It's odd that someone thinks 12.04 cannot be dual-booted with another OS. (Like every Ubuntu release, it certainly can, so that answer is majorly wrong.) Might there be some point of confusion in our documentation somewhere?
@msPeachy It was flagged as not an answer (visible in the 10k mod tools). But it is an attempt to answer the question (it's just quite wrong). I flagged it as "very low quality" instead. I'm not sure if moderators will consider that flag correct, or if "very low quality" is only for when it's impossible to know what the answer is saying. So I won't be surprised (nor upset) if my flag is declined.
@msPeachy Thx. I think flagging as "low quality" is appropriate. But as I said, please don't be surprised if your flag is declined (or disputed). I am not really sure if it's considered appropriate to flag this sort of post at all. (After all, we also have voting at our disposal.) I just figure it's easier and more efficient, in this particular situation, to flag it and see what the mods say, than the open a meta question.
Anyways, I was posting about it here in case anybody had any insight into why someone would think that, as of 12.04, you can't install alongside another OS. My concern was that maybe there's a confusing statement in community (or Canonical) documentation somewhere.
Unrelated.... If there's someone who knows APT really well, I think there's an answer to this bountied question, involving setting a higher priority to software from lucid than the priorities for software from lucid-updates and lucid-security (and of course also lucid-proposed and lucid-backports). I think you can do that. I'm not sure how, though.
Is there a way to roll back a LTS Maintenance Upgrade to the previous version, say from 10.04.02 LTS from 10.04.03 LTS ?
I am not facing a problem now, but need to figure out means to back out the packages before I rollover to 10.04.03 LTS on my server, in case of any need.

@StephenMyall :-( That's...unfortunate. BTW, if you're using Chromium/Chrome and the problem is you closed the tab, window, or browser, then you can reopen it (including your unsaved form data) from the Recently Closed "drop up" menu (lower right corner of the screen when you open a new blank tab).
@StephenMyall Actually, I think AU has some partially-functional cookie-style saving too; I have sometimes (~50%) recovered a partially completed answer, even on another machine (!)
just remove ur network manager and config set by command: sudo ppoeconf .thats all.work for very well after so much frustration
For instance, is it saying to remove a package or packages that provide the network manager, or to remove the network manager's configuration, or that running sudo pppoeconf will have the effect of removing the network manager's configuration, or that the user must do something in particular when running sudo pppoeconf to remove the network manager's configuration?
And what does "config set" mean? Is that something else to remove, or is that something pertaining to the running of sudo pppoeconf? Does it mean to "set the configuration" using pppoeconf?
@EliahKagan It boils down to "Remove networkmanager (GUI tools) and configure everything by hand", which, based on the original question, is going to be as useless....
@EliahKagan Poor English - yes, I think he means "set the configuration"
@HardCode Do you want to write a program that does this, or do you just have a particular file (or files) you want to convert? That is, are you looking for an program that runs in Ubuntu that will do this?
Oh, I see. There's an AU question for this. (I didn't find it before, as it doesn't appear your AU and SO profiles are linked.)
I have a Large XML file (600MB) and i want to convert that into CSV through Terminal Commands. I have tried to convert the XML into TXT through xml2 command using the following syntax.
xml2 < BIG.xml > BIG.txt
My XML Fromat is
<ReportDetails>
<Date>08/08/2012</Date&g...
@HardCode Once you convert it to flat format with xml2, you should first grep the fields you want, to keep only those lines in the output; notice that all the data is then after an = sign, so grep/sed or grep with lookbehind should separate that; you then insert commas at the end of each line for one element, with a line break after each final line...
@HardCode Also, if you're willing to install software (actually, this doesn't even need to be "installed," so long as you have a Java runtime installed), you might consider using a tool like this: code.google.com/p/xml2csv-conv
@EliahKagan I think you got it right; I just added the third "p" to "pppoeconf" :)
@HardCode: To be honest unless you are looking at this as an opportunity to learn or some kind of challenge to do it within the shell, you would be better off with a utility like the one @EliahKagan suggested...
@EliahKagan NP. I think you may want to add a note that removing NetworkManager will mean that configuring every other connection (ethernet via DHCP, wireless, etc.) must also always be done by hand...
@izx Warning added. BTW, if you feel so inclined (I don't remember how to do it), you may want to expand the answer to include information about disabling specific network interfaces from being managed by NetworkManager, while leaving others.
@EliahKagan I would, but I think the answer doesn't have much merit --- NetworkManager is supposed to work with PPPoE, and I don't see how just using the CLI configuration tool will magically solve his problems....
@EliahKagan: thanks for fixing that typo on the kernel answer, I was going to paste in a link to a question that describes the steps but fat-fingered Enter instead :)
I want to install old ubuntu 6.06LTS Dapper Drake icon set in my ubuntu 12.04LTS Precise Pangolin.

