@Seth psshh 96
poor Arizona was 124

@TheWanderer 9% humidity vs 30% (actually probably higher at my house, but I don't have a humidity sensor)
tho 124 is bad.

well humidity is worse in the short run, but dry heat can do some real damage
although, up to a certain point, dry heat is way better than humidity
but then it starts hurting to breathe
I'd personally be fine if the temp stayed around 22C
eek the blob

I know you peep like these so meh

hey, you're the one who looks like a Peep :p

@Avery so I was curious about your old name:
> Arda is a male name used in Turkey; a female Armenian given name; and, separately, a given name of Old English origin.
that's pretty interesting

I'm female, but that name is usually given to males here, that's true.

yeah I know; what interested me was that it's the opposite in Armenia

1:18 AM
yeah.

@TheWanderer Another interesting one is Andrea. In English that's typically a women's name, but in Italy it's the opposite.

@Seth that I know :p

I wonder how lol ;P

because of everyone calling Andrea Lazzarotto "she"
(I was writing that before your sarcastic message btw)

that was rhetorical

1:20 AM
>_>
good song, weird muvid
although weird muvids are hardly new... take Owl City

oh yes. Love that song.

we have an earily similar music taste o_O
wait a second....
is Cecilia a dead mother?
@Avery I also really like that DDG doesn't do that annoying redirect that Google does; so I don't have to follow the link to share it

ugh yessssssss

except for images >.<

yeah I don't understand that part

1:28 AM
well yes, but you can just right click on view file and copy link from there

and yet again, no more stupid redirects that I'm used to with Google
@NathanOsman so I think basically everything in the UI is there for you to use with the backend

It released as the lead single from McMahon's self-titled debut album Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness on August 12, 2014. The song impacted radio on August 19, 2014.[1] It was written for his daughter, Cecilia.

@Seth that's what happens when you're the industry standard

@KazWolfe duckduckgo > google

^
@KazWolfe you get it wrong?

@Seth no, you stop caring
@Avery but that's just your opinion

@KazWolfe Oh. That makes much more sense.
@KazWolfe now you're being just like the pro-Google people someone told me about in The Bridge (hm, I thought it was you.. hah)

@Seth they're a necessary evil

4:24 AM
not really..?

see if you want to see someone actually hates google, look at me

if you have android, they are

I mean other than YouTube :P

if you want to watch videos, they are

@KazWolfe ok but you don't have to have Android

4:25 AM
plus i'm trapped in the google ecosystem
(gmail, android)
and escape is impossible now

escape is never impossible

so i've learned to live with my Google overlords sucking up and profiting off of my data
You try changing god knows how many accounts by hand
and sending everyone who ever contacted you an email saying "hey, this address is dead"

you do it slowly

and do what? host my own email?
that's doab--- wait, my mail server is hosted by Google.

find something better. I use protonmail, but there are other options.
find something that actually has a paid tier.
hosting it yourself works.. but is work intensive.

4:30 AM
oh, so i need to pay for more things. wonderful.

yes.
Privacy is not free.
(although Protonmail has a free tier. They're also very affordable)

there's no guarantee protonmail is actually private

nope. That's why it is called risk management not risk elimination.
although most of their code is open source.

so?
what proof do you have that the code they release is the code they're running?
also, what's the difference if my government is spying on me already?
i live in the us. i have no privacy.
i never had privacy. i never will have privacy.
there's no sense fighting in a battle one's already lost.

that's misguided :(
IMO

4:44 AM
yet it's not inaccurate, either.

I disagree.

oh? how can we have privacy if literally every major website and our own bloody government is watching our every move online?
unless you use Tor and VPNs solely and never visit any of the top 10,000 sites, sure.
even then, you'd have to fully disable JavaScript, which thanks to Bootstrap and literally everything else on web frameworks will break practically every website out there.

Use a VPN. Use privacy badger/ublock. Clear your cookies and local storage. Avoid Google/Facebook as much as possible. You're already most of the way there.
Use a password manager to make logging into sites a bit easier.
@KazWolfe Since when did bootstrap use JS?!

since a long time ago?

either my memory is faulty or it's just been that long since I've touched it.

4:49 AM
avoid google/facebook/amazon/twitter/myspace/stackexchange/reddit

Either way, disabling javascript is rarely necessary.

but i can easily add tracking code in someinnocentfile.js and you'd never know unless you manually inspect the source.

