Q: We need a central list of canonical answers or best answers for oft-seen question

SirCharlo Possible Duplicate: What are common canonical questions for our site? When a user posts a question about, for instance, Ubuntu freezing, it would be useful to have a page that list the most common questions, and the answers that should be linked to. So under "Freezing", there would be...

14:03
great
@jrg I'm there
now everyone can see that i dont search before posting rolleyes
it's ok, the search sucks anyway
3
dupes just help the wording on the search, so bonus!
jrg
jrg
Amen to that one
14:07
@SirCharlo i wrote a script for that. see the link in the comment
Any Chinese speaking people in here? I need a translation
people look at me like i'm speaking chinese all the time... but no
@aking1012 welcome to the club
hey speaking of canonical questions
@SirCharlo like how to install java!
28
Q: How do I install Java?

JayHow do I install Java and also in my browser so websites with Java work?

14:12
@SirCharlo do you have close votes? I am out.
@jokerdino do you use the Wallch Albums?
@JorgeCastro I do
I would use google translate but it is an image :<
14:14
ive got a chinese coworker..
@rlemon there is software that extracts text from image
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK HOW DID YOU FIND THAT?!
@hakermania but Chinese text?
@RolandTaylor why not?
@hakermania ocr has to be specific to the characters being used
For example, there is hocr - for Hebrew
14:17
@RolandTaylor there should also be something for chinese. 1/7 of the world speaks chinese

Q: Allowing write access to an SMB mounted drive

Mike WillsFollowing this guide I was able to get my Samba share to mount on my Ubuntu 12.04 system. I can navigate the folders just fine. However I cannot create a directory nor create a file. I get the following error: mkdir: cannot create directory `ServerBackups': Permission denied Looking at the ...

