@JourneymanGeek can u tell me how can i convert xml file into CSV format in Ubuntu
@JourneymanGeek i tried to convert xml to flat format using xml2
@JourneymanGeek that converted well but when i tries to convert the flat format to CSV i got problems...
08:15
@HardCode: no idea
You could throw together something ugly with some preprocessing with sed / awk / cut, then load it into open office?

good day dear sirs
Bounty offered: How to create new file without any default file type? http://askubuntu.com/q/167609?atw=1 #terminal
It's odd that someone thinks 12.04 cannot be dual-booted with another OS. (Like every Ubuntu release, it certainly can, so that answer is majorly wrong.) Might there be some point of confusion in our documentation somewhere?
@EliahKagan should it be flagged as not an answer?
@msPeachy It was flagged as not an answer (visible in the 10k mod tools). But it is an attempt to answer the question (it's just quite wrong). I flagged it as "very low quality" instead. I'm not sure if moderators will consider that flag correct, or if "very low quality" is only for when it's impossible to know what the answer is saying. So I won't be surprised (nor upset) if my flag is declined.
that's what I thought too, it is an answer, anyway will flag it as low quality then. thank you
08:46
@msPeachy Thx. I think flagging as "low quality" is appropriate. But as I said, please don't be surprised if your flag is declined (or disputed). I am not really sure if it's considered appropriate to flag this sort of post at all. (After all, we also have voting at our disposal.) I just figure it's easier and more efficient, in this particular situation, to flag it and see what the mods say, than the open a meta question.
Anyways, I was posting about it here in case anybody had any insight into why someone would think that, as of 12.04, you can't install alongside another OS. My concern was that maybe there's a confusing statement in community (or Canonical) documentation somewhere.
maybe he's the one who's confused. Ubuntu can always be install alongside any OS.
Any os can be dual booted, just a matter of how much effort you want to take
you maybe right
Unrelated.... If there's someone who knows APT really well, I think there's an answer to this bountied question, involving setting a higher priority to software from lucid than the priorities for software from lucid-updates and lucid-security (and of course also lucid-proposed and lucid-backports). I think you can do that. I'm not sure how, though.

Q: How to Roll back newly applied LTS Maintenance Upgrade to the Previous Version

JamessIs there a way to roll back a LTS Maintenance Upgrade to the previous version, say from 10.04.02 LTS from 10.04.03 LTS ? I am not facing a problem now, but need to figure out means to back out the packages before I rollover to 10.04.03 LTS on my server, in case of any need.

@StephenMyall :-( That's...unfortunate. BTW, if you're using Chromium/Chrome and the problem is you closed the tab, window, or browser, then you can reopen it (including your unsaved form data) from the Recently Closed "drop up" menu (lower right corner of the screen when you open a new blank tab).
@EliahKagan not using chromium/chrome either. Will justr start again . Onward and upward
izx
izx
@StephenMyall Actually, I think AU has some partially-functional cookie-style saving too; I have sometimes (~50%) recovered a partially completed answer, even on another machine (!)
Unrelated... This answer is not very clear. Do any of you think it's salvageable through editing?

A: Certain websites not opening in 12.04

vikasjust remove ur network manager and config set by command: sudo ppoeconf .thats all.work for very well after so much frustration

For instance, is it saying to remove a package or packages that provide the network manager, or to remove the network manager's configuration, or that running sudo pppoeconf will have the effect of removing the network manager's configuration, or that the user must do something in particular when running sudo pppoeconf to remove the network manager's configuration?
And what does "config set" mean? Is that something else to remove, or is that something pertaining to the running of sudo pppoeconf? Does it mean to "set the configuration" using pppoeconf?
izx
izx
10:04
@EliahKagan It boils down to "Remove networkmanager (GUI tools) and configure everything by hand", which, based on the original question, is going to be as useless....
@EliahKagan Poor English - yes, I think he means "set the configuration"
I edited and commented. Please let me know if you think my edit or comment should be different (or nonexistent).
Unrelated, I think this and this (by the same newly created user account) should be considered spam.
@EliahKagan can u help me parsing XML file
@HardCode I don't really have any expertise at that. But I'm willing to look at it and let you know if I can help.
Are you coding something that parses XML ...or are you just looking at an XML file in plain text and trying to glean some information from it?
well i have an xml file and i want to convert it to CSV ...
@EliahKagan i am really new to Ubuntu if you point me towards a direction i can also try to figure out
@HardCode Do you want to write a program that does this, or do you just have a particular file (or files) you want to convert? That is, are you looking for an program that runs in Ubuntu that will do this?
Oh, I see. There's an AU question for this. (I didn't find it before, as it doesn't appear your AU and SO profiles are linked.)

