Q: How to reinstall xserver?

garbagecollectorI have recently killed xserver on my machine after a regular update. I have uninstalled and reinstalled nvidia-current with no success. Looks I have reinstall xserver. How do i achieve this? Please and thank you.

i would appreciate any help you guys may be able to shed on this question :)
Why did you accept it? :P

Q: Equivalent to Freedom and/or Anti-Social?

mummeyFreedom: http://macfreedom.com/ Anti-Social: http://anti-social.cc/ Simply put: Where can I find a equivalent to either-or/both these apps? Note: Part of the appeal of these apps is allowing the user to explicitly make it extra difficult to re-enable these services. Unplugging the network cabl...

20 dollars for an app that disables networking. I'm losing faith in humanity srsly
@StefanoPalazzo sudo rm /dev/eth0
I'll accept VISA
(I don't think that one does anything at all -- don't do it still)
Is there anyway to make keyring stop asking for my password 3 times on login
01:41
@StefanoPalazzo This is going to be the best script ever.
@VitalyBabiy You can update and change the password on the keyring in System -> Preferences -> Passwords and Encryption Keys
02:22
hello!

2 hours later…
04:18
thought it would for would have worked he gave me three options
turns out it didn't help
say wha?
hi @ajmitch

2 hours later…
06:06
@Chipaca @MarcoCeppi hi guys :)
06:23
Nothing like a night of shooting pool and drinking on a Thursday
TGI Thursday O_o ?
I guess so. it's 1:30a now so I need to find my bed in order to make it on time to work!

2 hours later…
08:16
Hello @StefanoPalazzo What's up?
morning @karthick87 :) I just got up
It's noon here :D
"Mark Shuttleworth
commented on Recommended installation for Asus EEE 1015PEM Netbook
If you have any problems with the 3D requirements in Unity, try the 2D version which is in a PPA for 10.10 and will be available in 11.04."
d'you know what he's talking about?

2 hours later…
10:11
Anyone has used rhythmbox-client before?
@KaustubhP what to you want to know about it?
@StefanoPalazzo hey :) I have a rhythmbox instance on 192.168.1.4, and I am trying to accesss it from my PC by executing the command rhythmbox-client 192.168.1.4
I get a (rhythmbox-client:8380): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. message
both machines have ssh-servers installed, an I also started te iBus, assuming that thats the bus the message talks about
Also tried running a rhythmbox-client on 192.168.1.4 (jukebox), but i guess that wotn work, cuz one of them has to be a master :?
phew sorry, I've never used it over a network
how was your setup?
Ibus is an input method program, that's got nothing to do with it. The message bus it talks about is presumably dbus
@KaustubhP you are not "root" when you enter this command, right?
10:21
nope
should I be?
no
I've read someone had the same problem, caused by him being root
Sorry, I can't help you. You should Ask a question (I'm sure it's useful for many others)
@StefanoPalazzo ohk, that helped too :)
@StefanoPalazzo about mark's comment: i believe there were plans to make a 2d version of unity.
or better: if mark says it's coming, then there are plans to make a 2d version of unity. :D
sounds like it, doesn't it
how cool would that be :)
and it was announced as a comment on one of my answers lol :P
do you know where that PPA is?
no idea sorry
also, see here:

A: Does Natty's Unity require proprietary graphics card drivers?

txwikingerI believe Unity requires 3D graphics. So if there is an open driver that can do that, you don't require proprietary drivers. Looking a the status of the FLOSS nouveau drivers, currently you probably would need the proprietary drivers for NVIDIA, however, they are working on the necessary featur...

