@Incognito I have a blog. No one reads it.
I am a boring person.
@William Talk about something interesting.
@aking1012 Your'e welcome. :) Professional meme person, in teh house!
What's the URL??
I try to. Ubuntu is boring. So is minecraft, python and PHP.
People like those things.
My blog gets tons of hits, maybe you're not posting in the right spot.
20:06
I took it down, since it had no users. I started a blog for my class to use, thats at classlibrary.org
Been having comment spam problems :(
Have you used akismet?
Aiksmet?
No.
Never heard of it.
Third party spam filter api.
They do bayes scanning on all sorts of spam for comments.
Free.
OK.
I use sPHPblog.
Is that supported?
You send a call over the web, I don't know what sPHPblog is.
Sorry I forgot I'm not in a dedicated programmer's room.
If you're familiar with how the source code works you can put it into it, but I don't know which various CMS' have support out of the box.

akismet is cool.
@William Maybe Drupal would be something to consider.

Ok, sPHPBlog is something I could possibly get behind. No database! Whoo!
(me and my TXT blog post files... :p)
LOL... if you have write privs, you could just use SQLite :P

Uh oh, they're releasing enhanced editions of Baldurs Gate, BG2SoA+ToB. Pair that with Diablo III and that's some pretty hefty mod-absenteeism this year >_<
I'll still be here, Ask Ubuntu IS MY PLAYGROUND :P

You haven't lived until you've picked the "right" ending to ToB (I won't say any more on that because a) it's super awesome and b) shouldn't be spoilt)

Oli
Oli
20:48
@aking1012 Yeah... As long as they're still logged in as the same user - which is often not the case if they're using an "unregistered" account and come back some days later. If they come back and their cookie has died a death, they usually just post an answer and we merge accounts and convert their answer to an edit.
narrows eyes looking @htorque
stop looking, get faster. :P

Quirky Quail.
20:55
@Takkat you and your pigs! :D
Quirky Quokka, that sounds interesting.
I really think it should be "quail" - it just seems to fit the Ubuntu theme :)
sounds like a shakira song
Ubuntu takes the DC approach to it's naming conventions.

@aking1012 I'm not sure I'd want an Ubuntu release to be that... bitey
Yeah...true enough. It was one of the most powerful creatures in the AD&D universe though

@Oli - awesome
Vicious Viper
anyways, natty was announced march 7th, so i should get a new avatar soon :D

I guess that one would send the wrong message. :P
vicious vampire - isn't that a hot sauce? :D
you would alienate team wolf
sorry team jacob...i had to google for the proper vernacular as i haven't done that whole twilight thing. the meme is unavoidable though
Chinese Giant Salamander, a.k.a jabba the hutt
21:05
^^
Nah, Jabba is cool.
yeah, but what J adjective would go properly with Jabba? Only thing that comes to ming for me is Juicy and that sure sends the wrong message
New python mini-app. Peels adjectives from an online dictionary and animal names, also online. Random ubuntu distro name generator...surprise is the secret to humor right?
Jolly Jabba
much better. i just got stuck in brainlock
anyone use ubuntu for policy routing regularly? i can do it on cisco devices super-easy, but i don't have much practice using ubuntu for the same...this question looks PERFECT for a policy routing tutorial.

Q: how to force download on one network and upload on another

RASGlets say that i have an apache server running, and two network cards. each card is connected to a different network. C1 is connected to N1, which is an ADSL connection with the port 80 open (so i can reach my server from oustide my lan). C2 is connected to N2, which is a [very fast] corporate ...

A: What will happen when the Code Names of the Ubuntu releases get to Z

Roland TaylorIt is most likely that Mark will start using Caribbean terminologies as we have such an extensive vocabulary to choose from in our dialects. I expect that he will probably start with Restarting Rastaman after Z, to signify the switch to the new naming scheme. -- On a more serious note, by the t...

Does Restarting Rastaman sound like a reasonable code name?
P.S @Oli I'm loving Aahing Aardvark :D
wooohooo .... yes !
I was number 20 ;P
I got a silver badge! Epic! Literally!