Q: Convert XML to CSV shell command line

HardCodeI have a Large XML file (600MB) and i want to convert that into CSV through Terminal Commands. I have tried to convert the XML into TXT through xml2 command using the following syntax. xml2 < BIG.xml > BIG.txt My XML Fromat is <ReportDetails> <Date>08/08/2012</Date&g...

izx
izx
10:16
@HardCode Once you convert it to flat format with xml2, you should first grep the fields you want, to keep only those lines in the output; notice that all the data is then after an = sign, so grep/sed or grep with lookbehind should separate that; you then insert commas at the end of each line for one element, with a line break after each final line...
@HardCode Also, if you're willing to install software (actually, this doesn't even need to be "installed," so long as you have a Java runtime installed), you might consider using a tool like this: code.google.com/p/xml2csv-conv
izx
izx
@EliahKagan I think you got it right; I just added the third "p" to "pppoeconf" :)
@HardCode: To be honest unless you are looking at this as an opportunity to learn or some kind of challenge to do it within the shell, you would be better off with a utility like the one @EliahKagan suggested...
@izx Thx. That was a silly mistake. Thx for correcting it. :-)
izx
izx
@EliahKagan NP. I think you may want to add a note that removing NetworkManager will mean that configuring every other connection (ethernet via DHCP, wireless, etc.) must also always be done by hand...
@izx Warning added. BTW, if you feel so inclined (I don't remember how to do it), you may want to expand the answer to include information about disabling specific network interfaces from being managed by NetworkManager, while leaving others.
10:30
@EliahKagan @izx After converting to txt file i get those /tag=val output
Here is a part of the Out put
/ReportDetails/ReportRequest/ExtractDate=08/08/2012

izx
izx
@EliahKagan I would, but I think the answer doesn't have much merit --- NetworkManager is supposed to work with PPPoE, and I don't see how just using the CLI configuration tool will magically solve his problems....
@EliahKagan: thanks for fixing that typo on the kernel answer, I was going to paste in a link to a question that describes the steps but fat-fingered Enter instead :)
@izx No problem. I'm glad you've added the link now.

Here.

Q: Why are people using Quotes instead of Code?

mateo_saltaWe use the dollar sign link for code and the " for quotes right, Why am I seeing code formated as quotes? One example is this answer http://askubuntu.com/posts/146792/revisions I have heard that some don't like how it looks, But it looks that way on purpose, It's mono-space so we can tell where...

Q: Is there a way I can block a folder from Gnome and/or Unity search?

Paolo SanchezI sometimes browse erotic media files, and I have some of them stored in my hard drive. All said content is saved in one specific folder. Is there a way I can block this folder from Gnome and/or Unity search? I've heard 'use a separate user', but that won't work, as the files will still be in...

LOL
at work?
izx
izx
"browse and work" ;)
oh sorry
@StephenMyall Regarding the last sentence of your answer (to the Wolfenstein Enemy Territory question): I don't think a problem with the package itself would make the question off-topic. "Running third-party applications on Ubuntu" is explicitly part of what Ask Ubuntu exists to support.
oh well, he answered and accepted his own answer
izx
izx
12:14
it ties back to activity log/journal...
so it's similar to the recent questions we looked at/duped
@EliahKagan will remove that comment from the question
@EliahKagan here needs to be an automated script to search based on keywords or other heuristics...
@izx when you say browse, you merely browse? lol
@StephenMyall On the other hand, if you think that should be considered off-topic, you may want to leave that for now and post on meta to seek community consensus.
@EliahKagan will do that, because there could be a mixed bag of opinion. Then Im off to enjoy the first day of Irish sunshine this year for a few hours
izx
izx
12:17
@msPeachy One man's "browse" is another man's "watch", etc... :p
FWIW even if he were running it on Wine IMO it would be on-topic...
@izx I agree. On the other hand, if the question were about the finer points of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory level design, it would probably be off-topic (but on topic here).
FWIW?
@izx okay sir, got it

Glad to be of help, ma'am! :)
@msPeachy seems we have a consensus, no need for a meta question (Ignore this, i picked up on the wrong conversation)

title	How to get Ubuntu version number on the Wallpaper?
post-text	I want to have Ubuntu Version name on my Desktop Wallpaper same as we have at login screen (LDM greeter) of UBUNTU 12.04LTS at bottom.

I want the same way on my desktop wallpaper on opposite side (left of screen). with same font and same style that unity-greeter has.

Anyone knows how to get UBUNTU Version name on Desktop alike UNITY Greeter ?

@izx it's not that important.

Before we go nuts on it and "deploy", I do want someone to post on meta - that way, we can have SE get the chance to yell at us.
Due process and yada-yada-ya

@ObsessiveFOSS It comes from the page source, an auth-key to know which editor an edit is coming from probably?

Withhold the source code though, and only email that to an SE employee, until we get their ok (or lack of attention).
@izx Maybe you should invalidate your session...
@jrg Can I have a link to the meta post?
izx
izx
@jrg There is no source...and hopefully we won't need to write any.
@ObsessiveFOSS I passed you the relay baton, now it's your turn to run with it :P
Make up for your self-described recent lousy answers :P
@izx I am not using your fkey. I don't want to be suspended. I am also not self-voting.

My only goal in life is to have closevotes.

@ObsessiveFOSS be careful, the close vote lust will be upon you, and then you will want 10K tools. And then you'll want 20K tools. and then you'll just shrug and start over on another site. The cycle is vicious.
Stack Exchange is a brutal master.
