18:00
@katyasehgal The original problem is a bad drive. It probably needs a replacement, I'm afraid.
True story. Though I'm confused all day what that might mean..
@Takkat tree would mean structure, which preserves orignal things.
@katyasehgal yeah that.
@Takkat oh. sectors can't be solved or disk reformatted and all?
18:01
@katyasehgal Thing is we don't really know what is broken and what not. This may make your system pretty unstable.
:P BBT
@Takkat as such replacement only solution?
@Mahesh I see FADE in the list of UTT animations \o/ :) great!!!
@katyasehgal it is.
@Takkat wait was it added recently? coz if it was, I missed reading that commit diff. :P
18:03
hallo
@Mahesh I had an update coming in today and took a look.
Oh. must be due to the guy who proposed a SRU.
he did all the paperwork for us and cherrypicked a couple commits that prevent crashes.
'guy'? He's Andrew.
oh @jokerdino you are here....
18:06
@Takkat Thank you Takkat. I guess a new drive will be expensive. Will consider options. Till then whatdo you advise.... use system but not store information?
The crash in my shot does not come from UTT!
@Takkat fade was there since the last version.
@Mahesh so, is it 'tonight'?
:| sorry..
@jokerdino I may have missed it then. It was not on the vanilla Saucy I installed right after it came out. But now it is :)
@Mahesh It wasn't a dream
18:08
@katyasehgal Backup more often than regularly
@Takkat Hah I don't know. I don't use that option.
@MarcoCeppi O_O
@Takkat do i need another backup after this if I am not saving anything to the drive now?
@Mahesh is it time yet? ..
@jokerdino I need that option because my VM plays catch the snail with me otherwise.
18:10
@jokerdino yes. and stuff is done. I just need to do some finishing touches.
@katyasehgal deja dup will make incremental backups, hopefully. But as soon as you add mp3 or video they are not in a safe place.
@Mahesh okay. let me know
BRB
also, we should stop messing with master.
@Takkat okay

also, how do I use update manager till then?
18:11
@jokerdino by any slim chance, do I know andrewsomething?
@Mahesh maybe not you. I do.
@jokerdino what do you propose?
@jokerdino oh, okay. :P
@Mahesh master/stable/testing/unstable/experimental-topic branches
@jokerdino cool.
18:12
@Takkat @jokerdino I am certain that the update stopped this time owing to internet disruption. Is there not a away where i can delete/uninstall partially dependent update and then download and install it again?
@katyasehgal if the download stopped midway, it stopped. next time you update, it resumes.
btw #43 @jokerdino
BBL. feeling damn sleepy
@Mahesh night
okay.
i understand that download stops and resumes. And that bad sectors coming in the way. But is there a way we can undo the latest install and reinstall it to check?
just do what you were doing.
@jokerdino As in?
18:19
apt-get -f install
anil@anil-Inspiron-1420:~$ apt-get -f install
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
anil@anil-Inspiron-1420:~$ sudo apt-get -f install

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
libqtscript4-webkit libqtscript4-qtbindings libqtscript4-phonon
so is there a way to remove and purge the latest install and then redo it... I am just hoping against hope :)
you could try removing older kernels.
@jokerdino you had mentioned this the last time.
how do I do it?
apt-get remove linux-header [tab]
and remove anything less than 30 or something
ok, my net will be off for 10 mins [some policy]
I will follow what you wrote.
But can we deal with this?
"The following NEW packages will be installed:
linux-headers-3.2.0-43 "
obviously these were downloaded to be installed.
18:24
yep
it can't install because of lack of space.
so even if my internet had worked perfectly, the same problem would have occurred?
yeah i think so
apt-get remove linux-header [tab] gave me a very long list ... and could not locate package linux-header
hm, [tab] means you should press tab
i get only a dash
18:27
go for it
in case net stops, ill be back in 10-15 mins
doing it
tab again
type 3 after dash
anil@anil-Inspiron-1420:~$ sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-
linux-headers-3.2.0-23 linux-headers-3.2.0-35-generic-pae
linux-headers-3.2.0-23-generic-pae linux-headers-3.2.0-36

linux-headers-3.2.0-30-generic-pae linux-headers-3.2.0-38
linux-headers-3.2.0-31 linux-headers-3.2.0-38-generic-pae
you can remove a lot of them.
those are the package's name.
sudo apt-get remove <package name>
pretty much remove all the ones below 35
Result same...

