anyone know emacs? C-x 2 makes 2 horizontal windows. How do I make vertical windows?
@RolandTaylor still here?
@msPeachy back now
I'm getting food
same here, lunch
oh nice :D
04:17
got biscuits for lunch
o0
Thats not lunch ;p
its a snack
ugh
I'll have rice with beef later
stupid slow internet stackchat glitches
I'm at work, only have biscuits here
i used to like biscuits
04:21
before they were cool?
For me the bare minimum is a cheese sandwich
lightly toasted at home so that the cheese won't slide out
I'm about to have crackers
as long as it's not a tuna sandwich i'm game...mostly
@aking1012 love tuna sandwich
Rice with beef... my stomach is starting to talk to me, it sounds covetous
@msPeachy ate them every day for about 10 years. it gets old fast
04:24
e_e that had to suck
yes. yes it did. but i was young, so i was taking my lumps
@aking1012 10 years! everyday?
grew up relatively poor and it was the cheapest lunch around
@RolandTaylor beef is good
@aking1012 lucky you had sandwich, tuna sandwich here is actually more expensive than most sandwiches
canned goods i suppose. cultural difference
childhood funny story. tuna sandwich in halves. i didn't want to eat it. it was cut in to quarters. my response, now i have twice as much to eat (because it was four pieces)
04:26
regular sandwich would cost about 10 pesos, but tuna is around 30 pesos
What is in a regular one?
mayo
cheese
@msPeachy not bad actually
peanut butter
@aking1012 is it lunch time there too?
04:29
ate peanut butter with a spoon for calories when i was doing the van-living/saving money for school thing
no, but i just ate some noodles and deer
e_e peanut butter...
boring sometimes
well it's no nutella to be sure
@aking1012 deer?
you hunt?
lol
think relatively free meat. and yes i shoot.
you do? that's scary
04:32
O_o
not really. i don't think it's actually hunting though
@RolandTaylor you don't like peanut butter? I'm told it's good for the brain.
@aking1012 what type of gun do you have?
accuracy and distance on rifles is so high, it doesn't count as hunting. it's just accurately shooting
@aking1012 Do you shoot with real guns or BB guns?
Wow...
rifle
04:33
rem 700 308
the only rifle one will ever need
if I see a guy with a gun, I'd run as fast as I can
well i don't carry it down the street...
@aking1012 sniper? then there's no fun in the hunting part.. right?

@ShyamK it's a task, not a sport
just find a deer.. point aim shoot...BANG.. drop dead
Task? how come?
I remember one time I was in a grocery store, then someone came in and shouted "hold up nobody moved", I was so scared I couldn't move, it turned out it was just a crazy guy holding a toy gun!
@aking1012 Thx.
@msPeachy I do like peanut butter
but not all the time
it can get boring sometimes
@msPeachy funny
04:36
brb
@aking1012 I thought hunting was a sport..
well sort of
NOBODY MOVE A CHESS PIECE
@ShyamK some people think so. that's a distinction i'm trying to draw. it's not a sport. it's a task. something to do for a purpose
I SAW THAT
@aking1012 it was funny after we realized it was just some crazy kid, but I was really scared.

Hi all, I'm back
I'm also black, but that's beside the point.
Hi back. (lame jokes ensues)
btw, did my tumblr post appear in RSS feed of planet or something?
i can't see it on the planet itself but it is sitting nicely in google reader
04:55
can you pass variable names with pipes? something like ls *.c | gcc -o <filenamepassedin>.out filenamepassin.c, so i can compile all the .c files in the directory and have .out files with the same name?
@Jeff Are you trying to compile all these .c files into object files, or into executables?
executables
@Jeff So you don't actually need to do this all in a single invocation of gcc, right?
right
... and the example I gave should not have the .out
@jokerdino I haven't checked the planet today
05:00
@RolandTaylor hmm alright.
it is not urgent or anything.
i got an announcer badge out of it. so i am fine.
@EliahKagan but there are too many for me to type gcc -g -o basefilename basefilename.c (well, there aren't too many if I was patient enough, but I'm not and I want to learn BASH).
MiB yay
@Jeff for X in *.c; do gcc -o ${X%.c}.out $X; done
Add an echo before gcc (with spaces around it) if you want to test it. (Then you'll see what commands will be run, instead of actually having them be run.)
for X in *.c; do echo gcc -o ${X%.c}.out $X; done
(That also helps when you're composing commands, if you're not sure what they will do.)
In the {...} expression, %.c removes trailing .c.
05:10
@EliahKagan that works (I changed it a little to remove the .out and add a -g
@Jeff Yeah, typically executables on a Unix-like system will not have extensions indicating they're executables.
i'm gonna let those compile while i sleep overnight! thanks everyone for answering my questions.
@Jeff You had been asking about using pipes. Pipes are just for when you want the output of one command to be the input of another command. Remember that the arguments you pass on the command line to a command are not part of the command's input (not in the sense relevant to pipes).
@eliah noted!
goodnight.

