@RolandTaylor hey, gtalk when you get the chance.
hi all
@RolandTaylor that's got to be PS...you can't possibly have gotten most of those at the same time
also, in reponse to the rm -f/find -delete statement...there's absolutely nothing wrong with rm -Rf in general usage -- it's when people don't understand it, and they do something silly that it becomes a problem.

Q: What are the ramifications of not having a valid partition table?

John AtenI am running Ubuntu 12.04, recently upgraded from Oneiric, on a Dell Inspiron B130 Laptop. When I run fdisk -l it says that my HD doesn't contain a valid partition table. I have been reading a great deal about proper partitioning that leads me to believe that this is bad, but I have noticed no ...

wow!! 4 stars.. :D

ok, i'm here for a quick question.
I am here with no answer
or at least one that won't make sense
I want to try out wordpress, offline. so i'm trying to have a server running on my system. and i'm confused with requirements... :\
@TheX ok, I'm ready to take it even if that makes no sense. it will, probably, some day.
17:26
Okay I can actually help you with that maybe
what have you done so far?
wow thats great!! I've done...nothing.
i have a apache server installed.
and i dont want to try out lampp
lampp is the way to go...
i've downloaded wordpress, and now i want to set it up.
Until JetHTTP catches on... :)
because you are going to have to install everything lampp provides anyways
17:27
Doesn't the second 'P' in LAMPP stand for Perl...?
apache, php, mysql
hmm... then i prefer installing them. coz lampp was not my best buddy.
no...
LAMP is an acronym for a solution stack of free, open source software, referring to the first letters of Linux (operating system), Apache HTTP Server, MySQL (database software) and PHP (or sometimes Perl or Python), principal components to build a viable general purpose web server. The exact combination of software included in a LAMP package may vary, especially with respect to the web scripting software, as PHP may be replaced or supplemented by Perl and/or Python. Similar terms exist for essentially the same software suite (AMP) running on other operating systems, such as Microsoft Win...
and it is actuallky just Lamp
apache cant handle php by itself???
17:29
^--- That's why you had me confused.
@Mahesh It can.
@Mahesh no...
Oh yeah...
maybe...
i don't know
Wait - are you referring to running PHP as a CGI process or with Apache's mod_php?
but you still need MySQL regardless
Because the latter is much faster.
ok, so i go for lampp
17:30
With Perl?
and can i ask lampp to use /var/www??
(You don't need Perl for WordPress.)
you don't need the perl component
jrg
jrg
LAMP = Linux Apache MySQL PHP
Nobody uses perl anymore. ducks
@jrg Yeah, I can't really argue with that.
17:31
@jrg welcome to the party.... a bit late heh...
A lot of glue code for different command line scripts uses Perl though...
...so it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
jrg is always on time. the clock's fast, maybe.
@Mahesh ...or broken...
lol.. :)
jrg
jrg
way to stroke my ego. ;)
17:32
anyways @Mahesh if you use Lamp the rest of the install is pretty straight forward.
@Mahesh You are aware that there is an Ubuntu package that will completely install and configure WordPress for you right?
@GeorgeEdison there is?
@GeorgeEdison NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i'd love to have the job done for me.
There used to be...
Hang on, let me try and find it...
i'm ready with sudo apt-get install
waiting.....

17:34
the wordpress package is broken iirc
sudo apt-get installwordpressforme

but there is a wordpress package.

There is this.
yes, thats what i found. will that do?
jrg
jrg
isn't that broken though?
i've never had success with it
I guess so.
it is just so easy to do it the hardway...
CHARM IT!!! Use the charm :)
17:37
ok, i have no idea what jujuing and charms are all about.
well boys and girls I have to.
Okay, I just had to say that.
I wonder why wordpress wouldn't show up in packages.ubuntu.com ...
I'm basically confused where to start with. i mean.. contributing for OSS.
What programming languages are you familiar with?
and how do i see dependencies from terminal?
@GeorgeEdison I'm kinda good at java, and i can find my way through Python and C
17:40
Python... aha!
Everyone is jumping on board the Python train.
(Myself included.)
What type of software interests you?
@GeorgeEdison That's because Python is built from pure awesome and unicorn blood
I've been spending the last few days on a Python wrapper for the Stack Exchange API.
hmm... anything that is useful. I wanted to help with docs, but that looked boring.
So if anyone wants to make an app with it...
:)
and i'm ready to work with a networking related thingy or ...
some publishing stuff. like openoffice, for instance.
17:43
@GeorgeEdison I saw that. It's nice
@aking1012 Thank you.
I hope to get some examples added soon so people can see it in action.
btw, why is not lampp in repos?
all the component packages are. afaik there's just no pseudo-package that pulls it all in. if you DID make a pseudo-package that pulled it all in, then you would want not to configure it so you don't blow out existing complex configurations. it's my opinion this is exactly what charms are trying to solve
ok. i need to know what these charms are.
@GeorgeEdison are u really a bot?
Not really.

A: How do we solve the package installation problem?

Marco CeppiLike this: George Edison has a script here that adds a button to the Ask Ubuntu formatting toolbar. Note, apps.ubuntu.com is the officialish way to link up applications in the software center as it has fallback for non-Ubuntu users, like this: https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/banshee/...

