@TheX George Edison, Marco Ceppi and Stuart Langridge did launchpad.net/chromify-osd
@StefanoPalazzo thanks
now it works!
finally
with both off
@Totty good job at figuring it out :D
@Totty I made it an answer, so that others can benefit from it. You can accept it by clicking the green check mark next to it, so they know it worked for you.
now i got another problem
00:09
You should delete your first question, It's unanswerable now
@RebeccaChernoff Ecstatic!
yes, i will do it;
anyway, I partitioned this hd of 320GB in 3 parts, 75GB 75GB and the rest. I would like to install the linux on the first one but i got this error: "no root file system please correct this from the partitioning menu"
@Totty are you sure you are not the problem??? I mean after all when it comes to me and computers. I am usually always the problem\
@Totty
what is on the first partition?
here look like: device: dev&sdb1, type: ext4
74999MB
why so many paritions, why not let UBUNTU handle the partitioning?
00:12
i would like to install linux on 75GB, win xp on the other 75GB and share files in the rest, no installation
you have to install xp first
or it won't work
but this is that I would do...
make your HD all one hard drive again
install xp
shrink it to 75
then leave xp, that i dont have it right now..
then format the remainder to ntfs
if i would install only the ubuntu how would i do?
let ubuntu install side-by-side, on the remaining HD space
and that will give you an option of drive space
if you want to only install ubuntu then you would select the option that says "use entire disk"
or something likie that
00:15
but i cant use partitions and still install ubuntu?
you can...
but you can only have 4 partitions...
you already have 3
and ubuntu needs at least 2
so that would put you at 5
got to go good luck
how ubuntu needs 2? it doesnt install on 1 partition?
Ubuntu doesn't need two, strictly speaking :)
@Totty how much ram do you have?
i dont understande nothing about this. 4GB
4 gigabytes is plenty, if you go to the manual paritioning thing, create a new one, select "ext4" as the file system and "/" as the mount point, you should be fine
If you had less memory, it would make sense to create something called a "swap parition", where applications can store data if you run out of memory
00:20
ok, perfect. with the "/" i will not get the error anymore?
what error?
sorry I was gone just now, just came back from making coffee (at night...)
no root file system please correct this from the partitioning menu
Oh, yeah. What ever is mounted at "/" is called the root file system
ok, thanks ;) now the laptop is hot, I have to wait to install. xDD
00:37
now i have to go, have a good night and thanks ;) see you!
you're welcome, bye

