i am back
@jokerdino good. i think i handled that the right way...give it a look
you are the man
thx. i try
Jorge was seen 9 hrs ago.
I'm still not comfortable walking on his edit
He'll see the tag when he gets back and decide
11:07
@jokerdino : seen 1m ago, talked 10h ago
@badlearner It shows 9 hrs for me too
@badlearner he just has his chat tab open, he is not active
oh... hmm
@badlearner ^--
Hello all
11:10
@AmithKK hi
Hey @aking1012
someone caught my rant
does that mean @Oli is around? maybe he is comfortable with that edit
Borked
I'm in a constant state of borked...not to worry
11:25
Just putting it out there...seems like a bug report askubuntu.com/questions/117583/…
hi @fossfreedom welcome back
hey @fossfreedom
hi ya.
you guys have been busy!
lots of flags to work through...
thanks!
Type in xkill
@badlearner Do you know if this is a semantic difference that doesn't matter or worth editing?
@fossfreedom ^
... put the edit in - lets have a look.
11:30
it's a tiny change to make the answer look more like the man page/generally used syntax. I edited. Feel free to roll it back
it's an apt-get -f install versus apt-get install -f thing
... I personally use install -f ... and this is more common on the site.
like i said, feel free to revert it
@oli edited the meta post.. please update your comment so I don't look like a jerk. :P
... I wouldnt worry - no need for another edit.
i just didn't really want to walk on Jorge's edit, but the man page gave a specific order and it confused somebody
11:34
aking, stop getting anxious.
which meta post?
@fossfreedom so it works the other way...good to know

A: Changes to how we close abandoned questions

Olicommented: We're neither running away or throwing everything back at the community. We picked abandoned questions because they're low-priority and should be something that people can agree on to close together (or answer). The point of this is that as we grow, more and more moderator time will be needed to deal with spam, duplicates and off-topic questions. We need users to pool their close votes to target things like this.

agree with Oli - its a small step back ... we are trying to encourage others to work together.
its getting more important...
with 12.04 around
... more focus on the site
this problem is a vicious cycle.
11:38
... vicious?
less people with privileges -> less people with privileges
if you need me to vote to close something just tag me. I'll be around
looking forward ... we have a growing number of +3K people...
@aking you should be in the other room.
...we should try to encourage others to step up.
11:40
er...I'm not a mod
not yet.... :)
Hey @Takkat
Hi all
11:47
Upgraded my netbook from 11.04 to 11.10 to be ready for 12.04. I am so disappointed.
I upped the lappie already...it wasn't so bad once everything stabalized. Not ready for the desktop yet
Not a single problem. All went just smooth.
3
A: How do I download old unsupported packages such as Kernel headers?

enzotibcommented: So why do you accepted the other answer?

LOL
Apply custom Gnome-shell theme for all users http://askubuntu.com/questions/117566/apply-custom-gnome-shell-theme-for-all-users?atw=1 #gnomeshell
@Takkat It went smooth-ish for me...there was a period where I was getting a crazy number of errors, but it stabalized on reboot
11:50
My disappointment comes from that. Not a single problem to overcome.
Now all ist just the same as before.
oh dear, i hate posting stupid and wrong answers. :(
... its right ... +1
it is not doing it right?..
i'm leaving that one alone
Where can I approve edits
12:01
wait, so the answer is not wrong?
@jokerdino Ywp
... its correct - why someone wants to use 9.10 is another question!
i agree that it's EOL and my kneejerk is to say 'do not use an old OS', but I'm just staying away from it
I don't touch questions older than last LTS regardless
Sometimes there is no other way if you need a deprecated software.
But then why need such a thing ;)
There is that. Deprecated software is just another way to say "I'm going to have problems soon"
12:05
lol
bah, 3 upvotes means i can't be wrong after all. heh
Some people are not happy when there are no problems (like me).
that's me.
@Takkat See, I'm the other way. I think it should just work...and I'll do everything in my power to make it so. Install instead of update etc...I enjoy solving them, but I'ld rather take preventative measures and do it right the first time
that is so boring.
12:08
Preventing problems is a problem by itself ;)
The man speaks truth
I already have my brain plugged with backup and partitioning for my new system that I have not even money for...
(first step to save money for a hardware upgrade to get rid of the brain plugs)
okay i need a nap, so afk. i'll check messages when i'm conscious though
Coffee is better for that purpose ;)
Reminds me of coffee...
12:14
They only want it hidden in fullscreen?
yeah..
That may be not easy - but I do know nothing on GNOME shell.
Hello @jrg