anil@anil-Inspiron-1420:~$ sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.2.0-23

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
linux-headers-3.2.0-23-generic-pae : Depends: linux-headers-3.2.0-23 but it is not going to be installed
linux-headers-3.2.0-43-generic-pae : Depends: linux-headers-3.2.0-43 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
18:43
oh dear. it's a catch
dpkg -r <package>
like dpkg -r linux-headers-3.2.0-23 ?
...

anil@anil-Inspiron-1420:~$ sudo dpkg -r linux-headers-3.2.0-23

remove the generic-pae then

anil@anil-Inspiron-1420:~$
shall I do the same till 34?
hm, yeah
may the goodness juice be with you.
goodness juice?
good luck.
done till 34. can i also remove the latest installs and retry???
I want to be able to update my ubuntu.
18:51
what's the latest installs?
the one that got disrupted, the one that needs dependencies.
anil@anil-Inspiron-1420:~$ apt-get -f install

err, try this now sudo dpkg -r linux-headers-3.2.0-23

I missed the 2nd command

@jokerdino we had a holiday this monday :=D

err, i meant apt-get -f install

so how come it worked now?
@katyasehgal you might regret saying that ;)
@katyasehgal jokerdino eats cows for lunch :X
and you are yet to explain the anil vs katya.
haha
will this happen again... space and all?
@jokerdino I thought you are so busy you will forget
19:03
@katyasehgal it might happen.
@katyasehgal haha. I noted it in my diary deep down
@katyasehgal but then you know it is solvable and you know how to solve it too
can I save these steps somehow?
this conversation?
yeah.

great name! checking it
so solution is to always remove old kernels and then retry
seems like it
until a new drive.
:|
@jokerdino thank you so much.
19:08
thank you
ya, thank me. Good students make good teachers :D
You got it too right. lol
@jokerdino salute.
@jokerdino: Do you have an Android phone?
@NathanOsman I did.
I can get it back from my sister. What up?
19:10

@jokerdino: The 2buntu app is ready for testing.
Oh nice.
I'll get to testing it tomorrow-ish.
back - and missed it all.
19:19
missed what?
The rescue of @katyasehgal's computer.
20:10
Hi @mojo706!
So.. There was a command line way of creating notify-osd style notifications..
Does anyone know what it is?
Thanks!

Q: How can I send a custom desktop notification?

JanuaryI have a custom script and I want to send a desktop notification (the one that appears in the top right corner of the screen) with a custom message. How do I do that?