1 hour later…
02:04
@StefanoPalazzo, email just went out, sorry for the delay.
@Rebecca, never mind, I think it's a brilliant idea. plus your email didn't go to spam, and why would it ;-)
shrugs happened to a few of the candidates in the first couple THCs
02:27
hey guys I need some help
I think I borked my install
ubuntu freezes when it loads up
doesn't even dump me to a console
windows boots fine though :/
I think it happened because I was messing around with drivers
*graphics drivers
if I can get to a console I think I can reinstall them
@Shazzner what exactly did you do? (warning in advance, I don't know all that much about graphics drivers)
I installed a ppa for the latest nvidia drivers
but I was having some weird glitches, so I manually installed them
*uninstalled
then I reboot and bam locked out
it just freezed at the 'ubuntu' screen (doesn't make it to the login) and I have to hard reset
I think, I could just reinstall ubuntu but I cannot lose my /home folder
but I have no clue on how to do that without formatting
anyway sorry for all this just a little p-o'ed
Can you boot into recovery mode?
...
you know I don't think I tried that!
While booting, hold the Shift key to see the Grub boot menu, then select what is probably the second entry, something like "Ubuntu bla bla (Recovery Mode)"
02:32
let me try that and I'll report back
yeah my grub works fine
ok brb
don't you want to know what to do when you're booted into recovery mode before you do it? (:
02:44
ok back
failed though unfortunately, for some reason my keyboard doesn't work in recovery mode
tried another one, same problem
huh
No idea how to diagnose that, you may want to ask a question about it
hrm
ok if I boot from a recovery cd, how do I unencrpyt my home folder?
*unencrypt
I think you have to create a new user, move your files over while being logged in as the original user, and delete the old one
there may be an easier way, but I haven't found it
again, ask a question on the site, that'll make it much easier (and also help out others with the same problem)
@StefanoPalazzo yeah
03:42
hello gang
03:55
@TheX: Hello.
@GeorgeEdison hey just the guy i want to see...
can you tell me how to install chromify-osd again?
or not...
I can.
First make sure you have my APT repository added.
which i don't, I just reinstalled ubuntu
because my other one broke
04:04
Oh, I see.
Open the Ubuntu Software Center.
ok
...then go to Edit->Software Sources.
ok
Other Software tab.
Add...
deb http://apt.quickmediasolutions.com maverick main
^--- put that in the box
okay
04:06
Now click OK to all of that and open a terminal.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install chromifyosd-plugin
ok
I have to find the link for the Chrome extension here...
Download each of the 3 files on that page.
ok
When you're done, put 'chrome://extensions' in the URL bar.
...and hit Developer mode.
okay
04:10
Then hit "Load unpacked extension..."
...and browse to the folder with the 3 files you downloaded.
ok
Then hit Open and close ALL Chrome windows.
ok
Then try it out by going to this page.
(Be sure to use an actual URL for image.)
It work?
not sure...
not done yet
I am waiting for some updates to install, I am putting your directions in a text file
04:13
Oh, okay.
hmm I have to work tomorrow...
I should put the instructions online :)
I will send you the text file
then you won't have to type them all again, just modify it to look like you want
if you would like...
no more ip4 addresses as of this morning...
Where did you hear that?
04:20
finally!
they will have to make the transition... maybe I will finally get a new modem... I have only had this one for 4 years now...
> 'World IPv6 Day will start at 0001 GMT on June 8.'
i can't wait, we should have a virtual "World IPv6 Day Party"
It's not often you get to hear a supposed doomsday scenario come true and watch the consequences
@StefanoPalazzo it is not a doomsday...
because ISP still have banks of ipv4 addresses... they just can't get new ones...
04:23
No, you've misunderstood
so once they run out they have to transition to ipv6
IP addresses are the fabric of space, so the whole universe will turn into a massive black hole if there aren't any left
now if Ipv6 fails at some huge scale... then we could be doomed
If people turn out not to be ready for ipv6, they could just take back the massive blocks of addresses they gave to big companies in the early days
@StefanoPalazzo it isn't up to people being ready it is up to the ISP's being ready
04:25
yes, I know (people as in "the people whom it concerns")
oh got ya...
i thought you meant at a larger scale... people like you and i
doesn't PARC have a whole /8 or something like that?
and CERN too
I thought I'd read something like that
who?
parc is Xerox' palo alto research centre (the people who've invented the mouse and the gui), and cern is the place where the www was invented, they now host the large hadron collider
oh... yeah i have heard of both, just didn't know what they where called off the top of my head
04:30
Yeah, I sometimes forget how much of a nerd I am (:
you ever watch silicon valley?
good movie... not sure how factual it is though...
No, I haven't- never heard of it
oh sorry
I told you the wrong name
it is actually pirates of silicon valley
Pirates of Silicon Valley is a 1999 film based on the book Fire in the Valley: The Making of The Personal Computer by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine. It is a made-for-television docudrama written and directed by Martyn Burke which documents the rise of the home computer (personal computer) through the rivalry between Apple Computer and Microsoft. The film stars Anthony Michael Hall as Bill Gates and Noah Wyle as Steve Jobs. Plot In 1984, Steve Jobs (Noah Wyle) speaking to director Ridley Scott (J. G. Hertzler), who is in the process of creating the 1984 commercial for Apple Comput...
04:33
I saw that one
quite some time ago
I remember knowing that a bunch of stuff wasn't quite correct
right but it makes for a good movie :-P
Well I though it wasn't that good a movie either, but I know what you mean (:
you know... the original www had good intentions... it was to be free for everyone...
I'm just about to switch ISPs, and I imagine it's going to be an absolute nightmare
but free it ain't (:
@StefanoPalazzo good luck...
fortunately there is only one ISP here... so even if I wanted to switch, which I do, I can't
04:39
You can barely get anyone to sell you just an internet connection here. They'd all rather you bought a landline, a mobile and some television service as well. And they make you jump through hoops if you don't want to. I could rant about it for hours :P
Of course, no IPv6 either
DoR
DoR
I love Woz. He prints his own 2 dollar bills and spends them.
yeah we have that problem here too...

