Q: Give a Root owned folder web read and write access

jasondavisI have an Ubuntu server for a client I am working on, doing development work. I have root access and they created a new vhost blog.domain.com so when I log into it with WinSCP it list the files and there owners are Root user. So now my PHP scripts are not able to write or do anything, what can ...

anyone see my latest question? I have 2 processes that are taking up 98 percent CPU according to the top output. Both of my websites are not responding (it just shows it loading in chrome and other browsers). And I am wondering if the two are connected. I am afraid to kill those processes, because I have other services on my server such as a socket server and sms server. Could something taking 98 percent CPU cause a web page not to load?
@Seth i'll put iton my list to try ot dfo and see on that question

@mateo that is a social network!

@NathanOsman Really is different for those people :)

@Lucio Lets see how this works! is like I don't know if this is going to work, but we wil see
Let see how does this works! isn't really a proper sentence.
@Seth agree
02:05
You could say Lets see; how does this work?
@mateo confusing, isn't? :D
@Seth ahhh
right
Although I don't think that would be too common.
see... this does work, yes?
yoda style.
@mateo that is wrong
haha
I saw yoda very enough in this room. What does it mean?
Yoda is a character in the Star Wars universe, first appearing in the 1980 film Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. In the original films, he trains Luke Skywalker to fight against the evil Galactic Empire. In the prequel films, he serves as Grand Master of the Jedi Council and as a general in the Clone Wars. In 2007, Yoda was selected by Empire magazine as the 25th greatest movie character of all time. On their list of the 100 Greatest Fictional Characters, Fandomania.com ranked Yoda at number 60. Jai
woow may I know whats going on with forums here ?@Takkat @fossfreedom & Hi
I can only assume canonical are pushing AU as first point of call for Q&A type stuff. Probably would clutter up the global menu with yet another "get help" area. Dunno really - non the wiser who decides this sort of thing.
&Hi back - forums should be more prominent for people who want to discuss rather than ask..
This may also improve the questions quality here (which did drop recently).
Jai

08:30
@Takkat well I agree with you. Forums are good If you want to say something & If you would like to write something for Ubuntu like suggestions and all , forums are good point. Ask Ubuntu is like Question & Answer basis.
the space between the global menu and the main section just doesnt look correct IMHO. Dots are bugging me as well.
New design from the site is so awesome! Love it
2
@BrunoPereira love - maybe - this will need to grow on me.
@fossfreedom bah, its so nice and clean, what is missing? Love the top bar on the site and merged style with the rest of the Ubuntu sites.
space and dots ... small things makes the site stand apart rather than integrated.
08:40
details... life is not about them ;)
08:59
thats pretty damned cool
09:37
Holy topbar-batman!
I like that new bar thingy, however it doesn't look quite right with the bottom margin in my opinion.
Here's what I mean in pictures.
Current setup:
Without bottom margin:
I don't know, it kinda looks out of place.
@OctavianDamiean yep - fully agree with you. Apparently @Jin says that canonical agreed to this design. strange decision IMHO - there is a meta on this. Suggest add your thoughts there.
I think the new design is Awesome, but I wish that the code sample is a little darker.
if I was any good with greasemonkey scripts (which I'm not) - I'm sure it would be possible to adjust the CSS to fix this sort of stuff.
09:55
@fossfreedom It is fairly easy. I have an example script on my GitHub profile, it should be useful for you to get the boilerplate script injection part done.
The CSS part is merely a matter of selecting the right element and then setting the appropriate style property to what you want it to.

A: Upcoming site design changes

Octavian DamieanSo, I just wanted to drop by and leave some feedback on the new topbar design. First of all, thanks for the addition, it is quite handy however there is also something that's bugging me about it. The bottom margin of the new topbar makes the entire design look out of place. My suggestion would ...

11:03
@-moz-document domain(askubuntu.com)
{
code, pre { font-family: monospace !important; color: purple !important }
}
works for me in Stylish (or in userContent.css (Firefox) or in Custom.css in Chrom*).
what does that do?
You could throw in "font-weight: bold !important" for a bold effect. @fossfreedom that would make the code sample Mitch wanted more distinctive. I forgot to @ for Mitch :(
give me a way to remove the space and dots and you'll make me and quite a few others very happy ;)
11:19
For the main askubuntu.com site, blocking "http://cdn.sstatic.net/askubuntu/img/bg-site.png" kills the dots.
2
that deserves a star - makes the site so much better. cheers!
@fossfreedom, I could add it to Meta if there were a question like "How have you personalized Ask Ubuntu's appearance after the site redesign?" That could be catch-all type of question.
Remember - rules on Meta are much looser than on the main site. I see no reason why your tip and Gilles answer are not valid here - meta.askubuntu.com/questions/6788/upcoming-site-design-changes
Will do.
Added "For the meta site, block http://cdn.sstatic.net/askubuntumeta/img/bg-site.png."
11:39
needed a picture - feel free to substitute mine with yours if you want :)
No! I have a horrible time with uploading stuff :)
@fossfreedom, could you please delete or modify my post here: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/9773407#9773407 ? What I wrote there isn't what is needed to block the dots on Ask Ubuntu..