"In addition, there will be a 2D implementation of Unity, available in 11.04 as an option." - i guess that's clear enough :P
10:31
Mh.. the link is dead
Great news anyway :-)
i guess it's all super-secret :P
I can tell (:
my system is really broken. uninstalling language-selector removes ubuntu-desktop on a "healthy" system but doesn't on this one (with ubuntu-desktop installed)... so i ordered a SSD, cause if i'm going to do a reinstall, it better be worth it :D
i'm also thinking of switchting to x64, but i'm not yet sure
good for you, I did that last month and It's fantastic
(the ssd, not 64 bit)
i already used a ssd-based system and it's just awesome. :-)
apart from the speedup i'll also appreciate the silence... yesterday i was wondering why my notebook's fan is always running. turns out the fan was off and it was the 7200rpm hdd that made all the noise :D
10:39
Indeed, it's also much cooler at the surface
I wonder who ever thought it was a good idea to have a piece of metal spinning seven thousand times a minute in a laptop
or having such fragile moving parts in a mobile computer ;-)
that last thing that needs to go is the fan
My last two laptops had to be replaced because of it.
:-(
mine didn't fail but became a lot louder
It's a bleeding piece of plastic, costs maybe 50 cents to make
@htorque that's how it starts, it'll get louder and louder, and eventually it will turn over a bit slower, until it stops spinning altogether.
It's really a fancy wheel of fortune.
10:45
I clean mine with a brush now, about once a month
If it ends in cylinder 1337 you win!
lol. i would even pay extra 10€ to get a high-quality, all-silent fan! but what matters to manufacturers is cutting costs... lead-free soldering is another big fail (for customers).
@badp you're big at gaming.se aren't you?
@StefanoPalazzo It's been my main Area51 commitment :)
10:47
I sent a friend off to look at the VVVVV demo
Beautiful game. At least, the demo is.
and it didn't work for him (flash works fine, but it was just a black screen)
that was on windows 7 with opera, any idea what that could've been?
opera :D
Love the music in that game (:
@badp hehe
10:48
just kidding, Opera is fine; it's probably the site that messed up somewhere
i love opera, but it certainly has issues with such content
eh, at least on Linux z-order with everything flash is messed up
also, a lot of web developers only know windows, ie, and ff.
makes sense
i've seen js like 'if (useragent doesn't contain windows) abort;'
10:51
As the MSO meme goes:
Ubuntu: Unsupported.
yay for X running at 70% CPU
any ideas how to compactly represent a 81-bit array? right now i pad it with zeros to 85 bits, then convert every 5 bits to a base-32 character, resulting in 17 characters.
Do you want to store it in ram?
on-disk
maybe i just should do bzip2...
phew
bzip2 won't be efficient for 81 bits
11:07
hm, especially run-length encoding is a waste... about 1/3 of the bits are set, maybe i can find something for sparse matrices.
You could do some run-length encoding
yeah, not a lot of runs unfortunately
what does the array look like if you convert it to only "A-z"?
11:08
@htorque sorry to interrupt, but is the array some progression?
@StefanoPalazzo it's only 0-9a-v... of course i could raise the base a bit, just was wondering if there are better approaches
@KaustubhP nope
You can convert it to anything you like, say anything that fits into one byte, but leaving a few bytes for your run-length indicators, if your runs are on average ≩ 2.0, you'll save space. Say your runs are on average 3.0, then you'll save |S| / 3 / 3, so nine bits - or something like that
hm, yeah... i'd probably need to do some analysis on the input first. haven't given it a lot of thought yet. :)
you could make it a big integer and calculate the prime factors :-)
thats the king of time-memory trade-offs
11:17
interesting patent on the subject
hmmmm, let's say i want to save 100.000 of those 81-bit arrays, then i could sort them and only represent the differences... like what @KaustubhP was suggesting.
yeah, but calculating the differences is very hard indeed
iirc, you'd have to do a largest common substring on every one of them
wasn't that stuff related to suffix arrays/suffix trees?
looooong time ago i read about it :D
I'm not sure if the editing distance won't be on the same order as the length of the array itself, so you would've gained nothing by doing a diff
By the way, the complexity in the image above is, in practice, wrong. I've implemented "diff" and it was too slow to be useful, but as soon as I cached the results of the LCS function, it was really fast.
another question for the python pros: aren't there data structures to represent bijections? using two dicts seems so wrong...
11:33
two?
you're right, there isn't a data type in python that does them
well, one for the mapping A->B and one for the other way round. i could add a : b and b : a, but that would screw with getkeys or whatever it is called.
I'm just trying to implement one
ok, thanks, that was what i wanted to know :)
pretty interesting problem
whew, another 300 dead birds have fallen from the sky in the usa (alabama).
the end is near!
11:43
@htorque seriously?
@htorque pypi.python.org/pypi/blist this has a sortedset type
well, no... i'm not sure if the end is near :D
no, i meant, the brids falling from the sky :(
@StefanoPalazzo cool, thanks :-)
so you could define f(x) = S2[x] where S1[x] = x
thats worrying :/
"""According to scientists, massive die offs of animals are not unusual in nature and happen for a variety of reasons including bad weather, disease outbreaks and poisonings,[19] with pollution and climate change adding to the stresses on wildlife.[20] The U.S. Geological Service's website listed about 90 mass deaths of birds and other wildlife from June through December 12.[21]"""
the media doesn't believe in science!
19^ "Birds Falling From the Sky Not Unusual". 6 January 2011.
20^ "SCIENCE NEWS Mass bird deaths rare, not apocalyptic: experts". January 6, 2011.
21^ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20110104/us-odd-dead-birds/
:P
lol, dont trust the media to believe in anything
they only believe in TRPs
well, there are going to be a few thousand injured in india, its kite-flying season
11:50
media proves science wrong by printing it bold
2
:D
Imagine, if the US geological services listed 90 mass animal deaths, how many more must there be around the planet
And even so, this: "On December 30th, three young whooping cranes were found dead in Kentucky, USA" is news, apparently...
breaking news!
those ducks are so weak, they can't even withstand a little wind
as i said, the end is near! :>
yeah, its 2012 in like 11 months.

