sleep 1 && xset dpms force off
xset dpms force standby
and
xset dpms force off
but none seems to work for long
any ideas
@Trufa so monitor wakes up again?
@Trufa xlock, then manually press the monitor off button

Hello to all
Hi @Alin
@Takkat are you good with ubuntu ? newbee here
I've got a small isue
what's it?
When I run videos, for instance a youtube video or when I run a movie full screen I get some banding.. some sort like slow refresh on old CRT monitors
running ubuntu x64
@Alin that's called tearing - for google ;). You run Flash?
09:35
@Takkat what do you mean run flash ? I have Adobe flash intalled...
maybe also GPU/driver thing, that depends
@Takkat I have a Geforce 8800GT with 512 RAM card
that should cope with full screen video. Proprietary driver?
I have the driver that came with ubuntu instalation
here is a interesting solution after you mentioned tearing :) omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/01/…
Oli
Oli
At last. Don't think I've lit the entire board up since last year.
09:38
@Alin you'll need the proprietary driver first
@Takkat what does that mean ?
@Oli \o/
@Alin System->Administration->Restricted drivers or so
sits on a XP box at the moment
@Takkat thank you for your help ;) gonna try it
09:42
@Alin you're welcome - good luck!
I've gotta say I've started to really like ubuntu
5
after all those years of Windows
There is only one annoyance I have, flash crashes tabs very often on browser, but I've found that the new 11.0 version fixes this
@Alin Ubuntu will become your best friend - I promise
I guess I'll have to wait a little more for release
@Takkat :) I like the way Eclipse runs and the Android SDK, much more smoother than in Windos
@Alin Upgrade best >4 weeks after release, when worst bugs are fixed
@Alin it's because Ubuntu is the better OS :P
@Takkat :))
@Takkat 11.04 looks interesting
09:52
has to go back to work :(

12:33
Wasn't there a post about answering normal AU questions, and guidelines for what to include etc. (I think it was on Meta - but I'm not seeing it)
compiled Banshee from git \o/
13:03
@Alaukik Uh, my eyes... ouch
13:13
Is it possible to view the ips of the user who logs into my machine using VNC viewer??
13:38
@karthick87 so your machine is the VNC server and someone is accessing it using a viewer?
@Alin I told you that it is awesome. :D
@Takkat Sorry, i fell asleep yesterday, the answer is yes.
@djeikyb Sorry too (fell asleep), the on off button you mean?
@Trufa you said you go to sleep with your computer :D
@Takkat haha I was crazily tired yesterday
@Trufa Here's still today and I'm getting tired here

Q: Screen turns on automatically (xset dpms force off)

crodjerI am using xset dpms force off to manually turn my screen off to save power. However, it turns back on after some time (20 - 40 seconds). Distro: Ubuntu-Lucid Graphics: Intel 4500 MHD Trying steps in this solution (Turning off screensaver or wireless) did not work. Can it be due to an...

There seems a bug there :/
@Takkat thanks!! i'll take a look
@Takkat They python script seems to be a reasonable solution, I will try it out as soon as I'm home again.
Thanks you!
14:00
@Trufa I'm not so sure about reasonable. A python loop - ahrg...
@OctavianDamiean yeah ofcourse.
@Takkat ok, poor choice of words, do you think it might be a bad idea?
at least it may work ;)

we're ~30 questions away from breaking 10k, the first non-trilogy stackexchange to do so!

@JorgeCastro Wahoo! We'll hit it today for sure!
Awesome - I've got a few questions to ask too!
Hey congrats to you guys!!
Well done!

1 hour later…
16:01
@Alvar I have bought a new one. I mentioned that already. I am waiting for it to get here to Japan in the mail. While I'm waiting I want to do which should be a whole lot easier on my PPC machine
16:22
I am such a skilled troll :)
@MarcoCeppi any idea what's up with this?

A: Ubuntu updated and now the option to boot into Windows XP is missing

Geppettvs D'ConstanzoWell, I have faced this issue in the past, just a couple of times. And my friends in the Israel Remix Team distro gave me this trick which worked pretty fine in my case. You give it a try, may be will also help you. First of all, let's open the System/Administration/Startup Manager, which will r...

@JorgeCastro Not sure?
@RolandTaylor Wonder if we'll get a new version if we all troll their forums... ;)
16:43
ugh dude, really, the guy is doing that to other pics now
@Jorge: You mean the ugly watermark?
^--- a PPA for JetServer stuff - with daily build recipes.
@JorgeCastro Oh, the watermark.
I'll start a meta thread.
@Marco: Do you think we should disallow it or just discourage it?
I will atleast be discouraging it - it looks stupid. You didn't do anything but screen capture something.
It's not like YOU designed that panel
@GeorgeEdison discourage
16:49
I want SE to weigh in on it though
@JamesGifford I hope so
@MarcoCeppi Done.
Brought it up you-know-where.
plus
if we want to reuse the content, say for SOWhat
or something else
we'd need permission from that person right?

