Hello

12:36 PM
Hi.

@JourneymanGeek it shouldn't be a matter
as long as you have some context
and some quoted stuff

12:52 PM
@jokerdino Or some stuff rewritten to suit the question here. That's even better.

Q: Can we re-open this question asking how to throttle bandwidth per-user?

Tom BrossmanThis question, 'Is there an easy way to limit user bandwidth usage?' was closed as a duplicate. The possible duplicate, 'How I can limit Download/Upload bandwidth?' does not answer the new question, only addressing per-OS, per-network interface, and per-application rate limiting. Good Night

5:17 PM
@gertvdijk What is going on in this comment? Were you mixing up the OP and that answer's author?

@EliahKagan Yes. It seems you're confused about the issue (symptom) posted and the cause.
The Q is about a frozen terminal, the cause appears to be non-working sudo password.

@gertvdijk So what am I confused about?

@EliahKagan Well, what you don't understand about my previous message here?

@Mad_Dave From your comments you appear to have a different question. I suggest to ask a new one or search for similar ones to "Password is correct, but sudo does not accept it and says 'try again'". It has nothing to do with your terminal, but rather with sudo. — gertvdijk Dec 29 '12 at 18:35

Yes, I still think this comment is good.

5:24 PM
Mad_Dave is the OP. He is not the person who talked about pasting by right-clicking. He has not said anything to indicate he is using anything but GNOME Terminal. Why did you address that message to Mad_Dave?

YES
I KNOW THAT
It was meant for the OP
He has a different question.
I think we're just interpreting the posts differently.

@gertvdijk So, you are speaking to JamesR404, but you pinged Mad_Dave, and did not include JamesR404 in the comment?

I also believe your answer to that question should not belong there, as it's about a different question.

@gertvdijk Yeah, I don't know why you think that either.

@EliahKagan Yes, exactly. but not speaking to JamesR404, as it's starting with @ Mad_dave

5:27 PM
@gertvdijk The only person that could possibly make sense to is you. When you say someone's name, and their name is the only one you say, and you say "you", they are going to assume you're talking about them. Everyone is going to assume you are talking about them.
But the "you" in the comment is referring to JamesR404, right?

@EliahKagan No
OP (Mad_Dave) has a different question.
He's asking about a frozen terminal, but he actually wanted to ask How Sudo works?
I just think one of us is misinterpreting the posts.

@gertvdijk Hmm...maybe this really is about something totally different from what I thought it was about. But...why do you think he is really asking how sudo works?

@EliahKagan Because his terminal isn't frozen.
Control+C clears the "freeze" but I can still not complete any code that requires the password - Just a white flashing box after the : — Mad_Dave Dec 29 '12 at 14:42

@gertvdijk Right, the terminal is not frozen. My answer doesn't address frozen terminals.

So, basically, just the second section of your answer is the answer to this question.
@EliahKagan yes, so it's a different question, right?
OP could rewrite the question substantially, but that's not a good thing, imo.

5:32 PM
@gertvdijk I don't think the problem is Mad_Dave not knowing how no placeholder characters are printed as you enter a password on the command line. He says: "White box just flashes at me and does not move. If it does accept the enter I get the Sorry try again message"

Anyway, I'm not investing time in it anymore. It's an old question, it's abandoned, it's below noob level, etc.

Assuming the white box is the cursor, this is making two claims: (1) As I type my password, nothing visibly happens. (that's normal) (2) After typing my password, when I press enter, authentication fails (not normal).

"White box just flashes at me and does not move." > indicates to me he doesn't know what should happen, namely, exactly that.
there we have the difference in interpretation!

@gertvdijk Yes, now I understand why we coming to such different conclusions; I think I understand, basically, the nature of how we are reading it differently.
@gertvdijk So how are you interpreting the rest? That authentication fails because he presses enter before finishing entering the password?

I think he doesn't even bother typing a full password, as he expects to see the cursor moving when typing. I think this because he is talking about a frozen terminal.
Then, following other comments, I think he just presses enter without typing any password in the hope to "unfreeze" it.

5:38 PM
@gertvdijk Hmm...that is consistent with everything he has said. I'm not sure he'll understand your comment, but I think your interpretation is actually more likely to be correct than mine.

So, my thoughts, basically, he should either rewrite the question: 1) How do I use sudo in the terminal? or 2) ask a new question about that.
but really, it's like SHRUG here.

my answer is "people troll" and i start ignoring it.

@gertvdijk Yeah, I agree with what you said before, we should not write a new question for this. It's only a month old, so the OP may well reply. I've commented for clarification on the question. I've removed my comment on JamesR404's answer (as I'm sure it wouldn't make anything less confusing for anyone else).
If there's no clarification or any reply from the OP, we can close it as NARQ, TL, or dupe it, and I can delete my answer, and if there's no other good place for me to post it, I can write a self Q&A, edit it as appropriate, and post it that way. No rush though.

