I'm really tempted to build a new desktop computer, my one at home is a little dated now
I'll upvote you
under one condition
that you'll get me to 5k rep?
you must have a working, useful, launchpad lens
right now
Does this example give anyone the impression that I'm misusing popovers? jsfiddle.net/george_edison/HG4u4
then I won't be upvoted
jrg
jrg
00:01
I have never seriously used a lens other than the application one.
I use the ssh lens fairly often
Gasp someone upvoted you :O
I wonder if it was me :D
jrg
jrg
mainly because I just "grep" and "find" my files, google my youtube videos and search in google music for my music. :P
@RolandTaylor if it was you, I hope it was due to the answer being useful
@jrg lol same here except I don't use google music
00:02
@jrg when you've got a few million files, find takes awhile
Can you answer this? Is there a usage count for packages or programs? http://askubuntu.com/questions/118886/is-there-a-usage-count-for-packages-or-programs?atw=1 #packages
@GeorgeEdison JOIN LE HANGOUT
@GeorgeEdison i dont think so.. its fairly large though.
Hmm.... I'm not 100% sure how to change that.
00:06
use the standard hover over star + click combo for rating
Okay, it looks like that's my only option then. Thanks for the feedback.
@RolandTaylor this hangout needs more music
np
@RolandTaylor i'll join, gimme a sec to install my other webcam
otherwise you will be staring at my wall, and occasionally see my cat jump around
ok i'm ready to rock whenever you want to send the invite
jrg
jrg
00:12
I'm missing something.
@lazyPower invited you
@jrg @RolandTaylor Just wanted to formally apologize for the fail hangout.
jrg
jrg
@William no need to.
stuff happens
Doing anything on my computer with parents around is darn near impossible.
However, when I come back from Arizona, I'll be home alone some and can hang out then.

Q: No sound with fresh Kubuntu install

MartynI've just taken the plunge and installed Kubuntu as my main desktop env but I can't get the sound to work, and was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to help me work out what the problem is. I don't even know where to start looking to be honest - I'm not a guru, so please be gentle. I saw ...