2 hours later…
06:52
what does md5 /dev/urandom do?
It takes a random value and computes the MD5 hash of it.
oops, lost my shell.
but only after an infinite amount of time
:)
/dev/urandom keeps on spewing out random bytes until the end of the universe, so, md5sum never finishes
@Stefano: Actually, it will terminate - because md5 is not a command :P
Ah right!
06:56
I read that it doesnt terminate. It has to be killed. ON some systems, it stops.
@KaustubhP (assuming you meant "md5sum") it will only stop if something goes terribly wrong, like an out-of-memory condition or a stack overflow
try "man md5sum" (same for sha1sum, sha224sum, sha256sum, sha384sum, ...)
ahh, thats correct.
how to check system-wide resource limits?
in mac you would mayb do launctl limit
07:37
never mind, its ulimit.
good morning, everyone! why do i have a big red icon showing a "1" and linking to askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits at the top of the page?
I have too.
@StefanoPalazzo optimist.
@htorque Have you guys acccepted edits before?
Just wondering if it is related to 2K+ or whatever users seeing edit requests. (I may be making the rep number up)
@jgbelacqua I cant accept edits, because they are not in my control. THey are just "edited" I am at 1100 rep.
Hrm. Well, there goes my theory.
07:46
maybe it's some 10k+ feature popping up for everyone?
My theory is that there is some maintenance going on.
I'm not seeing it.... So, not sure.
someone should upvote the first guy, so this goes out of the 'no answers' pool : askubuntu.com/questions/21059/how-do-you-install-packetfence
@jgbelacqua I just accepted a couple of yours
cool, thanks. Hope they are generally helpful.
Ah! Now I'm seeing the big red/orange circle.
yours are really good!
@jgbelacqua can you approver others' edits?
07:49
@stefano Cool -- thanks.
going to askubuntu.com/review shows a list of quesion that were maybe edite
No, I don't think I even see them.
maybe @jgbelacqua and @htorque had some answers or questions edited :?
Oh okay, i misunderstood you
this is what approving an edit looks like, I think you get +2 rep for it, no?
seems to be a 10k+ user feature
07:51
@stefano yeah, I wasn't sure what would happen with that, since I made an edit, then noticed I left an extra word in.
i couldn't access that page
and had to edit that, too
maybe (but I only saw very few since this feature was announced)
yeah, +2 rep. The interface is nice.
(I mean, that you posted -- I can't see it.)
Wow -- is it 10K?
Do we have 4 10K users yet?
It certainly doesn't say anything about suggested edits on the 10k page at /privileges
@jgbelacqua we have 3 right now, I estimate @DoR will be one in two weeks
07:54
well, askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits directs me to page not found and there's only one feature for me to unlock - 10k mod tools
OK -- I remember someone was close.
he's at just under 9k, and gaining around 500 rep per week
Nice momentum.
Ok, my circle with the (1) disappeared again.
Maybe there was some accidental maintenance.
the reason for it has probably just disappeared
well, it was fun while it lasted.
08:00
You're going to get 2000 soon enough
(can't wait for it, personally; all your edits are excellent, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of them)
Thanks....
need more softball questions.
the boot/hardware stuff I'll leave to you :)
An easy way to get lots of rep is to ask great questions
well, it's not that easy :)
or do it like @JorgeCastro: ask great question and answer them yourself with great answers :D
@StefanoPalazzo because the great question have already been asked before :D
Ha -- yeah, I need a stockpile of those.
08:03
@htorque lol
even better!
i totally did it the wrong way here:

Q: btrfs default file system for Natty?

