How do you add "open in terminal" to the right-click mouse menu for folders/directories? http://askubuntu.com/questions/117452/how-do-you-add-open-in-terminal-to-the-right-click-mouse-menu-for-folders-dire?atw=1 #nautilus
all i was getting at is that I'm a bit outspoken and I could possibly have come across times when I needed to be overprotective of my posts
i understand you
thx...making sure I wasn't being over-riding. I just thought I needed to be clear
you are too verbose.
yes. i am.
00:24
HALP! I can't update anymore.
why did you make red all the PPAs in the middle but none of the fails at the end beginning with google-talk
I'm not trying to be difficult, just asking
I chose bash as a syntax, blame it
brb, i need to reboot to fix this lagging gnome-shell
okay, i'll be around
ok, i am back.
i'm touch and go on the at keyboard thing, but if you have a question i'll be around
00:36
i can't successfully do a sudo apt-get update now
are you sure you've got a solid internet connection? given previous comments I believe this might be the issue
what is a solid connection?
paste.ubuntu.com/908067 no colour one..
my personal solution on my own desktop would be to run apt-get update until the 'Failed to fetch' updates fetched
I'm confident they will barring some interwebs anomaly
i got no idea what happened. i think i messed up the apt files really bad
I'm sorry for laughing I REALLY am
jrg
jrg
00:43
Can you pastebin your sources?
@jrg he has
dude, my IQ is really down now. guide me along.. zzz
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison I built a quasi-useful SE inbox notifier earlier - apple.stackexchange.com/questions/46831/…
No, his actual /etc/apt/sources.list
@jrg - oh that's my bad. I thought it was fairly obvious from the pastebin
00:45
I just cleaned them up.
jrg
jrg
Things aren't always what they seem when it comes to apt stuff. :)
he's got WAY more in his apt.d than that as far as ppas are concerned
jrg
jrg
Lets go through things one at a time, from top to bottom.
i just unchecked all the PPA's. after the apt-get update and before /etc/apt/sources.list
okay my argument is invalid
jrg
jrg
00:49
Weird.
did you try again?
(after unchecking the ppas)
i get the same error.
i am trying this now - askubuntu.com/questions/30072/…
and that fails even more
Saw this on hackernews in the wordpress story
actually, wait. i get lots of upgrades after the last one.
but i can't download them. connection fails
"are you sure you've got a solid internet connection? given previous comments I believe this might be the issue" -- so convinced it's a weak update bandwidth thing or a dependency hell thing
:'(
i guess it is the firewalls. bah
00:52
I'm sorry, but it's true. Bandwidth seems more likely until you get everything synced
Just eliminate it piece by piece
how do i do something about the bandwidth?
You don't, you resolve th sync issue then describe what happens if it still fails
how do i resolve the sync issues then?
Keep trying to sync
There are people on with WAY more rep than me. They're welcome to jump in at any point if I mess up
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison I wrote a hackish SE notifier earlier, is this worth putting up on stackapps?
@aking1012 rep means nothing in this instance.
its all about experience - you've been here before, so you know what works.
01:00
this is true...I was just pointing out that I might be less qualified than other attendees and that I wouldn't be offended if they jumped in
it doesn't matter as long as i don't have to leave ubuntu before midnight
@NN I am waiting for you here.. :)
I'm sorry @jokerdino to me it really sounds like bandwidth issues to me. If it syncs and you're still having issues ping me with a tag
It fails.
/precise mainline repos should not fail. give it time
let's see who has the last laugh this time
01:08
I'm not laughing. I'm just saying
keep syncing eventually it will work
01:24
It fails :(
I am going to try something else now.
srsly, I'm convinced that eventually it won't
okay, hope it works
hi @lazyPower
Whats up @aking1012
not a lot...working on some goofy cross-compile stuff and trying to get a zero to hero eclipse site running
nice
Enjoying a Gin & Tonic after a week from hell.
@lazyPower epically true
/me thinks that a site of that type would eat a lot of askubuntu/stack questions
01:30
ponders
what exactly are you referring to?
the eclipse site
how do i add include/lib dirs
how do i add a custom toolchain(cross-compiling was my issue).
how do i add lib X.
how do I compile against native with eclupse.
I think it's more about easy than google eclipse CDT
i can confirm that it is more likely a network issue than a computer specific issue.
Ahhh i see.
That sounds like a solid resource to have. Are you doing it wiki style so it can evolve as the platforms evolve?
@jokerdino good. wait for it...wait for it... muscho.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/…
01:34
oh snap
@lazyPower it's possible. I'm more looking at videos atm
i see
It still hasn't finished loading in here...
@lazyPower like eclipse for a gcc -X guy
nods nods
01:53
Oneboxing works for comments now. Hurray!
02:05
@jrg: Sure - that would be welcome on Stack Apps.
02:23
hi all , is there a banner to countdown when ubuntu 12.04 will be release to put for exemple on google+
and if there is where can i find it
@user49523 so far I can only a Lubuntu 12.04 countdown widget..