@KazWolfe I haven't found anything wrong with SE or reddit yet.

@Seth they still track everywhere you go.

um.. no?

4:51 AM
> We may log information when you access and use the Services. This may include your IP address, user-agent string, browser type, operating system, referral URLs, device information (e.g., device IDs), pages visited, links clicked, user interactions (e.g., voting data), the requested URL, hardware settings, and search terms. Except for the IP address used to create your account, Reddit will delete any IP addresses collected after 100 days.

@KazWolfe but if you're clearing your cookies/local storage and blocking common trackers you leave them with fingerprinting and storing that on their servers, which is a) less accurate and b) much harder to do.
@KazWolfe that's not tracking

@Seth "pages visited" "links clicked"

@KazWolfe still not tracking?
@KazWolfe literally the easiest things to block ever.

but with google it's not?
doesn't matter.

nope, same deal. No social media buttons load for me on any page. They're all blocked.
1 click

4:54 AM
I know i don't have my privacy anymore. I've given up.

well you certainly don't now ;)

i never had

but like I've pointed out, those are choices.

they won't undo the damage

I have quite a bit of privacy, and I keep taking steps to get more.

4:57 AM
well good for you. you're lucky then.

@KazWolfe well you're a pessimist. It's late. Probably time to go to sleep :)
well I need to sleep now myself.

Can someone help in this problem? I've attached all necessary error files. Stil looking for the correct solution: askubuntu.com/questions/928834/…

@BenedictFlorance Please edit your question and explain exactly what things you tried which didn't work. Also show us the output of sudo parted -l. That screenshot is hard to read and larger than necessary.
Ah, that's what your second screenshot shows. OK, but please remove the screenshot and just post the text @BenedictFlorance. Posting images of text is a bad idea:

You should also explain what the problem is. When do you get this error message? What exactly have you done? Which partition is Ubuntu's root and which one is Windows'?

Another user told to post a screenshot. That's why. Sorry, ;I'm new to this forum

@BenedictFlorance No worries, you had no way of knowing :) And she didn't tell you to post a screenshot, she told you to post the output :P

Oh sorry again. The installer went upto almost 90% and this error popped up -> executing grub-install /dev/sda failed. There was another answer that told me to try Ubuntu and use the desktop shortcut which also didnt work. I've disabled Secure Boot and Fast Startup too.
I've attached launchpad error and log files for the error

Further, pasting the ouptut directly makes it unintended and not properly formatted. Requires lot of time to intend and put it in a new line. Any alternatives?
Have attached a screenshot again for sudo partition -l, @terdon Found pasting, spa :(cing and intending too difficult. Sorry :(
Kindly someone help me, I'm in urgent need of Ubuntu :)

Hello :)

12:49 PM
@BenedictFlorance What I would do is : boot into Windows and disable hibernation -> powercfg /h off ... shutdown PC completely (not reboot) ... then boot ubuntu installation media ... open gparted and format sda8 and delete sda9 ... right-click the swap partition - click swapoff ... then start the installation of ubuntu :)
@BenedictFlorance also : extend sda8 to max size and choose "something else" from the installer ... don't install ubuntu by creating LVM partitions - instead use ext4 as the file system ... for the grub boot loader choose sda - it automatically installs grub to efi partition (sda1) ... good luck ! :)

1:04 PM
@BenedictFlorance Please don't. You can use the formatting tools or, if you have trouble figuring it out, just paste the text and I'll fix it for you.
You still haven't explained any of the things I asked you for though.
Also, make sure you read this:

@cl-netbox How to open gparted and format sd8 and delete sd9? Can you explain how to extend sd8 to max size? "for the grub boot loader choose sda", where should I do this? Kindly explain these in simple terms. :) Thanks in advance
Sure, Terdon. Thanks for the advice. I'll surely learn about formatting tools hereafter and use it properly

@BenedictFlorance Well, that is a bit difficult ... you need to learn some basics I guess, but I made presentations which show how to work with gparted -> docs.google.com/presentation/d/… and how to install ubuntu -> docs.google.com/presentation/d/… ... you can open gparted from the dash in the live desktop session ... hope it helps ! :)

Guys please Question
I got file with this 2 lines
CtsDpiTestCases
CtsDpiTestCases2
If i use `sort file`
it correct
but if the file look like this :
CtsDpiTestCases Passed
CtsDpiTestCases2 Passed
so the command: sort filename
output:
CtsDpiTestCases2 Passed
CtsDpiTestCases Passed
my question is why is not sorted correct?
Thanks

This is probably not the best place to ask this (if you could redirect me to a better chat room that'd be great, but the "Operating Systems" chat room is dead), but does anyone know any low-level details about Ubuntu or other Operating Systems?

