@jokerdino: do you see faded-out posts in your tools/delete queue (those are answers not questions)?
yes i do
i know they are answers and i cant vote on them
izx
izx
if they have -1 you should be able to...
only 20k can delete vote on answers.

@jokerdino How can I get 17K quickly? :-/
izx
izx
07:10
@Chan-HoSuh Write a Quickly app ;)
quickly? :-p
@Chan-HoSuh ask izx to bounty his rep to you :P
I had that kind of idea, but it wasn't izx I was going to ask.
o.O
i am 9k short of rep here..
Wait, who's got more rep, anyway?
07:17
foss and oli
Wasn't izx saying something earlier about wanting to start over?
is it?
Well, I'm glad to be using Ubuntu again.
welcome back
somehow I was too lazy to reboot from my other OS for a while.
07:18
on mac?
I didn't want to say... :-/ But yeah.
I wanted you to imagine it was NetBSD or something.
good try
How have you been, Jokerdino?
07:20
not bad
i just need a new phone. i bricked the old one by dropping it in a fish tank
huh, they don't make phones the way they used to: as bricks to begin with.
lol it was a nokia phone
What are you considering? Or are you just going to get the same one?
Hello, unfortunately some button press and my window controls goes left to right,
get a temporary one until dec 21
if the world doesn't end, get an android after that
07:22
wanna do, as it was before
@RobinHood nice.
@Chan-HoSuh: not many phones survive water damage
though ...
@jokerdino: tried drying it out?
it is drying for quite some time
i dont think i can resuscitate it
07:23
some people swear that washing it with distilled water, and putting it in a bag of silica gel or rice does wonders
i don't have rice or silica gel but i think it would work
osmosis
XD
/me really likes his new phone ;p
still getting used to.. it being a small computer
no teasing
@RobinHood which version?
10.10
:/
no idea about that. and it is EOL already
07:26
Recently installed Ubuntu, totally new
why are you not on 10.04 or 11.04?
why should I? whats wrong with current one?
10.10 is unsupported
the current one is 12.04.
i mean, anything is better than 10.10
07:29
upgrade to 12.04 maybe?
@jokerdino: if you can find one, the nokia 1280 is a nice temp phone ;p
recommended ones are 10.04 and 11.04, right? or all except 10.10?
@JourneymanGeek i just need to see if it is still in sales
I've seen one in people's park
@RobinHood i recommend 12.04 but it has a different interface from 10.10
07:30
28 bucks i think, but it was a while back
30 bucks is decent
i just need a phone with call and maybe sms for now
anything better than my brick
lol
PAYG or got a contract?
prepaid
no plans for foreigners boo
(oh, and all phones are unlocked here. Which is nice. Though HTC bloody installed software for three carriers one of which isn't local as system software)
ahh
that would suck
it sucks but i was doing fine
until this phone went into the water
07:33
@JourneymanGeek lol,,I just comparing with samsung S-III :P
ya :/
lol
@RobinHood: my current phone is a subsidised HTC One V
@JourneymanGeek thanks, let me upgrade it.
@RobinHood download 12.04 iso and create a live usb?
or as my parents call it "Who the heck made your phone?"
nice lol
07:35
(they've never heard of HTC. It was the nicest over all phone in my price range. i'm also a sucker for metal cased gadgets ;p)
@jokerdino If I face same issue in 10.04, then?
HTC is not a minor company
@JourneymanGeek htc is not known?!
@JourneymanGeek best one
@RobinHood i said 12.04
@Chan-HoSuh but samsung is bigger
07:36
yes, I know :-)
My parents arn't geeks ;p
@RobinHood you would have other problems though
@JourneymanGeek neither are mine :p
and there wasn't anything samsung by this carrier in my price range
@Chan-HoSuh they both are asian though
@JourneymanGeek samsung is costlier IIRC
yup
the closest model they had to this was the ace i think
07:37
due to Android
@Chan-HoSuh
I see you are a big fan of Android? :)
lol
I'm personally not buying anything apple until they stop sueing people
you mean you are never gonna buy apple?
07:38
go for HTC
Never
well until they start behaving sensibly again
if it wasn't super costly, i might have.
but i dont think i would if i can get a cheaper and a better android
I disagree with their current stance on android
which i would
well, they are acting sensibly... they are acting in their best interests.
07:39
apple fanbois are even more annoying
(sadly this makes my next mp3 player a pain in the rear.)
@Chan-HoSuh: Assuming they win. At this point there's a good risk they might not
I haven't been following it, but my view is that it was necessary for them, if they want to keep their monopoly.
Well, they never really had one
They did at one point, but Android had surprising growth.
they produced products that are significantly better and got ahead in many cases. Then they crushed competing products
but its a personal viewpoint ;p
07:42
They probably see this as their most promising strategy against Android.
er, other than what has worked so far?
Better marketing, better specifications in many cases, and actually producing a desirable product?
Even if they lose $$, it's not an unreasonable battle from the purely capitalistic viewpoint (putting asides issue of morality/being good corporate citizens/etc)
Well, they can slow down SOME of their competitors
who also happen to be their suppliers
what MS did is more sensible - licencing technology under RAND terms quietly
If they could stop Samsung from making rectangular phones (yea I know it's a bit more complicated than that, but let's be brief and funny :-)), it'd be huge
lol
looks at his phone
It has a chin like jay leno ;p
07:45
@JourneymanGeek re: producing a better product, from their viewpoint they've done this before and lost
@Chan-HoSuh: the best case scenario - apple loses, and people can make featureless slabs without fear
@Chan-HoSuh: I never said anything about a better product ;p
oh, "desirable", haha
my mistake :)
lickable, rather than functional... got it :)
they're using higher res screens earlier than anyone else on standard models (which is nice). With the ipod, they cornered the market on the drives they used so they got a head start
omg fanboys
07:47
(Well, this means everyone else eventually uses better screens, I mean samsung makes the damned things) and everyone wins
I have to admit I was something of an Apple fanboy a few years ago
But after Apple became big and "everyone" became a fanboy, I had to move onto something even more elitist
lol
Hipster! ;p
in a way we are all computer hipsters here
lol
I just use whatever OS i need to ;p
well, yeah, of course. I'm not an idiot :)
But sometimes I feel the need to use Ubuntu :)
07:51
My server runs it
I have some windows xp and 7 boxes, I have some VMs...
I need to do fresh linux desktop install but its getting delayed along with my new computer
I think I hear jokerdino gagging
oh, he knows this ;p
no i was reading reddit
reads up the convo
are you a redditer, jokerdino?
just happened a while ago
07:53
you try to get the big reddit score yet?
i crossed 100. does it count?
i am just reading interesting things.
hunh, I have no idea
is 100 a lot? I'm guessing not
it's a good source of fun and interesting links
what's your workflow? Do you just scan the main page?
front page and ubuntu subreddit
i note that most of funny reddit pics end up on 9gag
07:58
reddit feeds many others
I suspect the majority of the Internet fun stuff comes from reddit and just a few places.
slashdot, 4chan etc?
yes, except I don't know if I would include slashdot. Do they really originate stuff?
i think they share links? i haven't used it
well, I'm thinking more along the lines of, original stuff comes from (to be somewhat loosely interpreted) a few places like reddit, 4chan, etc., and then there's another layer with slashdot, boingboing, etc., that spreads it further and possibly expanding on it
that could be it
08:04
there's also Something Awful, but I never used it
I have to admit reddit can suck you in... reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/yes5i/…
it can.. :/
Thanks for helping them suck me in, Jokerdino.
welcome :P
hey hey
hi Greek. ;-)
08:12
@jokerdino hi 5 hours early :P
How did you manage to join Ask Ubuntu and this chat?
@jokerdino hm?
@hakermania 5 hours early? o.O
@jokerdino yep :D I'm 5 hours late :D
what is it there? 5 am?
@hakermania ah
08:13
@jokerdino I remember yesterday it was 19.00 here and there it was 00.00
i get it yep :-)
It's 11am there
@jokerdino ""How did you manage to join Ask Ubuntu and this chat?"" was his for me?
yeah, mainly the second part
@jokerdino I don't understand the question :P
how did you end up here??
you used to be on ubuntu forums IIRC
08:15
@jokerdino a mouse click brought me here
That is interesting
@hakermania ok then. before you start trolling me
@jokerdino I'm still wandering at UF, but the traffic there is little lately

