@iSeth Well, technically it succeeded by making you disintegrate.
A simple start... thoughts?
Titanic, really?

@FEichinger I am a shapeshifter.
Bad associations for troubleshooting, dontchathink?
04:01
@GeorgeEdison +1
@iSeth A shape*shifter* can't just dissolve. It'd turn into something different.
Something ... non-air.
How does it look on the project page now?
@GeorgeEdison Still Titanic-y.
@GeorgeEdison can turn into air/mist/matter
04:02
I think the idea is great.
...just a bad drawing :P
I think it looks good.
@GeorgeEdison it needs more cowbell.
It needs a lot of help.
But the idea of "piloting a ship through the murky waters of log files" sounds good.
And sinking by invisible iceberg.
it does look kinda like a half folded birthday card with poll data on top :/
Silence is the lack of audible sound or presence of sounds of very low intensity. By analogy, the word silence can also refer to any absence of communication, including in media other than speech. Silence is also used as total communication, in reference to non verbal communication and spiritual connection. Silence also refers to no sounds uttered by anybody in a room or area. Silence is an important factor in many cultural spectacles, as in rituals. In discourse analysis, speakers use brief absences of speech to mark the boundaries of prosodic units. Silence in speech can be hesitation...

@mateo_salta Awesome! I really like that one!
@iSeth - Any objections to me building upon the shrug button a bit? Got some crazy ideas right now.
@FEichinger I think we're on the same line. Go for it ;)
04:11
:D .....i need to go...bye
I was also thinking of a allen wrench as a check mark
@mateo_salta good idea.
even?
intresting
@GeorgeEdison "None of the above." :P
04:23
I would change that if I had an account.
but I don't want to make one.
@iSeth You can easily create one.
@iSeth :(
You get so many nice things...
how bout a sail boat
@GeorgeEdison lol
Whoa.
I like that much better.
04:24
@mateo_salta that's the best by far!
May I please have the SVG?
Actually, I might retrace it and use the official Ubuntu colors - but I will definitely give you the credit for it.
ok, I'll send it
@GeorgeEdison I like the current colors. BTW does your site use OpenID?
does the chat support svg
@iSeth It's an OpenID provider.
We provide you with an OpenID instead of letting you log in with OpenID.
So you can use our website to log into other websites.
04:27
@GeorgeEdison ah, that's why it didn't work.
@GeorgeEdison I really hate that. Everyone providing OpenID defeats the purpose of the whole thing.
+1 ^^
"Register once, login everywhere." Not "Get a new OpenID on every other site."
@FEichinger But somebody's got to provide an OpenID.
It might as well be me :)
04:29
@GeorgeEdison SE does
Even. Friggin. Google. Does.
@mateo_salta Thanks.
did that work
@mateo_salta yes it did.
I just realized ... StackExchange chat uses a table-based layout.
04:35
@FEichinger what in the world. What happen to being "up to date with HTML5"???
gasp
@iSeth That's exactly what I just thought. wth ...
lol div tags around the tables
@mateo_salta There is no reason to use tables for what they use them for, though.
LightDM just restarted for no reason.
I lost my boat :(
04:36
I'll just use your icon for now.

It's worth learning.
actually i tried too, and gave up. Though I was younger then.

@GeorgeEdison yeah.. I mean in the current scenario users try to post the question and then use the list of tags that relate to the question. but now I feel the UI you have developed will help users ... instead of looking for tags to mark related to there question. they will have the opportunity to use your UI at the very beginning
Right.
I'm hoping I can get some people on board this project.

@jokerdino!! LTNS!! :DD
How long is too long for you?
Um... 3 days.
Probably.
I am on IRC more often these days.
I have a python project.
09:27
I tried to ask the others for help today - but apparently I epic failed so... yeah. I had my HDD replaced and I need help installing them properly. Read the transcript if you're curious.
@jokerdino Interesting. I would be no help at all :3
i have no exp with drivers
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L why isn't that on ServerFault or even here?
@jokerdino OK lol
@gertvdijk I posted a comment about that. I thought also asking for a list wasn't appropriate but IDK...

