If I had a few million rep for every question I nearly asked, I'd have at least a few million rep.

Sometimes taking the time to put your question into words allows you to think of it in a different way - I've often finished writing a question on Stack Overflow only to suddenly be struck with the solution before clicking "submit".

@NathanOsman Yeah, most of my question-writing on SO ends in me realising I've made a huge mistake or I figure out the problem.
Usually comes when I'm para-quoting my code for public consumption. My comments would probably get me banned.
People say that swearing is lazy and unimaginative but if they saw some of my longer blockcomment rants about other people's programming mid-code, they'd see I've got plenty of imagination.
 
On the other hand - following through and asking the question and immediately answering it opens up the possibility of helping others in the future.
(Provided that the question isn't too localized or something.)
