oh right
no systemd no discord...
#worth...?
@j0h Aren't there any Google forums on the internet?
@Avery Why on earth does Discord need systemd?
aweomeness attracts awesomeness
@NathanOsman proprietary software loves terrible software.
(that's mostly me memeing, but it's not running anyways)
That's lame.
j0h
j0h
google forums for command line linux? IDK maybe
you know, i have a pretty big project now that would be 100% impossible without systemd.
(or extremely hard)
fortunately, systemd's awesome dependency management is awesome and makes my life infinitely easier.
@KazWolfe I love the way unit files work. Don't get me wrong.
That's the best thing going for systemd.
And I would even like it if that was the only thing it did.
But that isn't even close to true.
that's pretty much all systemd does...
ha. ha. ha. ha.
ha. ha. ha.
02:12
Oh, what else does systemd do?
clarification: what else does systemd do that isn't just named systemd-* and can easily be replaced by pretty much any other program?
consoled, journald, networkd, udevd, timedated, logind etc.
pretty much none of that should exist.
I might install systemd on freebsd
so I can run systemd-analyze and brag about my boot time
ಠ_ಠ
You can use whatever timedate provider you don't want. I'm pretty sure systemd-timedated isn't that heavily tied into the platform.
In other news YAY for compiling atom on a 1 core 2gb ram virtual machine
02:18
also, NetworkManager can still pretty much replace networkd.
NetworkManager > rest
you can even probably get rid of logind
i'm pretty sure the only thing on that list that is actually something tied into systemd and not just a program under the systemd "brand" is journald
Yay, binary logs!
Woo! \o/
</sarcasm>
@KazWolfe dood I'm running a whole OS without systemd right now
ZERO systemd
like free, absolutely free of that redhat botnet
Remember when systemd accidentally wiped directories on your PC?
02:21
So it's definitely possible
i do agree, binary logs are annoying for diagnostics at times, but better field logging is definitely good
and ties in much better to things like logstash
*cough* JSON *cough*
and allows indexing without a lot of the standard text overhead.
> Error: Atom does not build properly on node v7+. node v7.8.0 is installed.
I WANT TO SLEEP DAMMIT
while json is nice, it's problematic because we're storing self-describing data, which can be annoying and a waste at times.
02:23
@KazWolfe As opposed to a binary format that nobody can read without decoding?
it's really trading off human readability for different structures and a more database-like format.
If space is a problem, just gzip old files. JSON compresses very well.
oh god no
I need to compile node js too
exactly.
why compress things when you can just store them in an already efficient format?
@NathanOsman My apologies, that took much longer than expected.
02:24
@Avery FreeBSD doesn't give you binary packages of Node?
@AndroidDev No worries.
So, where were we?
It does, but it's on node 7
I need 6
@Avery Oh-oh.
@AndroidDev So much happened I forgot :P
power died for ~30 seconds
@TheWanderer said something about a leak?
@Seth You should see what the sky looks like up here.
Storm warnings and everything.
It's only 7:30 and the sky is a scary dark grey.
best part? I'll probably nuke the install in a couple days
Pew pew...
@NathanOsman I'm north of the storm warnings here, but we got lightning bolts. They all left as soon as I got the camera out though :/
@Seth You lost power or Nathan lost power?
02:26
I haven't lost power.
I did. Briefly.
But Nathan and I live close enough that we share the same weather systems most of the time :P
p.ave.zone/udinuholec.sql (dammit hastebin stop giving random extensions)
I have a laptop and 3G connection I can use in case of failure.
But I really hope it doesn't come to that.
02:27
Which is ironic because it's a minimum of 200 miles
in fact, it's probably even easier to parse journald logs because of indexing and the like. JSON you have to iterate through to parse.
I have a render taking place on my Mini I don't want interrupted.
@NathanOsman probably not the best time for that lol
Ok, scrolling back you were wondering what was causing the mem leak @NathanOsman?
@Seth I started it four days ago.
How was I supposed to know we'd get this today.
@AndroidDev Yes.
02:30
@NathanOsman --^
@NathanOsman this was in the weather predictions longer than 4 days ago :P
but yeah, I forgot renders can take that long. Especially on a mini potato.
:P
Especially when it's a 240-frame animation being rendered in 16-bit color at DCI 4K.
@NathanOsman O_O Maybe you should take a look at us.rebusfarm.net/en
@AndroidDev oh, that's in your code.
@AndroidDev Interesting...
@AndroidDev Or maybe not. According to their calculator, it would cost me $60.72 USD to render my scene.
As opposed to doing it for free on my hardware over six days.
@NathanOsman How long does each frame take on your Mac Mini?
02:36
45 minutes.
What CPU do you have?
AMD A8-5600K on my desktop. The Mini has an i5.
It's a late 2014 Mini IIRC.
@NathanOsman Okay so anyways, did you and @TheWanderer come up with a work around for the hacky way I was resawning the activity?
Interestingly, it takes about 10 minutes on my desktop with GPU rendering.
But. Only on Windows - can't use my GPU for rendering on Linux.
02:40
@AndroidDev I'm not sure if we figured anything out.
Get another GPU and do passthough?
I might have to just try some things and see what happens.
Well you shouldn't have to spend time fixing my code...
@AndroidDev I could do that but I don't know if I can physically fit another one in the case.
I have an AMD APU, so there is actually an integrated chip.
But my PC resets after a few seconds if they are both enabled.
Time for BIOS hacking :D
Just kidding :)
02:43
Yeah, no - that's beyond my abilities.
...and patience.
oh right
The only I'd try a custom BIOS was if I had a gigabyte board with the two different NAND chips so you really can't brick it
Anyone else read libreboot's apology?
I think I did.
^--- preview of the render so far.
(Obviously not at full resolution or speed.)
There's a full-resolution image of one of the frames.
...or not.
Looks like imgur resized it.
>.<
imgur does that
02:56
It's annoying.
indeed.
flickr ftw
They say "must be under 2MB" so I make sure it is.
pity flickr is a yahoo! product.
And then they resize it anyway :|
@Seth Yeah.
I am on Flickr though.
@NathanOsman I follow you :P
Instagram is ok too, but that's a FB product. bleh.
02:58
Exactly.
Flickr's uploader is a bit wonky sometimes.
@NathanOsman - So want me to just make it show a toast saying that the change will take effect after returning to the main screen of the application?
That should be fine for now.
@NathanOsman Hmm, actually, it's letting me do this:
getActivity().recreate();
I'm sure I tried that before!
But wouldn't that have the same memory leak problem @NathanOsman?
@AndroidDev I'm not sure.
@NathanOsman Well you know what, you're doing the same call only a few lines earlier, so I'll just with it it.
03:19
Q: How do you tell if someone uses FreeBSD?
A: They will tell you.
@NathanOsman Okay, well here's the source code updated with the dark theme and pre-MM permissions patch :)
03:37
@Avery Someone already did that joke with arch.