Q: Watermarking images in posts

Marco CeppiShould this be an accepted practice? It seems more obtrusive and annoying then anything else. Here are examples: Ubuntu updated and now the option to boot into Windows XP is missing Recording output while listening to it For me, if you didn't design the contents of the screenshot - it's not re...

I say just leave it all CC-BY-SA
16:53
Yeah, but can you really claim "Copyright" over that?
@JorgeCastro SOWhat...? Wow.. that's old :) But thanks for remembering it.
<3
I always remember. :)
2
Are you referring to the data dump viewer?
just claim it harms kittens
(not a real reason - but a good way of saying "this is ethically wrong in our community")
16:57
@JorgeCastro That's called SEBrowser (or AUBrowser on LP).
2 mins ago, by Jorge Castro
I always remember. :)

This guys' batting a 1k
> Dare to post your own question. Don't drop useless "reviews" on mine. Thank you!
@RolandTaylor I'm hopeful. I lose it every few weeks and go on a Twitter rantage about Skype Linux. :P
someone went and edited out that thing from all his answers
Oh, wow - that was in his answers?
@MarcoCeppi What was?
17:01
@GeorgeEdison 5 messages ^
This one seems unaffected: askubuntu.com/questions/28108/…
Is he just doing it to new answers?
@MarcoCeppi Yes. @stefanopalazzo was talking about it a few days ago.
Yeah, it's only his two newest answsers
apparently he really took it to heart when I comment ed to say I don't use skype (which was not personal)
17:02
@JamesGifford Must have been during my once a month sleep cycle :P
askubuntu.com/posts/31207/revisions - look at the revisions of most of his most recent answers.
I also get a "language barrier" vibe
I'm not, but I've been known to be wrong. That's why I'm not a mod. :P
What...? Lucid doesn't have Qt 4.7?
@GeorgeEdison Surprise!
17:07
No wonder my builds are failing for Lucid.
Okay, Lucid does not support JetServer then.
Er,... I mean the opposite :)
@GeorgeEdison It's okay, in another year there will be a new LTS - half way there!
Isn't Natty LTS?
@JorgeCastro Do you think we should run a banner for beta? Similar to what we did in Alpha?
@GeorgeEdison Nope - 12.04 is the next LTS - LTS releases are every 2 years
@MarcoCeppi Oh... that's not good (that no LTS is supported).
But what can I do if they don't backport Qt 4.7... :P
@MarcoCeppi sure
maybe a more welcoming one
@MarcoCeppi I don't think the guy is being intentionally weird or anything, I think he just thinks it's like a forum and not like a wiki
like, who wouldn't want people fixing your answers for you!
17:19
@JorgeCastro Right, I don't think so either. That's why I think there is an understanding /language barrier that things aren't being translated properly
hahahaha
haha ewwww. ;)
LOL!
@Marco: I know where you found that :)
@MarcoCeppi o.o
@GeorgeEdison Couldn't resist :D
17:46
dang it, broke the tail rotor to my new helicopter
@JorgeCastro What kind of 'copter did you get?
epic looking!
it's so fun
Wow, cheap too. Tempted to order one
17:48
yeah that's why I got it
the guys at the local hackerspace are going to set up races, etc
it's easy to fly, so much fun
comes with spare parts too
and I guess they're modular so people hotrod them
but I've only had it a week
epic, going to get a few for the office
Those mini heli's are GREAT fun
Whoa the chat interface is grey now?
@lazyPower Is it?
@lazyPower is it?
It certain is for me.
18:02
Looking orange here.
interesting, perhaps i should restart my browser...
brb
@lazyPower Maybe you're color blind?
Came back as orange on restarting the browser
Odd... must have been a left-over session issue. I dont reboot this lappy terribly often, sleep is a wonderful thing.
What's this reboot? #Sarcasm
` 14:05:26 up 3:47`
18:06
I had to reboot this morning - compiz was being all nice and stable.
18:29
Is there an option to specify the start frame using ffmpeg? my google-fu is weak today
@lazyPower should be -timecode_frame_start
@StefanoPalazzo interesting, its respecting the option on the second image, but the first output image is always at position/frame 1 which is a black photo :|
@lazyPower huh, strange. I just found that on some random website
might be outdated
@StefanoPalazzo thanks anyway mate :) i'll keep plugging
@lazyPower if nothing works, you can always use openshot or pitivi
18:37
Not an option, its being hosted on a win2k8 server. I need this to be available via a proc() call.
ah, it appears that using the -ss option with an absolute time-code value. eg: 00:00:07
so i dont have to specify the frame, it supports passing it the value of the spec. start time. and couple that with a -vframes option of just 1 it'll give me a single-shot of that specified time in the video timeline.
just fyi, incase anybody else wondered.... wanders back to his corner
the ffmpeg man page is impressively huge
Its a jack of all trades application. I discovered a drop through stack overflow of someone using it in asp.net, which is what gave me the idea to use it to snag a screen-capture of the video for my application.
18:56
Whee... removing bad tags. Singletons and bad plural synonyms.
Is 'gnome-keyring' different from 'seahorse' ?
@jgbelacqua yes pretty sure
@MarcoCeppi thanks. Both are gnome keyring things, but beyond that I don't know.