Q: Has man walked on the Moon?

RabskatranIs there any concrete, solid proof of this space odyssey? Is there a way that I personally have a look a it? Let's say, with a nice telescope ?

I love the comment there:
> "What moon?"
Pfft skeptics.
I liked "there is no moon" it begged a "there is no spoon" reference
The moon is a lie.
I lost hope in Stack Exchange when it launched skeptics.
I like skeptics. It's a logical continuation to a trend
Off to play some MW3...have fun guys

Amith KKYou cannot install USC 5.0 easily on 11.04 It will cause unmet dependencies and make you hold broken packages

+1 Please

Q: How to intercept all keystrokes

greggory.hzFirst of all, I don't expect that something like this already exists, but I am interested in knowing how something like this would be accomplished. I want a program that I can have running in the background that will intercept ALL keystrokes entered (I'm assuming X is running and perhaps even th...

I have a comment on that one now
never ceases to amaze me how much "could you write an app for me so I can sell it" we get
have i mentioned i'm currently two-timing python with coffee. i love them both so much i just don't know what to do
@aking can you edit this question - askubuntu.com/questions/117486/how-can-i-change-my-desktop-bar - it makes me read all the unnecessary part. i would edit but i am too hungry
goes off to have some lunch.
XD
05:00
I don't even know what that guy is asking...I'm happy to edit it, but I don't understand his question
I did my best...see if that helps
ok back from lunch
I think I edited that properly...do check. I'm not horribly sure, but I think that's what he was asking
Wow, just read the whole thing again. What a mess.
Yeah...I tend to leave the original and just top post an edit
I wasn't sure what he was asking, so I was REALLY sketchy about deleting anything
it seems like a weird issue when he uses the menu from the top panel.
never mind it, i am moving over. Uri seems to have a good comment.
05:15
Yeah. If it was an answer I would upvote it
i would upvote a comment if is good.
Just did
05:31
@jokerdino - any ideas? askubuntu.com/questions/117536/…
What's the question, I don't think I quite grasped the essence.
Let's see what I understood.
Say I have a media player, be it vlc(the most complicated instance since it will open multiple times by default).
or whatever else
(you can prevent vlc from opening multiple times)
I know
Is there a universal setting that applies to ALL media players to do this
to?
don't they do already?
05:35
Mostly
let's take rhythmbox for example.
I'll just delete it since I can work around it. The use case is that I want to programatically dock windows where I want them and prevent them from opening without goofing about beyond some gconf settings. I know I'm asking a lot
if you can get a workaround, you can answer your own question.
@aking1012 deleted?
It's a severe corner case...and yes, deleted
05:43
Is it possible to login by voice recognition? http://askubuntu.com/questions/117505/is-it-possible-to-login-by-voice-recognition?atw=1 #login
05:55
I really like that question, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist
it doesn't. you are right
shame I can only upvote it once
i doubt i would use it anyway
I wouldn't use it, but it might give ubuntu a nudge over RHEL in the govt sector
I'm just saying...It's useful for more than just if I personally would use it.
i understand that and that's why i edited and upvoted it.
but, wonder if we already have one.
do we have one for face?
06:11
There's one for android...if we don't I doubt it would be hard to adapt
Voice with random challenges is infinitely more secure than facial recognition
we can perhaps do both :D
It would be epic, but it would be for another release since it would require adding hooks to a)all screensavers/resumes and b)all login managers
To be truly proper it would also need to be for keychain prompts as well
