@Parto Sometimes they even omit .
@Kulfy omit?
.
They just run chmod -R 777 / with sudo.
Oh, yeah. Hahah. that's now funny and very dangerous
I am glad to be in the ./ category especially for apache (php) permissions
12:38
@Parto I'm not sure why it reminded me of Rush Hour 3

2 hours later…
15:04
@Kulfy which will effectively brick your system in terms of administration as sudo and the like wont run properly anymore
15:46
alright, not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I didn't want to make another "ubuntu won't boot" question - I'm installing Ubuntu on a Lenovo c940 alongside Windows and I can't get it to run grub no matter -what- I do
I've tried the liveusb with default settings, I've tried it with funky settings... I have no idea why I don't get a grub, it doesn't even show up in the bios
You should create a new question describing what you already did...
alright! Didn't want to add to the million and one "no grub" questions but I guess that's the best thing to do here
If none of the answers to already posted questions can help you then you are probably facing something different...
@OwenVersteeg does the liveusb actually boot?
yep!

Q: No GRUB after trying to dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows 10

Owen VersteegSo I've tried to install Ubuntu using the 20.04 liveusb, and I can't seem to get it to boot. I'm pretty sure this is related to some sort of bootloader problem - either installed in the wrong place, or in the wrong way. I've tried: Reinstalling using the liveusb the Boot-Repair software (I didn'...

just posted it as a question
the liveusb is just fine, works great, boots, no errors or anything during the installation process, tells me to reboot, which I do... and then I find zero ubuntu
16:00
so when you start your computer, it boots straight to windows?
yep, exactly
and there's not even an entry in the bios for any grub/ubuntu/anything, just one entry for windows
is it in legacy mode or uefi mode or whatever that is
Well I've turned off uefi
so I... think it'd be in legacy mode?
@OwenVersteeg why did you do that?
well, actually, I didn't, my boss did when he started this process

Q: Ubuntu using LXDE taking too long to shutdown

user2288551I have Ubuntu 20.04 and my desktop environment is LXDE. When I try to shutdown my computer the system keeps waiting and there is a message: A stop job is running for Session c2 of user ... (1min 30s) I've searched for this issue and encountered this thread: A stop job is running for Session c2 o...

but then I said I could do it, and now I have egg on my face
(I don't mean "OMG what a terrible thing to do!", it was a real question)
Hahahah yeah
The funky thing is I can't seem to turn it back on
i also am running on legacy mode
There's a section in the (very modern and weird looking) bios that has an option for Secure Boot. He put it on Disabled, I tried putting it back on Enabled and that ... still didn't turn it on
16:17
disable CSM
RAID
I know nothing
what's CSM and where would I disable it? I'm in the bios now and I see nothing
your Ubuntu partition is mounted on /tmp/...? or I'm just really bad at reading boot-repair info
uh I think that's just the liveusb mounted on /tmp
Me too, boot-repair is a bit tricky to understand
I thought maybe one thing to do is to chroot and try to muck around with grub-install there?
luckily i am not a boot expert
16:26
@OwenVersteeg I'm looking at this line
nvme0n1p5 362.2G 1% /tmp/tmp.rvPRnigEaf
Yeah I ran boot repair while I was on the liveusb
so I thiiiink that's it?
but it's very likely I am completely wrong

Q: Can I know the previous (say last 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 years) Elections for Moderators Nominated and Elected?

PRATAPCan I know the previous (say last 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 years) Elections for Moderators Nominated and Elected as a list? For Example: And once elected as a Moderator.. what is the period of the Moderator position? 1year 2years? life time?