Q: I've setup SSH Key login, but want to avoid passphrase

Diego GarciaHi I've set my passwordless login to a friend's computer and everything works very well. Even i edited my ~/.ssh/config for adding his hostname and my username. So I just type ssh friend and it connects... but every time I logout and I do that it ask again for my passphrase. There's a way to avo...

Q: How keep seahorse from asking a passphrase?

SimónI've created one RSA key (with passphrase) to access my remote server via ssh with key. I've added it to seahorse with ssh-add. I would like avoid having seahorse ask me for the passphrase every login. Is there any way to disable this? Or to enter it forever? Or to have one one user given trust...

Trying to make sure these aren't duplicates....

Hi
helloooo
I've mastered the style of insanity :D
@JorgeCastro I see that uds sponsorship closes today, how long do you think it may be before we find out about it?
Dupe alert ... (I think)
19:26
Curious to hear how others are adapting to Unity -- I'm getting used to it, but w/o the gnome 2.x taskbar, I miss being able to see & click on background or minimized windows. Any ideas for dealing w/ that?

Q: Titlebars and borders sometimes missing

LolwhitesSometimes, when I log in, windows have no borders or titlebars. I can get them back by stopping and restarting Compiz, but it would obviously be nicer not to have to. I have an ATI graphics card and am running 10.10, but have had the same problem in earlier distros.

@jasonbrooks You can click on the background.
@jasonbrooks As for the minimized windows, I've just learned to do without.
@JamesGifford I mean, I'm running firefox, it's maximized, the downloads window is in the background, because a download is going on. I'm accustomed to opening that in-the-background window from the taskbar
sounds like a good reason for me to stay with the classic desktop
It's the missing info in my desktop environment that I'm feeling -- or do I have an editor window open already? I have to keep that in mind, because there's no cue to see
19:30
Classic never goes out of style. (Until it won't run on your hardware.)
@jasonbrooks Ah. I'm a keyboard shortcut ninja, so I'm just used to hitting Alt-tab to switch between windows. Or storing them in a separate workspace.
I've been running classic mostly, but I want to give this a chance
I haven't had time to get comfortable in Unity -- keep getting too busy and moving back into the familiar.
@jasonbrooks Good man.
@JamesGifford I do alt-tab, but that can mean several clicks instead of one -- seems like moving backward in terms of usability
Also, I miss my CPU monitor!! :)
I just never minimize anything. When I need more space just add another virtual desktop
19:32
I can't really complain too much about unity yet, as I haven't used it :)
@MarcoCeppi how do you add -- there appear to be only four
@jasonbrooks Each to their own - you'll be able to switch back and forth between Unity and the normal GNOME 2 stack.
@jasonbrooks Oh, I'm not using Unity - still only have 10.10 :)
@jasonbrooks install ccsm - that's how you configure unity
Hi all
19:34
@JamesGifford I'll try that -- it's funny, I've been avoiding compiz for years -- I've never understood the value prop there. I'll explore ccsm
@jasonbrooks Compiz is a funny beast, particularly on 11.04. I'll send you a link to how to add more workspaces.
@JamesGifford Looking at your screenshot -- have you added applets to the whitelist for the notification area?
@jasonbrooks I added dropbox and shutter - everything else is indicator-applet ready.
@JamesGifford what package is the cpu monitor?
@jasonbrooks it's the indicator-cpu package. It's in a PPA.

A: List of Appindicators

AllanAn Indication of Indicators Ok not long ago there was a post at omgubuntu.co.uk listing as many of the third party indicators as they could find at the time. I will bring over that list and add more as and when they become available. The majority of these Indicators use ppa's for distribution yo...

19:39
@JamesGifford cool, thanks
@jasonbrooks Ignore that first post - it's for the old mutter based unity, not the compiz based unity.
@jasonbrooks you're welcome. :)
allo @Takkat
hi @lazyPower still lazy?
@Takkat some things will never change, sir. :)
@lazyPower great :)
19:45
@jasonbrooks not finding the post. :(
@jasonbrooks ccsm is already installed in 11.04. Go to the me menu: System Settings:
I'm estimating 3-4 hours before we hit 10K questions.
we were so close lastnight, still havent hit 10k?
@lazyPower 5 hours ago we were about 30 away, since then we've had about 15.
it's 1 Q / 30 min right now. So still 9-10 h to go
unless all of a sudden many people ask their 10k question at the same time
19:56
Things speed up as the evening here in the US starts to set in, and people start getting home from work.
true that
school age individuals should be hitting the boards in circa an hour.
