that’s something the man and info pages don’t explain clearly: actually the first option may or may not have a leading -, it obviously doesn’t have to be a function (which -z isn’t). other options can be combined with the first one as usual, but if they are not they need the -, so tar x z -f file.tgz isn’t valid.

My search-fu is weak today. I've just been handed a 16.10 desktop/server that (obviously) needs to be upgraded ASAP. There's a pretty intricate rats nest of apps and servers running on this and it's not mine. Read: reinstalling not an option. I can't do-release-upgrade because the only upgrade path it sees is artful (I need zesty, and then artful, then bionic).

one question why to use .profile to set variable than environment ? is it because .profile sets it for current user and environment sets it for all ?? and what you meant by "you can't return to the default PATH unless you remember what was in it if you edit that file"

@Videonauth The upgrade tools that Ubuntu uses do things. Transitional stuff and big changes. Unfortunately the upgrade tool is slightly more stubborn than me (keeps rewriting archives.ubuntu.com back into the used sources so short of writing a proxy to huff out the calls, I'm going to do see if a dist-upgrade works.

I just feel the question isn't at all "does sed have an exit code" but "how can I get sed to exit with a useful code". The OP even mentions q in the question. So my answer would just be a tangent on something the OP mentioned in a very off hand way in the question ("sed doesn't have an exit code, so...").

So it just feels like posting an explanation of sed's exit code wouldn't be an answer.