@RolandTaylor Since when is Rastaman an animal? :P

I love that "new kernel" smell you get with a mainline-kernel-ppa -rc release. (As ACPI malfunctions and your CPU is slowly welded to the PC's case)
i love the slow boot you get with a mainline kernel due to the missing apparmor compatibility patch (and missing ureadahead) :P
oh, that reminds me to fix an answer
Oli
Oli
Ah yeah, got to love "ureadahead exit status 5" (or whatever it is).
I threw AppArmor away a long time ago.
i don't really know what it does, and i don't really care as long as it doesn't affect performance. ;)
Oli
Oli
@htorque Yeah that was my view on it but I must have been in a bad mood that day because quite a few system utilities and services got thrown out along with AA
that's the downside of always running ubuntu+1 → i can't do much customization
plus, i got 3200 packages installed when i probably need less than 1000. :D
22:28
I killed comipz in hopes of being able to watch a video file, now when I log into a new "Ubuntu" session unity no longer starts. Did it save my session when I restarted to have no window manager?
jrg
jrg
Choose Ubuntu 2D, and then you should be OK.
All "Ubuntu" Unity is is a big, fat, juicy compiz plugin.
@KyleBrandt probably the unity plugin is disabled in your compiz profile. you can either run unity --reset to reset the compiz profile (wipes all your compiz settings), or try this: when at the blank Ubuntu session, press ctrl+alt+f1, log in, run DISPLAY=:0.0 ccsm, press ctrl+alt+f7, scroll down in the settings manager, and re-enable the unity plugin.
@jrg: I really find the grid plugin helpful though
jrg
jrg
or, what @htorque said, he's pretty awesome at what he does with this.
yeah, bring grid to unity-2d!
22:34
Rebooting fixed the no unity problem :-P
or that
:D
jrg
jrg
That works too. ;D
the microsoft-esque way of fixing problems.
I just wish I could 1) Watch video, 2) VPN had regressed so DNS settings get over written after a while, 3) Compiz didn't get slower and slower over time
jrg
jrg
Trust me when I say this: In 12.04, compiz gets faster.
22:36
2GB Video ram, 24G ram, i7, and SSDs ... I have the hardware
jrg
jrg
Whats your video card? Are you using the open source drivers or the closed sourced?
@jrg: Well compiz starts out fast, then after hours it gets so moving a single terminal screen with nothing else open is choppy as hell
that should make it possible to run ubuntu for a week without the need for swap :D
This is using the latest ATI closed source driver
yeah, i had that too with intel's hd graphics - this seems fixed in 12.04's compiz.
jrg
jrg
22:37
Odd, I can't replicate that here with either of my ATI graphics machines. (11.10 and 12.04, separate boxes with identical hardware for each version)
11.10 compiz wasn't in a good shape

Q: Compiz Eventually Gets Choppy and Slow

Kyle BrandtWhen I do a fresh start of my machine, compiz is fast and smooth. After a few hours, it gets very choppy. For example, moving windows around just make them appear in the new place, same with switching virtual workspaces. I am using gnome classic, compiz --replace doesn't seem to fix the issue. I...

I had this same problem in 11.04
Would I be better off with open source video driver?
jrg
jrg
Not for the 11.10 version of the open source driver.
you would be better off without an ATI graphics card, but... >:D
jrg
jrg
it develops a nasty screen flicker after about 10 minutes of uptime on most machines.
22:39
@htorque: I was big on NVidia for a long time, but twinview made CPU usage crazy high
I have dual 2560xwhatever monitors, so my resolution might push it hard
jrg
jrg
you might want to try this:
6
Q: Using Compiz by default in Unity 2D

OxwiviMy hardware can handle Compiz fine, but not Unity 3D, annoyingly enough. I hate Metacity more than Unity 2D, so I switched compositors using compiz --replace. However that leaves me with two problems: compiz --replace is temporary, it will revert back to Metacity, by the next reboot/login Compi...