Q: How do you tell if someone uses Arch?
A: They will tell you.
@AndroidDev Thanks!
@NathanOsman Any other UI features I could work on for you? I don't really know anything about your actual file transfer API, so I don't know that I'd be of much help there.
@AndroidDev I can't think of anything else at the moment.
@NathanOsman Okay. BTW, looks like someone wrote an article about Nitroshare :) tecmint.com/nitroshare-share-files-between-linux-ubuntu-windows
@NathanOsman programming horror story: devrant.io/rants/570241/…
I don't know how else to describe that.
That is terrifying.
So much "You're Doing It Wrong" I don't even know where to start.
If I was an investor and saw that, I'd be dropping my stock faster than a hot potato.
It game my stomach quite a turn.
04:58
@Seth To say nothing of the assault to my eyes.
@NathanOsman echo 'yes';

@NathanOsman yes, that's what I referenced to

Had a weird encounter yesterday when I installed Ubuntu on a super-fast PCIe SSD. Installer completed in less than 5 minutes.
impressive
I should get one of those.
08:21
yeah - great fun.
Sadly it is not for me but for my sister's new PC.
oh M.2?
those things are crazy

They're too small to believe their powers they have.

Q: PostgreSQL Ubuntu 16.04

Larissa JunekI installed PostgreSQL under Ubuntu 16.04 and want to work with a database postgis_in_action. I logged into the database and created a schema and two tables. I'd like to work with pgadminIII and so tried to connect to my database. The error is the following: <12:09:24: Fehler: Error connecting ...

10:50
@NathanOsman oh man. We have a bridge here that is higher going in and lower going out the other end. That's had some fun moments too in the past. Truckers all confident going in only to wreck it all in the middle of the pass :D

Q: How to run a script in Sudo and automatically fill in my password

Levi HenI have Bash for windows (linux subsystem) and I'm in the process of creating some powershell scripts (just for fun) for apps I run on Linux so I can just launch them from my desktop. It is all virtualized and offline so I'm really not looking for a lecture in security as I already know the ins a...

@cl-netbox ah, good morning
@Rinzwind morning ! I'm about to steal your bounty on that TTY question
@JourneymanGeek yeah, that never works well for me, I stay on my computer until the "Oh, sh!t" o'clock
lol
I do do that
brb, need to reboot. I bricked something

Q: super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

PramodBeing a newbie, I have very basic question: I have created an Android Application Project in Eclipse, in MainActivity.java > onCreate() it is calling super.onCreate(savedInstanceState). Can anyone explain what is the purpose of above line?

very helpful Q&A
16:52
^ this is relevant.
17:07
Because lasors
excuse my frustration , but . ..
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa
I am so STOOOOOOOOOOOPED
I've spent hours trying to figure out why does my code not transition to 3rd state . . .well guess what ? It was, but because I declared my state as 1-bit value, the binary 011 value was being truncated down to just 1
installing packet tracer on linux is just pure pain
@KazWolfe Which one ?
cisco's ccna training tool
why not just use wireshark ?
packet tracer simulates networks
i can't do that without equipment
17:19
Ah, ok
also . . . god i feel stupid right now
i literally headdesked
my code was working all along, but i didn't declare proper array like a noob
seriously... the installer provides no desktop file, no icon support, nothing.
meaning you need to hack all of that together.
@KazWolfe so basicaly building everything from a makefile ?
they give you the binary blob
but that's it
17:39
Well, my sequence detector module works. Hooray for that. Now I need to get to working on the elevator part
17:52
you may think this is not relevant to ubuntu
but my windows install is screwed
the mft died
when gparted shrank a part
and now 1: i have no windows and 2: i have no ubuntu
i boot to nothing at all
just a blinking cursor
are you running on UEFI or legacy
legacy
ubuntu part is okay
as for windows, chkdsk from recovery drive there. Linux's ntfs tools are pretty disappointing.
the mft for the windows part is the one thats ded
@craftxbox Try to avoid vulgarity here, please.
still, grub reinstall, fsck on linux just for safety. not sure if mft recovery is even possible, let me double check
@craftxbox please don't state the obvious >:-D
chkdsk doesnt seem to want to recover mft
recovery windows + chkdsk a few times would be your best (actually, only) bet.
the mft should have a mirror -- if both of those are broken, something is very very wrong
There should be an MFT mirror file on NTFS...
yeah, what he said.
blame slow wifi
17:59
chkdsk cant "recover the mft" apparently
is there any way to rebuild it?
not really
The MFT is the Master File Table.
It's a list of all files you have and stores where they are located.