2 hours later…
awesome :)
@StefanoPalazzo whats 2d and 3d mean? I am thinking something invloving goggles :S
that's certainly not unity 2d oO
as the comments suggest, it looks exactly like 10.10's unity
the 3d version of unity uses the graphics cards 3d rendering to paint the screen, this way you can do nice visual effects; blur, transparency, fading windows and so on. the 2d version merely paints pixels on a flat plane
so they're not talking about three dimensional space, but about the graphics card's "3d acceleration"
no link to askubuntu on that one
hmm. sometimes i wish i had taken an interest earlier ;/
omg is as good as askubuntu in matters of eye-candy
Even I was answered by Mark Shuttleworth, not once, but twice xD
best day of my life!
13:58
he's only human ;-)
yeah, but OMG Mark freaking Shuttleworth! Its like getting brushed by a famous actor, only in the virtual world!
14:25
oh damn, i give up :D
@htorque what were u attempting :P
hey, whats wrong with this command: mkdir foo_`date `
@htorque You can't have formatting or things surrounding your messages
@KaustubhP Everything :P
mkdir foo_$(date) IIRC
it creates a directory for each part of the day
Well, it should be mkdir "foo_$(date)" but yeah, use the $()` wrapper to execute things in an embedded fashion in bash
yeah, works :P
14:38
But you should probably use a different format since Fri Jan 14 09:37:18 ESTY 2011 isn't the best for a file name
yeah, i was gonna say that
mkdir "foo_$(date +%Y-%b-%d)"
I usually use date +%Y%m%d so something like $(date +%Y%m%d)_filenmame
but only because I like YYYYMMDD as my formats :)
date -Ru :-)
date: illegal option -- R
huh
      -R, --rfc-2822 output date and time in RFC 2822 format.
14:43
Macfail

your computer is from the 1990s man :)
It's sad because I'm like running the equivalent of 9.10 Ubuntu here
@MarcoCeppi date -Ru worked on my PC
Well, actually - in release cycles this would be the equivalent of 10.04
@KaustubhP I'm sure it did. I'm on a mac at work unfortunately.
14:48
In release cycles, I'm running the equivalent of "Yellow Submarine" :P
14:59
hi