@hakermania that's why I'm asking you if the software you are referring to does Chinese text
@RolandTaylor I'm not referring to something specific. i just know that there is software out there that can extract text from image
theres whatthefont
but that not really what youre looking for
@hakermania what exactly is that?
@SirCharlo eeeh :P
14:20
@jokerdino :)
@jokerdino I'm not referring to something specific google.com/…
@hakermania the wallch album thingie?
So, you just refer people to non-specific things :P?
@RolandTaylor don't ever question the greek logic. Never ever ever.
that was a joke. no offense
@jokerdino oh, sorry, I was buffed :/ Look under 'File' menu at wallch. It saves your pictures as a file. And, once saved, you can repoen it with wallch and the corresponding images will show up
14:22
oh
i never knew such a thing
@jokerdino lol
@MarcoCeppi it wasn't me, trust me! I'm innocent!
@MarcoCeppi omg reddit <3
@jokerdino anyway, I would like to ask you if you want this feature removed?
14:25
@hakermania ok explain what this feature does. i never used it and can possibly live without it
@MarcoCeppi (i wanted some karma on reddit :'( )
@hakermania you made wallch?
@RolandTaylor the biggest part of it
@RolandTaylor he co-develops
@hakermania no, you co-delevop.
14:26
Who is the other developer?
oh okay
I didn't know you guys had made it
what the actual ... duck?
or did you guys take it over?
@RolandTaylor jokerdino lies :P
14:27
@RolandTaylor Leon Vitanos actually :P
@jokerdino I knew something didn't feel right :D
@hakermania dino*
@RolandTaylor well, was waiting for haker's response
@RolandTaylor Of course something did feel right, 1 min before he said that he didn't know what a wallch album is
btw MightyPeachy went to sleep?
@hakermania oh fail me. now explain what it does
14:28
@hakermania I was thinking maybe he had just joined or something but it still didn't feel right lol
well, haker did the formatjunkie too
been stalking following him since a long time
I don't know Formatjunkie
@jokerdino when you save your list as a wallch album, you can recover it with loading that file. For example, you can have the files summer.wallch, happy.wallch, sad.wallch, winter.wallch, anniversary.wallch and each of them to have different pictures 'in them'. once loaded with wallch those pictures come up
@RolandTaylor Format Junkie is (still) a small and quite simple program for converting audio, video & images (A wannabe windows Format Factory alternative)
@hakermania hm but i can't select a list. i can only select a single image etc
@MarcoCeppi hey
434
questions
Showing greatest hits with participation from:
Jorge Castro
AWWWW YEAH ....
14:31
haha, epic
@hakermania oh now I remember
i can't shout show off. Because he deserves it :/
I had seen it on a list of apps for the app show down
@jokerdino load your pictures in wallch and under 'File' menu you can save them as wallch album. It is simple.
@RolandTaylor yeah, we participated at the showdown with this app, didn't win anything, though (picsaw hater here :D)
waiting for the community vote results...
@hakermania no soliciting here. :P
@hakermania simple?
i cleared my album, went to file and added a folder. then what?
14:33
@jokerdino go to File and choose to save as wallch album
@hakermania trust me, I'm not a fan of how the show down went down either
ok done.
I think the winners were ridiculous choices
An RSS reader that non-Google-reader users can't use? Seriously?!
@hakermania i then clear it and select another folder and create a new album?
@jokerdino now you can choose a different list and save it as a wallch album. You can load these albums anytime
@jokerdino yeah that's all
14:34
@RolandTaylor who doesn't use google?
@RolandTaylor I know... I was crying rivers (LOL)
@hakermania cry me a river.. later.
@jokerdino i think he meant that RSS feeds that are non-google become useless for
@hakermania i keep clearing and creating a new album?
@jokerdino create as albums as you wish :P
14:35
@hakermania well, i see the feature.
but it is too clumsy
@jokerdino I don't use google-reader
yes and similarly other apps have limitations on their own
like i dont use xkcd, i don't have a network of computers, i dont want to convert music etc
@jokerdino what can be done to improve the feature?
yeah but that's not just a regular limitation...
You make an application to read RSS feeds, but only certain users can?
That's not useful.
@hakermania maybe i should be able to select the images instead of having to clear the whole thing
@RolandTaylor yeah but it is a subjective decision.
14:37
It's not like if you make an xkcd reader - because that can't limit anyone.
You either read it or you don't.
while IMO the rss reader loses on the scratch the itch factor, i don't think it was a terribly useless software
But - anyone can read RSS feeds - just not everyone is going to rely on Google Reader for it.
I don't think it was terribly useful either...
You could just read in a web browser.
it was useful for those who wanted it.
or at least the judges
i am neither against or for the winners.
I'm not really against, I'm just disappointed.
i liked some of the apps like formatjunkie, myagenda and was glad there was a showdown
14:40
I was glad too, but come on, did lightread scratched an itch? Innovation?
neither.
Where is that fairisfair blog post...
@RolandTaylor ok tmrw this time duel to settle the matter :P
It was a total copy of reederapp.com/mac/screens
@hakermania i said it loses on that matter.
we already had/have an rss reader
@hakermania right. i don't belong to mac
I think lightread is awesome
14:41
@jokerdino I have weapons you've never dreamed of
Jorge's vote is just too damn high
@RolandTaylor only nighthawker
I'm not saying it's a bad application - because it's not,
well, i think the majority of the judges use google reader and liked the app and they chose it?
14:41
I'm just saying that in all fairness, it really did not deserve a top spot in the showdown.
@JorgeCastro it is not a bad application, it simply does not fulfill the criteria
@jokerdino biased.
@RolandTaylor which competition doesn't?
you would vote for something you like.
14:42
@hakermania that could be why it won. copying mac apps for ubuntu seems a good way to get ubuntu fanatics backing you no?!?
@jokerdino that's why competitions come with multiple judges.
@jokerdino the criteria were specific, though: developer.ubuntu.com/showdown/rules
@aking1012 you forgot /snark
or /troll
I think that the UI looks awesome is innovative, at least for ubuntu apps anyway. :-/
@RolandTaylor i was serious
14:43
@aking1012 lol :P
@RolandTaylor well so?
@hakermania actually i was more against the picsaw than the lightread
@jokerdino so that you avoid strong bias
@jokerdino me too
@jokerdino don't get me started on that
@RolandTaylor you still have bias.
ok what won the other price?
ah fogger.
that was a nice app.
useful for many people.
14:44
I could go with that
The other 2, no
unless you are on a server, etc
That's why the showdown was for the Desktop :P
@hakermania btw, if you guys are removing the album feature, i would be fine.