Klau3Will btrfs be the default file system in Natty Narwhal?

When ever you find something cool, Ask a question about it and answer it yourself (if it hasn't been asked before). You even get the chance of finding a better way to do it
i should have cashed the 15 rep and THEN vote to close :D
hehe, that's devious (:
08:05
ha
I'm going to make some more coffee now. I love my new coffee maker, it's so quiet and quick. I̦'m̟ ̢̹̘̟̙͇o̯͍n̲̟̠͔̲͚͍ m̪̹͕̲͡y̞͠ ̝̝͢ͅe̴i͇̬̬͔̳g̥͈̺̭̪̕h̡̰͉͔̬̳͍t̸̹̦͍s̢͍̖ ̬̰̫̳̻͚͖c̯̲̤͔̹̤u̡̫̭̟̤p̩͓̱̹
:P
mmm coffee.
and your favorite places are the kitchen and the toilette? :D
oh noes, the (1) is there again
@htorque aaaaah! for some reason, this is really amusing me.
yep, still goes nowhere.
(or goes nowhere again)
Should be gone now
is it?
08:17
Yep, it's gone.
Seems the editing system is not kinkless.
Maybe make a post on meta about it

Q: I'm getting the suggested edits notification even though I'm a <10k rep user

htorqueEvery now an then, the suggested edits notification pops up, but I'm not allowed to visit http://askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits so I guess it's a mod tool for 10k+ users.

Ah.
I'm voting that one up at least once.
@htorque what happens when you click the (1)?
(or at least the maximum number of times)
08:19
i guess it's @StefanoPalazzo's fault:
3
Q: Design bug in Editing Review, Notifications don't disappear

Stefano PalazzoUnfortunately, I've foolishly closed the tab before I thought to take a screen shot. I saw a link beneath a question, edit (1), and clicked on it. A notification popped up saying something like that the edit has already been approved. This notification didn't disappear, clicking the link again ...

Link to nowhere... page not found for me.
@StefanoPalazzo I'm getting the "page not found" page
oh okay, add that to the question!
@htorque oh, yeah. that's it.
hehe
Those CAPTCHAs are way too easy!
that one obviously says ἀρχᾓϲ sonfordi
08:25
@StefanoPalazzo Oh boy. Yeah, that's an easy one.
(i hope that's not a terribly rude greek word hehe)
still love this one:
ha awesome!
@htorque ha
I don't even understand the notation :)
I know it's probably geometry, that's it. I'm not ashamed to admit (:
08:44
@StefanoPalazzo Thats Differential Calculus :D Geometry is related to shapes and algebra with equations.
The function when solved will give slope of a tangent at the point x=2pi
I see
I only knew that theta was used for angles, thats why I guessed geometry (and the notation sort of looked like a derivation)
wikipedia will do a better job of explaining. I am scratchy on Math now :P
If that's the slope of a tangent, wouldn't that be a really weird way of writing it down?
hm, i've never seen it written that way - ϑ/ϑx f(x)
It's probably testament to the fact that this was generated by a computer. It may be correct, but it's not right (:
08:52
my main problem with that thing: why is it 'ϑ' and not 'd' - there's only x
@StefanoPalazzo I dont knowwhat to say :/ I am sorry :( Oh, it might be incorrect, but we are jusdt discussing diff calculus :)
@htorque the ϑ stands for partial differentiation..
i know, but why?
Its not a theta, its a ∂
oh, what did i use?
stupid blurry small font
i need to get rid of my CRT monitor
ϑ in this case is (5.x - pi/2)
08:54
it's dark and blurry
i don't understand why it's used - i mean, it's f(x) with only one variable
The function represents partial diffrentiatio of x, keeping y constant.
which y :D
we do not know, because we do not have the complete function, i think.
my head hurts. I guess my head doesnt store 5 year old archives.
well, i have to do partial differentiation from time to time, but i never need to actually calculate anything :D
09:00
Math was never my thang! I love Chemistry!
go away with chem! :D
Give me valency and Normality anytime in college!
you can produce good drugs and bombs with chem. knowledge :D
it's "breaking bad" vs. "macgyver" :D
haha
09:05
Yesterday I performed an automatic security update suggested by the update manager on my virtualized (with VirtualBox on a Windows 7 host) Ubuntu 10.10 installation.

