbers that are 4 bits long: 0 0000 (no ones) 1 0001 (only one run) 2 0010 (only one run) 3 0011 (only one run)...

user55340
Apparently had the wrong sequence because of a typo there on the recursion question.

user55340
@Snowman not sure why you are saving to a list given the "just print it" thing and it's ordered.

user114359
@MichaelT I wonder if there is a sequence for that. Essentially, any number that is a sum containing 2^n and 2^(n+2) as addends

user114359
@MichaelT I guess I wasn't unclear, but you did say "your choice" in terms of output

user55340
9:13 PM
Return delimited works fine.

user114359
@MichaelT that saves a bit of space. 165, not bad for a verbose language.

user55340
Not at all bad.

user55340
9:33 PM
Wait, actually the regex /01/ works just as well. If there's a 01, there must be a 1 to the left somewhere. — histocrat 6 mins ago

user55340
@Snowman ^^

user114359
@MichaelT I saw, I shaved some space off in the regex and in the power function. Duh, I should have used a simple bit shift!

user55340
Hmm. Idea for esolang - convert number to base n. Then code state table somehow. If accepted, print number.

user114359
@MichaelT I'm writing up another solution in C++. Do you know off the top of your head if it counts if I use a VC++ extension and document it in the answer?

user114359
Apparently ltoa() is MS-specific

user55340
9:49 PM
Dunno the rules errata there.

user114359
I think as long as the answer specifies any non-standard features used it is okay but I would have to dig up the meta post.

user114359
As long as said feature is part of a compiler or other runtime environment and not some "hidden code" you wrote and are not counting for size.

user55340
Heh. Look at the morning crescent esolang.

user114359
Somehow, the Java solution is shorter than the C++ solution. I blame namespaces and #include for most of that.

user55340
Is it better to do regex? Or bit walking in c++?

user55340
Xor adjacent bits.

user55340
Look at matlab solution.

user114359
10:25 PM
I am not sure that bit walking will be more concise in C++

user114359
@MichaelT You made the HNQ list!

user55340
11:09 PM
@Snowman A good CodeGolf question can frequently do so. Challenging enough that it isn't "CJam: 6" (see the electron orbitals), but easy enough that people can pick any language and do it.

user55340
@Snowman You know, you need to do the code golf challenge in JQuery now. Just for fun.

user114359
@MichaelT jQuery really isn't bad when used for its intended purpose. This is not its intended purpose.

Q: Energy levels of electrons
