@mateo_salta No, somebody actually downvotes it...

aw, well I tried.

:)

1:01 AM
@hey there's a qemu VM that maps to the raspi
@RolandiXor - yeah...or you were speaking in the style of the flackbot

@AbrahamVanHelpsing that's a natural gift/talent of mine :)

@gertvdijk just tell him to file it against alsa and call it a day. maybe he'll give you the bounty anyway.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I think he downvoted it actually, but okay, yeah I just commented this.

why people downvote something that verifiably works on someone else's hardware... just not their own. beyond me.

Q: How do I reboot my ebuntu software to windows 7 I have a boot Disk but dont know which option to boot

user126400I have a 64 bit desk top that has ebuntu installed on it for some reason my passord is no longer workikng so I cannot even access my computer . I have a windows 7 software boot disk but I do not know how to actually use it to boot ? also how to reset my password would be very useful lol thankyou....

"Ebuntu"? Really?

that could get split up in to three questions a duped

It could also gain a simple "For the love of god, capitalization and punctuation aren't sins." comment, but I'm not in the mood.
^ Go me!

heh. with it ending on lol thankyou...i'm thinking it's just someone being silly

It doesn't even end there. It keeps going after that.

@FEichinger check the edits on that. i don't think i changed the meaning.

1:25 AM
Meh, seems nice. I flagged it as low quality. Wouldn't call it sufficiently salvagable without major information.

Yeah. I already voted to close as dupe...there's just no reason to leave a text-wall a text-wall

Dupes don't get deleted though, LQ does, iIrc. ;)

@FEichinger you've never used ebuntu?!

@RolandiXor No, I've lived in a cave for the past century. Mind enlightening me? :P

There's a possibility they meant edubuntu

1:29 AM
@FEichinger ebuntu is a new official *buntu that uses e for everything.

Ebuntu is Ubuntu with Enlightenment (E17) (wiki.ubuntu.com/Elbuntu?action=show&redirect=Ebuntu). Edubuntu is educational derivative of Ubuntu.

sigh Seriously now? ... What the bleeding heck?

I was jk... but apparently you are not.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing That sounds reasonable.
@RolandiXor The sad thing is, with the amount of randomly appearing and disappearing DEs and derivatives, an actual ebuntu existing didn't seem too far off.

@FEichinger true lol

1:34 AM
people should stop forking and start spooning (showing existing packages some love)

@AbrahamVanHelpsing in many cases yes.
We also need some new applications to fill certain gaps.

that's fair too.

We need one core, and a bunch of working DEs. Not a half-baked distro for every DE.

who was it saying they wanted a podcast tracker so they could sync their phone and their dekstop playlist? was it jrg?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Just ping random people with it. You'll probably get the right one.
(Or you could be lame and use Search)

1:38 AM
it was a while back before app showdown. was one of his ideas i think. like gpod except with a phone-side app that could communicate what was listened to back to the desktop.

Some of those are priceless:
> "We demand $1 trillion/year fund to challenge against cardiovascular disease,cancer and death."
> "Declare the Monday following the Super Bowl a national holiday."
(And that one has 7,000 signatures.)

sort by popular

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Why? Then they sound actually legit.
Except for the obvious "QQ we lost the election." ones.

it lets you narrow down the # of signature funny zone

> "Recognize International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19)"

that is a little funny. while we're at it, let's do away with time zones and all just use Zulu time...

Oh, I agree with the petition, mind you. But the very notion that this is petitioned for ... is plain ridiculous.

Best. One. Yet.
> "officially recognize the Sasquatch as an indigenous species and have them lawfully protected by laws banning any hunting"

Dammit, @GeorgeEdison ... You're killing me.

1:55 AM
@GeorgeEdison wait isn't it already the state animal of alaska?

@GeorgeEdison Would have to be done globally to work, though. Timezone calculations get all funny with random DS changes.

@FEichinger parts of indiana don't do daylight savings time while other parts do iirc

> "Make, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS), a legal form of protesting."
Probably not a good idea...

@GeorgeEdison lolno.

1:58 AM
> "authorize the production of a recurring television program featuring Vice President Joe Biden"

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Now, imagine that confusion on a global scale.

> "Direct the United States Mint to make a single platinum trillion dollar coin!"

@GeorgeEdison It would be called the daily gaff

@GeorgeEdison I'd sign that, if I were American.

> "demand justice for police killing our family pets!"
Really?

2:01 AM
@GeorgeEdison Well, excessive use of force against animals does go largely unpunished, afaik.
And, as Pavlov taught us: A taser would probably suffice.

can you imagine the memes if somebody got an officer tazing a dog on camera though? it would be don't taze me bro all over again

I absolutely hate dogs, but I'd take the memes over a dead one no less. :P

I mean if they had to take a shot at it to feel safe...Our family pet could have been:

Hi @GeorgeEdison,

2:12 AM
@RolandiXor or that...still. just saying. you never know

TBH I have little clue of what the whole discussion is about, but I thought a cute dog would be nice.

