possibly yes.
Cool. I shall give that a go should something similar happen
i take it that your wifi needs broadcom driver. what driver are you employing?
Blacklisting it keeps it from loading instead of uninstalling it.
It it was failing to finish installing because it was already loaded it might have helped.
Otherwise I might have tried apg-get clean apt-get install -f --reinstall blah
oopss
I may have made it all crash there...
I'm using a broadcom 4311 wireless card, so the drivers bunled with the 12.04 download were not my friend I'm using the b43 driver and it's all good
And I've just learned that if you're watching a movie in firefox and running half a dozen other windows don't use "jockey-text --list" to check you are using the driver you think you're using :D it all goes upside down and you have to restart
14:10
hello brothers! what's up :D
The screen did look very pretty though...
@Prasad hey
... and sister
ok + sister ;P
14:13
lol
@Myranda well, you don't have any problem right now? I think I would leave it as it is now.
"Dear Bretheren" "AND SISTERN!" "And sistern"
brethren
lol ok :D
14:14
<-- says hello after having undone his disapperance
Isn't a sistern the thing at the bak of a toilet?
piston
I do believe I am quoting a half remembered mothy python sketch
and I have an excuse for the spelling!
Dyslexia
14:15
i thought dog was a better excuse.
maybe both!
@Takkat lol
I need to ask you a strange question (strange to ask here)....Im gonna buy a laptop cuz my PC is dead...which brand got the best support with UBUNTU linux?....dell?
@Prasad Not Samsung
@Prasad: I like lenovos cause of thinkwiki
14:17
@Prasad buy notebooks with Ubuntu pre-installed would be good
lenovo got some style
@smartboyhw: not many companies do that tho
Well that's just cheating
Dell is really the best
@smartboyhw thanks....that helps a lot :D
14:18
Nope. I hate dell
@jokerdino lol
dell's hardware has improved somewhat
@JourneymanGeek is it different from thinkpad?
But does Dell have the most certified models simply because it's got a billion billion different models which are all mostly the same?
@jokerdino why?...what is the reason?
14:19
@jokerdino: maybe
but I mostly get thinkpads ;p
ok time to get into something mind occupying.
though if google does the high def chrome notebook, and i can get a no training pants linux on it, that would be interesting
Cya folks.
huh
/away from chat.
14:20
@jokerdino bye
@jokerdino You saw Dell went private again. Might be an indicator of changes coming
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Oh. Interesting development indeed.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing: apparently everyone is convinced the PC industry is dying
with two billion monies from Microsoft... I wonder if they'll start releasing more hardware without MS pre-installed ;)
@Myranda: I'd really like to see something like the late 90s again
14:22
I think the "PC" is just changing shape...
lots of diversity in the hardware and software ecosystem
eh, you can take my desktop out of my cold dead hands ;p
@JourneymanGeek I remember one phrase that was so renowned now in Hong Kong because of a popular TV drama: "The city is dying". Now it is "The PCs are dying"
Where was that button?
That button everyone liked to use
@smartboyhw: the problem is really that PCs were used for everything, we're seeing more diversity
Tablets are all well and good, but while they're little more than a glorified mobile phone they can't replace a lot of functions...
14:23
@jokerdino !?
but there's still many things a PC is better for
Well PC may be not dying, but I do really see one day desktops will disappear
well, I shouldn't be here. oops.
he said he is /away just a couple of seconds ago!
away for a couple of seconds is away anyway
14:24
@Prasad @jokerdino LOL
I'd like to see modular laptops - seem to remember someone doing a concept design for that years ago, so you get all the pros of desktops with the size of laptops
I am not here. Sorry for disappointing guys.
damn, its cold today
But then thanks to an injury I'm heavily medicated :D
14:24
And, gals. Sorry @Myranda.
my desktop is running at 36 degrees
@jokerdino's ghost is all over the place!
5
agree!
@Takkat Oh no. Should we open a new channel to avoid the warmth of @jokerdino AGAIN!?
its ok, @jokerdino is not here anyway
14:27
@JourneymanGeek No, we should open a new chatroom to avoid the warmth of @jokerdino's ghost
Hey @FEichinger
back, me is.
@JourneymanGeek when is the town hall coming?
not sure yet
<-- likes the concept of Next Unit Computing
@JourneymanGeek Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr‌rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
14:28
It's probably not gonna be tomorrow.
@Takkat Good one