@user125929 which deluge in a terminal
o/ @Seth

Hi

5:44 PM
@EliahKagan I think you'll never get a reply. Unregistred user, never seen after the day asking his question.
@Seth Hi!
@Seth changed username?

@gertvdijk Hello
@gertvdijk just got rid of the 'i'
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Talking about this?

Yeah. it helps him find the client. A better solution might be to change the file association like the answer I gave on the sublimetext2 question

hmm, yeah. I don't see an option in Deluge about it.

it's really similar to doing this: askubuntu.com/questions/115113/…
i don't think it's productive to have one answer for every app though

Weird. Opens deluge automatically for me, even with transmission installed.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing probably not.
maybe we should dupe it?

5:50 PM
i'm not sure it's worth closing since the browser may prefer something other than system default. if you find a browser related question and the op provides browser details. that might be viable

good point.
just FYI this guy is the spam user. I don't remember how much rep it takes to see deleted posts, but he's the guy.

@user125929 - I know we're talking about you like you're not here. You only need one more upvote to get voice though. Answer something
@Seth i saw some of his deleteds earlier

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I don't think the user will get a notification unless he has entered chat before.

@Seth 10k to view deleted posts, but unless you're a moderator, you have to have the link to the post. Deleted posts don't appear in the lists of a user's questions and answers.

@EliahKagan oh, I didn't know that. Well, I have other proof if it's necessary.

5:59 PM
I have installed Ubuntu12.10 in my brand new dual core 2GB machine and I have found it to be extremely slow and buggy.

i saw it earlier...and we believe you

@srikanthchandrasekaran first thing I ask: Graphics card and graphics drivers? 32bit or 64bit?

140
Q: How can I improve overall system performance?

Decio LiraWhat are your tips for improving overall system performance on ubuntu? Inspired by this question I realized that some default settings may be rather conservative on Ubuntu and that it's possible to tweak it with little or no risk if you wish to make it faster. This is not meant to be application...

@srikanthchandrasekaran try lts (12.04) but saying "slow and buggy" is a bit broad

@AbrahamVanHelpsing ^^ this.

6:00 PM
I want to change to 12.04 from 12.10 and in my current install, I have / , /home, and /boot in seperate partitions. which ones should i change when reinstalling
@AbrahamVanHelpsing I don't know the reasons for the slowness. So I am not able to explain

there's a downgrading question on site already.

@Seth how can i check?
@AbrahamVanHelpsing please note i have a very specific question

25
Q: How to roll back Ubuntu to a previous version?

iUngiI just installed a new version of Ubuntu and I want to roll it back to the previous version. How can I do that? Is that even possible?

That's the general downgrading question, I think.

uname -m for arch. lspci | grep VGA to get started on which video drivers

@srikanthchandrasekaran what does lspci | grep VGA return?
oops, already added :P

6:03 PM
my questions is, should i reinstall all of /,/home and /boot when reinstalling or should i only reinstall / and /boot?
or in other words, can i reuse my /home?

from the question we linked you to already:
'''
Keep your data separate. Having your /home/ within the same partition as your installation is a recipe for a headache if you're constantly upgrading/downgrading things. Push it off to another disk or at least another partition so that when you do need to reinstall, you really just need to set up the mount.
'''
sounds like keep it to me...

so i don't even need to set /? i need to set up only /mount?

don't be an intentionally obtuse. of course you need a / partition.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing please don't use hard words. just because i am new to linux, does not mean you can brand me as something regarding to everything

on windows, if you don't have a C: drive you don't have C:\Program Files right? that's not linux specific.

6:08 PM
@Seth 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 980a
@AbrahamVanHelpsing ok gotcha. so i need to reinstall / and /boot partition. but can keep my old /home partition

oh great. ATI.

@Seth is it good?

no, ATI is usually that hardest to get working.

lsmod | grep fglrx
@Seth /me loves ati

@AbrahamVanHelpsing no output

6:11 PM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing shrug I have Nvidia so maybe you can fix it :P

my lappie runs an nvidia card...

@sri then you're running the OSS drivers.

@Seth so maybe that is reason for slow performance?

57
A: What is the correct way to install ATI Catalyst Video Drivers (fglrx)?

Stephen MyallThe following Instructions below explain how install the latest ATI Catalyst Video driver of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise For Ubuntu 12.10 instructions click here Note AMD has released the Catalyst 12.8 driver for Linux systems in August bringing some improvements and bug fixes. This driver ...

it's all on-site if you look for it. and possibly yes (the OSS drivers, not the fact that it's ATI...my ATI was screamin').

ok will check it out. thanks

@Seth Aren't you using a screenshot tool? it seems manually cropped. askubuntu.com/a/247957/88802

6:15 PM
@gertvdijk shutter.
@srikanthchandrasekaran most definitely.

