12:25 AM
@KazWolfe wait a minute....

12:39 AM

oh so you didn't update the StackBot site
OK

Huh?

@Seth need radio advice if you have a sec. Do you know of an adapter from Motorola M1 female to standard phone TRRS?

12:55 AM
0_0

1:11 AM
@ParanoidPanda You've made one of the biggest understatements this century...
@KazWolfe you mean a two-pin adapter for motorola radios?
yeah the likelihood there's an adapter that works with that and goes to standard TRRS is, what, zero?
you might need to combine more than one type of adapter to make it work

or build one

mhm
what're you trying to use with a standard phone input though
because I'm not sure whatever you're using will be compatible completely heh
points at the small stack of radios he has that he's programming for a client, some of which are Motorola radios
TRRS is also going to be complicated to make work...

... there's conflicting wiring standards for it, so without knowing WHICH TRRS wiring adapter you need...

magnumelectronics.com/Klein-Motorola-2-Pin-Adapter-p/… so something like this? (random google search)

1:16 AM
... you're likely to get screwed over

@ThomasWard hence me saying "or build one"
there's ... 3?

@JourneymanGeek that gets you to standard 3.5mm I think.
from 3.5mm to actually what they need, that's its own beast of chaos

your favorite

@JourneymanGeek I'm more curious why they're trying to adapt something created for non cellular devices to work with cellular devices

yes

1:17 AM
@TheWanderer cause they're common and cheap

wat

@TheWanderer that thing looks like TRS with mono out and speaker.... which is odd.

@JourneymanGeek so, what? just because they can get things for Motorola M1 radio connectors cheaply because there's so many different things out there that work with that, doesn't mean they're actually capable of being compatible with other standards.

@JourneymanGeek stahp

@JourneymanGeek TBH I think you meant to highlight me. Can we kickmute TheWanderer? :P
2

1:19 AM
@TheWanderer I was meaning the headphones ;p
ooops

stahppppppp

my bad
@TheWanderer SORRY

christ lol
o_O

now i'm curious who starred that

not i

jrg
1:20 AM
Not me.

@ThomasWard basically (android flavoured) TRRS is super common
iphone flavoured TRRS is going legacy.

@JourneymanGeek right, but I meant the opposite direction
M1 -> TRRS is... questionable

you're questionable

jrg
that's questionable

@TheWanderer hue

1:21 AM
Everything is questionable, including thy conduct @TheWanderer

@ThomasWard trrs also works with TRS, and can be split so something like that gives you a ton of flexibility too
I'd actually go for dual TRS myself

@jrg or is it?
@JourneymanGeek STAHP

@JourneymanGeek red alert FYI: I'm the one with laser eyes, not @TheWanderer

jrg
@TheWanderer Well, we're talking about it so that means it's questionable.

lrn2type Tho<tab>

1:21 AM
@jrg or does it?

@ThomasWard ugh. I AM TOO USED TOO THREE LETTER AUTOCOMPLETE FOR EVERYONEEEEEEEE

lol

@JourneymanGeek oh indeed, I know a lot about TRRS / TRS. But i'm more concerned about trying to go from M1 -> [unspecififed] TRRS.

jrg
@TheWanderer That's the logical end point.

because they're nowhere near the same thing

1:22 AM
ah!
@ThomasWard but its analog audio

@ThomasWard I did. hue

and that looks a LOT like an airplane connector, only not.

@JourneymanGeek if all they want is the speaker audio parts, then yeah that will work
but that only works for one of the connectors

ohhh
it does more ?

@JourneymanGeek it's similarish to how the Kenwood connectors work
one carries audio
one carries mic and a PTT signal if it's a PTT device

1:24 AM
ah

and I know a ton about how the Kenwoods work because my personal Baofengs and Tyterra radios all use the Kenwood connector
some case in point about such things
grabs images

>_>

oh forgot about the PTT bit

Tldr is I'm crazy

1:29 AM
whoa I remember that @ThomasWard

@KazWolfe no news there

first is the connector, second is the side view of one of my baofengs, third is how it connects. So you can see there's more than just the standard audio and mic

If there's not one, that works too.

@JourneymanGeek hence why I think we need to know more bout the use case
what device has the M1, and what they're connecting into

1:32 AM
Phone into some old M1 speaker/mic unit

what kind of phone, what is the specific speaker/mic unit
because M1 isn't "old" it still exists on some motorolas

jrg
Did this turn into The Radio Shack while I wasn't looking?

GS8, no idea.

@jrg ALWAYS

jrg
k
just making sure @ThomasWard

1:32 AM
@jrg offtopic chatter about radios :P

jrg
Hey it's all good
someday I'll make it a priority to get my technician license

I don't have my technician license yet.

Oh yes. I still need to start doing that one day.

I have my GMRS license, and a pending application for commercial band UHF and VHF frequencies

Way too lazy to care, and scanners aren't illegal so... /shrug

1:34 AM
@KazWolfe nope, they aren't.

jrg
sounds like we should make a study group...

Nor is owning transceivers.
broadcasting on a frequency though needs a license
GMRS covers me for the GMRS frequencies

jrg
I've thought about getting a GMRS station license
anyway... i'm derailing your off-topic conversation. carry on. :)

I have the GMRS license because I use it with my family and with some neighbors. But meh.
@jrg no no it's all good :)

So... Is a ham license worth it if I have no plans to transmit other than "authorized" pentesting?

