Q: How to delete KDE activity

홍세정I don't know why, but I made an activity. Anyway, how can I delete it?

Oy, it has 2 vtc as unclear...

@chaskes Seems a perfectly clear question to me

@Seth Exactly. A big frustration is that people vtc as unclear just because it's about something they haven't heard of. I suspect at least some of these folks also chide OPs for not using google first.

@chaskes indeed you are probably correct

:)
@Seth I installed Firefox 55 on opensuse. It is so much faster. The hype is not hype.

4:03 AM
@chaskes I know right! Firefox is so much better now.
If you think 55 is fast, try 57 (the last daily build)
I'm super excited. The only thing keeping me on Chrom(e)(ium) is U2F support now. Assuming FF can keep the speed up.

I've always been a little afraid of the daily builds, but I just saw a mozilla blog post asking people to use it and report bugs, so I've been thinking about it.
I use both Chrome and firefox daily for different things
I had to install pulseaudio in sus 42.3

@chaskes Firefox packages them in self contained folders so it's easy and you can always switch to stable if you need to

@Seth Yeah, I didn't realize that until tonight when I unpacked a 55 binary into home.

4:21 AM
Oops lol

No, that's how I got 55 to run outside of the pkg mgr

I hate unpacking things into the wrong folder. Always makes such a mess.
@chaskes oh. I may have misunderstood your message

Oh, yeah, not like that that. lol

I'm working on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
I have 6x GPU Zotac Nvdia GTX 1060 with 3GB of RAM
After long struggle I've installed CUDA drivers
In order to do that I've uninstalled nouveau drivers...
Process has been too complicated - it shouldn't be that complicated :)
How do I tell if CUDA drivers have been installed properly and I can use GPU efficiently?
I'm determined and fairly technical. So far "invested" (wasted) two days of effort. I was wondering if Linux is still around? I did a quick Google search for operating system usage and it seems like Windows + MacOS + mobile operating systems...

8:47 AM
@Seth Werid. Looks like a keyboard going bad. (I assume you've already tried blowing it out?)
@MichalStefanow Dual Boot or VM? (First one should work)

9:00 AM
Just Ubuntu
Have installed CUDA drivers, now getting geth and ethminer to work

/ on my system is mounted on /dev/sda5
But fdisk -l is saying that /dev/sda5 is a FAT16 partition instead of an ext4 one
And gparted says it's ext4, but mounted at /,/var/lib/docker/aufs
This makes no sense :/

@LegionMammal978 That does seem strange. Can you give the full output of fdisk -l and also parted -l ?

lm978@basement:~$ sudo fdisk -l

Thanks. (No worries about the length.)

@LegionMammal978 I think this is the same situation as in this question (except that the MBR "partition type" byte is set to one that represent FAT16 rather than HPFS/NTFS as in that question):

Q: fdisk -l shows ext3 file system as HPFS/NTFS

RameshI have an external HDD which I formatted as NTFS partition in Windows. Now, I formatted this HDD in my linux system using the below command. mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb1 It was formatted successfully. However, when I run the fdisk -l command, it gives me the system as NTFS/HPFS. Device Boot St...

@EliahKagan Hmm, not sure if that would mess up anything Docker is doing

Yeah I don't know if this needs fixing.
One of the reasons I'm not 100% sure is that I don't really understand why, in that question, the "Id" still says "83" (which is the id for "Linux") even though the the "System" column reads HPFS/NTFS. In contrast, when you run fdisk -l, the "Id" column shows "6" (which is the id for FAT16).

But yeah, you see, I was trying to figure this out in preparation to ask a question about how to remove sda7 and extend sda5 upwards so I have more disk space on /
Apparently, trying to move the root partition can cause Issues™

I don't know if there are any Docker-specific problems associated with moving the root partition. Aside from that, if you move the root partition (particularly if you don't have a separate boot partition) then you will very likely have to reinstall GRUB. Other than that, I haven't had problems doing it.
How are your partitions identified in /etc/fstab? If they're identified by UUID or label (and the labels are unique), then I wouldn't expect you'd have to do anything special except reinstall GRUB. (I emphasize that I'm not necessarily familiar with all the relevant details and this is a guess rather than a guarantee.)

Q: Manpages broken on Ubuntu 16.04

Dj DacI have the same problem as in this question but with Ubuntu. Reinstall man pages & fix man I tried everything but the problem persists. When I try and view a manpage I get an empty page. What can I do about it? When I try to view my own manpage I get this error: $ man -l openshell2017/opsh/m...

Hi folks
I am following those steps to add a directory to my PATH:
simply edit ~/.profile

gedit ~/.profile

find the following line:

PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"

and change it to:

PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH:/usr/hitech/picc/9.82/bin"
but my .profile file contains:
# set PATH so it includes user's private bin directories
PATH="$HOME/bin:$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"

. /home/yalishanda/torch/install/bin/torch-activate

. /home/yalishanda/torch/install/bin/torch-activate

. /home/yalishanda/torch/install/bin/torch-activate

. /home/yalishanda/torch/install/bin/torch-activate

. /home/yalishanda/torch/install/bin/torch-activate
should I add a new line like the one for torch-activate or should I litteraly change PATH="$HOME/bin:$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH" ?

