I kind of understand why R would use recycling, but do programmers use recycling? I feel that Recycling exits more due to a loophole in R that it cannot fix, and it provides no benefit to the developers who write software using R. Is my understanding correct? — sgowd 21 secs ago

Any question of what the Standard means would revolve around the question of what it means for an object's stored value to be accessed "by" an lvalue expression. If one interprets N1570 6.5p7 literally, it would require programmers to jump through hoops to do much of anything, since neither an assignment expression nor a declaration containing an initializer is an lvalue expression. — supercat 24 secs ago

@ArpitJain Questions about Azure, Azure DevOps, and other Azure services are perfectly on-topic for Stack Overflow. Look at the help center. Questions about programming and tools used by programmers are on-topic. I'd say this question is off-topic because it's a support issue that isn't a good fit for Stack Overflow's Q&A format, but your statement that Stack Overflow is only for programming related questions is not accurate. — Daniel Mann 47 secs ago

Scrolling questions on SO can be a strong deterrent for people (like me) to read. I think in general programmers on SO understand two things well: (1) if somebody repeats code more than twice, generalize it; (2) if you say "I show 2-3 here but really there are dozens", we will honor your intent and generalize it. You need people to at least look at your code, but I'm not even going to look at it when it's this long. It's daunting! :-) (Further, you already have a close-vote ... it only takes 3 votes to close a question, don't give other readers an excuse to demand better clarity. Thanks!) — r2evans 1 min ago

There are certainly scenarios where dummy parameters are useful, like in lambdas in map or fold operations, or when implementing an interface. But for the mere sake of creating an overload, no, I beg to disagree. There's no need and it's noise that programmers can live without. — Abel 49 secs ago

Fair enough. I don't know, genuinely. I interact a lot with non-programmers who have no idea about loops. Conversely, the readership on SO should be programmers and a programmer competent in even one language should certainly know about loops. Oddly, for all its differences the theme "there are often methods better than a loop" is common in R discussions I see, just as Stata users often have to be talked out of looping over observations. — Nick Cox 33 secs ago

@eyllanesc, no! For most of my problems I didn't even have to ask any question. I found many answers here on this site and in plenty of cases I've observed people asking a single-line question and experienced programmers posted tons of answer explaining the matters with tons of examples, that's why I like stackoverflow.com. — Emon Haque 22 secs ago

Another way of putting what @epascarello is saying is, debug your code. Set breakpoints in document.ready, in window.onload, before the ajax call, in the success function of the ajax call, etc. Read the documentation of the service; does it mention a 10 second delay? Or any delay? These are the steps professional programmers take. Trying work around after work around, making users wait 10 seconds for their pages to load, these are not what professional programmers do unless forced to. — Heretic Monkey 50 secs ago

vector is at it's absolute best when you allow it to directly contain data. Pointers to data slow things down with an extra pointer chase and non-contiguous data often wrecks caching. Plus because you're dynamically allocating the linked lists you now have to manage the destruction logic manually. A general rule of thumb in modern C++ is to avoid using new. — user4581301 34 secs ago

It will save a lot more than 30 seconds of each viewer’s cognitive time. And, if you read Stack Overflow for a while, you’ll find many many questions where the same request is made of other posters. And, it’s a good thing to practice doing, because professional software engineers are required to write code that their co-workers, both current and future, can understand. But you are certainly under no obligation to do anything; just be aware that if you can’t be bothered to help us, we may not feel obligated to help you. — VGR 57 secs ago

@VE7JRO I fully agree that it is a useful lesson for Arduino programmers, and in some of my answers I also try to give tips how to improve programming, but this question on itself is not related in any way to Arduino. It would be if some specific Arduino calls, classes, functions or functionality would be used. — Michel Keijzers 10 secs ago
