I asked for more storage this new year, and I got an old hard drive
It still works reasonably well, but smart tests clearly show its age

I am developing an app for developers to use, as a part of the configuration, a user will have to set a format to use, in said format the configuration goes like this, you have to set variables with a "$" just before them and then the name. So for instance "$BigG" would be interpreted as a value when printed.

user136984
Is this fairly obvious?

user136984
That is, will most programmers understand that "$variable" is a variable just from the "$"? Or is this not a widely known programming concept?

user136984
It's just that I'm doing the documentation at the moment and I am wondering to what degree I need to explain this to people.

10:40 AM
It's quite well known, yes. It's the standard shell format, and that should be enough already, but is also used in various other languages like Perl, Ruby, PHP, BASIC. . .
In computer programming, a sigil () is a symbol attached to a variable name, showing the variable's datatype or scope, usually a prefix, as in $foo, where $ is the sigil. Sigil, from the Latin sigillum, meaning a "little sign", means a sign or image supposedly having magical power. In 1999 Philip Gwyn adopted the term "to mean the funny character at the front of a Perl variable". == Historical context == The use of sigils was popularized by the BASIC programming language. The best known example of a sigil in BASIC is the dollar sign ("$") appended to the names of all strings. Many BASIC dialects...

morning guys
quick question
I've created a virtual box with ubuntu in it
I want the VB to be able to be reached with a domain name like www.miaou-test.com
issue is I do not have a fix Ip address
more of a dynamic one as I travel often and use the wifi that I can get
I tried to put in the /etc/hosts the ip address and the domain name
but as the ip address change each time, each time , I need to change the ip address in the file
is there a way to say to the host file, regardless of the ip address, use your current ip address for that domain name, www.miaou-test.com?

@AndyK do you need it to be reachable from the host machine only, or from any machine on the internet?

@terdon hi, more on the local network where I am
not any machine
a friend raised the idea of using dyndns.org
but that would prove a bit much for just some testing and developing

But from machines other than the host?

yes from other machines other than the host

10:54 AM
More to the point, does it need to be accessible via external IP or can you use the internal one?

only internal ones

Then use a static IP
You don't care about the external IP (which isn't static), just set the VM up to always take a specific local IP like 192.168.1.42 or something.

I put that on my hosts file
127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.1.1       ubuntu1
127.0.1.1       www.miaou-one.com
issue is cannot reached www.miaou-one.com from another machine
would something like that work?
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 ubuntu1
127.0.1.1 192.168.2.42
192.168.2.42 www.miaou-one.com

Yes, but not in /etc/hosts.
Canonical, in their infinite wisdom, have apparently changed the standard approach of using /etc/network/interfaces and you now need to use something called "Netplan":

@terdon where?

@terdon you're the man

:)

need to read that and implement it
was trying to explain it to some french mates and they did not get it
probably have issue with my french
:D

The basic idea is that you just want to make sure your VM always gets the same internal IP. That shouldn't be too hard. And then you can modify your /etc/hosts so that www.miaou-one.com points to that IP.
@AndyK Ils sont fous ces Gaulois...

yes that's it @terdon
you hear me, loud and clear
@terdon trop fous... -_-

Anyone having an idea how I can find out why my system reports high load average (3.8 for 4 CPU threads) although CPU usage is around 20% and also only low disk or network I/O?

Q: Iptables commands causes crash and hangs the root account

Jeff HuijsmansI'm setting up a StrongSwan VPN server on an Amazon Ubuntu Server (16.04LTS) instance. I am using this guide. I've completed almost all of the steps, I'm now trying to create iptables rules to allow traffic to the VPN server. However, when I run this command: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j S...
