So if a topic isn't answered in the first day, does the system continue to try and get it answered? I'm still not clear on how this site works.
jrg
jrg
@Isaac patience. We get hundreds of questions, not all of them get answered immediately, and some don't get answered at all
@Isaac I specifically have unanswered questions. I consider it my duty to research, and answer my own question if nobody knows so then EVERYONE knows.
@Isaac usually an answer will come when it comes... pretty much promoting your question around social media and updating your question with more information wouldn't hurt either
I know these things. I wanted to know about the the way the site itself handles a post. Maybe they're deleted after a week? maybe they're resorted on a different page? That's what I'm trying to ask.
Not the people. the system.
What's it doing with the posts?
jrg
jrg
they aren't deleted automatically. they don't stay on the front page, the front page is normally completely different after about an hour of activity (edits, new answers, etc)
00:15
then...?
you wait
if you don't get an answer, then research an answer or wait. bumping is bad form
I don't think i'm being clear about my question
i'm not asking "how do I get people to answer my questions"
i think you are. i think you're trying to ask about how to bump a question...but i'm listening
I hear you as well
and its the same answer
00:17
no no no... let me think of a better way to ask
i'll be afk for a bit, but i'll answer when i get back if i have an answer
I'm assuming this site takes your posts then it does no ranking what so ever between the up voted ones and the downvoted ones. After a year, the system treats them all the same. Unlike reddit, where they are sorted. Is this correct, or is there some sort of sorting the system does?
edits to include more information bump the question. votes do not bump the question. if it's a question about the bumping engine, then you should be asking on SO-meta
I'm not asking about bumping...
I"m asking how the system works
jrg
jrg
there is sorting
00:24
THANK YOU!
where?
jrg
jrg
but its all around age and views
not upvotes downvotes
i'm backing off. @jrg - i hope you handle this one. it FEELS like sorting==bumping to me, but i could be mistaken
@aking1012 at times, I do agree with you on that one ;)
That's the thing. This site feel very advanced. I was wondering if it solved the whole "bumping" crap that occurs on ubuntuforums.org
I think it does
I'll have to explore how this sites work further.
@jrg Thanks.
jrg
jrg
you're welcome
00:28
Is there a way for me to get questions I'll know how to answer?
jrg
jrg
other than looking around? no
you can watch a specific tag
They should have this
jrg
jrg
so for example, i watch the tag
I see
jrg
jrg
but i ignore the tag, since I know nothing about python
00:29
@jrg i watch eclipse
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 exactly. we all watch our own area of expertise.
Like I know what problems I've solved on my system. It would be nice if I could tell the site that I know certain things, then I could have a custom stream of questions I could knock out every day.
tags are very broad, but i'll try that
jrg
jrg
the trick is finding a high quality low traffic tag. ;)
I know python in the areas I've work in it, but I only know about web dev and the basics.
@Isaac if you don't think tags are specific enough, my opinion is that you just ask a question and high volume users determine if it's a dupe. if it is, you answer the original. if it's not, the answer is out there. after a period of time you become a high volume user -- at least in relevant tags
said i was backing off and i didn't...going to the store now. for sure.
jrg
jrg
00:33
@aking1012 need I kick you to force you to get work done? ;)
no sir
I made my avatar back in 2002-3 on an obscure site... I can't believe I'm seeing it again on this one.
This site uses Gravatar.
Well, you guys party way too hard for me. cya.
jrg
jrg
We party?
this is news to me

hi all
@ShyamK hello
I was wondering if sudo apt-get upgrade was enough to upgrade my ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04
I'm pretty new to the whole concept of terminal commands and linux altogether
06:20
I think Ubuntu may need to institute a competency quiz before enabling use of sudo

Q: SERIOUS LOGIN PROBLEM!

ahsanI am in a serious problem. I use ubuntu 12.04 I just curiously transferred 'my-username' folder into "lost+found" folder(which is normally locked). so that anyone from other user account can not access my files. BUT, after restart I JUST CAN'T LOGIN IN MY ACCOUNT. I have lots of important files...

people , while posting some answers i am seeing something like "wiki community " . what is this ?

Q: How do I upgrade from 10.04 or 11.10 to 12.04?

rakshithI am using Ubuntu 11.10. Please outline the different ways I can upgrade to 12.04.