@Takkat: its cute
I assume Tue or Wed, around 8pm UTC
needs to be cheaper tho
I'll spam it :D
!!!!
upper one!
14:29
@FEichinger WHat? 8PM UTC!?
@JourneymanGeek that is always an issue ;P
joking :D
@Takkat: the raspi hits a sweetspot
@smartboyhw That's the time I assume most of the candidates are available, while being early. But I could be totally off and the "perfect" time is something completely different.
it does.
14:30
but between a 300 dollar NUC, and the cheapest regular x86 setup I can buy...
@FEichinger OK
@JourneymanGeek One day someone should build a amd64 thing like Raspberry Pi
I think i doubled my flags >_>
/me feels a little dirty
@JourneymanGeek Good one there
I need to go...bye guys..good night...:D :D :D
14:31
@JourneymanGeek Still less than me:P
I don't really like flagging, and from the comments, they're fairly cheap flags
And still less than the mighty @jokerdino
@smartboyhw: he has more than I do on SU
@JourneymanGeek oh!?
The "PC Industry Dying" thing is that everything can be a web-app now so average users don't need power-houses. And everyone wants either A massive power or B a cheap portable web browser.
14:32
yup
@smartboyhw why?
I'm just under a thousand there
he's got 1.2k here
@AbrahamVanHelpsing I want an A+B hybrid
@jokerdino explained by @JourneymanGeek
@smartboyhw: I still think its a horrible metric to base one's vote on ;p
14:34
@Takkat heh you're the powerbook audience. i accept that either/or is more achievable money-wise
I keep reading that "The Mouse is Dead" I've read that in computing magazines for at least 10 years
@AbrahamVanHelpsing: I consider the modern midrange system both
@JourneymanGeek 1. They aren't votes, they are flagts
@smartboyhw: I mean for the election
@AbrahamVanHelpsing still on Athlon dual core here...
14:34
@JourneymanGeek I know
@Myranda Touch is the new mouse.
or so they say. The experts.
coroflot.com/albertsito/FRAME I like this concept - or at least the idea... laptops made to standards regular enough to be able to swap bits
@Takkat: for roughly the price of a nexus 7 (non wifi) I could build a cheap box that can do the first
throw a little more, and it can game too
rookie
@Myranda: shuttle had some designs 3-4 years ago
14:36
Hopefully I can one day get the "Reviewer" and "Civic Duty" badge
yeah but after some years of noise I keep my fingers off Shuttle.
Some were quiet but you never knew.
I like shuttle - but they failed to make any new standards if they'd done the mini-ITX format right at the beginning then maybe they'd be a bigger player now
eh, both mini itxen I have are whitebox model
@Myranda: MITX is via
and still fairly popular
that's an interesting design. i was thinking about a modular tablet with USB expansion pods for all the peripherals. doesn't solve the GPU issue though.
14:38
/me needs to see if his PIV MITX (WHY WHYYYYY?) works
@Myranda yeah - just put in a new ITX board and have them upgraded.
if it dosen't I want to see if I can swap out the motherboard for something newer
mini-ITX is what shuttle SHOULD have done... they chose to have everything proprietry and to upgrade anything cost a fortune
@Myranda You can't upgrade their Mobo - that's a pity indeed.
14:39
how often do people do that tho?
yup, new motherboard for a new processor meant getting a whole new barebones
And the PSU always need to be changed as well.
Maybe its cause I have longer update cycles but I generally end up building whole systems every 5-7 years
@Takkat: ugh. that's a pain
combine this: coroflot.com/albertsito/MCD with this: youtube.com/watch?v=mLMWXBv5rY4 and you have a whole lot of win
Even the PSU was a shuttle design which only shuttle made and with so few customers each one cost a lot more than they should
14:41
>_>
kinda like what dell did?
I typed my password and almost pressed enter. O_o
@Myranda I once saw pictures from a Shuttle PSU from inside... still shudders
I like the phone - you can put it down and pretend you were in another room if you don't want to hang up on someone :D a phone-watch... people would be all "but it's on your wrist"
do Shuttle still make stuff? goes to check
Disable ringer button
OK I have no idea what most of you are talking about.
I feel too young.
14:43
The art of aging... ;P
eheh
"Oh, my phone was set to silent"
The only shuttle I know is space shuttles.
Or the shuttle used in badminton
XPC cube computers form a company called Shuttle
@jokerdino: one of the first companies to make SFF PCs
I wish that made more sense. shrug
14:46
small form factors
I think I'll pass
/me slaps around @jokerdino with a midget whale to demonstrate
small form factors like palmtop?
I only really know about computers some 4 years ago.
Small form factor desktop
Think a Mini-ITX sized computer 8 years ago
