@Kulfy Correct. So remember us lowlifes when you become the CEO...
@Zanna You should introduce me because my idea of good food is food cooked by me...
(warn your mum that I cook without a single grain of salt though)

3 hours later…
3:50 AM
she can always add salt I guess

7 hours later…
11:31 AM
@Fabby Long way to go. By the way, how are you? It's been a while since I saw you here

1 hour later…
12:46 PM
@Kulfy Ah that's where the beep came from!
:D
I'm OK, short-term gig and I asked a question over at U&L and got downvoted immediately!
Nothing has changed while I was away!
>:-)

@BeastOfCaerbannog definitely
@BeastOfCaerbannog hahaha love that song
reminds me of school discos hahaha
is it just me or has everything gone downhill since the '80s XD

lol
@Zanna you sound like an old person
@Fabby there's a terrible pun there that only tamil speakers would get...
your food is O(U)ppilathatu....

@JourneymanGeek I don't get it...
Please elaborate?

@Fabby the words for peerless (oppilathatu) and lacking salt (uppilathathu) sound similar

Oh! Interesting.
@JourneymanGeek So: "Saltless cooks are peerless" sounds like the absolute truth in Tamil?

@Fabby vaaaaguely
But its a very highbrow pun, insofar as such a thing exists

3:24 PM
Word-humour always is...
And it's difficult to understand if you do speak the language, so impossible to understand if you have no clue about the language...
@JourneymanGeek EG in French: "A green worm goes towards a green glass made out of squirrelfur"

@Fabby and I think maybe 3-4 people here get tamil, and I only know it cause of the wordplay in the name of a goddess...

@Fabby Gosh!!! Otherwise SE would look like an alien to you, I believe ;-)

@JourneymanGeek Sorry, got distracted, so when you pronounce that in French, it sounds like
ilia un ver ver qui va ver un ver en ver
But it's written: Il y a un vers vert qui va vers un verre en vaire.
So like Mandarin and Cantonese: you have to write it down to understand it, but with 2 people speaking Mandarin...

@Fabby in this case, you probaby also need the context

French is hard! (but the spelling is easier than English: that's just a total utter nightmare!)

3:30 PM
of saltless food, and cooking.

Ah, there's more to it??? Please explain...

oh that they sound the same
and we're talking about it

:D

@LandonZeKepitelOfGreytBritn If you haven't already, those sound like good questions for Stack Overflow. I'd recommend splitting them out, though, into multiple questions (perhaps not all at once). Also would recommending trying to provide a MRE as much as possible.
Completely unrelated to that question, here's a question here on AU that bugs me:

Q: How to separate different data values in a list and assign to variables in a shell script?

MissBraeLet's say I have a list of data in a shell script like this: DataList = [" Cat Dog Rabbit GuineaPig Hamster "] Now, how I would I go about setting each separate data value in the list as a variable? Like this: $Value0 = "Cat" $Valu1 = "Dog" $Value2 = "Rabbit" $Value3 = "GuineaPig" $Value4 = "Ham...

The poster says they can handle translating any answer from Bash, Posix, etc. to Fish, but then shows a complete lack of understanding of shell programming whatsoever in the comments. Rejected someone else's answer that would almost certainly do what they needed. At least commented on my answer that it was exactly what they needed, but hasn't marked it Accepted ...
Also an XY question, for that matter.

I have installed Ubuntu 20.04, done a number of configurations and installed a lot of applications (GIMP, Geany, KDENLIVE, etc). I want to create an installable USB (or DVD) with a current image of my system. Then if I need to reinstall (from scratch), I can install from the installable USB (or DVD) and be back to where I am now.

4:58 PM
@NotTheDr01ds it seems that you forgot to add something you wanted. "However since you added"

5:37 PM
@BeastOfCaerbannog I'm confused -- I don't see anywhere that I said that?

6:15 PM
@user86288 Check out this question. It's quite old, but there's a comment from just a couple of weeks ago at the top mentioning success with a few different programs (and a link to a blog post).
Personally, I use Ansible, but that's probably overkill for most. I can tear down and spin up a new system with all my configuration in a matter of minutes.
But it does require putting the configuration in Ansible's "code". Known as Infrastructure as Code.
Then I just push my code/configuration to a private Github repo that I can version and get back to when I need to rebuild.

@user86288 Remastersys used to be the perfect tool for that. Its kinda been in limbo for ages...

6:40 PM
@NotTheDr01ds it's at the bottom of your answer
Actually it's "However, since you" instead of what I wrote above.

@BeastOfCaerbannog Ah, thank you. Deleted it. I started to add some info on record parsing, but figured that if the user already had what they wanted, then it wasn't necessary. I must have hit Submit accidentally.
Also moved the "record parsing" info to a comment on jpbrain's answer, since IMHO that was a valid answer that the OP discounted.
@JourneymanGeek Agreed. I think the "easy" approach is probably the best for most people. Back up the package list, and back up any configuration from /etc, /home`.

@NotTheDr01ds got certain values of easy 😁

True enough

7:11 PM
But its also the first step to setting up a config manager...
which is something I probably should do
I run too much wierd stuff :D
