@LandonZeKepitelOfGreytBritn If you haven't already, those sound like good questions for Stack Overflow. I'd recommend splitting them out, though, into multiple questions (perhaps not all at once). Also would recommending trying to provide a MRE as much as possible.

Completely unrelated to that question, here's a question here on AU that bugs me:

The poster says they can handle translating any answer from Bash, Posix, etc. to Fish, but then shows a complete lack of understanding of shell programming whatsoever in the comments. Rejected someone else's answer that would almost certainly do what they needed. At least commented on my answer that it was exactly what they needed, but hasn't marked it Accepted ...

Also an XY question, for that matter.

I have installed Ubuntu 20.04, done a number of configurations and installed a lot of applications (GIMP, Geany, KDENLIVE, etc). I want to create an installable USB (or DVD) with a current image of my system. Then if I need to reinstall (from scratch), I can install from the installable USB (or DVD) and be back to where I am now.

@user86288 Check out this question. It's quite old, but there's a comment from just a couple of weeks ago at the top mentioning success with a few different programs (and a link to a blog post).

Personally, I use Ansible, but that's probably overkill for most. I can tear down and spin up a new system with all my configuration in a matter of minutes.

But it does require putting the configuration in Ansible's "code". Known as Infrastructure as Code.

Then I just push my code/configuration to a private Github repo that I can version and get back to when I need to rebuild.

@BeastOfCaerbannog Ah, thank you. Deleted it. I started to add some info on record parsing, but figured that if the user already had what they wanted, then it wasn't necessary. I must have hit Submit accidentally.

Also moved the "record parsing" info to a comment on jpbrain's answer, since IMHO that was a valid answer that the OP discounted.

@JourneymanGeek Agreed. I think the "easy" approach is probably the best for most people. Back up the package list, and back up any configuration from /etc, /home`.