Q: Windows not closing

bhanuAfter login, a number of windows such as Desktop, Downloads, and Pictures opens automatically. When I try to close them one by one closes itself but last one opens all indicating starting file manager in lower panel/status bar

does anybody know what the second sentence means?
No idea.
might be a duplicate of this one

Q: How to close multiple nautilus folders that are opening automatically after login?

DenjaHi community, Every time after I login into Ubuntu 5 folders from the same path (/usr/share/applications) are opening automatically I searched in Nautilus Help and I couldn’t find anything related to my issue. How to close multiple nautilus folders that are opening automatically after login?

Looks like it actually
I would comment and put the vote on it
"When I try to close them one by one closes itself but last one opens all "
that might mean "when I try to close them one by one, they open again as soon as I close the last one"
15:10
True
\o/ finally we got a grip for easier window resizing:
hehe, it's also on both panels in the gnome-session :D
the end of gnome 2.x is a signal for a new desktop environment for DESKTOPS and LAPTOPS -_-
unity and shell are for netbooks and tablets, not desktops and laptops
@RolandTaylor Do you really think that desktops and laptops are going to be around 5-8 years from now?
in a different form factor, but yes
Most of my laptops are now stacked and clustered into mini servers
15:14
do we have flying cars?
@RolandTaylor yeah, that form factor is tablets and netbooks
I bet laptops will be around for 15 years at least
I mean - everyday, practical, commonly used, widely available flying cars?
non-touch ones
why do you think that? i've been using unity for over half a year only on desktops and notebooks w/o a problem
15:15
No, but we do have Tablets and Netbooks
@StefanoPalazzo +1
netbooks are not good for people like me in the real world
I'm over 6ft and my hands aren't that tiny
and tablets are not good for sitting and writing a novel
13" convertible is great
desktops are still going to be around for a while too - becoming home servers of a kind
My hands are short, stubby, and fat netbooks are cumbersome but work
@htorque not for me
@MarcoCeppi not for me
my laptop is 17inches and I feel like complaining sometimes :P
15:17
We're still using a lot of technology that is completely outdated and ridiculous. Like keyboards, calculators, watches, CDs, wired telephones, ...
ofc the screen is broken - but when I replace it I'm getting something of a similar size
@StefanoPalazzo +1
there's not much difference between 14-17" notebook keyboards (size-per-key-wise)
actually that's not the only reason I like 17" laptops
I get an integrated number pad, and a comfortable layout otherwise
To each there own.
and imagine - 2 hard drive slots :D, a tv tuner, powerful graphics - etc...
15:19
Gnome Shell and Unity aren't going to wipe out the desktop interface as we know it
and let's not forget - when the females see it they go "shiny................."
@MarcoCeppi maybe not unity, but shell sucks
I want a 13.3" laptop with 3840x2400 pixels of display resolution (surely that's possible)
@MarcoCeppi oh no, that phrase was used by the nazis! consider yourself lucky not having said it in the german public. :D
This conversation has devolved to Nazi's so quickly?
15:20
took a while, honestly
it's a law :D
godwin's law
You have two germans in ze room, those have to be factored in :)
“As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.”
it's |G| × length of the conversation where G is the set of germans :P
15:22
O.o
maths....
hides
well, i'm not sure which one to favor: talking about nazis or subjective argumentation about the quality of unity :D
unity!
or gnome-shlop
:D
will fedora ship with the gnome shell?
how about debian?
fedora ships anything the arrogant army decrees
fedora will ship gnome-shell, by default
15:25
Debian might have Unity shipping next release
debian... who knows
@StefanoPalazzo better
there was a big argument in the fedora community about the wallpaper
they wanted to ship the gnome-shell default wallpaper for branding reasons, and the art team was left with nothing to do, they were a bit mad about it
Someone's filed an ITP for Unity on Debian. Let's light this candle. :)
woohoo
@StefanoPalazzo a bit? do they have no courage?
fedora has had some of the best art ever!
I'd use it if they stopped marching to the arrogant army's drum
15:28
they did have some great wallpapers
i like it that they enable nouveau's expiremental 3d support by default (even if this can backfire terribly)
I like that too ^^
sigh... if only canonical and gnome would drop the arrogance hat
:(
wishful thinking gets me no where :(
@RolandTaylor wishful thinking gets you dead...
@TheX :D!
Just like I wish my ipads where not stolen, and some dude in Canada wasn't using them...
15:33
O.o
why would you buy an ipad in the first place? :P
I didn't...
work did...