Hello there.
How's things in AU land?
Things seem to be quite apparently.
13:14
@OctavianDamiean you mean quiet?
Quite.
Building RPMs for an in-house developed application here... this is not fun. Reminds me again why I like Debian/Ubuntu.
@gertvdijk hah
debian packaging is fun when you are not doing it.
hello ppl
13:27
@jokerdino I like Debian packaging actually. You'll have to love the heuristics, though.
anyone alive ?

Debugging JavaScript is so painful ...
Good afternoon everyone, anyone available for a quick question? :)
Just shoot =D
@RolandiXor such a cute cat! :D
@FEichinger thanks, here goes: I've had a couple of questions in the review queue today where I'm unable to click on the edit button any idea as to why that is? Is it because there's already a pending edit?
13:43
Mouse over the edit link and you'll get a reason.
Usually, it's just someone else who suggested an edit before you, yeh.
Ah thanks ;) Another edit has already been suggested
also
Any time.
@FEichinger quick question, completely unrelated, how did you learn to JavaScript? And is Java knowledge useful for coding in JavaScript? :)
Well, as for "How to learn [language]" I'm kinda the wrong person to ask. I just ... go ahead and do it. Some project I work on, look up the documentation, try to get it working in a clean manner.
As for Java, though, no that's not needed at all. Java and JavaScript have next to nothing to do with one another at this point.
If you want to start learning JavaScript right now, I'd recommend codecademy.com As interactive and thorough as you can get on this. :D
And now I'm back to "trying to figure out why it doesn't even run half way through" sigh
I was wondering if some of the logic in Java could be applicable to JS, but I guess its the case for 99% of languages, so obvious question :P but yeah I need to find some free time to learn a few languages: Python + JS mainly
13:48
Hey @JorgeCastro, George Edison was looking for feedback re: his new UI.
@FEichinger yeah had heard about codeacademy anyways good luck! Hate debugging but feels good once its done ;)
@Oyibo Wonderful tracks for both at Codecademy. Python, Ruby, jQuery, JavaScript, heck even HTML5 + CSS3. Imho that's the way to go for beginners at web scripting languages, really.
Also: JavaScript is a logical clusterfuck. It makes no sense, it makes no attempt to make sense and it is barely standardized.
shrug
Hahah!
It works!
Well ... not exactly how it should ... But you get the drift.
14:05
Now it works how it should.
Only lacks a UI now.
@jokerdino I'm not really a UI expert
good afternoon peeks
14:22
@JorgeCastro he said he values his feedback.
I don't really think an app will help
people aren't going to install an application
we're talking about the troubleshoot and report tool in meta?
jrg
jrg
yeah
having a deja-vu feeling on that one
- *my computer is broken*
- install this toll and report back
- *my computer is fcken broken, I wont install any stupid tool, u all suck!*
this comes to my mind
yeah it's like, I can't bother to form a proper sentence. But I'll take the time to install this app for you.
14:26
idd :)
"I can't install the tool, my internet is broken, that's why I'm asking you guys!"
5
LOL
think there was an idea like that last year or so about the same lines, no?
@JorgeCastro ★
@bruno, I think Oli answered one.
I think the problem stems from people wanting AU to be a friendly bug tracker.
14:27
BBL
the tool will end up looking just like .... apport.
apport is very useful for devs :P
I think it was in the beginning when people were like "can we get support for AU taking apport submissions"
the base of all good ideas is need... do we really need this? no, no we don't, me thinks :/
@JorgeCastro That's an answer to the Q. 1) it's not just about internet related issues. 2) it should come as a static binary, so download to flash drive, insert flash drive, run it. This is what people are used to coming from Windows!
14:35
@gertvdijk Have you ever used windows?
@BrunoPereira Unfortunately, yes, a lot.
@gertvdijk Have you ever used the Microsoft FixIt tool? (as in OMG its so useful!)
@BrunoPereira The one that takes ages and always reports it can't fix the issue?
I'm not proposing a tool to fix things. remember that.
@gertvdijk I know, its fine that you are eager to try this, have my fingers crossed something useful will come out of it. Really.
@BrunoPereira yeah we'll see. I've started this just to see what people are thinking. If an A stating "No, this won't help, because of reason X, Y, Z" and it gets upvoted a lot, then I won't bother.
14:39
I just don't think people will use it.
@gertvdijk what jorge said
^ this should be the answer to all questions, ever
and if you want to do it, making the tool that already ships ubuntu provide that might be a beteter way
like you click a button and then it puts the info in the paste buffer or something
@JorgeCastro One of my thoughts too, yet... 1) how do we get a custom System Information application in the current Live images? and if we manage to do this by a new package, 2) it is confusing if one version of this application doesn't provide "AskUbuntu support" and another does. 3) not all DEs have the same System Information application, so this would needs us to expand the work to all... KDE, Unity,... — gertvdijk 18 mins ago
well you would just submit fixes to the existing applet in ubuntu
it already ships on there by default
@JorgeCastro I don't think this would be integrated upstream. A simple System Information applet should depend on APT libs, listing iptables, output stuff in Markdown, etc.
I do agree this is a good idea from the user perspective though!
14:46
sec I am searching for apps
there has to be a system information gui thing people have already made
@JorgeCastro yep. I wasn't thinking about writing it from scratch if I would write it. Yet it has specific requirements or else it will fail, imo.
@gertvdijk wow, what a massive typo right there. You've found it, it's yours. :D
Oh hello, Mr. Jorge Castro. How's things?
hey dude!
Long long time no see, eh?
@gertvdijk Don't worry. I'm not offended at all. :)