you can install a autorefresh addon?
@jokerdino I already have but it is evil
dont know.
@jokerdino I don't want to refresh the whole page :P This costs bandwidth
for some reason, the live updates dont work here

@jokerdino so, you don't see the '1 question with new activity' text once in a while on top of the questions?

@jokerdino As with 99% of your internet problems, we can chalk this down to the firewall not allowing the XMLHTTPConnect required by the AJAX updates...
that must be it
@izx wow ;)
09:38
saturday is boring as always
@jokerdino why so?
not many on IRC, AU questions down. not many come here to chat. nothing to read on planet, less bugs and updates to think about, etc
@jokerdino aren't you working on any project ?
not really.
i don't do coding yet.
wait.
@izx I think it's a real question, but I'm on the fence about whether or not it should be closed as too localized. I'm leaning away from doing so though, at least for the time being. I've attempted to answer it. The OP says the 100 GB of disk usage is from making copies of "system files."
That seems unlikely, but if this user's Ubuntu system's system files have actually grown to 50 GB (or even 25 GB, and s/he accidentally copied them three times...), that's probably some bug, and it shouldn't be closed without telling him/her about that. (I've included that info in my answer.)
09:40
i can do translations
@jokerdino to which language?
Tamil.
@jokerdino you should learn to code. It is huge fun :D
I tried but not much of an interest at the moment.
I can do bitesize bugs if there are any :)
@EliahKagan As long as the user continues to reply and ask for help I am ok with that post and the answer, if there are any issues with accidental closes let me know so we re-open it. If the user just quits for a few weeks and stops requesting help just re-flag it and we can close that later.
09:44
@BrunoPereira Thanks. Will do.
izx
izx
@BrunoPereira @EliahKagan Sounds good.
@BrunoPereira: can you re-open this question please? As the answer and comments explain, the problem isn't MergeLists, but that the OP had a proxy which was blocking apt-get requests by returning 200 OK with junk HTML.

if they don't want to delete dupe questions, dupe answers shouldnt be either. especially if they have put in effort
