Well I think the key is politeness + a link to show that what you're saying is not just, like, your opinion, man. :)
what Eliah said :)
01:02
@TheWanderer Maybe each Apple Watch contains a fragment of top-secret analog microfilm that, if all pieced together, reveal Apple's deepest, darkest forthcoming product ideas.
01:40
You know, the Apple Watch is actually a nice product.
Only smart watch I'd buy outside the pebble 2, which is now dead anyway..
I think my next watch would be an android wear.
(current one is a chinese android fork called ticwear - which only runs on older model ticwatches)
@Seth Not $1300 nice
true
yet again, they're marking up prices even more in Canada
$1299-->$1605, but Apple's selling for $1699
poor Canada

Q: Setting a default umask permanently

Beshal JaenalIf we create a shared directory, and allow say a root user and a group sharedgroup to the permissions: -rwxrwxr--, and we want every new file to have the permissions -rwxrwxr--, but the permission of the parent directory to be rwxrwxr-w. The way to do this would(what I know) be to set the defaul...

02:31
@TheWanderer that's hardly a lot of markup. Although it is interesting.
does anyone here have smarthome experience?
@TheWanderer Meh, who needs one of those anyway.
@Seth pebble time is still awesome
02:50
@KazWolfe I kinda want to get a pebble 2, but I'm worried about it losing most of it's features as they shut things down.
we're fixing that :)
the vast majority of features are offline, actually
That and I don't have a constant data connection on my phone so I'm not sure how useful it'd be.
you'll lose dictation for now, but we're looking for fixes
but yeah. the vast majority of things are offline or don't need a persistent connection
Well, I doubt dictation would work with my SMS app anyway
not like that
thats an android thing
it's done through the pebble companion app instead
02:55
I have a pretty nice regular watch besides.
@KazWolfe I don't understand.
@Seth dictation works by the watch recording voice, sending it to the app, which submits it to nuance servers.
following that, the pebble app uses an Intent to send a reply through the notification API
if you can quick-reply, you can use dictation in theory
Oh. That's nice
Of course it doesn't work anymore, but it's nice.
because gadgetbridge is very Stallman, they want a solution that's completely offline and inhouse
I wish Fitbit would commit to keeping some of these features working, like this.
there may eventually be a link into Google's speech-to-text stuff, though. we're trying to add in support for plugins that will add extra features like internet and google stt
this isn't fitbit. this is a bunch of hackers :)
they agreed to keep it working until end-of-year
02:58
@KazWolfe that's not gonna work well
@Seth i know
@KazWolfe yeah I know
i'm really pissed over their decisions to do that
but oh well.
and that they dont seem to want to publish to play store
because they're trying to use the app as a soap-box to get people to move over and use f-droid
There's really nothing wrong with publishing to the play store.
they want a soapbox
03:00
Using play services is another thing tho
@KazWolfe I know...
i hate stallmans for exactly this reason
Eh, having heard Stallman talk in person, while they can be annoying, they do a lot of good.
same with religion imo
dont force it down on everyone's throat
do whatever you want, dont force the rest.
That's not really parallel to what I was saying, but yeah
just my opinion
03:04
I'd agree with that too
sure, they (fsf) do good
but they can be a bit... annoying
Definitely

Q: Linux command for switching user with password as parameter

Akash SethiI want to write the Linux shell Script that switches the user without asking for password i.e. password can be specified as the parameter. I have my script like this startService.sh sudo su hduser -p mypassword but this is not working can anyone tell how to specify the password in the comma...

wait. how do they know they're the same password?!
@KazWolfe this is a good question
i thought they were supposed to be independently salted+hashed
i mean, i guess your Mac could send your password to Apple servers, which hash with the same salt...
alternatively, your hash+salt for iCloud or something is stored locally.
still seems weird
@KazWolfe that still wouldn't work unless they're storing the unsalted hash
04:37
Hey. That is a good question.
wait. no. grr.
Hmm... I guess all they need is to send the password to iCloud.
But my original question stands - why?
And how can I work around this >:)
@Seth no, it would work
I don't remember seeing this in Sierra so it must be High Sierra specific.
@KazWolfe yeah I was confused for a second
04:40
it is dumb no matter what though
it's one of those "forced-security" things that everyone just resents (like requiring a symbol).
ugh, yeah. One of the government sites I have to use forces you to use a symbol but only allows like 5 of them, none of which are symbols I regularly use.
I mean, I guess it's better than my last cell carrier, who would send me my password in plaintext.
or better than banks
that require five character passwords (case-insensitive, letters only), no q/z
Yeah, one of my banks practically forced me to use dictionary words.
tfw my steam account is safer than my bank
or my google account, which actually has u2f
Yes.
Because 2FA.
I feel really good about my GitHub account. It's protected with a hardware token (U2F device).
04:46
i'm honestly amazed no banks have 2fa
Me too.
like even sms 2fa
Yeah, even that would be better than a dictionary word.
my own bank's 2fa is a secret question
Google Authenticator is a good middle ground between something more secure than SMS and less complex than U2F.
04:47
yaknow... two of the same factor is useless
Yes, lol.
u2f is pretty simple though
the only issue with adoption is the fact that people need to buy or be issued tokens
i mean, if you have one of those nano yubikeys, it's just pressing another button every now and then
I keep a USB extension cable on my desk to make it really easy to plug stuff like that in.
(I keep my Yubikey on a keychain.)
im sorta excited/waiting for the vivokey
i mean... implanted 2fa.
04:55
@NathanOsman well, duh. can't support your competitor.
i'm surprised Apple hasn't bought Yahoo and rebranded it to Apple Search.
Yahoo doesn't have the tech to compete with Google.
and would apple care?
or would they just say "we did it, you'll like it."
It has to be good.
Expectations for Apple are high.
counter: apple music
apple maps
Who uses Apple Maps?
05:02
exactly
well... people who just use the default
Hmm... you may have a point there.
because it's easier
"Turn right. Proceed to dock. Travel 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. Turn left."
Why does Foxit Reader always start with the titlebar above the top edge of the screen.
i wonder if i can change the boot logo on my XPS
probably not