Hm, okay.
14:48
lol
But with a full optical drive bay and all sorts - no scrimping, just scraping your knuckles trying to cram everthign into the machine while putting it together
I think I have an old palm somewhere around here
@Myranda: happened a lot with even later models
hates small cases
You'd think if you were making a tiny case youd round all the edges enough to avoid such pains
@JourneymanGeek the Suttle cases were great - very easy to assemble.
@Takkat: I like my cases to be large enough to house small villages
14:50
would probably cost more to fabricate round edges if it's metal. plastic not so much
@AbrahamVanHelpsing: most good cases round em off
So plasticoat the metal? I'm sure it's possible for someone to think of something... shuttles cost a fortune to start with a few pennies extra would have been fine
yeah, that's fair
my first Shuttle
100% Ubuntu compatible
But loud as a vacuum cleaner
It's a neat idea for a form factor on the portability end. I had that sound issue with a BTX base too
14:55
I think all the early ones were
Sounded like it was taking off
loud that is, not ubuntu compatable... no idea about that pre-this week :D
Not all of them. My dad still has one of the silent ones. But he does not hear too well, so this feature is of no use.
Are you sure it's silent then ? ;)
I set it up.
and sometimes I have to look after things.
14:57
eheh
This bug needs heat if anyone is interested: bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/1120870
@Takkat: I haven't really come across anything grossly incompatible as of late
I'm going to try and build a silent gaming machine someday
@Myranda: mine's pretty quiet, and I didn't really go about trying to make it silent
stock cooler, stock fans
Or at least REALLY quiet... but I'd like to try a full on beast of a rig running without noise
14:59
without cloud gaming it's not going to happen. high performance video generates too much heat to dissipate nicely
unless you're going liquid cooled and you put some kind of sound damper around the pump
only gets a little loud at full tilt, but I haven't tried it since I swapped fans
Water cooling... or MASSIVE heatsinks ;)
Massive heatsinks need massive fans to produce at least some noise.
Think even biger Takkat
massive heatsinks wouldn't do it. there's a point where it doesn't help any more to make the fins longer/bigger
15:00
au contrare
bigger fans are quieter
I am thinking of wind mills.
they do seem to make some noise.
Jul 9 '11 at 20:10, by Takkat
liquid nitrogen cooler for overclockers
but might be because of the motor.
@Myranda: I have the mesh side panel version of this corsair.com/pc-cases/graphite-series-pc-case/…
liquid nitrogen is not really practical long term, unless I could find a way to pressurise the case and make it liquid nitrogen tight, which I seem to remember is a superfluid so that's not easy
15:02
lol
very quiet. Running stock intel heatsink, swapped the fan out for a noctua one (since I needed a new fan for an older system, and I'd rather have put the new fan on the nicer box)
air compressor in another room and hydraulic tubing. problem solved like a boss.
The whole silent-PC concept fails if you have a single noise-maker you haven't thought about or couldn't easily replace. Think of a chirping PSU.
Actually I did think about putting the water-cooling radiators outside the case - and in another room...
15:05
he has some interesting ideas there
PSUs can be replaced...and up to... what 600 watts you can get fanless ones? I'm sure someone has done a bigger one
though, I don't see the point of speed reducers when motherboards do speed control
@Myranda: modern PSUs, even with fans are pretty quiet
Sometimes a condensator chirps - even in a fanless device.
This sound can kill you.
@JourneymanGeek just jump out the "required" fan connectors and have it run in banks. there was a guy putting together a sick gaming case that was HUGE, but he had fans organized in "banks" and speed control knobs
So soundproof everthign...
I know! Just a normal PC, but soundproof my head - problem solved!
15:08
@AbrahamVanHelpsing: I'd just let the motherboard handle it
Earplugs
just got ninja-d by Takkat
I could actually add another 4 120 mm fans if I felt there was a point, and use the case's speed control
Right, I need foods! cupboards bare... shopping calls to me!
/away but back soon
"...now can't open windows..." - how much difference there is between upper and lower case.
My windows are dirty.
15:20
Wife complains about the neighbor hanging up dirty laundry on the line to dry every week.
Husband says nothing.
One week the wife exclaims "WOW, someone showed her how to do laundry!"
Husband chuckles and says, "Nope. She came over and cleaned the windows."
lol

