Also if someone wants a link for a cheap-ish reasonable capacity SSD ping me. Some idiot flagged a chat message with a tiger link and got it approved last time I posted a link directly. Sadly face your accusers doesn't happen on stackchat.
I'm new to Ubuntu - to be honest this is my very first day trying it... and I've already spent hours trying to make my wired connection work.
I've been using this wired network with Windows and OSX, and in both systems I also had some trouble trying to connect in the past (and the troubleshooter...
Hay, everyone. I have an old PowerBook which has been happily running Ubuntu Server for a few months. Now I want to repartition the hard drive and install Ubuntu Client, just temporarily…
Thing is, the whole thing is an encrypted LVM, and I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to do it. Can anyone help?
sorry, i was raging. i'm hungry, but someone ate my food stockpile...and i won't make them right/OK by reciprocating. i'll probably be really poor company for the rest of the night.
Usually we're presented with an error if a closure would result in the creation of a loop:

@jrg i take your point. i'm currently battling an obrama supporter on how valid criticising mis-spellings from the teaparty is as a campaign/pr-kit from eeeeediots tactic is
@jrg arguing against a campaign for "misspellings are a reason to criticize a campaign" by introducing noticeable and offensive misspellings intentionally.
I have an old PowerBook which has been happily running Ubuntu Server for a few months. Now I want to repartition the hard drive and install Ubuntu Client, while keeping my existing installation intact.
When I first installed Ubuntu, I chose to erase the entire hard drive and use it as an encrypt...
Warning, wall of text incoming. It's as well formatted as I could make it.
If we're going to answer this, we're going to answer the whole thing. I'm not doing another answer on this, so here goes:
Let's pretend you know absolutely nothing, and I'm feeding you keystrokes.
This tells you ev...
Basically I have a blank screen at the login after I have entered my password and have tried running in 2D and various other methods including downloading UBUNTU again and creating a bootable USB however none of these work since I don't have any permissions to run things in a guest account. I hav...
Why can't I add comments to others' questions? I can only answer questions but I need to clarify some more specifically. I see instructions that I should avoid thanking, clarifying and other things in answer field. I see some other people commented on those posts.
For example, I cannot add a comm...
My parents are getting older and you can see that they are really kind of struggling a bit I would like to take care of them until the end, but I am really concern about Alzheimer’s, can this be prevented? What can we do and how about the diet, does diet has something to do with it? ask by Spring...
Same situation with this user (probably a sockpuppet of that one, see "her" question -- also, there is a user with this name on OnStartups too, who made a similar post).
Also here, see text in that page from these search results. The users involved with this (not including the user who answered that question, as that particular answer was not spam) should probably be banned network-wide.
@RolandiXor I agree. Maybe another answer here that clearly states that would help? I'm not sure if that would be appropriate but I think people are often unaware that editing spam makes handling it more complicated and doesn't significantly contribute to decreasing the "value" associated with spamming SE.
I noticed that the posts of the recent spam surge on AskUbuntu were all edited by community members into something like
EDITED - REMOVED SPAM ANSWER
or similar.
While I understand why the users have done this and I too don't want to leave the spam content visible for longer than absolutely...
There is a file named RESULTS.txt and I want to open this file in my terminal. (I mean I want to see the file contents be displayed in the terminal and not in some text editor)
How do I do that ?
@Sparksis When I search for "open a text file in a terminal" I get results from mac forums for things like pico, etc. which aren't in ubuntu. This kind of question is very much welcome here. — Jorge Castro9 hours ago
I've deleted the question, told the OP that VideoBam seems to be awful and that if they insist on using video, they use somebody with a mildly better reputation (Flickr, Youtube, Facebook, etc)

I've just stumbled across this poorly worded question - if you look through the comments it appears that the user previously asked an identical question that was deleted - it occurred to me that this que...
@Oli Only if they get a SE notification they have the link to their deleted question. I don't knwo itf the notification works once teh Q was deleted (always thought so)-
This is already possible - anything you can delete, you can also leave a comment on.
So leave a comment, and then delete. Anyone who can still view the deleted post can also view the comment.
If you forget to comment before deleting, you could also just edit in a small explanation.

I'm supposing that tags specified are reordered by occurrences (the most used fo first). The first tag goes directly in title of the question, not the others, even if they could be better related and descriptive. Why this choice?
I'm administrating a networked environment and I had an interesting situation arise yesterday. When a host is required to shutdown by a regular user, it refuses to do so if other users are logged in locally. This, however, is not the case when other users are logged in via SSH. If one user is log...
Mark it for later. It's more a philosophical thing, but it's worth it
@OctavianDamiean you're a fellow tinkerer right? how would you feel about an openkindle app built from taken apart kindle app components? i'm sure it would violate some ToS somewhere, but I think it's the "right" thing to do
i'll just get someone in new zealand to publish it. they don't honor copyright on software that isn't linked to a hardware component. and if i derive from the android app, it's not linked.
once i cover not getting arrested for building it, i'm satisfied. use is a whole different thing. once it's out, it's out. if i derive REALLY readable code for something from a closed app and someone derives from me i'm not upset unless i'm hungry
I'm sure that my answer will not answer all of your questions but I guess it is a win if it answers even one.
You seem to have a profound knowledge on the subject and know what you want so you might want to do the following. Build an example application containing the aspects you want to investi...