I'm not touching you should be the caption here:

so i want to get in to low level hardware, but i can't find an entry point...this arduino project has me thinking there HAVE to be fun projects around

2:47 AM
Am I the only one getting this?

no same for me
sort by active appears broken

yeah, and that's not fun.

@Seth That was happening to me for about 5 minutes only on active questions. Now it seems resolved for me.

Actually, just started working here too...
weird.

still whoopsing here. might be which server you're on and some kind of active updating that evidences that way

@GeorgeEdison Hey!

ugh. not working for unanswered question, for me, now.

3:29 AM
here's a weird one...wine added vbs-setscriptstate back in 1.3.8, but the 1.5 version from repo is erroring out as not implemented...

yawns
my ubuntu partition magically fixed itself
NO CLUE WHAT HAPPENED, but non-use somehow fixed it
o.O
anyways, how goes it?

BBL

@TheLordofTime it goes. trying to get in to closer to hardware stuff. how goes it for you?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing meh

that good huh?

important stuff eraser. that's cute

...and that's why there is a "trust" level for recipes.
...and why we make the source code of each one public.

or why you don't fork people you don't know har har

4:13 AM
Since this is going to be fixed in 13.04 shouldn't we close this as OT?

@Seth you are SURE it's fixed in 13.04? maybe link to a source on that and the bug and tell him to request a backport of the fix to LTS on launchpad? i'ld upvote that answer

erg, let me see if I can find my source again :/

i was talking to sabdfl on IRC doesn't count unless you can produce logs ;)
if you can't source it then just close it.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing lol
@AbrahamVanHelpsing I'm getting there....

Q: What to do about answers that offer suggestions without emphasizing that the answer is merely a suggestion?

vasa1I have seen suggestions proffered as answers. My concern in when such "answers" don't emphasize, or even hint, that the suggestion is just that and not based on the answerer actually having tried out the suggestion to see if it really works. Other than just downvoting such an answer, is there so...

Q: Is my approach to fixing plagiarized tag wikis a good one?

Eliah KaganI've been fixing tag wiki plagiarism lately. I think it's time for me to explain what I've been doing and get input from the community. We h...

LekensteynWhile reviewing a suggested edit, I encountered something weird: a title is deleted and no title is inserted in the diff as can be seen below. I'm back~ ^v^

@Mochan Welcome back!

@EliahKagan Ah, thanks! It's great to be here. I've just been on a holiday to a semi-local beach for 10 days ;)

11:29 AM
@Mochan That sounds like a good thing. You must love Ask Ubuntu, to be glad to have that done with to be back here! :P

@EliahKagan I do. I almost feel sad to be behind with all the news, even if It's a mere 10 days C:
Hi @BharathVRP

12:26 PM
@Mochan Welcome back! :D

@FEichinger Hey FEichinger. Long time no see. How's life?

Here the OP's goal is to make a bootable USB flash drive out of a Windows installation ISO, using Ubuntu. I seem to recall we had a question for that. Does anyone know?

Q: windows over ubuntu

user126493I installed Ubuntu 12.10 few days ago to test it on my computer using wubi. Unfortunately I had a problem with my video card driver as I could not install it due to FGLRX issues. I followed the how-to on installation very closely but it still didn't work. The result was poor graphics. I wan...

@Mochan Boring, tiresome and awfully cold. But other than that, it's nice. :P

@FEichinger Cool! For me, it's been relaxing, a little tiresome (having to wake up early e.o) and hot :P

Heheh.

12:33 PM
hey. how can i install a software from source code in ubuntu 12.04

That largely depends on the software you're trying to install.

23
Q: How to install a .tar.gz (or .tar.bz2) file?

SilambarasanI have downloaded tar.gz files. But I don't know how to install it. How do I install this kind of file?

However, if you want to compile source, make a deb package, and install the package, you should do it differently. So as @FEichinger says, it depends.

@EliahKagan please say how i can do it. I want to install for all users in my comp. I understand that it is possible only with a .deb package

@srikanthchandrasekaran Have you tried Google?

@srikanthchandrasekaran Whether or not you make a deb package, you can install for all users. What are you trying to install? Have you read those or similar guides?

12:38 PM
@Mochan questions like this make me NOT wanna come here to stackexchange.com.

The problem here is, "source code" can be anything.

it is a tar.gz package of a software called GNS3
@FEichinger Are all tar.gz same or different?

@srikanthchandrasekaran Well, Google is a useful place. Why ask for a 'new' answer when one already exists? Would you ask a mathematic stackexchange how to use algebra? No, because thousands of people already have answers on the internet ready for you to use - accessible via Google.

@srikanthchandrasekaran When you have a tar archive, including tar.gz, usually the method you use to unpack, configure, built, optionally test, and install are very similar. You should be able to use the methods explained in the two sources I link. They are better explanations than I could give without building the software myself. The archive will contain instructions also, though those may be more technical.