What's with the martial spirit in recent questions? Someone wants to "wrestle [sic] control from root", another wants to "fire commands in different terminals"....
Why not? I can do it with win7 operating systems and most linux operating systems you just need to configue the right files to start the program as an application...xP So why don't you go back to studding more kid.... — kyle2 hours ago
I want to delete all the history of the unity dash about files, videos, text files, images, etc. I find it surprising that the best thing that activity log manager can do is to delete the history of one week only.
@izx that guy got a gold badge for that question, and it was mainly because of the erotic media files, apparently, too many guys were having the same issue.
Flagged a question yesterday as off topic, strange as OP has decent Rep. Gave him BoD for this reason but despite my best effort I think this is way off topic
I am trying to play wolfenstien ET and everything works fine, except the sound... I can't hear anything, doesn't matter if it speakers or headphones..
Anyone have any ideas?

@StephenMyall you should use code sample format for terminal commands and outputs or press Ctrl+K instead of using the quote format, just a suggestion.
We use the dollar sign link for code and the " for quotes right, Why am I seeing code formated as quotes? One example is this answer http://askubuntu.com/posts/146792/revisions
I have heard that some don't like how it looks, But it looks that way on purpose, It's mono-space so we can tell where...
Alright, @jokerdino @msPeachy let's give this guy some love: "I sometimes browse erotic media files... Is there a way I can block this folder from Gnome and/or Unity search? ... I often browse said files and work at the same time (kinda... lol)." vvvv
I sometimes browse erotic media files, and I have some of them stored in my hard drive. All said content is saved in one specific folder.
Is there a way I can block this folder from Gnome and/or Unity search?
I've heard 'use a separate user', but that won't work, as the files will still be in...
@StephenMyall Regarding the last sentence of your answer (to the Wolfenstein Enemy Territory question): I don't think a problem with the package itself would make the question off-topic. "Running third-party applications on Ubuntu" is explicitly part of what Ask Ubuntu exists to support.
@StephenMyall On the other hand, if you think that should be considered off-topic, you may want to leave that for now and post on meta to seek community consensus.
@EliahKagan will do that, because there could be a mixed bag of opinion. Then Im off to enjoy the first day of Irish sunshine this year for a few hours
@izx I agree. On the other hand, if the question were about the finer points of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory level design, it would probably be off-topic (but on topic here).
LOL, it seems Roland may have gotten a little judgmental (now deleted) and evoked this response in the comments: @RolandTaylor: Not browsing such files is not a solution. Actually browsing such files is good for health, removes boredom from your life – Manish Sinha Oct 3 '11 at 21:19
@ObsessiveFOSS Right now, I'm waiting for a shutter build to hit the "testing" ppa instead of nightlies, and then i'll package it up, upload and then i'll send the link.
What kind of sadist wants to run a single root partition in native ZFS on top of an LVM encrypted volume? At least carve out ~200MB for extN`/boot`....
> I want to install ubuntu as media server to stream audio/video files over wi-fi. Not only this i want this media server to use its own processing power to decode ans stream so that on remote end only file can play without using their own resource.
1. Open file 1 in gedit, left-maximize on screen. 2. Open file 2 in gedit, right-maximize on screen. 3. Look left, look right, think. 4. goto 3 until files end.
if I sudo tasksel then in the menus select lamp server... now it's installing but it's taking a frikkin long time (est. 25 minutes to download everything)
I think it would be fun to have ThinkGeek products onebox in the chat system.
We already Have other shopping sites like Amazon there, and this site is directed towards 'geeks'. Albeit this wouldn't be the most useful onebox, I do think It would be fun.
Please?!
@ObsessiveFOSS Weird! It's immaterial, anywho, unless editing tags your way results in no notifications...

@ObsessiveFOSS be careful, the close vote lust will be upon you, and then you will want 10K tools. And then you'll want 20K tools. and then you'll just shrug and start over on another site. The cycle is vicious.