i was just taking a cheap jab :P

We're here, we're dealing with flags, etc etc etc. However, what we're trying to do is move from a "moderator handles it" culture to a "community handles it, moderators are the human exception handlers" - thats the way it supposed to be.
No point in putting that as a comment, since we're both talking to each other here. :)
So, Its like giving everybody the power to affect when there are 6 super-powered people around if we falter?
jrg
jrg
Yup.
FINALLY!
well, actually, i just wanted to note that downvoting is just as effective. and i had to give some context.. :P
Someone realises that
12:43
it went a little weirdly..
jrg
jrg
It is, but downvoting is also somewhat rude. :P
@jrg I left you sime irc pings
jrg
jrg
I saw one irc ping @AmithKK
@jrg downvoting abandoned... come on!! no damage done really
jrg
jrg
Unless say, in 4 months the user comes back because guess what! They have another problem.
@jokerdino let me put it this way.
If you want to do that, go ahead. :) However, I personally don't think its a good idea.
12:48
if i downvote, the question will be deleted..
gives me super powers
but i don't downvote often either

Q: Chromium / Chrome white persistent rectangle. A bug?

HanynowskyAfter using Chromium or chrome for a while (10 minutes..), a blank rectangle pops up and gets sticky to the left top of the screen. There is no way to kill it unless I reset unity : unity --reset or I log out. The popup remains above all other windows (CTRL+ALT+D) does not have any effect on...

Its a bug, it has an accepted answer, hm.
It is not off topic. It is asking it is a bug or not.
... or it is o/t
jrg
jrg
i don't know. :S
@jrg IRC ping
Anyone know if there is a fix for this ?

Q: Unity desktop and mouse sensitivity

Eric SepichI keep accidentally moving the mouse too far to the left of the screen which brings up the unity "taskbar". Is there a way I can disable mouse over and strictly use the "function/windows" key to bring up that taskbar? It's kind of an annoyance to have it come up inadvertently all the time. Not to...