@Seth yes, me too, but it crops it perfectly for me, no background on the edges of windows.

askubuntu.com/q/247956/56425 relating to this question. i currently have a low end laptop. But very soon (within a week), i will be buying a with i7 3770k , and good motherboard and 16GB RAM. Are 12.10 and 12.04 versions equally good in utilizing the high performance capability, or is 12.10 any better?

@gertvdijk oh, I used "Selection" and cropped it. idk why I didn't use the other one...
BBL

@srikanthchandrasekaran 12.10 is way better for Ivy Bridge

6:18 PM
@srikanthchandrasekaran nothing to do with other system specs, just the new hardware support is better in 12.10
@Seth ah okay. :)
@srikanthchandrasekaran alternatively, install 12.04 with the 12.10 kernel (linux-image-generic-lts-quantal)

please don't tell people to mix and match when they're already not working right. it just makes it even harder to pin down

@gertvdijk please say more explicitly how i can achieve that

@srikanthchandrasekaran sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-quantal and reboot.

ok
@gertvdijk advatages?

But really, new hardware, means you'll need newer Ubuntu in general.
@srikanthchandrasekaran new kernel, new hardware support.

6:22 PM
gotcha

tell him to use ksplice while you're at it. his stuff is already broken. we should definitely layer on some more complexity

@AbrahamVanHelpsing he's talking about a new laptop

new desktop

or desktop, whatever :P

i was just getting at, if you don't know how to determine which video drivers you're using and you want community support -- even for another device -- you should not be mix and matching.

6:27 PM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing yup, I wasn't involved in this discussion.

hmm well. I always store/backup my data in external hard drive and online. So I don't mind reinstalling operatiing systems many times even if stuffs break. Anyway I will learn slowly
bye all. gotta go now. good night everyone :)

@srikanthchandrasekaran night. just so you know, i was trying to protect you from yourself.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I did not take any offense at all. I can understand your concern. And I am ready to explore and break stuff too.
Sorry. but really need to sleep now. It is past midnight here. thanks for all your help

8:08 PM
hey guys... just wanted to know how many editc i can make on my old questions....
I realized the few of my oldest questions i posted as newbie were not actually in form of question (How to ?? kind of) ... rather they were like statements (Ubuntu server from ubuntu minimal)
i decided to correct them but now the system is sayin me."Too many edits".... whats t limit per day ? n how to overcome that ?

8:58 PM
@Seth @Lucio I'm the resident PHP guy, in case you forgot. ;)
@Z9iT Edit cap is daily and is reset somewhen around midnight UTC, I believe.

9:17 PM
@FEichinger I didn't forget... I just remembered how ping sensitive you are :P

hey
hello, please can you help me, how to solve "Cannot find GTK: Is gtk-config in path?" ?

what are you trying to run?

hey
please help me

9:32 PM
intresting, I get the same error, on the ./config step right?

hey
yes
./configure
i am trying to install gtk+-36.1 now, we'll see
very slow, but hope it helps

This is the error I got:

checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.0... no
*** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found
*** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the

configure: error: Cannot find GTK: Is gtk-config in path?

hey
still doesn't work :(
yes, i get the same
it is probably not my destiny to get this working

looks like it needs an older version of gtk

hey
mateo, you are probably the last person on earth who can change my destiny

9:43 PM
and that requires another old package.. and so on.

@hey : actually, @mateo_salta just condemned you to eternal obsoleteness

LOL

hey
:D

you might need the dev files
i.e. gtk-whatever-dev
assuming you're working from the repositories that is

You could try using a really old ubuntu version in a virtual machine

9:45 PM
**cough*8.04*cough**

hey
i don't want to :(
maybe there are other good ARM simulators?
i just want to learn arm by writing code and see results

/me loads up a VM

"Virtual Monster loaded and available for service, orders?"

either that or go treasure hunting for dependencies only to have it break everything

@hey which Ubuntu are you on?

hey
9:47 PM
12.04

good that's the Vm i have loaded
wait here a bit

hey
I will The Lord of Time, I will...

@hey i am testing something on Lubuntu (it has the GTK libraries)
give me amoment
we'll see if this solution works for the software

hey
thank you very much

9:52 PM
waits for installation of libgtk2.0-dev to finish
removed in Jaunty:
Removal requested on 2009-02-23.
Deleted on 2009-02-23 by Steve Langasek

(From Debian) RoQA; outdated, dead upstream, depends on legacy libs, low popcon
having said this
lets see if this builds... and what other deps i need :p

yep, treasure hunting time!

bah screw it
reboots into Ubuntu since the VM is evil

hey
:(

wow, libgtk2.0-dev depends on alot

yes it does

9:56 PM
@Seth I'm not ping sensitive. :P It's just that I usually get pinged just when I don't have much time.

and it doesn't work because gtk-configure is missing
checks builddeps for the hardy version
Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 4.0.0), libgtk1.2-dev, autotools-dev, binutils-dev (>= 2.15-6)
okay so interesting development:
libgtk2.0-dev doesn't have a gtk-configure script. :P

@FEichinger No worries, I was joking :P

and that's when i tried to install libgtk 1.2, ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/gtk+/1.2

GTK+ 1.2? What? That's ancient!