Oh thank you man @jokerdino
Anyhow.. There are a lot of bugs in the latest release.. Thats what my friend told me..
Don't believe half truths.
06:26
@ShyamK If you're LTS, just wait 12.04.1 (it's like a service pack). The update will appear
shya
@ShyamK i am also running 12.04 , sometimes applications are getting crash . just sometimes not everytime and reports are sending back dev's for solution . hope they will get patches soon .
Well all I did was sudo apt-get upgrade before I went to sleep yesterday. I didn't get time to check it out. Had to rush to the office today morning :) bit of a sleepy head myself (If the upgrade happened or not). Any striking visual changes in the new release?
@ShyamK you did upgrade to 12.04 ??
@rajagenupula I'm not sure. That's why I asked.
sudo apt-get upgrade wont take you to 12.04
are you in 11.10 now ??

@jokerdino Can u suggest a good title. I want to start a new blog.
@Mahesh Hmm
What sort of a blog? Personal, technical.. etc
10:31
@jokerdino @jokerdino why is this required? Also the terminal prompt keeps on blinking after the error message.. Why is that
personal.
Considering that my own blog sounds like a garbage, I don't know whether you should be asking me.
and the title should reflect something like a 'different view'
@ShyamK just install and see if it fixes the problem.
@jokerdino but it does make some sense.
10:33
It does? o.O
hmm... u gotta digest the bitter truth. :P
@Mahesh, call it "My new awesome clog"
My blahg.
Subtitle: Because blog is so 20th century.
(Quoting jrg)
hmm... i'm looking for a single word, with a tagline that goes like.. trying to make sense out of senselessness;
and i've scanned oxford, lightly.
Hmm these things are better resolved when you are taking a shower.

and so i took one, to no use.
ok, theres more water. i'll try it again.
@jokerdino It worked without a hitch.. Thanks.
@ShyamK nice.. it is a missing dependency on gtk theming
@Mahesh All the best!
@jokerdino gtk meaning?
what's gtk? I don't know.
3
ok, searching existing personal blaahgs is a better option i guess.
10:40
@jokerdino Nice!
@jokerdino eh? rofl.
Alright, dinner time. I'll try to finish off my homeworks after that.
you know @ShyamK you could have answered your own question instead of deleting it ;)
and he'd have got a badge.
10:59
Aawh.. now why didn't I think of that.
But will I be able to answer my own question?
@ShyamK Yes
@jrg @MarcoCeppi Undelete for him --^
Hello all
@AmithKK can they do this for me? or do I have to draft a new question?
They can
@AmithKK seriously? or are you pulling my leg? cos I've already drafted a new question.
Never mind I'll post the question afresh
No :|
They can
Their mods
11:12
I can't self answer for another 7-8 hours.. bah!! hambug
@AmithKK Is it wise to answer yoour own question using a comment?
@ShyamK nope
@AmithKK K.. then I shall wait for the 7/8 hours..
got a long wait ahead of me :D