@AmithKK Hello

Hey @smartboyhw @AbrahamVanHelpsing
@AbrahamVanHelpsing lifehacker.com/5982700/…
@AmithKK The presumption that it's morally wrong to keep extra money that came back from the IRS is founded on the belief that taxes for anything but national defense should exist at the federal level. All I'm going to say about that...
@AmithKK Hey yo
Bye @AmithKK @AbrahamVanHelpsing

@smartboyhw cya
@smartboyhw later on

Good Night
17:05
I might have come up with a slightly mad idea...
like?
For the next six months or so, I can't afford to make my PC better, but it doesnt have the power to run a virtual network of virtual machines to learn more network admin type things... but I could afford a couple of Raspberry Pi boards... I wonder if I could make a "fake" network, and have a program that simulates network screw-ups all over the place
you probably want to checkout Server Fault which is for sysadmins.
@Myranda i find it hard to believe that it can't run dynamips
wassa dynamips??
server not found... hmmm
then use google
ooh, that might do rather nicely... my thinking was from what happened when I tried virtual box to try ubuntu first... it was so slow that it made baby Jesus cry... but a similation of a network might well be different.
Thankies!
wanders off to read up on that
17:26
Has anyone tried running Overdrive Media Console in Wine?
@Seth Some people have. There have been mixed results. I recommend trying it to see if it works well for you.
Okay.
I'll have to see what Wine version I have.
17:40
@EliahKagan thx for the correction in ubuntu not shutting down properly, I removed my comment.
18:03
Hi guys, is there any way to move (pin, highlight, star it) an answer so it moves to the top of the list. See this question and answer: askubuntu.com/questions/55868/… since today a friend told me the answer in there did not work. I told him if he read the whole thing to which he pointed to the first answer that appears there. That one works for some but in his case it did not work, so I told him to go down a bit. Found my answer and worked
So was wondering if there is an option to order answers in some questions
@LuisAlvarado Accepted answers always (almost always?) have precedence.
@LuisAlvarado this question definitely has far too many answers. Other than counts of upvotes I knwo of no way to push an answer further up.
@Seth there is not an accepted answer (which is of advantage here)
Yeah I know that, well it was worth a shot
@Takkat just noticed that.
@LuisAlvarado yours has 12 the other 13, so get some more people to upgoat it!
all I can say
@LuisAlvarado 13:13 now... ;) the shot was the way to go probably.
18:09
Very tough to get people to vote on it
aa ok lol
nevermind
^^ thanks Takkat!!
<-- always has some not yet voted answers under his sleeve
was going to contact the OP but then....

could only upvote 2 answers, the rest I had already done some time ago
Hi everyone, can someone help me to figure out why I cannot access MySQL via service command?
18:12
I think you got the most upvoted answers from me lol
@LuisAlvarado lol - that usually is my problem too.
sure buddy, have you installed mysql already
yes, just updated and something went wrong
what appears wrong?

Q: Table making bug

ZDroidMarkdown than is on SE doesn't support table making. Read the Markdown sytax specs page - section Inline HTML. Example of true table for Markdown (and HTML) is on http://paste.ubuntu.com/1633733/. That works on some sites like GitHub, but not on SE. Why SE doesn't support this?

18:14
can you or are you able to run mysqlrepair?
command service mysql restart not working, but /etc/init.d/mysql restart does
did you add sudo to it am guessing you did but just asking
can you do the following. give me a second to find an answer I provided here about mysql problems, if not I'll write it down here
not sure, but it was working 2 hours ago, before I executed apt-get dist-upgrade
did you jump from mysql 5.1 to 5.5?
IT was long time ago, just updated client
18:18
http://askubuntu.com/questions/125686/mysql-fails-to-start-after-upgrade-installation-etc/125690#125690

http://askubuntu.com/questions/34095/cant-connect-to-local-mysql-server-through-socket-error/34130#34130
while I type a maybe answer here, feel free to read those points, just in case they give you an answer
meanwhile, we have then a problem where the service runs from /etc/init.d but not from service
maybe an upstart problem related to mysql
and we have a rogue mysql client
In my case I would
/etc/init.d/mysql start/stop works as expected but service dont
1. start the service from /etc/init.d and perform a mysqlrepair and mysqlcheck on it
2. After that do a reinstall of the service, just to make sure, the "upgrade process" did not skip something
Is it safe to reinstall it on production server?
yes
reinstall yes
purge no
^^
am assuming nobody is connected to it before you do anything
besides, having it working with bugs like that can be bad if left unchecked
if, when you do the reinstall, it needs to download something, then there was something missing
so I should run apt-get remove service-name and than install it again?
18:23
Step 3 would be to edit the /etc/init.d/mysql file and see what it is executing
no
apt-get install -reinstall mysql....
or if you have aptitude then aptitude reinstall mysql.....
OK, I will try
that will check if every dependency is there and will simply rerun any scripts it needs, like the ones that mysql has for granting permissions and such
If it does not work, I would go to see what the /etc/my.cnf file or mysql.conf file has in itin regards to the path for mysql and the socket path. Those 2 could have changed in the upgrade.
did it, but result is same, works only via /etc/init.d/
Also, if it works but still has the problem, might I recommend reconfigure the little guy with

sudo dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server-5.5
sudo dpkg-reconfigure mysql-client-5.5
@Nazariy going to create another room to not bother the rest here
which room should I access?
18:36
sudo dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server-5.5
18:48
OMG guys did you see the answer here askubuntu.com/questions/55868/… it's from this AWESOME dude. He should get an upvote for that answer because his cool!!!!