@PriyaBansal Hi ! :) What especially do you wanna know ?

I'm wondering what ATAGS are

@Benny Define "correct".
But I see what you mean. I can tell you it's because of the locale and that it will be consistent if you use C instead:
$ LC_ALL=C sort file1
CtsDpiTestCases
CtsDpiTestCases2
$ LC_ALL=C sort file
CtsDpiTestCases Passed
CtsDpiTestCases2 Passed

Hi terdon ! Good afternoon to you ! :)

Hello guys

Ronnie "the scotch guy" entered the room ... Hi @RonnieDroid ! :)

@cl-netbox :-D
How are you doing

3:44 PM
@RonnieDroid I'm fine - thanks :) what about yourself ? :)

@cl-netbox I am fine, but once again I am trying to get ahead of myself :-P. I learned how to set a variable in Python, then how to use the if, elif and else functions

@RonnieDroid great ! :) learning new stuff is always a good thing ! :)

What I want to do now is, keep the variable's string empty so when I run the app, it won't just run the already given number as age or something like that, I'd rather enter the number first. Then have the if, elif and else executed :-D
@cl-netbox thanks :-)
Do I make sense?

@terdon You're amazing! Thank you so much

@RonnieDroid I don't know much about python ... maybe @JacobVlijm or @SergiyKolodyazhnyy or @terdon can help you ? :)

3:50 PM
i saw the LC_ALL=C within the manual page but didn't understand how to use this

@cl-netbox oh, yeah they can if they want :-)

@Benny Sorting is actually ridiculously complex.
Here, @Benny, read this:
196
A: What does "LC_ALL=C" do?

Stéphane ChazelasLC_ALL is the environment variable that overrides all the other localisation settings (except $LANGUAGE under some circumstances). thanks

@RonnieDroid Not really, I'm afraid. Maybe you could give an example?
Are you looking for this?
var = None

I don't know what that is, but what I'm trying to do is, for example
Age = 21
If age < 21:
Print ("no bear for you")

3:57 PM
Woah.

Elif age <= 21

Just write all of the code (use Shift+Enter to change lines or write it in an external editor) and then post the whole thing.
It will be impossible to understand otherwise.

I'm using my phone, sorry

Ah
So why are you setting age to 21 before the while loop? Just set it to None.
None is a special python thing that basically means "undefined". \

Age = (will input the age here)

if age < 21:
print ("no bear for you")
elif age <= 21:
print ("bairly made it")
else:
print ("you can have your bear sir")

4:01 PM
@RonnieDroid This sort of thing is usually done in a function.

@terdon aha, I see, if I sit it to none, then when I run the .py file, it'll ask me to input an Age then execute the code?

@RonnieDroid Not quite. It won't ask automatically, you should tell it to ask. Even better, read the age as a commandline option

Sorry I know this is elementary school for you, but I really want to learn :-P

It is very annoying when you have to type data into programs.
@RonnieDroid That's fine, I only learned python last summer myself. I usually code in Perl/shell/awk or whatever.

@terdon okay, how to do so? :-D
I'll be back ;-)

4:08 PM
@RonnieDroid how can it work when you write "bear" instead of "beer" ... don't forget : python is stupid ! :D :D :D

@cl-netbox lol, I guess no one, no matter the age, would want a bear, unless it's a panda or Kuala haha

@RonnieDroid then ask @ParanoidPanda ... he's an expert when it comes to panda topics ! :D :D :D

@cl-netbox :-D

@RonnieDroid Here's one way. Slightly more complicated than absolutely necessary:
#!/usr/bin/env python3
import sys

def checkAge(age):
    if age < 21:
        print("no beer for you")
    elif age == 21:
        print("barely made it")
    else:
        print("you can have your beer sir")

if len(sys.argv) != 2:
    print("This script requires a single input argument, the age.")
    sys.exit(1)
myAge = sys.argv[1]
if not myAge.isdigit():
    print("The age given must be a number.")
    sys.exit(1)
else:
    myAge = int(myAge)

checkAge(myAge)
Then run it:
$ foo.py 12
no beer for you
$ foo.py 21
barely made it
$ foo.py 22
you can have your beer sir

@terdon do you see it @RonnieDroid ? terdon wrote it correctly without typos ... so I guess that will work ! :D :D :D

4:13 PM
@terdon waaa Buddy, that's a bit complicated for me, thank you so much anyway, I'll try to go through it and understand what each line does :-)
@cl-netbox @terdon is an expert :-D

@RonnieDroid Not at all! Not even close. I know very little python.