Hangout still going on?
00:21
yep
you can join it
*in
ok
might
jrg
jrg
00:38
HOLY WHAATTTT
@RolandTaylor stop it, we'll rejoin
random people are random?
jrg
jrg
@lazyPower we don't normally have this happen.
you noticed ajmitch?
where did these people come from? :)
jrg
jrg
NO IDEA
I thought they might have been your friends :)
jrg
jrg
00:39
@RolandTaylor seriously. Just uh, kill the hangout.
I know none of them.
@RolandTaylor this went out of hand.
that hangout went out of hand, I left.
yeah, I'm heading out again anyway, will see you later :)
jrg
jrg
see you around @ajmitch.
i'll let you know how this goes...
ARGH
@jrg HONESTLY THIS HAS NOTHING to do with me
jrg
jrg
Just kill it. Because the little kids invaded us.
@RolandTaylor i know.
happened last time i had a G+ hangout
and they left
finally
so you can rejoin
jrg
jrg
00:43
i made the mistake of tweeting it, and had a bunch of russians (i think) show up and crash the party
Thanks.
00:57
What happened?
@RolandTaylor there is one working. kinda. launchpad lens
If you want the binary, i can make one and up it to dropbox
jrg
jrg
@RolandTaylor they are invading again!
@jokerdino I wouldn't trust it
@ajmitch it is the one from your bazaar branch.
exactly
01:24
i tried it and it was working. kinda
but mostly not working, and I want to rewrite it but haven't had time to sit down & do it properly
yeah.
there is no scope or anything.
it is not really functional. :?
no scope, because like other lenses the scope is built in, rather than a separate process
So, I'm breaking my computer on purpose
i thought that was a missing functionality :P
01:27
I forced dpkg installed two packages that "technically" conflict with another package but don't actually
where did Marco come from?
it's not really functional because of launchpadlib, if you do a search for something that will return lots of results, it will sit & try & update the model & can't be cancelled
@MarcoCeppi naughty...
Is there a quick way to have those ignored in future apt-get install requests
@MarcoCeppi unlikely, unless you try pinning those specific packages at that version
@ajmitch xbmc-eventclients-wiimote apparently conflicts with xbmc I have no idea why though. Since I'm kind of already half deep installing from someone elses repo I just ignored it
Figured i'm already doing bad things with PPAs, might as well just put the cherry on top
01:28
where are you installing this from?
& I hope you never have to upgrade this system ;)
Some ppa, let me dig it up
and I don't plan on it
once it works I don't think there will ever be a need. Main problem is xbmc team hasn't updated their PPA for 12.04 :\
so you'll never upgrade to 12.10, or maybe 14.04 in the future?
It's a media center pc, I don't really plan on it
Why break something that works?
Maybe I'll upgrade it when Ubuntu TV lands
but that'll probably be a fresh install
Eh, I'll just source the packages and update the Conflicts line, recompile and install
wanders away from chat again
what could possibly go wrong? :)
01:33
@MarcoCeppi cant wait to come see it :P
i'll hijack its remote server with mah droid and force you to watch episodes of metalocalypse
@ajmitch this is the PPA, btw: ppa:nathan-renniewaldock/xbmc-stable
jrg
jrg
well that was fun @lazyPower and @RolandTaylor. Thanks for the fun show. :)
Thank jason for the fun show! he did most of the work
@lazyPower @jrg @ajmitch thanks for joining :D
We'll get streamline in later hangouts ;)
01:38
however briefly
@ajmitch you keep getting into my inbox for those haskell*. WHY?
@jokerdino because your mail is taking weeks to catch up?
@RolandTaylor :) I'll join the next one too
@RolandTaylor Hey man can i join the hangout?
01:40
it probably is, but what is haskell?
haskell is a programming language.
{{Infobox programming language | name = Haskell | logo = | paradigm = functional, lazy/non-strict, modular | year = 1990 | designer = Simon Peyton Jones, Lennart Augustsson, Dave Barton, Brian Boutel, Warren Burton, Joseph Fasel, Kevin Hammond, Ralf Hinze, Paul Hudak, John Hughes, Thomas Johnsson, Mark Jones, John Launchbury, Erik Meijer, John Peterson, Alastair Reid, Colin Runciman, Philip Wadler | developer = | latest release version = Haskell 2010 | latest release date = | latest test version = Haske...
another one?
@jokerdino I just synced a bunch of packages from debian awhile ago
it wasn't a small bunch, i presume
@lazyPower thanks
01:43
@jokerdino are you subscribed to precise-changes for some reason?
yeah
for reasons that my inbox are generally empty
back - but only for a minute
@HotrodJP99 next time we have a hangout I'll let you know
@RolandTaylor Thx man
@jokerdino strange person :)
01:52
@jrg got it. just logged into box and grabbed an auth token. TY for reminding me to include things >.>
Question for the room....trying to figure out how to go about coming up with a solution...I have a Dell Optiplex GX280 and I cannot get the CD-Rom drive to read
It will power up and run for a few seconds but then stop spinning
Do you think it would be Linux Driver related
or an issue with the CD Rom drive?
02:47
@ajmitch grats on hitting 5k.
someone wants to mess with your answer.. askubuntu.com/questions/34572/…
How to reassociate torrent download in Firefox to another torrent program http://askubuntu.com/questions/119579/how-to-reassociate-torrent-download-in-firefox-to-another-torrent-program?atw=1 #bittorrent
03:58
@daslinkard almost certainly not linux driver related
@daslinkard seems more likely to be eye related on the drive.
after installing swarg red theme ucs looks ugly :(
@lazyPower or changed the region code on the drive too many times
I had not considered that
does that honestly play a factor in a drive going kaput?
if thats the case, then I know what happened to this gateway tower then :|
04:02
it can...some drives will say "no you can't change me again" others will just fail
interesting
Drives are dumb like that
@lazyPower my personal best-est solution is a drive that supports a firmware flash for "region free" but it involves finding the right hardware that has a firmware flash available
@MarcoCeppi I could not agree more
that just seems to play into my argument of "Optical media... who uses that anymore?"
I agree-ish. I don't have a TV so...optical drive for DVD/Blueray playback. I know, netflix etc
04:10
you both just woke up aye?
@jokerdino nope, haven't made it to bed yet. its just after midnight here.
@jokerdino about 45 minutes ago from a nap, but yes it's about midnight here too
i see. it is lunch time here.
but, i will probably take an afternoon nap.
@jokerdino I take two naps a day...not real 8 hour sleep
my sleep schedule depends on whether i have lesson on the day or not.
04:14
@MarcoCeppi i watched a live presentation from Jason on G+ about novacut. Holy crap dude
its really coming along. and some awesome innovation using webkit as the UI framework
@lazyPower I've been following that project pretty closely
It's going to be epic when it lands
they are really doing a good job.
Makes 2 of us, only i think i missed some bits.
Does anyone have a tested KDE install method that doesn't depend on kubuntu-desktop. I want to test KDE as a target for something without nuking a default-ish install...kind of like gnome-panel instead of re-install with gnome2

