Hi,

I'm wondering why I often get -2 downvotes when I'm asking questions regarding Cinnamon or GUI software alternatives to the terminal commands?

I used the official Ubuntu sources until now concerning all my requests. I can assume it's supported, since I use the Ubuntu server LTS version as the base system.

I'm a desktop-environment user. I'm not a programmer. I rather prefer visual information as text in general. I also provide support for users that have no experience at all with computers. I would like to recommend them to choose Ubuntu instead of Windows. But those users will not a

Can you help regarding this question /solution askubuntu.com/questions/1038878/ping-hangs-and-ssh-times-out
I don't understand what he did

@EnthusiastiC ... its the denvercoder situation
> Alright, forget it. I didn't check my VM's ip. Suddenly, it changed to another ip I don't know why. Checking ifconfig in VM gave me the right ip address.
OP was pinging the wrong place

@JourneymanGeek because I have the same issue except that mine is related to my real ubuntu machine
I don't know what s going wrong with it

He didn't do anything, he found out there was a different IP

I could not ping external websites
How to check if I had wrong ip

ip addr
assuming you know your ip range

Lots of settings is confusing

also traceroute is your friend here

12:07 PM
First I see two different interfaces
wlp1s0 and wg0-client

But I think k wg0-client refers to virtual,

the first is wireless, the second is wireguard

Is says pointtopoint

If you set up wireguard incorrectly, that would explain why you have no networking

12:10 PM
My network was going good even after configuration of vpns
The point where I lost is

dosen't mean the VPN is still working - but yeah, its a different situation at this point

When I tried to configure TP link outdoor

wait
TPlink outdoor?

I used gui to fix ip
Yeah

'fix ip' hm

12:11 PM
I followed the pdf guided
I mean static ip

you don't 'generally' use a static IP with wireless - and I wouldn't recommend it until you have everything else sorted out

Static ethernet ip addr

Yeah, you really need to ask a question and make sure all the informations there in one place
where did ethernet come in here?

From the network gui of Ubuntu. What I remember I did was setting a static ip addr of ethernet 192.168.0.10 255.255.255.0 as mask and 192.168.1.1 as gateway

yeah - but that's not always the 'right' gateway or free range for static IPs

12:16 PM
I doubt that caused my issue
I don't have more knowledge about networking. I have kali installed, Windows and blackarch
Otherwise I could compare settings to resolve this issue
On s there a way,I could reset "everything"

just turn it back to dynamic
or connect with windows , check settings and go back

And that's what I did
And that what seemed weird to me
Event though the issue is persistent
I played alot with ip route
Is there a way using recovery mode to reset setting back to their default

wow full house today here :D

@Rinzwind Hoping everything goes (or went) well today with the cataract surgery.
@Wingarmac I see you just deleted it.
Was just taking a look at it.

Since I posted it on Askubuntu and the question was more related to Linux generaly I moved it here:
https://superuser.com/questions/1764216/search-for-installed-applications-execution-path

@Wingarmac Oh dang
@Wingarmac Definitely will be closed there ... quickly :-/
Super User doesn't allow software recommendation questions, but we do
But some people here still don't like them ...
Probably why the downvote. But this just came up in Meta in the last day or so, and @Zanna mentioned that well-written, bound questions (which I think yours was) are on topic ...

A: Is it allowed to ask for software advice?

ZannaSoftware recommendation questions are fine here; we just ask that they be sufficiently specific and detailed. For example, there could be a brief description of the use case or of the features required. You have included sufficient detail in your question here about what you need the software to ...

user498038
I don't know if there's matter to recommend anything. I searched a lot to find one. Obviously there should not be a lot of choice.

Right - Don't know. But I'd get that question of Super User, at least ... ;-)
Oh, wait
Just looking at the SU version

@NotTheDr01ds Our site actually kinda caused the underlying rule for that

2:22 PM
@JourneymanGeek Right!
These many years ago, from what I've read on Meta and blog posts

and created the semi workaround - of asking about a problem without explicit requirements for a software rec

@JourneymanGeek Agreed, which it looks like the SU version of @Wingarmac's question fulfils.

user498038
I would also like to have a list with all the applications that can do it. So I can choose for myself, In this case, no recommendation is done.

If it had been posted as the AU version, it would have appeared as a SW Recommendations one.
@Wingarmac Err, not quite ... It would still be asking for a "list" which would count on SU as a software recommendation question, I believe.

user498038
The way we explain the thing could also be interpretted. "I do it with..." - "I recommend you to do it with ..." are clearly different statements.

2:25 PM
But perfectly acceptable here on AU, as long as it lists the criteria you are looking for.

@Wingarmac Its not 'as' active as AU or SU but software recs is 'ok' with lists with individual recs

Could you suggest what settings I should copy because ping works perfectly fine on recovery mode

user498038
Thank you all!
I think I understand the situation better. From my point of view, these are all Linux software. But that is not the case of who made it and its reputation. So there are rules for remaining unbiased that I don't consider.

It would be fine to know why we get a downvote. It's not always obvious.
When I do it, I try to explain why, or the reason is already mentioned by someone else.

user498038
This way I can prevent repeating the problem