It's an ext4 partition of ~362 GB size
I think sda is your live USB in this report
anyway I don't know what the significance of it being mounted there would be :(
@OwenVersteeg the option disappeared?
if you turn it back on, you might see a boot option for Ubuntu
oh that's funky, huh
whether that option will work or not... :S
16:34
@Zanna I've rebooted a few times now and still no boot option for anything but Windows
Actually I did get a network boot option when I plugged in a USB-C -> ethernet cable
I mean in the BIOS/UEFI settings
yeah nothing in the BIOS settings
:/
there's a section "boot" and in there there's a heading "EFI" and under that I only see "windows boot manager"
are there some other settings to switch between legacy support and UEFI or something?
how did you make the live USB?
but anyway you were able to boot that, so changing it probably won't help
16:38
There is an option to enable or disable secure boot
My boss disabled it, I first left it on disabled, then tried enabling it
but for whatever very weird reason, "secure boot status" (a little bit of text under that) remained "disabled"
secure boot only works with UEFI I think
so if you disabled UEFI I don't think you can enable secure boot
Yeah I think so
I could be misremembering that though
but I didn't disable UEFI as far as I know
oh
I thought that was what you said your boss did
sorry
16:40
Oh, I meant he disabled secure boot
yes... usually that helps
I have never had any luck booting Ubuntu with secure boot on. But others have managed it :)
alright, maybe the best thing to do is to just wipe the windows partition, then install windows from scratch at a later date?
@OwenVersteeg eww no
yeah I figured that would be painful as hell
damn
just wipe it and forget about it
16:41
well, if Ubuntu doesn't boot now, there's no reason to expect it to do so after you kill Windows
đź‘Ť
well it does need to have both windows and linux on it somehow
oldfred the expert is there
:)
Ooh I like the sound of that
16:43
I can sign off haha
Oh, you're being helpful too!
Everyone is, I think this is just a particularly funky case I've gotten myself into
I have a feeling the "optane" is complicating things significantly
I'm just happy someone who actually knows installation stuff arrived on the scene
RAID is funky I think :/
I thiiiiink it's not RAID anything?
As far as I can tell the optane thing is just a caching sorta device in front of the ssd that keeps frequently used stuff
so it might be holding the bootloader? perhaps?
or maybe it isn't, but it should be?
16:57
you have got RAID stuff in your boot-repair report
oldfred is saying switch to AHCI in BIOS, after installing AHCI drivers in Windows
Ooh nice, I'll try that
fingers crossed
alright, so I'm in Windows, where do I get some ahci drivers? This is a Lenovo C940
wish I knew :S
do I want the Intel SATA Controller AHCI Driver for Windows 10?
That sounds right-ish
ah just kidding that was for a helix something?
17:11
sounds promising
I mean I'm looking up how to do it and some of the procedures I find mention that thing
nah that was for some other hardware
so there's an AHCI option in my bios
yes good
without having installed anything
but if you enable it, Windows may not boot
but it warns me all existing data on the drives will be erased
so that isn't totally ideal
17:11
yeah
that's another thing that could happen
so if I do this I format my entire hard drive?
that's why you have to do something in Windows first
@OwenVersteeg ideally no
ah hmm
ah also if I do this I lose the acceleration from optane?
that's not ideal either
@OwenVersteeg no idea at all
I think the procedures suggested in this answer do what oldfred is suggesting
but if you have anything you need presumably a backup would be very advisable
and I have no idea whether it would affect that extra drive
looks like quite a complex problem
after you fix it, you can explain it all to your boss and impress them with jargon B)
Well, the bios tells me I lose optane if I switch it to AHCI no matter what I do
17:22
oh :/
but there's got to be a way to do it just... normally?
other people appear to have been able to actually install linuxes on this thing
without sorcery
I always hear about other people installing stuff and it Just Worked™
17:41
oh no, now I get an error when trying to boot the liveusb
40% of OpenBSD installs lead to shark attacks. It's their only standing security issue.
2
@OwenVersteeg never been not relevant
how did I even get to this point
where my liveusb doesn't work, my optane is gone and my sanity is lost
at least you still have a job
I guess
Well not after everyone learns it took me a few hours to do something as simple as install ubuntu off a liveusb
did they all install it on a lenovo?
17:49
well everyone here has lenovo something but they're all a bit older and more sane
before intel decided to add ram-ssd-raid-things to everything
@OwenVersteeg that's their fault
@Videonauth YES

2 hours later…
19:38
So, for anyone who was curious how my problem ended up: turns out that disabling Optane is the only sane way to do this. Once Optane is disabled, it's fairly straightforward.
