My search-fu is weak today. I've just been handed a 16.10 desktop/server that (obviously) needs to be upgraded ASAP. There's a pretty intricate rats nest of apps and servers running on this and it's not mine. Read: reinstalling not an option. I can't do-release-upgrade because the only upgrade path it sees is artful (I need zesty, and then artful, then bionic).

Everything I've found on the site gleefully tells me to reinstall, or use old-releases (only helps apt, not do-release-upgrade). Infuriatingly, some of those answers are mine. I hate me.

@Videonauth The upgrade tools that Ubuntu uses do things. Transitional stuff and big changes. Unfortunately the upgrade tool is slightly more stubborn than me (keeps rewriting archives.ubuntu.com back into the used sources so short of writing a proxy to huff out the calls, I'm going to do see if a dist-upgrade works.

Debian was always more stable than Ubuntu. Stability is one of its main selling points. Ubuntu tries to find a balance between cutting edge software and stability, while Debian cares about stability above all else.
Ubuntu has super predictable release cycles.
Debian has super concervative release cycles for stable and testing.
