hmm
the premise of The Flash is a little unbelievable
the G-Force of taking people along with him would kill people
jrg
jrg
Sorry to butt in, but does anyone have suggestions for open source software logos that college students are likely to recognize?
these aren't compsci/technical students
already have chrome, firefox, vlc, wordpress
jrg
jrg
since those are things that several compsci students I know spread the gospel of in the dorms
it's for a presentation i'm giving on open source software
need a slide with logos of projects they'll recognize
@Seth I don't even remember now lol.
@jrg Chrome isn't technically open-source itself :P
jrg
jrg
there's one person in the crowd who will try to correct me
he's the reason i'm not putting an OpenBSD logo up there
00:13
Lol.
talk about know your crowd lol
nice ;)
Well, lemme try to think here.
@NathanOsman well I can't find one in the snap store for 16.04
@jrg blender, obs studio, gimp, audacity
jrg
jrg
(he's the reason I'm speaking, he got his professor to invite me)
00:13
@jrg audacity maybe? Also GIMP
Chromium is open source. Its logo is different, but similar enough to Chrome's that it is likely to be recognized. If you want to include only logos of open-source software, I suggest using the Chromium logo rather than Chrome's.
7-Zip, Handbrake, Audacity, LibreOffice, ...
Thunderbird maybe.
jrg
jrg
@jrgifford @SwiftOnSecurity Ramen noodles
oh shit
swift retweeted me
son of gun
WELLL
yep thunderbird and firefox
jrg
jrg
there goes my mentions for the next few hours
00:15
I dunno - I gotta remember that I'm not the typical user of open source software.
@jrg Lol, congrats.
jrg
jrg
ah yes, a debian developer replied
@jrgifford android, chrome, firefox, vlc, wikipedia, wordpress
Although Ubuntu has some optional, non-free components, I think it's reasonable to consider Ubuntu to be an open-source project and to include its logo. I don't know if you're looking only for logos that have near-total recognition by Windows users, but if not, the Ubuntu logo is pretty widely recognized.
jrg
jrg
guess i'll do android and wikipedia
@jrg quick! get him to the safehouse! He's famous now
Also, Java is probably the one programming language that an ordinary user would recognize.
00:16
@jrg git, codebocks, python
jrg
jrg
@Videonauth only 1 tech person in the audience
i've been told that they're totally ignorant of tech, so git and python are definitely off the list
Everyone has Java though.
It sits there in the tray :P
@NathanOsman Java is not exactly open source
Sort of.
especially oracle java
jrg
jrg
00:18
it's close
Oracle, yes.
OpenJDK, no.
OpenJDK has official status though, right?
Did anybody mention Linux? The kernel, I mean. Its logo, Tux, is somewhat widely recognized.
Not sure.
Sorry, Tux is a mascot, I don't know if it is officially a logo of the project or not.
jrg
jrg
close enough
00:19
Still I think you could reasonably use it for this.
Yeah.
Yeah, Tux you could probably get away with.
jrg
jrg
@jrgifford Avocado Toast?
k
seems legit
I totally want to start an OSS project called Avocado Toast now
i dont envy you right now swift has a broad audience and the most of em are weirdos :)
FileZilla?
00:20
whoaaaa
I know people in the manufacturing industry using it.
Mark Hamill is in The Flash
Calibre?
jrg
jrg
@Videonauth OMG YES SO WEIRD
apache server
00:21
@TheWanderer yes
Yeah, FileZilla is a good one.
Pidgin? Transmission?
calibre, evince
Actually forget Calibre - it doesn't have a recognizable logo.
I guess they're spending all their money on music and stars instead of effects
jrg
jrg
Well
it got me exposure
about 6 thousand exposures
00:23
NitroShare :D :D :D
jrg
jrg
@NathanOsman there's actually one person who would recognize it
Hey, it is open source.
Oh?
jrg
jrg
i'm giving it at ETSRs school
Not sure if it serves your needs here... but the Wine logo is distinctive.