The roach (Rutilus rutilus), also known as the common roach, is a fresh- and brackishwater fish of the Cyprinidae family, native to most of Europe and western Asia. Note that name "roach" is not unique, but fishes called roach can be any species of the genera Rutilus and Hesperoleucus depending on locality. The plural of the term is also roach. Description The roach is typically a small fish, often reaching no more than about 35 cm (14 inches). Maximum length is 45 cm. The body has a blueish silvery color and becomes white at the belly. The fins are red. The number of ...

@izx I voted on the first. The second already had enough votes and was deleted. As for the third one, that's very recent and the OP may still edit it to turn it into an answerable question. I don't feel comfortable voting for deletion there, and I'd discourage others from deleting that one at this time. (I also couldn't vote to delete it--with my amount of rep, I don't think I can cast delete votes on posts so new.)

06:24
@EliahKagan Thanks. I agree there's a question in there somewhere (hd spindown), but it looks like the OP hit and ran... :(
@izx Yeah, I'd be OK with deleting it eventually, I just think it's too early right now.
Btw @izx, you might want to include information about selecting to install just a command-line only system from the F4 menu on the alternate CD, in your answer here. (As that's an excellent alternative which also uses the alternate CD--it does the same thing as installing from the minimal CD but not fetching any "extra" packages.)

izx
@EliahKagan EXCELLENT idea! Let me see if I can grab a screenshot...
@EliahKagan Thoughts? (I removed my earlier instructions)
06:40
@izx Looks good! But I recommend putting back the earlier instructions as another option. After all, the OP had said that worked for him (and accepted the answer when it presented only that method). Plus, some people might like a way to be able to install just a little bit more (of their choosing) than the minimal system.
Good night all, going to bed

@EmersonHsieh And where will we be supporting that distro... AskIQunix.com? :P
Nope, just some extra stuff to add
So, I've been thinking of ways of installing Ubuntu on a machine with no optical drive, where there is no external drive either.
izx
izx
@EliahKagan No USB? No ethernet?
@EliahKagan: netbooting?
Presumably there is some way to access the Internet, to obtain an Ubuntu .iso (or something).
I was wondering--if you have some unpartitioned space on your disk, and you have a Windows system with a Wubi system installed inside of it, can you boot into the Wubi system, install ubiquity in it, and use it to install something that is roughly a copy of what you have in the Wubi system (which doesn't require the Windows system to run)?
06:58
or a local network
izx
izx
If you have a wired ethernet connection, simply use PXE; if you can bootstrap the iPXE ISO, you can do it all over HTTP without having to bother with DHCP, etc.
Oh, you have windows?
This was ages ago, but there used to be a tool by the same people who did wubi that converted a wubi install to a full one
If I had this problem in real life, I wouldn't be reaching for bizarre, untested solutions. But I'm curious about what the limitations are of running Ubiquity in strange situations.
You could also probably use the bootloader that wubi uses to load an ISO
or just go with unetbootin
@JourneymanGeek I think there is still a supported way to do that.
07:00
Its been ages ;p
just hitches his pants up, and installs Ubuntu like a grown up ;p
izx
izx
@EliahKagan Without Wubi and only Windows with no optical/USB first: Install the latest syslinux with NTFS support to drive C (as bootloader), and also download the Ubuntu HDinstall along with an ISO. That's that.
I haven't tested it, but since 11.04-ish migrating Wubi to a real partition is supposed to be pretty easy.
@izx: or use unetbootin ;p
izx
izx
@JourneymanGeek No optical, no USB, no DHCP setup possible for PXE...what then?
@GeorgeEdison Yay!
Wait a few days and I might have something good like GTK+ building.
07:06
unetbootin would work as long as you have windows (or linux) and a internet connection
fun would be trying to get an install up with no optical, usb, dhcp OR current OS ;p
The moment you have an OS, there's all sorts of funky crap that you can try
izx
izx
@JourneymanGeek Say I use unetbootin to install to C:\ ... will it work?
well, no, it'll download and fire up the install cd
then its almost exactly the same as if you used a physical cd rom
I'm back! @RolandTaylor escaped again.
I need help. Ubuntu suddenly takes very long time to boot. I don't receive any error messages.
@JourneymanGeek :) is that really your puppy, or just a random dog you took photos of?
this is a dupe of this

has a kubuntu, and a gentoo system at home

I use Windows 7 too, at work