@RolandTaylor yep :P
In any case, that fair things blog hits the nail on the head to me.
izx
izx
@jokerdino: someone from your school?
have 100 Systems in the local network with Net connection to all of them. My issue i want to know which system accessing the Internet because they supposed to LAB work not use Internet . I can remove the Internet connection
:P
14:45
Example @jokerdino:
@jokerdino aren't you against of removing features? What about a user that uses this? He will be left without it
@izx holy
First of all, the administrator of OMG!Ubuntu, which is a very nice site in general (no irony here, I am a fan), was one of the judges of this contest. From the very first week he promoted specific applications from the contest. The truth is, that, while he posted about many applications, he clearly focused on 2 specific ones: LightRead and Fogger, which are pretty good applications, if you want my opinion. The first unacceptable thing here, is a judge to publicly express his opinion at the very first week of the contest. This results to the following things: a) Affect the opinion of the ot
@RolandTaylor new idea. let's put together a group of programmers to clone everything in the mac app store for ubuntu...but you have to use a cross-platform kit so it works on iOS, android, and windows too ;)
@aking1012 >:}
We will need to use Objective-Python
14:46
@hakermania well, where is your co-developer? you guys need to improve the feature. it isn't likable to me.
:P (it doesn't exist but it will so we are more Mac friendly)
@jokerdino suggest things
@jokerdino you are one user o_o
@jokerdino we are currently fighting for it. I say that it has to stay and he says that it has to be gone
@RolandTaylor kivy packages for iOS
14:47
@hakermania i don't want to save the entire list. i want to pick and choose
@RolandTaylor i like kitties
@RolandTaylor +1 where did you get this from?
@jokerdino you shouldn't say that to a man that eats kittens... joke
@aking1012 i also like chicken because they are tasty
@hakermania my head
@hakermania from the link earlier posted
14:48
@aking1012 why joke? :D
You don't eat kittens?
@RolandTaylor just didn't want it to be taken the wrong way...
@aking1012 lol
I understand
I get oversat a lot myself
Format junkie 19/25, cool :)
@RolandTaylor valid points. we probably won't be talking this much if nitroshare was there.
izx
izx
14:49
Whoa @haker is that your blog/review?
ok time for #d-a-t meeting :S
@jokerdino partly because of our own bias :D - but, bias aside, Nitroshare should have been there
@izx which?
@izx no.
@izx the earlier? no
14:50
@izx bindo bango != haker
@jokerdino agreed. i think the C++ thing had a bit to do with it, and the fact that it is SO cross platform. which is even more awesome, but not as "ubu targeted"
izx
izx
Ah. I agree with the omgubuntu judge point though, if he was spouting off while still in progress
@RolandTaylor yeah i would have replaced the game with it :P
izx
izx
Hi @Roland
14:51
@izx sadly, yes
@izx yes
@izx to be fair, fogger is pretty nice and should prove useful in the future.
@aking1012 he probably never faced the problem of transferring files across the network.
@izx even now with the community vote, I didn't like the 20 best apps post
14:51
@AmithKK thanks for the useful thought. :P
ok meeting.
@izx even if Format Junkie was in there
izx
izx
@haker, yeah, but that isn't as bad as actively promoting one or two apps during the actual...
@hakermania there should be a post with votes so far ranking and that's it. just "here are your current rankings...if your fave app isn't in the top 5, GET TO VOTING!!!" /post
@izx +1
@aking1012 +2
izx
izx
@aking1012 agreed re fogger
But it's about the principle...
14:54
@hakermania that's why I don't think that (especially) a popular blogger should be a judge in a competition like this
hm, meeting is in 30 more minutes. :/
makes for great celebrity fan fare, but it's a bad move
@izx i'm agreeing with you on both counts
BTW, the person Cooperjava something who did the lightread also redesigned OMG ubuntu site.
And I say this with no angst for Joey btw.
14:55
i hate me.
(I know someone might just jump on me for above statements)
@jokerdino oh?
Bye guys :)
@RolandTaylor :P
I shall avoid further discussion until a later time.
@RolandTaylor he also did the nitro task app btw.
@RolandTaylor yepp I know! But what it really bothered me was that the review criteria were not bore in mind :/
14:55
we have 130 more apps after than we did before.
don't lose the forest for the trees, there will be more apps, more contests, etc.
okk, before Jorge eats us, we should drop the matter.
And I was working on them
So I found a reference implementation of a "simple" ogg/theora/vorbis player and I'm thinking about that torrent-video-livestream thing again attempts to migrate the topic
@JorgeCastro More contests whoo!
@hakermania can i have the mailing list for wallch?
@jokerdino it doesn't bother me, shrug
14:56
@jokerdino should we have a mailing list *confused*
I just think the important thing about the contest is to get people writing apps
so that we have them
@jokerdino i think that means the mailing list is his inbox
@JorgeCastro heh /me shrug
@hakermania or gimme email id of both of you?
@izx, i just saw an answer of yours that's really 4 noobs
so detailed
14:58
@hakermania is it active or you just spewed it?
@jokerdino it is active
@hakermania ok thanks
@JorgeCastro i (and probably most of us) think that was a nice thing to do.
some of us weren't particularly impressed with the results but disagreements happen. We should move on :P
@RolandTaylor what bothers me more is the review criteria. We were working on them all the time. See my comment here: disq.us/8bfeli
@hakermania sent email.
izx
izx
@LnxSlck which one would that be? I try to be noob-friendly with answers, comments may be more impatient though...
15:06
it's ok, i was just amazed with some many detail
izx
izx
Yeah, that was speciallt designed to be very n00b-friendly since even long inline pastes in questions bother me.
If you see an answer that is rude or not n00b-friendly though please leave a comment, sometimes I could have been on mobile or not at my most patient :)
@izx heh, you're also friendly when someone posts a command-line at least you were to me...
no @izx, it's great
I abuse izx :P
and his VPS.
BTW, w00t. 3k views on my blog :P

Awesome!

@izx come by my school :P
i'll get you the shelter

Q: missing Launcher icon size slider

broiyanIn System Settings > Appearance in both Ubuntu and Ubuntu 2D, there is no icon size slider (in pixel units). How can I get access to the slider, which I know is visible in some installations of 12.04? Note this question is about the missing slider; not about changing the icon size. If I want...

@izx the answer went southward.
the actual answer is, you are using unity-2d. bye.

@SirCharlo wasnt sure thanks

no problem
are we sure he meant he's trying to run tomboy on windows and it's not just the self-deprecating "i'm a windows user so i suck at this" thing?
I don't think so..
@aking1012 +1 that is what I thought
he admits he's in the wrong forum