Hey all - here's an oddity, at least to my mind! A question about permissions and LibreOffice has been marked as a duplicate of a question about a corrupted ODT document. I've got the former problem (as it happens). But is this (wrongly marked dupes) worth a Q on Meta? Or can a ♦mod take a look?
FWIW, it looks like the permissions question has "real" duplicate, but it doesn't have a "real" answer, sadly. (In my case, a permanently mounted samba share is no longer working, and the gvfs version isn't good enough for LibO.)
@Dɑvïd Why is that about permissions? The error doesn't suggest it is a permissions issue and the accepted answer simply suggests using a different program so, again, it can't really be permissions.
it doesn't really seem like the two questions are about the same thing though
@terdon Hmm, yes. Bad use of terms on my part. It's definitely a LibO problem with accessing the file, so not "permissions" per se, since (e.g.) AbiWord can read the file just fine.
@TheWanderer And that's more my point.
It turns out that there's quite a few of the "not-permissions-but-something-like-it" issue. They're all LibO problems, though.
12:00
I don't have a clear enough opinion on this to make a call. Sorry. They seem like dupes to me, but I don't really use Office tools so. . .
12:18
@terdon But (strictly for the banter), here's why I might have picked up the "permissions" terminology -- this is the dialog that pops up after the "General input/output error..." dialog:
FWIW.
@Dɑvïd Where's that from?
@terdon From LibO -- I'm on Ubuntu 17.10, as it happens.
(Unless I misunderstand your question: I just took that screen shot seconds ago.)
OK. But then how is it relevant to the two questions on the site? Why do you assume they have the same issue you do?
It seems very strange given that the OP's acceptance of the answer suggests it was just a format that libre office couldn't deal with and not a permissions issue at all.
@terdon Yeah - it was connected through the "General input/output error" message, but in my case it's something around the difference between mounting samba share in fstab (which will not mount, and cannot be reached) and the gvfs access to the same "share" (which works just fine, except for LibO).
Please VTC as off topic because OP runs Kali Linux: askubuntu.com/q/959356/175814

@Sina please don't add version tags to questions unless you know 100% that the issue is version specific. They shouldn't be used just to indicate what version the OP is running. Also, please only use code for actual code, not for emphasis and avoid adding random bold text since that makes the post much harder to read. — terdon ♦ 11 secs ago

Hi, I had downloaded liunx mint 18.2 kde 64-bit. But I had added many mirrors while downloading after world mirror got down so now when I checked checksum, it's fine and make usb bootable It says "error: file 'boot' not find" further it could boot but unable to install it, Installer just bounce and then disappear. Also my prior iso can works fine. So tell me if I need to download iso again. Thanks
14:11
If the md5sum is correct, the problem is elsewhere.
I suggest you post a question on Unix & Linux (not on Ask Ubuntu), give the exact error and explain exactly how you made the bootable usb.
Yes it is correct.
Thanks I used default app i kde to make bootable.
@Swapnil We will need more details than that. Find out the name of the app. But first try using another tool. Whatever Mint recommends. Not all tools can work for this and often they work for one distribution but not another.
@Swapnil try some of these:

A: Dual Boot USB Drive

terdonYes it is. Essentially, you need to copy as many installation CDs (ISOs) as you want on to the pendrive and then use a bootloader (such as GRUB) to boot from the one you want. Here are a few of the many programs that can help you set it up: Live USB creator Live USB multiboot unetbootin YUMI ...

But I other iso working while made with same tool. Default kde app is USB Image Writter.
@Swapnil Same ISO? Same distribution?
Other prior version of same distro but 32-bit.
14:22
@Swapnil Well, as I said. Try one of the other tools. Not all tools work well for making bootable installation USBs. That ti worked with a different ISO doesn't mean it should work with this one, I'm afraid.
OK but I'll try. I also checked in virtual box it works but getting black screen.
@terdon Thanks for help and your invaluable time.
You're welcome.

@StefanoPalazzo: I don't really want to go to all that trouble just for one email I shouldn't have been sent in the first place, either someone gave them my email address or it's just spam spoofing or something. Either way, it's not got anything to do with me, so I'll just discard it.