@RonnieDroid you forgot the most important word : terdon is an AWESOME expert ! :)

@terdon aha, you are still an expert compared to me :-P
@cl-netbox haha
Okay guys, thank you, gotta go now, see you later :-)

@RonnieDroid see you later terminator ( chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/38378443#38378443 ) ! :D

@RonnieDroid Here's a simpler version:
#!/usr/bin/env python3

def checkAge(age):
    if age < 21:
        print("no beer for you")
    elif age == 21:
        print("barely made it")
    else:
        print("you can have your beer sir")

myAge = int(input("Please enter something: "))
checkAge(myAge)
Or, even worse simpler:
#!/usr/bin/env python3
age = int(input("Please enter something: "))
if age < 21:
    print("no beer for you")
elif age == 21:
    print("barely made it")
else:
    print("you can have your beer sir")

4:18 PM
@terdon oh cool, this is much simpler, thank you, are are amazing :-)

user136984
@Fabby Yes, though I've just finished all my exams for the summer! :)

user136984

@RonnieDroid Note that it will break if you give it something that isn't a number.
But you're welcome.

@terdon that's just what I need for now ;-)

@ParanoidPanda hey buddy, you'll love my first project, it is about bears, you can have a free one too :-P

@ParanoidPanda I am fine thank you ! :) What about you ?

user136984
@cl-netbox: Good! I am fine! :)

@ParanoidPanda Great ! :) I found a nice tool -> github.com/ryran/xsos completely portable ... nothing to install : simply download, extract and execute it in a terminal ! :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: Sounds interesting! :)

@ParanoidPanda check it out ... you'll get comprehensive system information ... I guess you'll like it ! :)

4:31 PM
@terdon sudo apt install fakeid

user136984
@cl-netbox: I will! Thanks! :)

@cl-netbox If I want to use a device tree blob for an operating system that currently uses ATAGS, do I have to create my own bootloader?

@KazWolfe snort

It's also provided by systemd now

@PriyaBansal I don't know ... but if you have an efi based machine, every system has it's own boot loader located in /boot/efi/EFI on a separate EFI partition. :)

4:35 PM
Is a raspberry pi efi based?
I'm not entirely sure what efi-based means
I'm actually not sure if the Raspberry Pi even has a hard drive...

@PriyaBansal oh, I didn't know that you are talking about a Raspberry Pi - unfortunately I have no experience with it - I thought you were talking about a PC. :)

RPis use an ARM-style bootloader
So sort of an EFI/BIOS hybrid.
It'll read things from the boot partition of the SD card and then execute those instructions.

user136984

@RonnieDroid @terdon I always like something like:

print(["no beer for you", "barely made it", "you can have your beer sir"][[age < 21, age ==21, age > 21].index(True)])

@JacobVlijm Yeah, and you people think python is "readable and easy to understand". Sheesh!
@NathanOsman We had 36 C° yesterday (in the shade) and I spent the day racing a sailboat. In the sun, not the shade.

@terdon We hit 33 outside.
So that's close but not quite as bad.
At least outside, you sometimes get a breeze.

user136984
@NathanOsman: Here it was 35 inside so you can imagine what it was like outside! :D

5:33 PM
@NathanOsman Yeah, well, try spending 6 hours in the blazing sun, reflected on all sides by the sea while hauling ropes. . . :P
Was great fun though.

@NathanOsman you should drink a warm beverage. Even the temps out between you and the outside.

@terdon I'm a high risk for skin cancer so no thanks :P

@NathanOsman the heat trapped indoors can cause more damage the the sun, please be careful and always have good ventilation

@terdon that was perfectly readable to me :P

I'm taking a small tabletop fan to university too, it's unbearably hot there otherwise as well

Here now it is 23, it was freaking 41 at 12pm