@ShyamK did you just duplicate your question?
11:41
@jokerdino ya kinda..
well, never mind.
got a question about crontab
how to use it?
i never played with crontab.
oh k.. :(
30 bounty questions. Rejoice!
11:53
anyone here ever connected a serial port to be accessed by a VM
12:06
@jokerdino :)
@ShyamK What do you want to do with crontab?
seb
seb
got some problems with ecryptfs. transfered lots of files to new computer, see askubuntu.com/questions/124174/… and now there are multiple folders starting with ECRYPTFS_FNEK...
@NiekBergman was trying to get python scripts to run at a particular time
I did that before
12:19
@AmithKK is that directed at me?
Yes
@ShyamK crontab -e
@AmithKK Yes I did that. and entered 43 17 16 5 * /usr/bin/python /home/shyam/Desktop/python/screenshot/openWebPage.py
that time reads 5:43 May 16 right? Well that was the time I meant to put
@ShyamK instead of using the path to python, why not make the file executable
@AmithKK how?
@ShyamK chmod +x /home/shyam/Desktop/python/screenshot/openWebPage.py
12:23
I did a chmod +x openWebpage.py somewhere
after that edit the file and add this line
lol
yes.. added this line.. still its not working..
#!/usr/bin/python
@AmithKK where does this go?
In the python file
12:25
on top
seb
seb
@AmithKK first line
I had put a line #!/usr/bin/env python as such.. was this not right?
@seb okay I have changed the line as per what you have said.. waiting for the results.. 1 minute left.. :D
the python files look green in color in the terminal .. you know when you do the ls command
@AmithKK nope.. that didn't work..
@NiekBergman Didn't get any advice from you? got any other suggestions?
@ShyamK yes, that crontab entry will execute at 5:43pm on May 16
@ruffEdgz but it didn't
12:46
It probably did... the script might not have worked from the context the cron daemon runs it in though...
@NiekBergman how do I know whether it worked or not?
like is there a log file or something that I may access?
@ShyamK: hold on, let me make sure for you...
@ShyamK /var/log/cron
Yes, firing a webbrowser from cron won't work...
DISPLAY variable is undefined.
12:49
why?
@NiekBergman eh? DISPLAY variable?
jrg
jrg
@ShyamK Yes, moderators can undelete questions.
Try this instead:
43 17 16 5 * DISPLAY=:0 /home/shyam/Desktop/python/screenshot/openWebPage.py
(of course, modify the time now :D)
jrg
jrg
@jacob Doesn't matter, the script fills them in all the time.
@jrg well never mind that now.. I have re-added it :D
@ShyamK: let me know if it works.
12:50
lol
@NiekBergman k will check now
@NiekBergman That was the problem
@NiekBergman perfect.. worked like a charm
so then the other file that I had also out to work if I make the same modifications right? (I had another file for taking screen shots)
@ShyamK: probably.
12:54
@jrg: Is it bedtime yet?
@jrg Sleep is for the dead :P
jrg
jrg
@NiekBergman no, I just woke up. ;)
@ShyamK lol
@JorgeCastro I'm going to test something related to autoupdating comments, i think this might work.
@NiekBergman nah the other file doesn't work.. with those changes
#!/usr/bin/python
import gtk.gdk

w = gtk.gdk.get_default_root_window()
sz = w.get_size()
#print "The size of the window is %d x %d" % sz
pb = gtk.gdk.Pixbuf(gtk.gdk.COLORSPACE_RGB,False,8,sz[0],sz[1])
pb = pb.get_from_drawable(w,w.get_colormap(),0,0,0,0,sz[0],sz[1])
if (pb != None):
pb.save("screenshot.png","png")

Thats the code of the other
will resume this conversation when I reach home.. leaving now..take care all

A: How do I report a bug?

Mahesh The most general, and comprehensive set of instructions can be found at this community-maintained help page. @coversnail Hey are you using the review tool for your edits?
jrg
jrg
Thank you very much! it works. :)
@JorgeCastro he doesn't have access to the review tool, it's a 5K thing iirc
review is a downvote thing
"When you gain the privilege to downvote a new review link appears in the header."
jrg
jrg
oh, you're right.
he "feels" close to strunk and white

16:26
let me put it this way @Mahesh - you managed to wrangle a 50 rep bounty from me. that takes doing, it's an excellent answer! :D
you can probably trim out the top short section though
the other answer on top has that already
but jrg wanted to highlight the ubuntu-bug -w thing.
jrg
jrg
he's talking about the blockquote
sure, you can highlight the existing one
No I am talking about "short version"
but it's fine
/me was being nitpicky
wow, 10k views on that question
jrg
jrg
Oh, see, point 2 was the entire point of my offering the bounty in the first place, since it's hidden in the mess of the first answer... :)
(i've had more than one user say they couldn't find it. i agree, since i had troubles finding it myself, so... I just gave away some rep to make it easier. :))
16:33
and since thats the question we link from pro-forma comments, i've tried my best, with the hope that it will become a source of steady rep inflow. :P
jrg
jrg
I won't argue against you doing that. ;)
:D
but i also thought of linking questions like.. what is a terminal, what is pid? etc. should i??
What is 4chan?
where did u find it?
The internet
16:40
ok, i expected something similar.
16:55

Good Night
@JorgeCastro I'm actually just still doing the Clean Up thing every day, and editing any of them that need it. Pretty much getting allocated the same questions again all the time now though so I might take a look at the review tool :)