some third party developer interested might be able to implement this feature
ask ubuntu refuses to load for me.. Ahh
IF someone did, and I'm just saying if, it would be horribly useful for a tiny subset of users
true that
06:16
but I go back to "give ubuntu a nudge over RHEL in the govt sector"
the new model is $1 apps for everyone. forget the $50+ apps for pseudo-normal and $2000 apps for specialized. $1 apps is where the money is(sadly software center minimum sits at about $5)
we all are passionate about Ubuntu.
yes we are
Night all.
but why do we want to overthrow RHEL? we all appreciate open source projects.
night George
06:21
@GeorgeEdison Good night!
I don't want to overthrow them. I'm saying there is room for more commercial market. And an influx of paid support users would surely provide funding for more developers/projects. It could only help
So I'm thinking about writing a driver for a pseudo network interface so VBox et al work in bridged mode without the network cable plugged in. All it has to do is respond to arps for gateway
wow, gd luck with that
It would NEVER make it in to mainline since it's a hack solution, but it would be REALLY useful
Like it just has to fool the kernel into thinking there's an outside world. Once that happens everything else isn't my problem.
It's the most logical solution yes?
06:35
probably,
do you know how to add more than one column of workspaces in gnome-shell?
I don't use gnome-shell. I could probably earn more points if I switched to a more "normal" window manager/desktop
points?
what do you use then?
highly customized xfce
and xinerama with no 3d support
06:38
I thought so too.
Ahh, my sound is not working. Let me reboot.
Hello all
@aking1012 Me too
I like the easy right click menu and 3 screens actually working
There's no reason I should have an incredibly powerful video card only pushing one screen just so I can have unity
What do you have
I'm on a Zotac 6200
ATI dual GPU whatever pushing 1440 SPUs
I want the MSI dual that pushes 3000+ SPU but I can't afford it atm
@aking1012 is it overkill that i have three single monitor rigs hooked up with synergy?
aside from chrome crashing when i copy/paste its been fairly nice to me.
06:50
@lazyPower - possibly overkill
I just went with a MASSIVE video card instead of another desktop.
haha. I had spare parts, so i put it to use
cost-wise it was cheaper than a couple of used desktops
Between Running the Terraria server and and a CI builder - its been nice enough to have. When i leave my job and give back the laptop i'll be sad to see this 23" LED go to waste, so i'll probably upgrade then.
Any suggestion on what block cipher mode i should use with whirlpool?
Never used whirlpool. If it's anything like AES as far as modes go CBC is kind of the standard
I may have just pulled that out of my bum though so don't use it as a final decision making point
If I ever do another build, I'll turn this into a headless opencl trial box
I'm enjoying watching my legacy work projects die a horrid death with xbuild
EntityFramework, oh what a hog you are. Thank god i got smart and swapped out with subsonic and activerecord
06:57
@lazyPower - it was a question a while ago...have you ever seen anyone get usb-vga adapters working? My laptop pushes enough for most stuff, and I'ld really rather use my desktop as a GPU computing rig.
How do I do root cronjobs
you know, i've heard tale of it happening... but i myself know nothing about it since i dont use display link devices.
never traversed that path, wish I had more info on it.
@aking1012 @GeorgeEdison of course
@lazyPower I've heard reports of it working but I've never done it myself...and everyone I tried to help through it got to the green screen 'almost there' before they gave up
@AmithKK You don't "do" cron jobs. They just happen. Are you asking how you schedule a cron job to run as root?
07:00
sudo crontab -e
Trying to answer this:

Q: Python script won't write data when ran from cron

RuudWhen I run a python script in a terminal it runs as expected; downloads file and saves it in the desired spot. sudo python script.py I've added the python script to the root crontab, but then it runs as it is supposed to except it does not write the file. $ sudo crontab -l > * * * * * ...

aight i'm out
see ya
later on
@AmithKK - I'm guessing it's environment variables borking python not privileges
07:09
I'm down with the cleanup thing, but I'm not on board with registering and competing. I try to keep askubuntu clean all the time. If the want to send me a coffeemug they can
@aking1012 Cleanup is just a good UI
:D
@aking you can start with this
i don't feel like cleaning up just for the bugs. so, i go and review these answers and upvote them when necessary.
@jokerdino Most of them ought to be fixed
You should use API data
@AmithKK that is pretty new data.
07:24
@jokerdino I bookmarked it...I'll come back to it when I'm feeling froggy.
froggy, jeez

Q: Has there been any suggestion to encourage AU members to become Ubuntu Members?

bodhi.zazenI noticed there are a number of dedicated and helpful members on askubuntu. Has there been any suggestion to encourage such members to become Ubuntu Members as a recognition of their contributions here (similar to forums) ? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Membership https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Forums/Membe...

I could write that only because I am already a member. :P
Mix match of random blabbering that I hope makes some sense overall.
08:10
It makes sense to me...although I'm not exactly sure what "Ubuntu member" entails
Nothing much actually. Just a way to show appreciation for your contribution to Ubuntu.
Yeah, I get it mostly.
seems to me, if more people just did things everything would get a lot better. no need for groups or affiliations. if someone from ubuntu official or canonical said "you should click apply" i probably would, but it's more about just doing the right thing and less about filling a wicket for me
i don't get you. not a bit.
you don't understand what I said, or you just think I'm odd?
both. :P
08:19
well I'm not against being a part of the ubuntu family of affiliations. I'm just saying that I don't think it's necessary. If they said something like we want you to be a part of our group, I agree with their philosophy generally, so it would be bad form not to accept. Does that make more sense?
I see.
It is not compulsory or anything. It is completely optional.
And it is voluntary.
Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at. I'm not against it, I just don't see a need for it. I frequently tell people that do offshoot distros that they should just make proper packages and have a repo instead.
If you don't want, no one ever is going to force you to become one.
But, on the other hand, I am passionate about Ubuntu. If someone asks what I have done to Ubuntu, I can show them that I have done so and so. If they ask what do I get from contributing, I can show the goodies of membership...
I can't put it bluntly, I am just bad.
Oh I know this. Like I said, I'm not against it at all. In fact I'm for as many affiliations as possible(see my list of certifications on my profile page...as I consider listing them endorsement of the accrediting bodies that grant them...yes there are some I left off because I think they were, less than stellar)
Alright, so we were never disagreeing.
08:26
exactly so...i was just being very neutral
you have a choice to be.. so yeah
anyway, if your meta post/rant thing was directed at me at all, thanks for the vote of confidence
which one?
the membership post / rant wasn't at you.
okay...just checking
08:54
Poof. Finished writing 4 answers on meta... That took quite a bit of time.
Nice. I weighed in on a couple things and accepted an answer in meta in the last couple of minutes too
nice stuff.
Can you answer this? Can't upgrade packages, it gets stuck on openjdk-6-jre-headless http://askubuntu.com/questions/48656/cant-upgrade-packages-it-gets-stuck-on-openjdk-6-jre-headless?atw=1 #server
'Let me look into it. I think it was solved. – Jean-Nicolas Boulay Desjardins Mar 22 at 7:16' <-- and it gets tweeted...wasn't this talked about several hours ago?

Q: How to disable LightDM start sound (drums) in Ubuntu 12.04?

user15533Can't find an option to disable the drum sound that sounds after login to gnome in Ubuntu 12.04. How can I disable it without deleting the sound file.

added my vote. i even edited one of the answers in the dupe to include what worked for me
@ManishSinha - the top answer doesn't do away with the sound he's talking about. Answer number two does. I've experienced this myself
I thought they were different.
I can hear a little drum sound just when the lightdm starts.
Yeah, there's a login sound AND a system ready sound. I haven't found a 'good' way to disable the system ready drums other than renaming the file
so, it is not really a dupe then
Well, it's covered in the other answer
10:25
I wouldn't close it as dupe, because they are not the same question.
just copy over the actual answer and mark this as answered would do fine.
Ok, I'll add an answer that was what worked for me
@aking1012 wait hold on
just let me know...i can always delete the answer
this is actually a dupe, misleading title did me in
yeah, i already voted to close. delete the answer or just leave it?
10:31
votes to close
good day
i feel obligated to say middle at this point
@aking1012 your call
10:32
I'll just leave it. It's a valid answer, and if it gets down-voted on close I'll eat the 2 points.
actually i would say delete it..
new stack exchange build will auto redirect dupes to original if there is no answer.
okies, np
done
if you have a valid answer, then add it to the original question, that will keep the users sane
I already edited one to include what worked for me
good job
10:34
it's not the TOP answer, but it's the most similar answer
Hello does anyone know if both of these commands are the same? 'sudo apt-get install -f' and 'sudo apt-get -f install'
the second one should do the job..
^
they might both run and mean the same thing, but the latter is more correct
I see two tutorials with the same question, but showing the aforementioned commands

Q: How to install Chrome browser properly via command line?

user33877Setting up and managing an Ubuntu server all by myself, in coming months, is a part of my current plans. Hence, I am planning a swtich from Windows to Linux - - Ubuntu. I now need to get some grip on the command line, since I am all used to Windows' GUI. Anyway... the most obvious start is insta...

That's kinda confusing me.
sudo <== as root
apt-get <== package manager
-f <== force
install <== install
the order may not be significant. either one should work
10:44
oh, okay! Thanks @aking1012
np. i'm kind of shooting from the hip since i usually use the latter syntax, but i've never known jorge and jrg to be outright wrong. if they say it works, in all probability it does
hmm... yeah
apt-get [-sqdyfmubV] [-o= config_string ] [-c= config_file ]
[-t= target_release] [-a= default_architecture] {update |
upgrade | dselect-upgrade | dist-upgrade |
install pkg [ { =pkg_version_number | /target_release } ] ...
| remove pkg... | purge pkg... |
source pkg [ { =pkg_version_number | /target_release } ] ... |
build-dep pkg... | check | clean | autoclean | autoremove |
{-v | --version} | {-h | --help}}

is what the man page says...you should be safe either way though
I'm just not comfortable editing on top of jorge
@JorgeCastro - you around?
Jorge Castro - seen 13s ago ... so yeah, looks like he's around