SLACKER
Lol, yes.
I need to modify my UserScript so that we can have those here.
jrg
jrg
ughhh
someone said i should put the most popular adult content logo on the slide just cuz
@jrg so p*** h**? i doubt that this is open source ;)
jrg
jrg
00:26
i wasn't gonna say it, i know we have people who view this chatroom @ work
but yes
taking notes for later ;)
jrg
jrg
people keep suggesting blender and thunderbird
THE HUB OF PORN
jrg
jrg
guess i should add those
blender is good
00:27
blender is a parade example of open source and cross platform
works on linux, mac, windows and of course on dead badgers
dead badgers?
what happened to toasters?
jrg
jrg
ok, i'm going to call it a day
that slide is already super busy
is teamspeak open source?
jrg
jrg
sadly not
jrg
jrg
00:28
i have it on good authority that the campus has been struck by discord fever
@jrg I do suggest following @EliahKagan's suggestion of using chromium vs chrome
what's the orange one next to Chrome?
I actually recognize all those! Yay me! ;)
@TheWanderer blender
oh duh
WP is OSS?
jrg
jrg
00:29
yup
has been since the beginning
huh
does Java count? :p
WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. To function, WordPress has to be installed on a web server, which would either be part of an Internet hosting service or a network host in its own right. An example of the first scenario may be a service like WordPress.com, for example, and the second case could be a computer running the software package WordPress.org. A local computer may be used for single-user testing and learning purposes. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system. WordPress was used by more than 27.5% of the top 10...
jrg
jrg
I'm not doing Java
fine since everyone on twitter is ragging on me
i'll change the darn chrome logo
ya'll are pedantic freaks ;)
4
CHANGE IT
@jrg duhh
@jrg an proud of it :P
jrg
jrg
00:32
TBH i'm surprised that message doesn't have like, 10 stars already
don't, i probably shouldn't have used the word "freak"
ban urself
jrg
jrg
I don't think we can
seth
can you ban me?
yes
jrg
jrg
really?
jrg
jrg
00:33
does it like... do anything?
you can just rejoin though
because you're a mod
but it involves removing the systems in place to prevent it :P
jrg
jrg
oh yeah
I'm pretty sure you could just undo it
well i highly doubt anyone here will flag this, this is by far the most relaxed chat on the whole SE network i have been in yet
jrg
jrg
00:35
yeah we're pretty relaxed but our few rules are very... rule-ish.
HOW DARE YOU SIR @VIDEONAUTH
either way, I only suggested changing the chrome logo to avoid the pedantic freaks in your audience.
Not that I'm not a pedantic freak, mind you :P
jrg
jrg
uh-huh
jrg
jrg
i see
yup
00:37
#
you yourself said you'd have to deal with at least one :P
jrg
jrg
I really need to work on my meme organization tool again
that took me a full 45 seconds to find
mine's just a google doc
jrg
jrg
used to take 15
Oh I custom built a webapp
@jrg I want
jrg
jrg
00:38
cost a fortune to run since it did OCR of my memes so i could search text (gifs I had to type in the captions by hand)
oooh
that's smart
That is remarkably impressive.
I wish I had thought of that
jrg
jrg
it ran locally and synced the images to an s3 bucket
I just have short URLs set up for imgflip :P
jrg
jrg
00:38
but it's been broken for a few months and i'm too busy to fix it...
slinks back to his google doc pinned in the bookmarks bar like an amateur
jrg
jrg
seth
don't be ashamed
i once was like you
and then i realized that i could have GIGABYTES OF MEMES
so now my Meme folder in dropbox weighs in at 1.18GB
i'm in a race to 2GB with a former coworker
the rules are they have to be high quality meme content
no duplicates in our respective collections
want me to share the doc with you? I bet it has some you don't have
@jrg oh ouch
how do you check that?
jrg
jrg
I have SO MANY giphy (number) copy.gif filenames
by hand
o_O
jrg
jrg
00:43
Hands down the pride of my collection
I hand wrote that meme
HAHAHA
when you pause a game to chat, then accidentally end it without saving when you come back...
jrg
jrg
This has so many practical uses
just as a gif in general
like "BAM, I did this" or "BAM, you got owned" or "BAM, that happened" or "YEAH!"
@jrg do you have this one yet?
jrg
jrg
00:44
no
not tech related, but so good.
jrg
jrg
how do i not have that
that is beautiful
@Seth I love that one
jrg
jrg
it's like the matrix
it's just so well done
jrg
jrg
00:45
but with SINGINGGGG
@jrg HA! so like the matrix.
"The HILLS are aliiivve with the sound of GUNFIRE"
jrg
jrg
I try not to use this one too often
so relatable
jrg
jrg
it's got a use of about ~3 times a year
@TheWanderer if you want to hear that, my buddies house during hunting season is that alllll day
00:46
My phone is waaaaaay worse.
either I can't spell, or my spellcheck is drunk. isn't relatable a word?
I have hundreds of memes on my phone.
jrg
jrg
he's at the end of a valley and he hears EVERYTHING
00:47
And it takes minutes to look through them all.
@NathanOsman People know me as the guy with all the memes on his phone.
Speaking of which..
And Facebook's Android app doesn't even let you browse by folder. >:(
I hope I set Google to auto backup those meme folders D:
00:47
plz no pepe
jrg
jrg