how to fix?
cant open synaptic
04:24
@tachyons open universal access, turn on and off screen reader.
really hope that works
@tachyons soooo sorry. i use apt-get and synaptic whenever possible as long as it doesn't relate to an answer for a question
@aking1012 kde-plasma-desktop?
@jokerdino possibly. I'm shy about anything that isn't tested/ends-in-desktop
@jokerdino thanks ,it worked
@aking1012 tough luck then. :?
04:27
I don't want to deviate from the normal desktop in most ways, I just want to test menu orientation in both without nuking my "normal install". and yes, probably tough luck
@aking1012 what you mean
@tachyons like, I've heard horror stories about kubuntu-desktop interop problems or solutions not working, so I'm trying to keep this pretty vanilla but still get kde as a WM option
it's not kde specific, xubuntu-desktop is the same way
i installed kde and xfce and then removed them the following day.
YAY eclipse works from software center. updating answer
I am using cairo dock session
32 mins ago, by tachyons
after installing swarg red theme ucs looks ugly :(
04:34
Lunch time. :)
how to install eclipse on 12.04 answer updated
@aking1012 create one ppa for latest version
?I don't understand what you mean?
like they did, or something else
I mean can you create ppa for latest version of eclise?
I'm not trying to jump in the eclipse team's space. I prefer a portable install personally.
04:43
@aking1012 Then you're looking for Aptana.
It's based on Eclipse and offers a portable install, IIRC.
@aking1012 I am also using portable eclipse
@GeorgeEdison Aptana, Eclipse CDT, and the eclipse tarballs are all portable
@tachyons The ideal answer will include using the software center but also include an option for a PPA if one exists. – Jorge Castro
If you've experienced otherwise lmk, but I've seen the portable/tar.gz stuff work consistently
Oh, I didn't realize Eclipse offered portable installs.
04:45
The tar.gz is portable
it's in my answer
@aking1012 These days I'm really liking Komodo Edit.
(Not portable that I know of but still awesome.)
@GeorgeEdison Komodo looks nice, but I'm still a little behind the curve on KDE
are there any downsides from installing from the tar.gz and not from the software center? – Decio Lira Mar 7 '11 at 15:41