Gives you compiz, unity and doesn't use as much resources.
I imagine it is a problem with compiz itself since I had this with gnome classic + compiz in the last release
@KyleBrandt right, that's the one i remember
Looks like maybe I can try this ppa...
it has been duped, the parent is marked as fixed: bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/940139

Looks like maybe I can try this ppa...
famous last words :D
22:51
@KyleBrandt I wish I had that problem. My largest display is 1280x800 :P
Umm.. unity bar is in the middle of the two montiors now...
@KyleBrandt Are you using TwinView?
Oh - the middle.
jrg
jrg
That is weird. Um...
22:57
That is dual monitor
Moving my mouse to the left of the left screen make unity appear on the left of the right screen
Oh, so it is on the left side of the right monitor?
^^ Sorry I know that is a little confusing :-P
@GeorgeEdison: Correct
Ah, but are you using the Nvidia config tool?
jrg
jrg
He has an ATI card.
22:59
Its probably because I have "Monitor 1" on the right
That might be it.
Does the ATI config tool offer an option like "make this display primary" or something?
jrg
jrg
Primary display is always the left one (for 11.10)
Okay, I will just move my monitors I guess :-P
Only one of them has the display port, so have to actually swap them
jrg
jrg
23:02
no, don't. There has to be a solution that isn't physical. :p
Problem solved :-P
The slighty nicer monitor was 1 anyways
Now I guess I wait and see if this ppa fixes my issue
Now I wonder if I can watch full screen video at a decent frame rate ..
hmm, I have beer. and the review queue.
I am in good shape.
Ah, turning off "Hardware Acceleration" in VLC seems to have helped

And a new gravatar @JorgeCastro.

@jrg have you ever heard of murder? twitter uses it.

So glad mom wasn't right next to me when that popped up in notify-osd. :p
yes, i've heard of it.
anyway, someone filed a bug to charm it

oh sweet.
Hello everyone
jrg

oh wait, its a ruby gem?
I do miss vdpau from nvidia though
jrg

thats easy to hack together in a .deb
I shouldn't be awake.

@RolandTaylor around? Is kazam still screwed up on precise or something?
Not at this point of time.
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino go to sleep.
Oh wow, It's Friday already.
It's 7 in the morning. LOL
My sleep cycle is messed up.
23:23
@jokerdino Please don't post sentences containing the string "it's Friday"... bad memories... :P
@KyleBrandt new video card?
(I'm joking of course, but...)
What's wrong with Friday anyway?
@jokerdino, where do you live?
jrg
jrg
Oh geeze, kazam is broken beyond brokeness.
23:24
Nothing at all. Seriously, it's a joke :)
@JorgeCastro: No had it for a while. Was long time nvidia though. ATI seems to be much better with 2 or more monitors though
@JohanSJA Singapore.
I've had the totally opposite experience
@GeorgeEdison I see. Have fun with Thursday there!
Twinview would always cause my CPU to spike with 3 monitors
oh, I didn't even know you could do 3 monitors
What happened to his Gravatar?
:) cause it is Friday here too
Is it just me or Jorge really did change his gravatar?
@JorgeCastro Oh, you're here!
23:25
:D I am in Malaysia
Maybe you can tell us.
@GeorgeEdison on the internet no one can tell your an MSU fan.
@JohanSJA Cool!
VDPau allows for x264 1080p on slow machines though... hard to beat that aspect
I power my xbmc tv box with an atom + nvidia w/ vdpau
it's pretty excellent
@GeorgeEdison hey so should I branch your stuff and start messing with it? (stacktack)
23:28
My xbmc is an old dual core box, been thinking about an atom box ... probably save my power bill as much as it costs
@jrg hey so strangely enough if I run the s3cmd manually instead of from the Rakefile it doesn't upload every file. (Octo)
jrg
jrg
@JorgeCastro Thats weird.
@JorgeCastro Not quite yet.
I'm still finishing off fixing the bugs and reorganizing the code.
It's going to be a lot more HTML5-friendly.
Is there some h.265