Q: Ubuntu recognizes only half of my memory , how do I solve this?

smolenskI use an old laptop , it had 1GB of memory when it was first bought. Then 1GB of the completely same model of memory was installed onto the motherboard. Last night I was using windows 7 , and it recognized my 2gb of memory for years. I moved to Linux a little ago , and Ubuntu recognizes only...

@ByteCommander: Have you come across these guys by the way? :)

@ParanoidPanda Yeah, they make nice music

user136984
@ByteCommander: Someone recently recommended to me. Could you recommend me any of their other songs that you think are best? :)

user136984
Just because I'm new to them.

if sudo apt update actually updates a local list of available packages I can install
I suppose it must be possible to have a look at my local list

Just 1163 more repz to go to before 10k :)

How can I do that? Where is it located?

@LandonZeKepitelOfGreytBritn /var/lib/apt/lists/

@ParanoidPanda If you want a sad ballad, try "Euch zum Geleit".
It was actually inspired by the suicide letter of a relative or good friend of one of the band members.

@AndroidDev thanks :)

7:16 PM
@ByteCommander: That's very interesting, I do like the sound of it. It's good to have some added meaning from you though.

user136984
It at least makes a change from Jedi Mind Tricks!

I also like "Dein Anblick", which is also rather slow and calm, but a love song.

on a sidenote sometimes I see don't know whether an installation is still running or whether it just froze. Using the cmd top outputs a load of processes, how can I find out whether smth is wrong or whether it is still busy installing?
In my case I did: sudo apt install openjdk-8-jdk
and it s been 15 minutes...
I know often the --verbose argument can be used for that type of stuff, but not here

@LandonZeKepitelOfGreytBritn what is the last output line?

@ByteCommander update-alternatives: using /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/bin/jmap to provide /usr/bin/jmap (jmap) in auto mode
I install quite a lot of software, build a lot from source. So it would be nice to sometimes have a trick to double check whether everything is still ok during the installation on my pc with limited ressources.

Weird. If it is really stuck at that line for 15 minutes, I'd guess it crashed...

Not sure if that is a good idea, but probably you have to cancel it. I'd uninstall and reinstall it again afterwards though
@ParanoidPanda You might also like one of their drinking songs. I especially like the guest parts by Fiddler's Green and Russkaja in that song.

user136984
7:27 PM
@ByteCommander: Yes! That is fun! :D

@LandonZeKepitelOfGreytBritn limited resources? does that mean you get OOMEs a lot?

Fiddler's Green are also a great German band btw, although IMHO they sound more British than some natives. youtube.com/watch?v=xGrilkdA-7Q

@AndroidDev no it s just that I have a really very old pc with not so much RAM

@LandonZeKepitelOfGreytBritn OOME == Out Of Memory Error

7:32 PM
but that's the same as running out of RAM

user136984
7:51 PM
@ByteCommander: Ok, thanks! I'll have a look at that after I've finished a track of something else I'm listening to.

Q: How to install the acr112_pcsc driver?

UBUNTUI am on Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS. I follow on this file https://github.com/episage/SharpNFC/blob/master/README.md When I type ./configure --prefix=/usr I get selected_drivers: acr112_pcsc no how to install that?

@ByteCommander now for example sudo apt-get update just froze
$ sudo apt-get update
Get:1 security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-security InRelease [102 kB]
Hit:2 ppa.launchpad.net/jonathonf/python-3.6/ubuntu xenial InRelease
Hit:3 be.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial InRelease
Get:4 ppa.launchpad.net/kivy-team/kivy/ubuntu xenial InRelease [17,5 kB]
Get:5 be.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates InRelease [102 kB]
Get:6 be.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-backports InRelease [102 kB]
Hit:7 download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu xenial InRelease
that s where it stopped, seemingly freezed and doesn t do anything anymore.

8:46 PM
This is weird. Can you check your memory usage in another terminal using free -m ?

@ByteCommander and it just happened again...
I did ctrl+c to interrupt it, afterwards I executed apt get update again. The update went fine
now that I try to install a pkg I get the same situation:
1$ sudo apt-get install python-kivy
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-4.10.0-28 linux-headers-4.10.0-28-generic linux-headers-4.8.0-36 linux-headers-4.8.0-36-generic linux-image-4.10.0-28-generic linux-image-4.8.0-36-generic
  linux-image-extra-4.10.0-28-generic linux-image-extra-4.8.0-36-generic
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following additional packages will be installed:
@ByteCommander :
/$ free -m
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 5860 2491 180 513 3187 2502
Swap: 6036 7 6029

nope, that can't be it
Is any process consuming notable CPU resources? You can check that using top