I'm afraid it's already on my list of things to do :)
I don't suppose we can update the extension to use the fancy new button and all that jazz?

@jrg pointless - correct - refund is in order for this.

oh, i thought you were talking about just a normal linux vm. yeah, virtualbox is nice
@fossfreedom Ok, done then.
20:07
me is VM noobie... so I create my XP VM, pop in my XP CD and install it on the VM? then I can boot into this VM?
@jrg k, the maas team is going to hit up their questions tomomrrow
@rlemon yep - simple as that ... (dont forget to attach your CD in the storage settings of virtualbox)
@rlemon you'll love XP in the box - it's much better there than outside.
Hi all
hi @Takkat
no one loves 11 year old os's
20:12
I made me a bootable image from XP with nlite
I removed all that bloat I never need in a VM first.
But that's more work than just installing from CD.
Ohh how I missed this screen!
lol
the right one... not the left :P
You'll hate it when it asks you to reboot for the first time because you remember it will ask this several times again...
i love quickly closing like 40 tabs and watching chrome try to catch up with resizing the tab headers. :D
20:30
how do I get Virtual Box to recognize the CD in my CD rom
like, after the install it is showing the XP iso in the removable storage drive (in XP in the VM)
how do I add another 'drive' that points to my CDROM
Got to settings -> Storage -> IDE -> CD/DVD and choose the host drive from the dopdown
Yes! thankyou!
Or, while running a machine: top panel Devices -> CD/DVD Devices choose the host drive
you can also add a second device if you need your host and your iso
Bounty offered: How do I modify the pxe config in MAAS? http://askubuntu.com/questions/130772/how-do-i-modify-the-pxe-config-in-maas?atw=1 #maas
20:38
@rlemon btw if you want the intel SATA driver that works for vbox with XP, i think i have it floating around somewhere. iirc there are a bunch of broken links all over the place and it took some searching to find one i could slipstream into the XP iso
@rlemon: bridged network gives you internet access to your VM to let in all those evil Windows guests ;)
ok now i'm having issues with the device i'm connecting via COM
well the usb serial adapter was not recognizing. so I plugged directly into the COM port.
how would I assign this port for my XP VM?
i'm not sure that's possible...maybe someone else has a great answer.

i know there are interesting kits for simulating com ports and the like with named pipes for outside the VM debugging. i haven't taken them apart though.
you need a path obviously...
@Takkat neat....i hadn't seen that before(had not gone looking for it)
@Takkat they are all disabled for me. entire Serial Ports page is greyed out
Why?
if i knew i wouldn't be here
can you do usb-passthrough properly (as in are you in the vbox group?) shot in the dark

Bingo!
gj @Takkat - for some reason i assume people know to do that. @rlemon - glad you got it sorted out
what is my Port/file path?
/dev/ttyS0

not sure but what else... ;)

@GeorgeEdison Awesome. I'm trying to find the new ways to do things with pygtk3. Documentation is horribly lacking on this...
There is a PyGTK3?
I hadn't realized that.
jrg
jrg
@Jorge Pong. What's up?
The virtual machine execution may run into an error condition as described below. We suggest that you take an appropriate action to avert the error.
Ioctl failed for serial host device '\dev\ttyS0' (VERR_INVALID_FUNCTION). The device will not work properly.
21:17
@jrg hey so I am working with github
so I can do a pull request on the comments thing
do I need to do step two with your repo in order for that to work?
@rlemon why backslashes?
forward slashes?
jrg
jrg
Not really no. You can edit files via the github web ui.
wait, lol whut
@jrg ok, this is awesome.
jrg
jrg
There should be a button that says something like "fork and edit this file"
21:18
ok so I was going to trim out the more uncommon ones
Cannot open host device '/dev/ttyS0' for read/write access. Check the permissions of that device ('/bin/ls -l /dev/ttyS0'): Most probably you need to be member of the device group. Make sure that you logout/login after changing the group settings of the current user (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED).
and put them in a sort of "most used" order
ok so how should I go about adding myself to the device group
@GeorgeEdison from gi.repository import Gtk is gtk3. Code completion is woefully broken and a lot of pylint tests don't work because of how they set up module redirection
@rlemon see? it's always that permissions that makes life hard.
21:20
Ah.
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 64 May 15 11:46 /dev/ttyS0
Do any basic examples work?
so Is dialout the group?
@jrg wow dude, that is the coolest workflow
@rlemon dunno - I have no serials here...
21:21
@GeorgeEdison The basic ones do, but any real functionality is limited because the API is still a bit limited and less than mature
as long as what you're using doesn't rely on gobject stuff from 2.x you're safe-ish
@rlemon: I think you can do that from the system-settings-whatever-it-is GUI.
Under something like "users and permissions".
(It's been so long since I've had to do that.)
jrg
jrg
@JorgeCastro :)
@jrg that was the coolest thing I've seen in a while.
jrg
jrg
Does anyone here have any issues with the suggested changes?
@GeorgeEdison something i'm working on uses cairo from gtk2 until they ... make available the functionality from the original cairo library in gi.repository and/or fix the module import redirections so pylint/code-completion works again