Yes, there are downsizes: 1 - You lose centralized updates given by apt/Software Center. If all software begins to have buint-in auto-update, we are back to windows world. 2 - Installing in /home folder makes it avaliable only to YOUR user, not to everyone. Installing in /usr or /opt would require root access to install plugins. 3 - You will have to manually create launchers and menu entry. If its not in Ubuntu repos, always go for at least a PPA – MestreLion May 27 '1
@tachyons I agree and I note most of those in the answer. It's a personal preference. I should probably re-arrange so PPA shows up before portable
I even have a "The Preferred Method" that goes against my personal preference
@aking1012 for me too , i really hate entralised package management in linux distros , I like windows style software installation
04:52
I like the benefits centralized management provides. Windows doesn't provide portable installs. I can't move the folder. With eclipse portable installs, I can. Specify a workspace and done.
@aking1012 eclipse for windows is also portable
True...that's the java thing. Well structured java/python/ruby are all portable. MSF took it to a whole 'nother level with ruby portability...
portable ruby install including binary extensions and all that
yeah
05:44
Can you answer this? Using iPad as an external monitor http://askubuntu.com/questions/116912/using-ipad-as-an-external-monitor?atw=1 #monitor
Do you guys think I should remove the additional note here: askubuntu.com/questions/119610/… ? It may sound snarky, but it's meant to be informative.
grats on 4k. the note is fine.
@jokerdino - thx on grats and looking
@jokerdino - Not to bring up a sore point, but sorry we went back and forth last night. Wherever it came from, I'm glad we're being civil.
06:09
heh
it probably is my fault anyway.
I don't want to attribute it to me or you...I just want to get passed it
we have already gone past it, really.
(but I still have the network issues though)
(i'm in ur internetz, steelin ur packets jokerdino)

i have written a little something about why I use Ubuntu - but the Wordpress formatting is annoying..
06:11
@lazyPower Is it cool if I star that lazy?
@aking1012 star away my friend
ideally i would have wanted to put in more images, but it is quite unlikely at this moment
I'm hoping that's a joke @jokerdino ... Life through a broken etc
Not really, i have a private diary which is not broken.
Yay me...is in the number 4 slot in rep league at least temporarily.
06:16
@aking1012 but i was indeed looking for a better sub title
ah, is fixed now. it was going 404 for me for a bit
i am trying to clean up the messed up formatting, but wordpress is wonky again.
@jokerdino If only Ondina were not in private beta I would say switch to cheap django/rails instead of dealing with wordpress
i can't spend on getting a server.
coz i am still a student you see
I understand completely
06:25
well, anyway, me posting the link to the post was to ask for feedback. how is the piece? not too crappy i presume?
it should be getting on the planet pretty soon.
It's a decent piece for why you in particular use Ubuntu. I personally use it for superior automatic driver support.
well, we are different. :)
Very true
actually, you might be right. i haven't tried anything other than windows or ubuntu.
if i have had tried other distros, ubuntu might come out right.
@jokerdino why?
06:32
why what? i just haven't tried.
Ubuntu is much more automatic than say...Debian...on drivers 'just working'.
I don't expect it on something like Arch or Gentoo.
And FreeBSD driver support is for some features painful, although the linux abstraction layer helps a LOT.
now i wonder if i really have to try other distro's
it@school debian was my first llinux distro ,because it was the part of school syllabus
@jokerdino yes have to try
Yes...an LFS box forces you to understand where some thinks go and why.
ubuntu is the simplest linux distro (linux for human beings )
06:37
@tachyons Not saying migrate at all, just saying understand the differences. And I lolled hard at for human beings...
I think it is bad quote because it insulting other linux distros
@tachyons I don't think it's insulting. I understand the point they're trying to make. You have NO idea how many people messaged me on some social network wanting help compiling FreeBSD ports and complained about how long it takes to compile most of a distro from source.
distro from source omg
i am not going to try FreeBSD. not until they are going mainstream.
last week i installed qt library from source ,even it took 1.5 hours
06:42
I am going to stick with Ubuntu.
@jokerdino It is as mainstream as it's getting. They have a very specific purpose. <--Just what I think.
@jokerdino why not other linux redhat ,opensuse etc?
I might put them inside a virtual box.
but i so need a stable connection to download the ISO. :"(
@tachyons Suse is dead AFAIK, Novel went Windows apps instead of a distro. My issue with Redhat is the a)difference in package managers between open/closed(up2date vs yum) and b)CentOS lags so hard in packages
I didn't tried it yet
06:47
I tried Fedora, but...well I've said all this already somewhere
I tried debian fedora redhat dreamlinx and various ubuntu derivatives
but but still stick with ubuntu
@tachyons My current project is getting most backtrack packages to conform to Ubuntu rules enough to be in PPAs. I'm starting with a completely unofficial repo and working from there
Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace. This is a bug, which Ubuntu is designed to fix. Non-free software is holding back innovation in the IT industry, restricting access to IT to a small part of the world's population and limiting the ability of software developers to reach their full potential, globally. This bug is widely evident in the PC industry. Steps to repeat: 1. Visit a local PC store. What happens: 2. Observe that a majority of PCs for sale have non-free software pre-installed. 3. Observe very few PCs with Ubuntu and free software pre-installed. What should happen: 1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like Ubuntu. 2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing features and benefits would be apparent and known by all. 3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time passes.
Ubuntu
Critical / In Progress