Q: Upgrading Ubuntu 7.10 Server (Gutsy)

PhilipHi, I have an Ubuntu 7.10 Server running and finally there is time to upgrade it... ;-) The updating mechanism does not work anymore. Is it actually possible to upgrade, or should I rather install a fresh Ubuntu Server 10.04? If an upgrade is possible, do you have any recommendations? Thanks, ...

do you think that's a good answer?
or rather, did I make a mistake, is it correct?
Wie gehts, deutsch leute im raum?
where is the notifications addon? I lost it D:
15:36
@KaustubhP :-)
@KaustubhP want some sauerkraut and bratwurst?
@htorque Ja, nehme ich :D
-मी ठीक आहे, -आपण कसे आहात? :-)
15:39
@StefanoPalazzo awesome :)
@MarcoCeppi is the notify-OSD extension available in the store yet? chromium rudely deleted mine :/
Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet, treu ihr sein für alle Tage?
Still under review
@iamsid ich kann nur ein bischen sprechen :/
@MarcoCeppi :(
15:44
@KaustubhP सलाम नमस्ते |
:P
here's the most important german phrase, everbody needs to know:
Entschuldigen Sie, wie komme ich am schnellsten nach Frankreich?
:P
Nein! Entschuldigen Sie mich, wie ich nach Italien?
:P
@StefanoPalazzo bahaha
@iamsid did google start translating into devnagari?
@KaustubhP Yes! :)
wow, yes it deos. last time i checked it was under dev :_
:)
@StefanoPalazzo graci!
15:48
@KaustubhP All the best for the World Cup! :)
@iamsid yeah! IPL will be better!
@MarcoCeppi How does the "Views" thang work? Is n views from IP a = n views?
@iamsid I'm not sure how the views count works
Zu gross, zu klein
Er könnte etwas größer sein
Schnaps im Kopf, du holde Braut
Steck Bratwurst in dein Sauerkraut
bahahaha }:-)
Rammstein!
Dale Steyn!
German Stein = Dutch Steijn = Afrikaans Steyn

Hmm, no @GeorgeEdison ):

Q: Can you make askubuntu fit on netbook screens?

Ingo GerthBeing a netbook user (Eee PC) I am frequently annoyed by the fact that askubunt doesn't fit on my screen horizontally. Could this website's maintainer make the website resize correctly? As Ubuntu is heavily supporting netbooks with ther netbook edition this would be quite logical to me. See th...

@iamsid really?
I ain't got no problems on my Asus 1005PE
@KaustubhP Yes.
I mean Rammstein = !Dale Steyn. :P
ahah, it was fun learning deutsch. sadly, i am not continuing anymore :(
Why?

Q: Could we please be a bit nicer to the noobs?

Chris UpchurchI've been using Stack Overflow for most of the private beta. Since the site went to public beta on Monday, I have detected a distinct decline in the level of civility. Some of this is due to new users coming in and posting spam and other nonsense, but the offtopic and downvote buttons are doing...

I felt the same. Some sites are rude. Ask Ubuntu is fantastic.
I <3 Ask Ubuntu.
