@AnPel Probably, but your question is rather vague. You mean virtual machine? Host OS? Virtualisation you're using? etc. 99% chance it's already covered by a Q on this site though.
some browsers are not too keen on connecting to localhost/127.0.0.1 as it could be security issue. malware can easily run a simple fake site there and if users aren't really noticing that... you get the point. For Chrome, try putting http:// in front of 127.0.0.1explicitly.
well I'm not sure about the exact reason, but I guess it's security thingy.
Also, in the process of testing why it doesn't work, I added '0.0.0.0 google.com' to my hosts file, and the pointed firefox to google.com, and got the page normally, which got me to think that for some reason firefox ignores hosts file
`127.0.0.1 mylocalsite1.com` `127.0.0.1 othersite.tld` is just wrong afaik. localhost is 127.0.0.0/8 so you should count up. e.g. 127.0.0.2, 127.0.0.3, etc.
OR
127.0.0.1 mylocalsite1.com othersite.tld
in one line
either way, this tutorial is wrong at this. quite sure.
I have a single IP (81.174.66.48) and I would like to use /etc/hosts to associate multiple domains with that IP. Currently my hosts file looks like this:
81.174.66.48 nerto.it nerto
I would like eventlog.it and eventlog.in to also be resolved to 81.174.66.48. I tried making my hosts file lo...
@AnPel I'm quite sure this is the reason. one other thought: if DNS via proxy is enabled for your browser, this will still not work. but don't bother if you're not running a proxy, just try this first.
@AnPel ok. good luck. Leave a comment about the wrong syntax on the tutorial page if it worked for you.
@AnPel and refer to the ServerFault Q I just posted. It's a pretty obvious mistake.
I'm new to userscripts (browser). Using Chrome. Installed the StackApp AutoReview thingy for pro-forma comments. Chrome asked me to confrim installation, clicked OK. It's not listed as browser extension. Where to go from here?
@jrg yeah, well, for me Firefox was utterly painfully slow compared to what I'm used too using a new user profile last week. It's not a slow machine. Quad-core, 24GB RAM. Friend told me it must be the 'smooth scroll' feature I should disable.
i am really skeptical of any machine that isn't a server with more than 8GB of ram. i don't think normal desktop software is designed to run off that type of resources right now...
@jrg I've been running 5x 4GB virtual machines on it for testing MySQL performance thingies. You know. KVM, Puppet, large data sets, etc. SSD with 24GB is a major YEY there.
@gertvdijk If they use the same browser on the same machine, then they have cookies that save their identity. Or they can register after posting but before editing. Or they can submit an edit anonymously and reviewers can try to figure out if it's really from the same person. Or they can have multiple identities that get merged by moderators.
imo, this is too confusing and a big invitation to just bail out on your Q. Moreover, on Ubuntu people are using Live CDs and such, so cookies aren't of any help. It's not SO/SF in that sense.
I have tried everything i found on 1st page of google search(I searched: Install Broadcom BCM43141 on ubuntu) but i am not able to install the wireless drivers please need urgent help
I have a Dell Vostro 3460 with one of the new Broadcom 43142 hybrid Wireless/Bluetooth chips. Neither the proprietary driver (wl) nor the b43 driver supports this.

Speaking of... @jrg I recommend merging Arun and arunan if possible. They're pretty clearly the same user and I doubt s/he prefers to use more than one account to work on the same question.
I use ubuntu 12.04 32bits in virtualbox.
I follow this link

@gertvdijk I have posted a question on serverfault, feels like it belongs there, please, if anyone can help, see here serverfault.com/questions/463282/…
@AnPel nothing hapens.. the moment i click my avatar, i am returned back to my profile... and earlier it was shoen on my profile.. 10 hats... now nothing is there ! :-\
oh... but i strongly believe that all those hats earned by everyone should remain in the profile... they are pritty good to show off to friends... hehe !
thanks for you'r suggestion... one question... how can i put the extract of this chat aswell in my question ?? m kinda new to the community so don't know much bout it.. but still learning !
@Z9iT I suggest to just the regular Blockquote markdown syntax and link to the first transcript line. Click on the triangle before the message and use the 'permalink' for this.
I don't live much on stacknetwork.. most of the time busy with examination.. to emphasize you may put the sentence b/w dobule asterisk like this or use shortcut like ctrl+i or ctrl+b
I believe that the hats are gone ??
Today I opened my profile and noticed that the line declaring how many hats I've earned has disappeared..
As said on winterba.sh that they are available till 4th of jan.. I think that was applicable for hats as a whole.
However I suggest that the hats a user h...
Hello, I did just buy a new domain for my web project, and now I want to add it to my server computer (running ubuntu server). But now when I started to read some help pages and such, I still have no clue how to set it up. Now I did change my primary network interface to use static ip, but I am not sure did I do it correctly.
@Arto Hi there! I believe you're interested in a (basic) IPv4/DNS q&a first. A lot of this is not Ubuntu-specific. I suggest to ask this on Superuser.com
@Arto True! Yet, how to configure a static IP is not off-topic there either. My opinion on this is that you're having a broader networking question.
DNS, virtual hosting, IP configuration, etc. in a home setting really should belong there. If you're having a Ubuntu related question to setting up static IP configuration, then come back here.
Yeh, I am asking is my ip now static when I did change the lines below, iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.100
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
@Arto There we go. A basic non-Ubuntu related IP/DNS question.
These are local IPs (RFC1918), which are useless for 'real domains' you can 'buy'. You need to set up port forwarding on your router where the NAT takes place.
@LuisAlvarado heh. i was just going to point you towards the fact that it was already a comment and eliah thought i should move it to answer. originally...it was a comment
might be worth noting that just because you set it statically on the client end, that doesn't mean the router won't re-allocate it to someone else when the lease is up. you need to know what your dhcp address range is and set the local address outside of that, but inside the routable address space for your presumably home network.
your router won't force an ip on it if you don't ask for one.
Guys, be aware that his question is about an external 'bought' domain and will require an external IP address to work properly. His Ubuntu box only has a local IP due to NAT.

@Arto Oh and check if 192.168.1.100 is not in the space (pool) for addresses being assinged automatically to other devices. You'll get in trouble (IP conflicts) in case your router will happily assign this address to other devices.
Troubleshooting
No IP address obtained!
Your DSL Connection is active but without internet connectivity.
This may be due to wrong PPP identifiers or transient failure and delays in connection setup.
Correct your PPP identifiers, or try again in a few minutes.
@Flimm - You are right about stackexchange being a english only site. It is very difficult for users of other languages that really have to claw their way into learning english just to make a question or answer something.
For me I have to spend several minutes creating a question or answer and double or triple check them to see if they are in english correctly, not to mention that if I want to help somebody in my country it is 0% effective since sharing my questions or answers will only help english users. So I can not get for example votes from people of my country to know if I have helped them since from start they can't read english most of the ones I try to help.
So at the end, I am hoping that somehow, the work I have done here will get to spanish speakers (In my case) in a somewhat spanish askubuntu version.
Between that and new words I have to learn literally everyday from other english users here, well you can see how hard it is for me. It is a good experience to learn english of course (Forcefully) but not much when I want to show an answer or question to a fellow colleague, friend or student.
@LuisAlvarado Quiero recargar un pagina con resultados de mysql. Me han dicho que lo puedo hacer con AJAX, pero no se como instalarlo. Me puedes ayudar con esto?
Remove the media from your PC of which you're running Xubuntu from and reboot.
E.g: If you've tried it from a CD/DVD, remove that from the optical drive. If you put it on a USB flash drive, remove the USB flash drive.