^Better
Nothing happens when I do that though... I know it used to work.
on 12.10..
nothing is too few
20:15
Hm?
That was what I had used before though. +1 for you :D
It works on 13.10
Hmm.
Let me log out and log back in.
this is always a last resort
just before reboot and reinstall.
Nope. That didn't do it.
@Takkat What is?
Do you get any errors
20:21
No..
silence in terminal is eerie
Yeah... It acts like it worked.
Let me go remove some packages.
I have a mess of gnome fallback, KDE and Cinnamon lying around.
This mess is hard to get resolved from purging things.
Sure, but I've noticed my volume notifications have become gnome-ish recently.
I figured that might have something to do with this.
Theme-less notifications may be invisible.
Wasn't there some hax to theme the bubbles?
20:25
Hmm. How could that happen?
@Takkat I never saw any.. But there probably were.
I cant remember too
Gotta be careful when removing packages with the word "gnome" ;)
I once removed online accounts when I was trying to purge gnome shell.
no only then... unfortunately.
Because it was called gnome something or other.
<-- still has 50% of KDE on one of my boxes.
Now the upgrades take longer there.
20:28
Hmm. Do I need gnome-session?
Not if you're not on GNOME but you are. So yes, you need it.
I'm not on Gnome itself.
I'm using Unity, though that depends on some Gnome stuff.
Unity is GNOME3 + better user experience.
(IMO better because we need fewer user actions to get where we want.)
Errg. Still not quite gone.
oh gosh notify has many rdepends.... O.o
^^did you see this typo? It's these what make my life so hard. How can any human being spot nofity in a code....
20:36
sigh
Its so hard to remove everything a meta package installs..
Most of the time there is not really an urgent need to purge things. I mostly leave them.
Well when they're overwriting your defaults...
They will not be restored from purging.
Oh?
They may be removed with purging, but not if they are used by another app.
Try if your guest account can send bubbles. Then its "only" a setting in your /home
20:39
KK
But settings in /home are never touched by a purge.
Nope.
No bubbles.
aargh.
That's what my volume notifications look like now..
Gnome style.
My daskeyboard has no media keys.
20:42
Oh.. Don't you know what the default looks like though?
Never saw them. Wait - my Bluetooth headset sometimes does that.
Well I'll finish removing garbage and get back to you.
I know you don't think that will help.
Be very extremely careful when purging! Better dont purge.
I will ;-)
You're a good mentor @Takkat.
No I only made some very bad experiences in the past.
A wonder I still stick to Ubuntu
20:46
I'm not sure I quite understand..
I was saying you're quite good at helping people.
Thank you - but sometimes being too careful is bad. It does not help you learning the hard way ;)
Which is the best way.
I guess it is.. I'm not prepared for a reinstall right at the moment though :P
Hm. Unity or Gnome?
Your icons are better than mine.
GNOME fallback 12.04 but its the same with Unity.
20:50
Weird. That's not what Unity is supposed to look like.
If anything is ugly then this.
Must have to do with Gnome fallback.. like I said ;)
Never saw anything better - it may be a Bluez thing however.
Well if I ever get the default back I'll show you :)
Just checked it: no such icon with Bluez on saucy. Hmm.
But it recognized my headset.
20:56
There we go!
\o/
\o/
Though I lost by desktop background now XD
What did you purge?
Anyway, that's what the the volume notifications are supposed to look like.
@Takkat A bunch of KDE stuff, and then I ran sudo apt-get install --reinstall notify-osd
I think that's what did it.
there is no notify-send package...
20:58
notify-osd not notify-send.
That's why I did not find it send == osd
why?
install osd if you want to send.
osd was already installed.
It comes by default.
it does. But you needed to --reinstall it.
Right.
To place it on top of the Gnome notifications.
aaargh - my app segfaults when running in saucy.
21:01
Remember, I said that the volume notifications were Gnome styled after I installed gnome-session-fallback?
yeah you said so.
Reinstalling notify-osd put itself back as default. At least that's my theory.
@Takkat :/
I hope it's because of VirtualBox. At least it was in 13.04.
> line 3: 2983 Segmentation fault
Not that I wanted to know more...
21:15
@FEichinger I do understand now

Q: Why did my reputation decrease 20 points with a 'User was removed' summary?

LucioYou can see in the next picture that my reputation has decreased 20 points, and the summary says "User was removed". I cannot understand nothing of what happened here. Can someone explain to me what just happened?

Q: Why does SE mess with the spacing in CODE BLOCKS?

Yet Another UserWhy do code blocks delete double-spaces? Double-spaces are required in some code. Code blocks should not alter the text in them at all, because code sometimes has weird formatting. Example: compare the source of this to the rendered version: sudo apt-get remove $(dpkg -l|egrep '^ii linux-(im|...

Q: Over use of "My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?"

coteyrIs anyone else seeing an over use of My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?? Half of the close reviews I see are close, duplicate of that question. That normally wouldn't be so bad, except at least half of those are only loosely related to the "parent" question. ...