@Seth You were right, btw. The first one is usually preferred, although a different echo syntax - or multiple echo calls - might be in order. And, obviously, <blink> is deprecated since ... pretty much ever.

10:01 PM
@gertvdijk yep, @hey wants to install this brej.org/kmd

@FEichinger glad to get your feedback :)

Yeah, I saw that. But if that depends on GTK+ pre-2, then just don't bother... really...

hey
but i really need that software

then boot up a really old version of the OS

@hey Find alternatives, or install Ubuntu 8.04 and live with that.
You're asking to run software built 10+ years ago here.

hey
10:03 PM
i can't find any good alternatives. i need to run arm code on some software

Could you maybe create a persistent 8.04 on a USB drive?

hey
10 years for The Lord of Time is nothing
3

or an eternity, depending on how you look at time

Okay, last update is 2004-06-19. Before Ubuntu was even Ubuntu

hey
wow, it's 2013 already, unbelievable
3

10:08 PM
@Seth Any time.
Starship Troopers on TV here right now, lol.

eh?

hey
@TheLordofTime nop?@

@hey this looks similar

Q: Installing gtk-config and/or fsv, missing GTK dependencies

Wayne WernerI'm trying to install the File System Visualizer (think "It's a UNIX System! I know this!" from Jurassic Park) on Ubuntu 10.10. I've got the .tar.gz downloaded, and extracted. However, when I ./configure, I get this output: loading cache ./config.cache checking for a BSD compatible install... /...

@Seth Hm?

@FEichinger What are you talking about?

10:16 PM
@Seth I just switched on my TV. Starship Troopers is running. I find that funny.

hey
@mateo_salta doesn't allow to install

2
A: Installing gtk-config and/or fsv, missing GTK dependencies

João Pintothat software is unmaintained and requires GTK1 which is an obsolete graphical library version, it is not available from the Ubuntu repositories and I am not aware of any repository providing it. I would recommend you to contact the software author and check with him if there is an upgrade plann...

is the answer.

@FEichinger ah, lol.

yeah, he is on 10 and having problems...

hey
dependency not satifiable

10:18 PM
downward spiral of downgrading dependencies

hey
sorry?

a downward spiral back to 8.04

If you try to install all the dependencies something is going to break

hey
i don't want something to be broken
4

Then don't install whatever you're trying to install.

hey
10:21 PM
but i really need that

^^ that

I'm sorry, but you're very unlikely to get that running without breaking something.

hey
so maybe you know where I could run arm code?

You can try, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

@hey on your mobile device :)

hey
10:22 PM
how?
i have samsung galaxy

then it's already running ARM software. but it's not going to solve your issue about this piece of software, right?

hey
if i could run code like
mov r0, #5
add r0, r0, #1
and ouput 6, i would be more than happy :D

that's Assembly

hey
yes

Then all you need is an ARM emulator, to which you push the assembly binary.
And with the advent of ARM processors in mobile devices, I bet there's something like that for more recent GTK versions ... or any other graphics kit, for that matter.
Heck, the Android SDK emulates an ARM, I believe.

10:29 PM
what type of arm device do you have @hey, I have a rasberry pi, and a cubieboard, those are fun

hey
i just have samsung galaxy if that counts?

@mateo_salta which one do you consider to be better?

@hey I haven't watched the discussion much, but ... seeing how you seem unfamiliar with the ARM hardware ... What exactly are you trying to do - why do you want to run ARM assembly?

hey
I just want to learn programming in assembly

@Seth they both have their good points, cubieboard runs Android on chip, sata, and 1GHz 1G ram, but rasberry pi was easier to set up for linux so far
cubieboard has a ubuntu type install for it though!
although, so far it looks like they have been having trouble for getting drivers for xbmc on cubieboard, we will see how that progresses...

11:06 PM
How do we deal with random users putting a bounty on a question which turns out to be different than the OP's? In this case, the one putting a bounty on the Q has different hardware. askubuntu.com/questions/138217/…
This is very confusing. Details posted are now mixed up.

11:17 PM
We compile multiple answers, branched based on model, into one question, and hope the correct one for the bounty-er is among them.
Read: There's nothing anyone can do, pretty much.

close as too localized after the bounty expires

Okay. well, I would suggest this bounty-user to create a new question and refer to this (unanswered) one. It's very confusing in the current state.

someone might upvote in the next 40 min, if you really want 25 rep