Yeah no pepe
lol
pepe is out?
why tho
jrg
jrg

nazis
you know that was 4chan being 4chan right?
yes
jrg
jrg
00:48
rephrase that as nazis being nazis and you're right
it just so happens that venn diagram is pretty darn close to a circle
I like this one. An old favorite with a newer twist
jrg
jrg
AH
it fits his personality so well in the show xD
jrg
jrg
that's a good one @Seth
00:50
I forgot I had some of these
anyone recognize this guy?
you lose them without continuous use
like language
exactly
jrg
jrg
k signing off for a bit
@jrg laterz
memes == language confirmed
@Videonauth lol
jrg
jrg
i've still got ~50 slides to make before 4AM tomorrow when i start driving to the lecture
jrg
jrg
00:51
yeah yeah i know plan ahead blah blah don't procrastinate
@jrg no no, you're doing it wrong. You're supposed to finish it in the lecture before yours
unless yours is the first.. then you're just stuck
Yeah :P
jrg
jrg
@Seth lol I'm the first one of the day
@jrg I'm sorry xD
Then finish during breakfast.
00:52
"Alexa, dictate" in the car
(is that a thing?)
jrg
jrg
it's 8PM now > sleep by 10 > wake up at 4 > drive 4 hours to the lecture > hope I have an hour breather to go over them in a nervous panic > BAM > lunch
I KNOW
@Seth Android Auto could let you use Assistant
During autopilot >:)
"OK Google, write a note"

Sadly my tesla owning friend is not on good terms with me these days
jrg
jrg
otherwise i'd totalllly ask to borrow it
@jrg is that because you stole their tesla?
jrg
jrg
@Seth I wish.
I said one of his startup investments was "stupid, uninformed and going to go out of business within the year"
4 months later i was proven right and i think he's hurt :P
00:54
I hate friends that can't handle the truth
This one is for @TheWanderer:
@jrg a little harsh
I also hate that English has taken words like love and hate and destroyed their meanings.
@NathanOsman that's PhotoShopped
jrg
jrg
00:55
eh. more of a slightly-deeper-than-acquaintance relationship
@TheWanderer doesn't matter, still funny
can one of the mods open a chat with a low rep user for me --> askubuntu.com/q/981523 the comments there get ridiculously long
jrg
jrg
i think i've got that, i will bookmark and come back to it
Ctrl+D!!!!!
done @Videonauth
I really need to put more thermal paste on my CPU
and maybe clean out the heatsink
00:57
@Seth thank you very much
so my V20 seems to be failing
@TheWanderer big surprise
and someone at XDA offered to send me a Nexus 6 in January
who was given to them by another employee of XDA
it's like the XDA Phone :D
@TheWanderer (non sarcastic) big surprise
nice
it also supports RAW capture, so that's nice
hopefully my NAND or whatever doesn't give out before then
lol

OK, CW, that's a good move
01:30

how to mount an encrypted drive from an USB stick?
01:42
@Videonauth It's a LUKS container?

Q: Mount encrypted volumes from command line?

chaIf I have an encrypted external disk (or an internal disk that is not in fstab), I see an entry for it in Nautilus -- with an entry like "X GB Encrypted Volume". @Videonauth Wait, the USB drive itself, with the exFAT filesystem, is what's encrypted? If so, that wouldn't likely be in a LUKS container and neither of those questions would help.
Oh, never mind. I just saw the screenshot in the other room. I'll move there.
nah he has an old HP laptop which has 11.10 on it and this is encrypted, the stick is a simple USB live of 16.04 and he just successfully mounted his exfat drive where he want to copy to

Every time I see @SwiftOnSecurity RT someone I think "wow, lucky" and then it happens to me and the reaction is 100% "AHG NO MY PHONE NOTIFICATIONS AHGGG"
that got RTed by swift too.
i should never spend ad money on twitter again
and just figure out how to get swift to RT whatever i'm selling
my phone is still buzzing

arg, they added a strict RFC json filter and it's breaking all the requests library usage i'm using... evidently I need some of that duct tape.
you know where the word "patch" came from in computer terms?
it just irks me that the requests library doesn't ensure RFC compliant JSON.
03:43
fixed it. i just had to use a different pattern.

request(uri, formData, method, (err, resp)) pattern wasn't working, so i tried
request.post(options), and somehow it generated different json...

Nope. Build fails.
I swear the site is trolling me hardcore. Literally every. single. year. I get a gold badge ~1 month before winter bash. 3 years in a row.
Just got one for this question askubuntu.com/questions/406166/…
but during winter bash.. nope. DENIED.
:D
be lucky that you came onto the site as there have been actually still plenty ofanswers to give now were left with only questions like "halp wifi is not working" or "halp i screwed up and dont know hot fo fix it"
or such ones where you spend actually about 6 hours for finding an answer for it and it wil not pay out :askubuntu.com/questions/981263/…

@Videonauth This seems like something you should have done before even beginning this conversation:
@dessert all drinks didnt help i was near screaming at my screen here ;)
@Videonauth Next time just advise him how he can give you ssh access and do the stuff yourself. ;D
bonus points if you have read through the hole stack of messages
yes i thought about that lol
would have been done in 1/10th of the time
if even so much would have been needed
@dessert well, if that wouldnt take another 10 hours lol
just to enable SSH
@Videonauth I'm not the masochist type of person.
