Can you answer this? Is there a usage count for packages or programs? http://askubuntu.com/questions/118886/is-there-a-usage-count-for-packages-or-programs?atw=1 #packages
I've just taken the plunge and installed Kubuntu as my main desktop env but I can't get the sound to work, and was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to help me work out what the problem is.
I don't even know where to start looking to be honest - I'm not a guru, so please be gentle. I saw ...
it's not really functional because of launchpadlib, if you do a search for something that will return lots of results, it will sit & try & update the model & can't be cancelled
@ajmitch xbmc-eventclients-wiimote apparently conflicts with xbmc I have no idea why though. Since I'm kind of already half deep installing from someone elses repo I just ignored it
Figured i'm already doing bad things with PPAs, might as well just put the cherry on top

Question for the room....trying to figure out how to go about coming up with a solution...I have a Dell Optiplex GX280 and I cannot get the CD-Rom drive to read
It will power up and run for a few seconds but then stop spinning
How to reassociate torrent download in Firefox to another torrent program http://askubuntu.com/questions/119579/how-to-reassociate-torrent-download-in-firefox-to-another-torrent-program?atw=1 #bittorrent
@lazyPower my personal best-est solution is a drive that supports a firmware flash for "region free" but it involves finding the right hardware that has a firmware flash available
Does anyone have a tested KDE install method that doesn't depend on kubuntu-desktop. I want to test KDE as a target for something without nuking a default-ish install...kind of like gnome-panel instead of re-install with gnome2

I don't want to deviate from the normal desktop in most ways, I just want to test menu orientation in both without nuking my "normal install". and yes, probably tough luck
@tachyons like, I've heard horror stories about kubuntu-desktop interop problems or solutions not working, so I'm trying to keep this pretty vanilla but still get kde as a WM option
it's not kde specific, xubuntu-desktop is the same way
are there any downsides from installing from the tar.gz and not from the software center? – Decio Lira Mar 7 '11 at 15:41
Yes, there are downsizes: 1 - You lose centralized updates given by apt/Software Center. If all software begins to have buint-in auto-update, we are back to windows world. 2 - Installing in /home folder makes it avaliable only to YOUR user, not to everyone. Installing in /usr or /opt would require root access to install plugins. 3 - You will have to manually create launchers and menu entry. If its not in Ubuntu repos, always go for at least a PPA – MestreLion May 27 '1…
I like the benefits centralized management provides. Windows doesn't provide portable installs. I can't move the folder. With eclipse portable installs, I can. Specify a workspace and done.
Ubuntu is much more automatic than say...Debian...on drivers 'just working'. I don't expect it on something like Arch or Gentoo. And FreeBSD driver support is for some features painful, although the linux abstraction layer helps a LOT.
@tachyons I don't think it's insulting. I understand the point they're trying to make. You have NO idea how many people messaged me on some social network wanting help compiling FreeBSD ports and complained about how long it takes to compile most of a distro from source.
@tachyons Suse is dead AFAIK, Novel went Windows apps instead of a distro. My issue with Redhat is the a)difference in package managers between open/closed(up2date vs yum) and b)CentOS lags so hard in packages
@tachyons My current project is getting most backtrack packages to conform to Ubuntu rules enough to be in PPAs. I'm starting with a completely unofficial repo and working from there
Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace.
This is a bug, which Ubuntu is designed to fix.
Non-free software is holding back innovation in the IT industry, restricting access to IT to a small part of the world's population and limiting the ability of software developers to reach their full potential, globally. This bug is widely evident in the PC industry.
Steps to repeat:
1. Visit a local PC store.
What happens:
2. Observe that a majority of PCs for sale have non-free software pre-installed.
3. Observe very few PCs with Ubuntu and free software pre-installed.
What should happen:
1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like Ubuntu.
2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing features and benefits would be apparent and known by all.
3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time passes.
@tachyons I had to have it for school, then I kept it around for steam games(cheaper than console games). When I'm making the big bucks, I'll make a pwnme box and remove it.
Hi everyone,
At the beginning of the beta I linked up Mat Tomaszewski from the Canonical Design Team to work with Jin Yang from SO on the design for the final site. I am posting the design here on his behalf since he doesn't have the rep (yet!)