like fedora and stuff or just the unofficial ubuntu derivative guys?
Oli
Oli
@fossfreedom Both really, but I've just noticed somebody talking about a rpm in a question I started off assuming was about Ubuntu. I mean, for most things it doesn't make a tiny bit of difference, it's just funny that we're bubbling to the top of everybody's first-line support list.
:) unix & linux SE probably wont like that
12:23
Hi
My Skype doesnt connect
a login problem
what can i do?
@OctavianDamiean I think it's because they wanted to separate the Ubuntu branding and the Stack Exchange branding. Two global bars vying for attention
@Sadodah askubuntu.com/questions/252335/skype-login-problem ? or just remove the .Skype folder and re-login again
13:02
@fossfreedom, you had asked about the space between the global menu and the main section. You can tweak it with:#custom-header {
display: block;
margin-bottom: 2px;
} (I've used 2px here but the default was 22px.) The smaller the value for "margin-bottom", the less the space between the global menu and main section.

Does anyone here know how to do the following in the Compiz config Settings Manager: "Beneath the “Effects” heading, click Window Decoration. In the Command input field, enter the window decorator you prefer (emerald if you installed that, xfwm4 if not)."
16:52
link?
you need to install the package first. do you have it?
i have the following command in that textbox: /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator
I didn't install emerald, but xfwm4 is supposed to be pre-loaded on xubuntu
where exactly are you lost? that link has screenshots to guide you even.
sorry about the delay, I hit "restore default" for the command textbox and all my windows disappeared. Only the cursor remained so I restarted
It nown says: /usr/bin/compiz-decorator in that line
I'm not sure what to put in the command box to activate xfwm4
16:59
what do you get for whereis xfwm4?
doesn't seem to do anything
like nothing?
$ whereis gtk-window-decorator
gtk-window-decorator: /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator /usr/bin/X11/gtk-window-decorator /usr/share/man/man1/gtk-window-decorator.1.gz
should I use window decorator?
*location?
whatever you get for xfwm4, use that.
how can I find the location of xfwm4?
17:02
if you don't have it installed, it wont show you anything.
@JoeHobbit whereis xfwm4
use that command
in terminal?
xfwm4: /usr/bin/xfwm4 /usr/bin/X11/xfwm4 /usr/share/xfwm4 /usr/share/man/man1/xfwm4.1.gz
applying
ok I did that and nothing happened, I realize I'm supposed to "activate" compiz with Alt+F2 and then "compiz --replace" but when I do that it just messes up my windows: prevents resizing them and takes away certain features like min and maximize for some of the windows.
try logging out and back in
brb
ok the windows are back to normal
but the "desktop cube is still absent
should I install "emerald"?
17:07
no idea
the guide reccomends emerald
but it doesn't explain how to install emerald
i dont know what is emerald. shrug
it is an alternative to xfwm4
emerald is the thing that manages compiz window decorations, I think it is old
back before it became compiz fuzion
17:10
that's one danger of using a guide from 2007. absolutely outdated info
good poing
point
they removed it, but ubuntuportal.com/2012/06/…
thanks mate
@JoeHobbit I'm not sure it will get you desktop cube... it just changes the decorations on the windows.
hmmm I just now google searched "Xubuntu desktop cube 2013" looking for a more recent guide and found this:
End of desktop cube using compiz?
Till Xubuntu Precise, I have successfully created desktop cube/sphere/cylinders using compiz in Xubuntu. However, the compiz settings manager that I downloaded from the repo, didn't have the desktop cube & rotate cube plugins. Sad, that such a wonderful eye-catching effect now no longer can be created using compiz (KDE offers though!). Further, compiz fusion plugin would crash whenever I try to start it.
17:14
the cube's been unmaintained for a long time
you'll probably have a hard time finding up to date stuff on it
To Xubuntu 12.04 users: continue using Xubuntu Precise and enjoy your desktop cube. Unless you are really bored of the bland looks (check my article on Linux customization!) and think 2015 is too far away, there is no point to upgrade!
To Xubuntu 12.10 users: it doesn't matter! There is hardly anything to differentiate! If you like to have the latest Linux kernel, upgrade!
is there another way to make awsome desktop effects?
is there another way to make awesome desktop effects?
which version are you on?

oh, maybe this will work

19:01
Also: meta /helpcenter now redirects to main /helpcenter ... I don't think I like that.
There's a big difference between meta and main - and we just lost that info almost entirely.
The info itself is still there, but the split isn't as apparent anymore. That could become a big problem.
about the top/navigation bar: when you select any link from "more" you completely leave the "top bar" area - means you are off AU entirely.
