Oleg SilkinI've been having this problem now for about an hour and I haven't been able to find anything on the internet that's related to the issue I'm having. Essentially I'm trying to change the fonts on my Ubuntu 18.04 system by using gnome-tweak-tool and whenever I go to the fonts tab and try clicking...

KOKOI have Ubuntu 16.04 using UEFI and Unity. My problem is that I can't stop the screen from seemingly suspend. It happens every time I close the lid or lock the screen, in which case it takes about 10s to dim out, and when I open the lid or press a key, if I have locked the screen without closing t...

Hi all!
At the rim of nowhere from the sea you should probably not expect too much of expertise in seafood - at least not on a pizza ;) — Takkat ♦ 12 mins ago
:-D
:) you read on our sister site?
@Fabby Do you mean the Brandenburg Gate? I never heard it called "arch" [sic!] or "arc" in English.
@Takkat: Occasionally.
I just see it is in the HNQ - weird question usually end up there attracting even weirder answers :D :D :D
@PerlDuck Too bad that Linus is from the "wrong" part of Scandinavia. :-D

Q: error while trying to install ubuntu mate 18 LTS: "MODSIGN: couldn't get uefi db list"

Tom KlinoI'm trying to install ubuntu Mate 18 LTS on a friend's laptop of model Sony Vaio. I've checked the usb installer for errors and saw that it works on my laptop. On similar questions online I see that some recommend turning off secure boot, but I see no such feature in my friend's laptop BIOS. A...

Hi Rinzy
13:57
the countdown has started :=) 4.925 to go
@Rinzwind you pay for a round when you reach the 200k, don’t you?
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L Welcome to the help desk, at first I create ticket for you ... Oh no it was a joke ;-) I've read your message carefully and as far as i understand you are trying to use Artificial Intelligence to turning off the secure boot on your friends notebook, is that correct?
@ManuelRodriguez The UbuntuQuestionsonU&L user is just a bot that reposts questions tagged with on Unix & Linux in this chat room. It won't reply to you :)
14:13
@terdon That is nice to know. Thank you terdon. I hope you're a real human ... isn't it?
@ManuelRodriguez beeep
Sorry :) Yes, everyone else here (at the moment) is a real human.
Well, either real or a very good imitation. I have my doubts about @Rinzwind.
@terdon My original intention was to figure out the problem with the Ubuntu 18.08 LTS install problem on the friend's notebook. But anyway. There is test available to determine if somebody is real or a bot, called Turing test ...
@dessert I except you all to throw a party :-)
@terdon hjf wefhwehf we ewfnhfewn nqf feh?
@Rinzwind Oh dear. Did the string generating AI crash?
Or did you just change your locale settings?
14:54
@cl-netbox: Wie geht’s, wie steht’s?
It's good to be back here after quite a while. :-]
Well, it is summer. And I went to Denmark for a shotgun wedding (not mine!).
@DavidFoerster Hey David ! :) Alles paletti ... und bei Dir ?
@cl-netbox Great! I met an awesome woman at that wedding. :>
@DavidFoerster Hope you enjoyed the vacation ! :)
@DavidFoerster Is she your woman now ? :D :D :D
Well… it looks like that will be the case soon.^^
@DavidFoerster Cool ! :) Congratulations in advance ! :)
14:58
Oh, you meant "woman" as in wife, didn't you? In that case, no. Neither of us intends to marry atm.
@DavidFoerster Hi David, we don't know each other but a warm welcome to my (sic;) chat. According to your profile, you're a poweruser with many useful postings in the past.
@ManuelRodriguez Thanks for the welcome. It looks like people think that, yes.
You're no member of AU at all (yet) though. :-P
@Rinzwind Well, you will only need to wait another maximum 25 days ... :D :D :D
Still, welcome to the AU chat!
@DavidFoerster That is true and I have no excuse. And I must admit, that I didn't have Ubuntu installed right now. But in the past I liked the Operating system and the community behind it very much.
15:02
A warm welcome from me too @ManuelRodriguez ! :)
@ManuelRodriguez I agree. That's one reason why I chose it when made the switch to Linux.
I changed to Ubuntu cuz Windows ME sucked :=)
@DavidFoerster Probably you're referencing to the community. I'm a fan of the Debconf and Ubucon meeting videos which are available on the web and are showing a very private insight into Open Source development.
and Ubuntu was the 1st to have a good working installation :D In Suse 4.6 I had to pick every package including libraries manually. That so did not work for me :X
@DavidFoerster No, I meant "girl friend" - that's what I understood in first place ... in Dortmund (Ruhrgebiet) people always say "Frau" rather than "Freundin" ... :)
Rinzy ! :) Good afternoon @Rinzwind ! :)
15:12
boxy \o
Sorry had to reset my locale back to english :=)
You can blame @terdon for that
@Rinzwind Because you mentioned “boxy”, which was a female internet troll in the 2000s. I'm asking me how would a robot troll look like. That is not a human but a machine who is trolling the internet. It could be a combination of a chatbot who is posting “I'm not a robot” and a Shannon machine who is switching themself off ... But by the way, this is a bit of a digression,
@ManuelRodriguez cl-netbox is boxy :=) If you want you can be added too :=) How does Many sound?
@Rinzwind Oh yes, please add me. I've no idea about what you're talking but I would like to be part of a list of famous Artificial Intelligence researchers and Ubuntu fanboys.
@Rinzwind What about "Roddy" @ManuelRodriguez ? :D :D :D
@ManuelRodriguez you sure that we all are "ubuntu fanboys" ? :D :D :D
Hi @Seth ! :) Nice to see you ! :) Everything okay (as good as possible) ?
15:31
@Rinzwind I simply went from Win 98 to Win 2k. :-D
@cl-netbox Let me explain it from the other point of view. In the Ubuntu operating system the gforth Forth interpreter is preinstalled, right? And if you're starting Forth and enter a short program which utilize the stack, you are able to run Forth under Linux, right? And Forth is the most piece of software ever invented. Now the conclusion is, that we are all Ubuntu fanboys, because all in the chat like Forth. It is so easy ...
@ManuelRodriguez That "troll" was named boxxy (with double x).
@DavidFoerster exactly ... and I am the boxy with triple XXX where @Rinzwind wiped the two XX's out ... hahaha :D :D :D
I'm off to play some Half-Life to get my dopamine level back to something more workable. :-D
@DavidFoerster See you later David ... :)

Q: Ubuntu not replying to ARP requests

JRszI experience a behavior on my linux machine that I cannot explain. I see incoming ARP requests but they are not answered by my machine. @dessert It wasn't my fault to miss the word "sophisticated" which is equal to advanced and elegant, but the keyboard driver of my operating system has deleted the adjective by himself. It was some kind of virus which has attacked the USB cable during the last Javascript live session.
@ManuelRodriguez I like it better this way, an adjective only kills the suspence.
20:29
The Ubuntu bot has posted a new issue from the Unix&Linux forum with the title “Ubuntu not replying to ARP requests”:
There is a client which has on their stackoverflow profile page the slogan that “he is batman” and he is playing around with the ARP protocol. The client with the big questionmark on his forehead is using a combination between Ubuntu 16.04 and Windows 10 and has absolutely no idea which hardware was built into his computer. Any advice for further investigation?

Q: Review (LQ): whats up with "New Contributor"?

guntbertWhile reviewing the LQ queue I was presented with something new: What is the purpose of the "New contributor" accompanied by a waving hand? Why is it shown with someone who has already 99 points? Found that one myself :-)