The update somehow failed and left me with an unbootable system. When I try to boot, I am told that various folders, files, and what not are missing. Then the system drops into a busybox and leaves me with an (initramfs) prompt.

This happens with all kernels I get offered by GRUB, although the error messages are quite different from kernel to kernel.
no, that's not unheard of in Windows-land
so, you do get grub showing the menu?
yes, a grub menu with three kernels.
@chessweb at that (initramfs) prompt, can you mount your root partition? mount /dev/sda1 /

Q: I'm getting the suggested edits notification even though I'm a <10k rep user

htorqueEvery now an then, the suggested edits notification pops up, but I'm not allowed to visit http://askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits (getting the Page not found page), so I guess it's a mod tool for 10k+ users.

fiiiixed
@htorque no, tried that, doesn't work.
i now can see that page too
@chessweb :-/
@chessweb: i'd boot a live cd (or an iso, as your ubuntu is in a VM), chroot into the broken system and issue sudo update-initramfs -c -k all followed by sudo update-grub - i'm just looking for a tutorial on how to chroot
@chessweb here you go: help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20GRUB%202 - follow method 3, points 1. - 7. then run the two commands from above
@chessweb i forgot, you can omit the 'sudo' in the commands as you will be logged in as root
10:02
Is there anyway to capture what is visible in the browser, that may span a bit more that one screen, horizontall and vertically?
@KaustubhP yeah, i've done that once via the xorg.conf - something about virtual monitor size (maximum iirc 4096x4096)
I found another question to ask :)

Q: How can I download or install all of the dictionaries?

Stefano PalazzoI find the dictionaries in /usr/share/dict/ quite useful. How do I download (or install) all of them, for every language, without having to install every language pack? Also, if the answer involves package management, how do I remove them again?

How long before oyu answer it ?
:P
I really don't know the answer (:
10:18
Damn, I though you guys are 42s. ;)
maybe because I'm tired or something, but I can't even begin to thing how to go about doing it.

2 hours later…
11:48
Hello everyone!
hello @ilias!
Hello @Kaustubh, how are you?
@ilias I am doing fine, thanks. And you?
12:40
@Kaus
@KaustubhP Yes I'm fine thank you

Q: Which computers are guaranteed to work?

David SiegelBefore I buy my next laptop, I'd like to make sure that it will work perfectly with Ubuntu. Is there a list of completely supported computers anywhere?

I'm thinking dupe of that
14:06
is it possible to convert question comments to answers?
eg., i'm feeling a bit bad about bluntly stealing from allan's comment

Q: Using "Oblivion" color scheme from gedit in Kate

liberiasHi, I like gedit's color scheme Oblivion a lot. Is there a way to use the same color scheme in Kate text editor? I know that configuration files for color scheme for gedit and Kate aren't compatible. I wonder if someone already adapted Oblivion scheme for Kate. Thanks

lol
well, atleast you revealed your source!
i only added the answer to remove the question from the "unanswered" ones - there are a couple of similar questions, eg. questioners answering their question in a comment, etc.
whew, we got a +500 bounty
14:26
the SO guys actually encourage to take all the answers that might be half right and combine them into one awesome answer.
