@User1986 Have a look also at Raiders of the Lost Downboat, the decor is the same :)

1 hour later…
3:12 AM
IIRC its by parent site

4:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek The look of the Chat room?

yup
which is why sci fi and fantasy have a dark theme
the scamps :D

It does look a little daggy here but it serves a purpose.

4:44 AM
I have a soft spot still for IRC but I understand the need on SE to use a web based chat...
And IRC has not exactly grown for a while :(

5:21 AM
@andrew.46 Well - in the 'old days' chat was fairly easy to find
and it very much is IRC +
You don't need a seperate client, it does SSO and most sites linked to their main room from the front page/top bar

@JourneymanGeek I gather the link to chat and Meta is a little harder to find in newer times?

@andrew.46 2 clicks deep
IF you know its in the SE/Hamburger menu
it literally used to be front and center

@JourneymanGeek That defeats the attention / interest levels of many users I guess

Quite a few sites also lost a lot of 'core' users over community drama, and its hard to get replacements if people can't find it
@andrew.46 There's two VERY important things I wish SE would work on
what Adam Savage calls "First Order Retrivability"

From MythBusters?

5:26 AM
If its there, people will go there
yup
the second thing is - critical mass for chat matters

'First-order retrievability: have your tools available, and don’t have any other tools in the way.'
@JourneymanGeek I don't catch your meaning there?

@andrew.46 if people find it and use it, chat will be vibrant
and when there's drama, and people leave, chat dies
and we've had a few cases of that - and chat itself needs curation and management of the community
Mods can do that but that sometimes needs support too

@JourneymanGeek On AU I confess that I have personally focused on Raiders of the Lost Downboat, and that Community is doing well. Here not so much...

Hmmm.... well as usual you have made excellent points. @Zanna and I can get things moving along here a bit more, I tend to have free time these days and an interest in bringing chat back to life.
@JourneymanGeek Of course easier accessibility from the main page would make things easier but that is something not in our control.

5:39 AM
@andrew.46 well no
and there's quite a few things where the (vocal part of the) core community and what the company wants to do diverge

6:07 AM
@andrew.46 such an Aussie phrase :D

@Zanna Strewth it looks daggy, mate :)

@andrew.46 Good mods is part of it, but a significant part is having the community flow through
a lot of the ex SE communities wandered off/started off site chats, for example
and where they stick together (like the alternative Super User/Root Access) chat, they're active

@JourneymanGeek What do you mean by off site chats?

@andrew.46 literally the whole community on chat moving off to slack, discord or matrix for some reason or another
either cause of drama here, unhappiness with how things are managed and so on

OIC.
I have seen some tension here of course...

6:20 AM
yup

@Zanna If you ever look up 'daggy' you will see it is originally a slightly unpleasant term relating to sheep :(

Occationally involves staff too, which is unfun
On the other hand, you're here so at the very least you know what's happening and over time, have a handle on it cause people trust you

@JourneymanGeek Reminds me of my work as a Clinical Nurse Educator in Intensive Care where the same principles applied to the people I was training to become good ICU nurses :)

6:49 AM
@andrew.46 etymonline does not even list it
the nearest thing is "dagga"
is this a dagga I see before me?
@JourneymanGeek indeed, the value of just being present is not to be underestimated!

@Zanna Depends on whether you stabbed someone, or if the dagger is happy.

@Zanna Sheep are prone to get dried poo in the wool around their bottoms, these encrusted combinations of wool and poo are known as dags. The use of the term in modern terms is actually quite affectionate, believe it or not :)
Dag is an Australian and New Zealand slang term, also daggy (adjective). In Australia, it is often used as an affectionate insult for someone who is, or is perceived to be, unfashionable, lacking self-consciousness about their appearance and/or with poor social skills yet affable and amusing. It is also used to describe an amusing, quirky and likeable person (as in, "He's a bit of a dag") and is non-pejorative. The term was more widely used in the 1970s due to the popular New Zealand comedy of Fred Dagg (John Clarke). The term may be simply affectionate, such as when it was used to describe the...
Perhaps we are moving too far from Ubuntu now :)
Well, I guess it is just me :)

7:11 AM
And thank you for your words here @JourneymanGeek! Time for me to log off for the night...

6 hours later…
1:21 PM
@andrew.46 lol "you crusty woolly old poo"
@andrew.46 this room is not known for its adherence to its description XD

3 hours later…
4:20 PM
man I need sunshine.

if only I could pack some for you...

That would be nice. : D

4:55 PM
@Rinzwind Cataracts all cleared up? Assuming they did some other vision adjustment while they were at it?
@JourneymanGeek Mmm. Hamburger ... Hungry now.
@Rinzwind Also guessing they only did one eye - Was that the first or the second?

I've made a new Q&A, trying to clear up some confusion about ESM Apps, Universe and Ubuntu Pro..
0
Q: Whats is ESM Apps, and how does it relate to Ubuntu Pro?

Artur MeinildLately, there has been some questions mentioning ESM Apps, that seem to have caused some confusion among myself and others (one example). It seems there is a relation between ESM Apps, the Universe repository, and an Ubuntu Pro subscription. But what exactly is ESM Apps, and how are the above rel...

Please let me know if you have ideas for improvement. 😎