First step: Unpack it using the linked instructions, look for a README file or similar.

12:42 PM
@FEichinger quick question - should I use LVM with my new Ubuntu install?

@FEichinger ok will try it

@Mochan Well, I don't.

@Mochan What are you planning on using the machine for? Have you thought of any reasons why you might or might not want to use LVM? LVM is a bit more complicated, so a bit more involved to recover or repair. But it's very versatile, you can in effect grow and shrink partitions at will, even extend them seamlessly to other drives, including drives not present at the time of installation.

@srikanthchandrasekaran Oh, also, did you read this? It's a little outdated, but the way it works shouldn't have changed that much. Option B in particular.

@EliahKagan I'm using it for a work computer. I've only installed Ubuntu 5 times, so I have tested much :P
@FEichinger I didn't end up using it. I don't think it's awfully necessary.

12:48 PM
@Mochan Tbh, unless you excessively use various partitions that need to be changed on the fly, there's barely any need for it. It's nice to have, but it's more often than not just kernel clutter.

@FEichinger Kernel Klutter C:

@Mochan ★

@FEichinger ;)
Who's looking forward to 13.04? :D

Not me. 12.10 was unstable enough already.

@FEichinger Very happy 12.10 user here ;)
Hey @mateo_salta

12:57 PM
HI @Mochan

@mateo_salta How's life? :)

@mochan going well, you?

@JourneymanGeek Kubuntu is worth a happy dance or two, I feel. I might have a pure Kubuntu install on a VM or something (when I finally iron out the idiotic problem si have with it)

Argh, KDE

@jokerdino You are not worth a happy dance. Hi, though.

Hi regardless.

Is there a Cinnamon DE for Ubuntu?

There is.
Available in PPA for 12.10 and slightly older.
And available from repo in 13.04

1:13 PM
Kewl q~u~
!
Can't wait for 13.04~ QuQ

I am not waiting.

@jokerdino: I like KDE

I prefer Gnome.
KDE feels too blueish.

I respect your religious preferences ;p

TY. (In Unity atm)

There are things I like in each of the major DEs.

1:16 PM
@jokerdino: most important for me, I'm familiar with it ;p

That's probably the major issue. i get bored with it

Also, ubuntu boot time is scary

It feels all too familiar :P

Its booting up in 4-5 seconds off a slow 5400 laptop hard drive

Mine isn't any fast but I don't particularly care either.

1:17 PM
XD
Its on my new desktop
thats the one thing I hate about this install.
16 gig swap on a 40 gig drive ;p

and RAM?

dupey selection

I could probably load the whole OS in memory if I wanted to

@Mochan sorta

I got to i7 processor and thought that it was a nice computer.

1:28 PM
@jokerdino It's easy to filter through, but I can't be bothered (12:28 AM ._.)

Its a great computer without being overkill

@JourneymanGeek What are the RAM, HDD and graphics?
Mochan is feeling lazy ._.

@MochanL 16 gb ram, gforce 660 (asus, overclocked version). HDD is 250 gb + 40 gb + 500 gb

Journey.....this week....I have been thru linuxmint 14 cinnamon, ubu 12.10, lubuntu, and now back to 12.04....
nope, ubuntuask...google it

lol
@Elysium: I've used this in the past
just frustrated cause Its been one of those installs
everything possible going wrong ;p

which one....do you mean?
12.04?
compiz keep crashing....that's one thing that drives me nuts. :D
I might just go back to gnome-fallback.......not very stylish...but at least it worked in 11.10....dunno if it work with 12.04
journeyman....do you know how to make workspaces stationary? I mean if I click on the icon of, for example, google....I dont want it to take me to the workspace where it is...but to open a new window of google

@Elysium Yeah, the iATKOS website says that to download the .dmg image. I don't know if it's possible to download from another related site with another format. Anyway, thanks for the help, I'll see what I can do.

I run KDE

ok...that is something new to me.

2:43 PM
@Elysium: lets see. I had two different errors including a segfault on my liveusb, the partitioner threw a cryptic error until I created a partition with fdisk on the installed drive ....
now it turns out there's a bug of some sort ;p
with the kernel maybe
I'll see if I can hack at it tommorrrow ;p

haha
not your lucky day either....is it? :D

lol
past few days
its a learning experience ;p
bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/… .... it affects AMD too?

no idea...you are asking the wrong person. I use an ATI HD 5650 graphic card and it sucks big time with 12.10
no driver available....that's why I went back to 12.04

I'e installed twice ;p

well...there are drivers available but they dont work properly

2:48 PM
@Elysium: not what the bug is. That it even exists ;p
its quite easy to fix, just not at *checks*10.50 pm ;p

I hear you.....
gotta go. Have a good day guys.

or you can check the "Answer my own question" box while asking and then you can add an answer right away

@Seth I was not talking about me - but I don't want to tell someone who found an answer to his own question and gave it in a comment to "make an answer" when he cannot do that yet.