A: How to update BIOS in Dell laptop?

BobbleThe first step is to get information about your current system. In Ubuntu you can check the BIOS version with the following two commands: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date You need information about your computer's hardware when querying the manufacturer's webs...

@BrunoPereira so the solution is to use windows? doesnt sound like a solution to me.
jrg
jrg
face it - BIOS updates almost always require a DOS-based system.
@fossfreedom all others are useless at this point, the rescue cd can be created without actually buying a license, unless someone invents something else that is the answer
@jrg win BIOS upgrades are everywhere! DOS is not the solution now a days
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira sorry, wasn't clear.
Any ways, all answers on that post are useless at this point except that one.
15:44
@BrunoPereira ... new piccy ... looking at what though?
@fossfreedom chick ofc :) (she looks pissed btw)
what? are they saying dell removed the in BIOS way of upgrading firmware?
16:01
@mateo_salta looks like it
@mateo_salta go go, find a way to fix that mess!
ah, looks like they have a bootable flashing CD, in the service manual It shows how to flash from cd, dell.com/support/Manuals/us/en/19/Product/studio-1537
... add that as an answer!
hm, I'll see if I can burn the image with linux. should work.
weird ... I'm still seeing sleighs when folks leave from here!

xmas is never ending here in AU land.

hope so!

hey ... I said when (or if ) you are bored! - thanks :)
seems like you got it set up already :)
16:43

jrg
jrg
17:23
@jokerdino and you use the tumblr for stacktackable stuff, and the wordpress for everything else?
yeah pretty much
using tumblr seems lame now though
stacktack isn't worth using tumblr
there's a stacktack for wordpress!
Yeah, but not for wordpress.com blogs :(
i would have to set up a blog on a new domain and all those stuff
oh oh, right
jrg
jrg
who needs security when you have wordpress? :)
@JorgeCastro still enjoying that octopress blog?
what's it costing you now?
17:34
<3 it
I am debating moving to cloudpress, which has built in s3/cloudfront features
It's like 70 cents a month right now
jrg
jrg
oh cool.
still dirt cheap.
yeah
cloudpress is just octo but with the mods for easily pushing to s3/cloudfront ootb
it's on my todo
unfortunately it looks like octo isn't seeing much work in trunk, I wonder if the guy is just too busy to accept the new branches
jrg
jrg
er, interesting. there are two github repos claiming to be octopress.
github.com/imathis/octopress/issues/928 < filed a issue on the matter.
Fun fact about chat.SE layout: If you add a second line of buttons, the legal footer nearly disappears.
jrg
jrg
fun fact: if you just resize the text box, same thing happens.
17:43
"Screw you, CSS, we be doin' dis oldskool!"
That isn't much of a design choice, though, since text boxes are standardized to be resizable nowadays. :P
But seriously, what's so hard about position: absolute; bottom: 0; right: 0;? And at least not using friggin tables for everything.
Now secbu needs to also fix the positioning on the legal footer ...
hehe
I guess you can answer that ;)