1:35 AM
@KazWolfe got a picture of the device?
@KazWolfe "authorized" pentesting?
there is no such "authorized" part under FCC rules
and what do you mean by 'pentesting'

Totally not trying to set off car panic alarms

jrg
OK, I'm getting it as a goal to get my license before the rules change next July.
ARRL have decent materials?

i'm looking at local classes from a local HAM club to get my licenses.
and they'd do the exam too

jrg
Not sure I'll be able to commit to a local HAM club, I'm about to start a 6 month period where I won't be in town more than a few days at a stretch.

classes cost cash, license exam costs zero lol
@jrg oh I'm not committing to the club... they offer to-the-public classes and are volunteer examiners authorized to give the exam by the FCC

jrg
1:38 AM
@ThomasWard Didn't mean the club, meant in person classes.

ah
well they're weekend courses so meh

jrg
Oh, like do it in a weekend?

@jrg well a couple weekends but yes

@ThomasWard tldr connecting this or similar to GS8
Why? I have one and I want to put it to use for something if I can.
So what is the point of a ham license if you don't ever want to talk to anyone?

jrg
Makes mistakes with your transmitter a lot less illegal

1:43 AM
^ that

jrg
transceiver, technically.

@jrg though accidentally keying up on a frequency you don't have a license to for less than a second without being disruptive as a result of falling on your ass due to ice and accidentally hitting the PTT key...
... that's forgiven :p

jrg
@ThomasWard True but it's still annoying to deal with if something does happen...

True
My radios are all set to receive-only for a large number of frequencies I keep an eye on
GMRS is receive/transmit
Penn State Harrisburg ITS operations channel is receive/transmit because I work for the University so I'm covered by their license with my boss's permission

Yay for not having TX equipment that can hit anything other than ISM.

jrg
1:47 AM
@ThomasWard IT support has their own channel?
hamstudy.org seems to be pretty cool
looks like it's designed to get you to pass a test more than anything else

guys get the Google Crowdsource app
it's fun

Yes. Give Google more data.
Work as a mechanical Turk for free!

jrg
Indeed

@jrg Information Technology Services department
help desk is only one small part of that

it's
fun
and I use those Google services, so I want them to work

1:51 AM
I can also get paid to train AIs.
Why should I do it for free

they're probably going to start handing out Play credits for it

jrg
@ThomasWard Gotcha. That's really cool.

If they do that, I'll use it.
That will make it worth my time.

Nothing locks up the UI like doing a disk => disk copy operation with a really large file.
In this case mechanical drive => SSD.
So that's a bit strange.

@jrg yeah, it's how we have across-campus live communication with individuals. And helpdesk to helpdesk comms which are business related. The channel is pretty clear most of the time though.

jrg
1:59 AM
neato

yep. And I live right next to campus and keep a radio on me all the time, even when not working, because the other channel of the dual-tuning setup (the A/B button on the baofengs and my tyterras) is the weather radio frequency. So I am reachable even if i'm not on shift.
if its business related xD

2:17 AM
Anyone have a copy of Visual Studio 97? :P
Don't ask. Don't ask. Don't ask.

why do you need a copy of visual studio 97?

2:33 AM
I need a debugger that runs on Windows 98 SE.
I can't get any version of ProcessMonitor to work.
They all require Win2000+.

Hmm... interesting.

jrg
3:13 AM
@NathanOsman MSDN doesn't have it?

msdn doesn't have most 90s stuff

3:49 AM
as much as it pains me to say this - this probably means the abandonware route

4:34 AM
@Avery I believe MSDN has everything as far back as Windows 1.0
@jrg I don't have MSDN :P

4:45 AM
Edge is freezing up my VM.
Also, IE isn't so great at estimating download speed:

@NathanOsman what's new

116 MB/sec - er... nope.

@NathanOsman gimme ur internet pls kthx

It's a bug.
I'm actually pulling at 400 KB/s.

5:12 AM
@KazWolfe not off the top of my head or a quick Google search.
Like Thomas said you may need to use multiple adapters.
don't happen to have a pinout for the M1 do you?
@KazWolfe e.g. something like this and then into TRRS, perhaps.
ugh, no that won't work.

I suggested an edit on RPi SE moving an unformatted syslog output to a pastebin, but the first reviewer rejected it
Which is dumb because
If you put it in a code block it exceeds the max post length
Fine, leave the post unreadable then!
O_o
it just got approved by a mod 5 seconds ago

Oli
@AndroidDev you can put three ```s at top and tail of unindented code to avoid the length issue.

@Oli wait I didn't know that

Oli
Well... To avoid adding 4 chars to every line, anyway.

@Oli orly? Why doesn't the code format button do that?

@AndroidDev Because it favours the 4-space indent. Why? No idea. I'm not it's mother.

@ThomasWard It looks fine to me. As far as I can tell that's the only thing the question could mean, and your edit to the question did not harm it in any way.

Only a couple more sites to go before Chrome's HTTPS deadline.

wait... what is this for?
i mean, there's an app and a mobile ui already, no?
this makes me irrationally angry

Wait, wat?
StackMobile existed long before the mobile UI.
Also, it offers access to sites in closed beta, unlike the mobile site.

ah.