13:17
@bodhizazen taskbar is launcher?
if yes, i can answer it
That would be my guess
They indicate moving to the left ...
Great , thanks
hi all
why isn't it good to have 0 bytes left on your main hdd?
because Ubuntu warns me if I have less than 1 gb left, but WHY? there must be a reason for that...
I do not know about the 1Gb threshold, but Linux (ubuntu) is going to want to write to the logs, apt database, download packages when you update, etc
@bodhizazen askubuntu.com/questions/96410/… this question is for unity-2d, but i have answered for both unity and unity 2d. does it work?
@bodhizazen yes update stuff my casue problems,
but if you are just running it without updating or doing anytrhing
13:23
@Alvar still writes to logs
there must be a reason except for the practically..
@bodhizazen what logs?
1 Gb is a huge threshold for that, but 0 ..
@jokerdino - yes
so.. what do i do?
/var/log/
@jokerdino I would say , close as dup, I will start ..
@bodhizazen aha, that's not as many logs as I would have thought... just 30 or so..
is there a command that can tell how many files there are in a folder?
13:26
BBL
how may files or how big they are ?
how many
come on! it's been 31/3 for a while, and now when it's here!
it has been moved! GAH :P
@Alvar find /var/log -type f | wc -l
hmm.. it says 262, but I can only see like 30-40 with ls
13:37
@Alvar because find is recursive
find /var/log -type f -maxdepth 1 | wc -l
aah
btw, u need sudo to be able to run find on /var/ ... :)
From my experience with the forums it will take some time
jrg
jrg
As I just said on meta, there is simply too much red tape between SE and moderators for a community council thingy to happen right now,
13:39
hope one day, it will
@Alvar I do not need sudo to run find in /var/log here
jrg
jrg
maybe someday, when we can figure out how to share stats without A. abusing the API or B, disclosing information protected by the NDA, we might be able to do it.
we can just use stats that are visible to everyone.
@bodhizazen not that, but u need it to use the "find" command in those areas
because they are read only..
jrg
jrg
figure out a easy, reliable and reproducible way to do it, and we might be able to.
13:42
has anyone here got a system76 computer?
looking at the Ubuntu forums thread about it, it seems promosing...
jrg
jrg
lol. "the agenda of Unity". XD
@jrg we can use a mix match of criteria, like rep, badges, edits and votes.
meta involvement and the quality of answers ofc.
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino I'm interested, write it up in a gdocs or something when you have time, and I'll present it to the rest of the moderators. (and then move to SE, and then meta)
@jrg I wasted time reading it last time.
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino hehe. I have to agree, it is a waste of time.
13:50
@Alvar System76 has a great reputation for customer support AFTER the sale
but a bit overpriced, IMO
and others
@bodhizazen overpriced? I would say the oposite...
they're cheap!
Then go for it
I've looked in Sweden for similar computers and could just find those for 400€ more...
You might want to look at other vendors first, many sell linux pre-installed, prices fluctuate
@bodhizazen true, but I don't know where to look
my max price is around 1200€ or so..
system76 has a great customer support, I asked them about Swedish keyboards, they answered within the next half hour!
13:53
At least compare to zareason
system76 has that reputation
@bodhizazen they are kind of expensive... and not as good as system76... got anymore suggestions? :)
I can't get rid of the cd/dvd reader...
and the ram i 1300mhz only..
sounds like system76 is the winner
hehe...
I only know to companys that make linux laptops, are there more?
14:18
@jrg Added you to the document..
jrg
jrg
Cool. thanks
Oh, I think you misunderstand the problem I mentioned (which is ok, in retrospect I didn't go that good of a job explaining). IRC?
14:32
hi all , can anybody tell me if there is a banner of ubuntu 12.04 release countdown to put on google+ or facebook?
and if there is where can i find it?
thanks
14:50
Is there any Ubuntu software that emulates the sound of a mechanical drive while Ubuntu is running out of an SSD raid?
jrg
jrg
Hangon
@BrunoPereira that is a really weird question, the answer is "yes".
let me pull it up
jrg
jrg
15:07
@BrunoPereira something like this
play -c2 -n synth whitenoise band -n 100 24 band -n 300 100 gain +20
you'll want to play with it a little bit, but that sounds like my fan (not my hard drive unfortunately)
Can you answer this? Cannot hear any sound from headphones after 11.04 upgrade http://askubuntu.com/questions/43034/cannot-hear-any-sound-from-headphones-after-11-04-upgrade?atw=1 #sound
@jrg That is the Star Trek Enterprise spaceship sound!
jrg
jrg
Sounds like my fan to me.
Oh wait, nevermind dangit
i'm on mute
:P
Get me a Star Wars themed sound with play and I will be happy
jrg
jrg
I was like "OMG THIS IS SO AWESOME IT SOUNDS LIKE MY FAN!"

But it really was my fan. :P
15:09
lol

jrg
jrg

jokerdinocommented: Lame test comment.

jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira try and argue that they don't deserve what the query is for - you really can't. (granted, they might not want to, but it works)
AHHHH YEAH. Thanks @jokerdino

@htorque Was just trying to make the gf work with a USB mobile wireless modem so we can chat and see each other online, she said "Why didnt you just installed Windows before I left?", I hanged up the phone and when for a shower.

A: Bazaar issues while installing Ubuntu TV

jokerdinoSeems like you have problems with your bzr configurations. I used to have these problems because of a network firewall and I just have to do away with my bzr configurations. You can try these steps and see if it works: mv .bazaar .bazaar.backup/ Doing that would give you a fresh configuration...

I need your upvotes. That answer works for me.
Thanks.
jrg

Ok, i'm going to upvote once, downvote once, and then you'll be at 5K.
And then you can get a screenshot. ;)