feature request...all apps should select ~/ as the default save directory...period
@tachyons That sir, is epic to the maximum point of epicness
shame I can only star it once
That is the #1 bug that Ubuntu is made for.
But I think Apple is helping us in solving it though.
06:56
@jokerdino it is another bug
that will be bug #1000000 i guess
It should move to bug #2 and push all the other bugs back by one due to its critical nature
Or simply replace bug #1 when the original is resolved
bug fix :sudo apt-get remove windows
@tachyons I only keep it around for gaming and exploit dev. When I get a console and a dedicated hackme box, I may remove it completely
07:15
@aking1012 i am not interested in games but i instsalled windws because it is free of cost :D
@tachyons I had to have it for school, then I kept it around for steam games(cheaper than console games). When I'm making the big bucks, I'll make a pwnme box and remove it.
@MarcoCeppi Why not the xbmc official PPA? or even the XBMC's own Ubuntu release?

uhm, i certainly didn't win a swag - i didn't do anything during cleanup week
or at least i want proof
that's the event - i'm not in there ;-)

@htorque yeah
oh, the swag is for all-time contributions
but then:
> I wanted to congratulate you on being one of the winners of the first Ask Ubuntu swag give away. As you probably know we are giving away a 10x Ask Ubuntu swag pack to the 10 top users that contributed to the site's clean up since it started officially.
which i'm not...
09:33
I'm sick
hello all
@htorque quote from where?
@AmithKK hi
private mail from @BrunoPereira
@htorque you contacted BrunoPereira for getting swag :D
this was a bold tag
@htorque what :s
09:38
i'm getting abused by a moderator - again! :P
@htorque just go with the flow, @jrg got me the emails, I sent the form, if someone complains I'll pay a swag pack from my pocket. Till then enjoy your prize.
no. can't enjoy what i didn't earn.
@BrunoPereira I have some complaints :p
@htorque for the bunny love, you did, the scores were taken 2 weeks ago, dont look at it now. 2 weeks ago you were the 11th, Jorge said to pass it to you (he was 5 or 6 or whatever). So we did and you have a prize waiting for you!

@htorque I was just lazy enough to drag it for this long.
@BrunoPereira mean?
what is wrong with you guys?
next they'll ask if they have to pay postage...
09:50
@jokerdino nothing, just for fun
I haven't gotten any wholesome rep for quite some time. Sigh.
Users, please ask easy questions.
they will come when 12.04 is released

@MarkRooney i am hoping they really do.
is this the same shirt maker as for the first swag?
@htorque You don't like shirts made in Bangladesh? :O
Hamster reports that I have spent 40 hours of the last week on Ask Ubuntu.
sure, those kids do awesome sewing with their small hands

I hope I will get 12.04 cd as price If I am eligible , my bandwidth is not enough to download 700mb file

@htorque Its a Ask Ubuntu one, only white available :/
"come on oprah, i don't want another white car!" :D
